SAT       85 this year, Mikis Theodorakis is best known for the
SAT       music to 1974 film Zorba the Greek, but as Miranda Hinkley
SAT       discovers, there's also a wealth of chamber, opera and
SAT       symphonic music. Part of the resistance during the Second
SAT       World War, imprisoned during the Greek Civil War, exiled
SAT       during the military dictatorship, his story mirrors that
SAT       of modern Greece. And he's been responsible for a musical
SAT       revolution, a uniquely Greek sound. Mikis Theodorakis is
SAT       joined by singers Maria Farantouri and Marios Frangoulis
SAT       and by violinist Georgos Demertzis, to look back on a
SAT       60-year career.

SAT       settings strange. Schumann said that he himself found the
SAT       texts strange at first, but as he began to understand the

SAT       Verdi's opera Stiffelio had a troubled history. The
SAT       predominantly Catholic Italy of the mid-19th century was
SAT       not ready for a story of adultery in the home of a
SAT       Protestant minister and the opera was severely censored at
SAT       the time of its première in 1850. Forced to extensively
SAT       revise his opera, Verdi then lost interest in it and did
SAT       his best to destroy all copies of the original manuscript.
SAT       It wasn't until 1960 that a complete score of Stiffelio
SAT       was discovered, and in 1993 it entered the repertory of
SAT       the Metropolitan Opera with tenor Plácido Domingo in the
SAT       title role. Domingo now takes up the conductor's baton
SAT       whilst Argentinian tenor José Cura sings the role of
SAT       Stiffelio, the troubled clergyman who struggles between
SAT       his ideals and the urge for revenge. American soprano
SAT       Sondra Radvanovsky performs the role of his wife, Lina.
SAT       From the opening scene, the young Verdi's originality is
SAT       apparent as he begins Stiffelio with a long, ambitious
SAT       septet and goes on from there with that mixture of
SAT       dramatic force and melodic richness that made him the most
SAT       successful composer of Italian opera in the second half of
SAT       the 19th century.

SAT       The string quartet is often said to be one of the most
SAT       challenging mediums to write for, and anyone attempting it
SAT       today is standing on the shoulders of giants, going back
SAT       to Beethoven, Mozart and Haydn.
SAT       But James Dillon and Jonathan Harvey can certainly claim
SAT       authority in this medium, each of them having written
SAT       several substantial string quartets, and their latest
SAT       quartets are featured in this programme, with Dillon's new
SAT       quartet recorded here in its very first performance, from
SAT       the 2009 Huddersfield Contemporary Music Festival.
SAT       Harvey's fourth quartet, recorded at the same event,
SAT       extends the medium with a virtuosic electronic part,
SAT       transforming the string sounds and projecting them to all
SAT       corners of the concert hall. As the composer describes it,
SAT       All sorts of psychic metamorphoses are undergone by the
SAT       string sound; it seems to enter into spaces like the
SAT       centre of the earth...

SUN       The Black Sea Region of Turkey was once the ancient
SUN       kingdom of The Pontus and its Christian orthodox
SUN       inhabitants subsequently thrived through the Byzantine and
SUN       Ottoman times. But for centuries this culture, centred on
SUN       the great trading port of Trebizond on the caravan route
SUN       to Persia, was living on borrowed time. The 1923 exchange
SUN       of populations between modern Greece and Turkey, resulting
SUN       from the Lausanne Treaty, was the end game that gave rise
SUN       to the Pontic nationality splitting into multiple
SUN       citizenships. The shepherds in the high mountains behind
SUN       the city of Trebizond, who for more than a thousand years
SUN       had driven their flocks up onto the high plateau in summer
SUN       and back to the narrow coastal plain in winter, sometimes
SUN       adopting a Christian persona, sometimes a Muslim one,
SUN       disappeared and the economy has never really recovered.
SUN       Worse than this for some, the architectural jewel that was
SUN       Trabzon (as it is now called) has become an almost
SUN       Soviet-like conglomeration of tower blocks. The final
SUN       insult came five years ago with the much opposed
SUN       construction of a coastal motorway, which has chopped this
SUN       once great maritime city off from the Black Sea. The
SUN       isolation that kept ancient cultures protected has finally
SUN       gone - along with the cultures. Tom de Waal traces some of
SUN       what has been lost to the Soumela Monastery where every
SUN       August 15th people of Pontic descent from across the globe
SUN       come to remember the feast of the Virgin. Here there is a
SUN       collision of Russian, Turkish and Greek interests, which
SUN       provides a lesson in modern regional politics. But
SUN       connecting all of these disparate people is music - the
SUN       Greek Lyre and the Turkish Kemence, a small violin played
SUN       like a 'cello. They play the same, they dance the same.
SUN       Culturally connected and politically divided this is a
SUN       story of people who are really cousins, or even brothers,
SUN       but cannot quite bring themselves to admit it.

SUN       makes the impression, or the combination of its individual
SUN       features?

SUN       We begin by searching amongst the faces in a crowd as they
SUN       walk past us – each unique – as observed by Walt Whitman.
SUN       The focus shifts onto the eyes, the windows of the soul.
SUN       From David Newton’s laid back arrangement of the jazz
SUN       classic Angel Eyes , through Poulenc’s surreal La Dame
SUN       Aveugle (the blind woman) to a knowing glance from the
SUN       winking, blinking maid, it’s all rather tiring so what
SUN       better way to sink into a slumber than with a children’s
SUN       poem Wynken, Blynken and Nod which I still read to my own
SUN       little ones at bedtime.

SUN       George Barlow’s ecstatic eulogy on the face of a loved one
SUN       is tinged with sadness, for there is a large age gap
SUN       between them. Not such a problem for young Narcissus, as
SUN       he unwisely falls for his own reflection, a story echoed
SUN       by the wicked queen in Little Snow White as she gazes into
SUN       her mirror. The music here is Tcherepnin’s Narcisse et
SUN       Echo, rarely heard and yet so effective.
SUN       
SUN       Age will always win in the end, of course, eating away at
SUN       youth’s bloom. Oscar Wilde’s Dorian Gray thinks he has the
SUN       answer – give away your soul and hide a portrait in the
SUN       attic. Simple! But we all know it won’t end there…
SUN       
SUN       What about those who are born without beauty? The facially
SUN       challenged hero is Edmond Rostand’s Cyrano, unforgettably
SUN       portrayed on screen by Depardieu in a film which used
SUN       Anthony Burgess’s virtuosic translation as subtitles, and
SUN       demands an equally virtuosic performance here by Michael
SUN       Maloney.
SUN       
SUN       The sad fact is that for those who are not blessed with
SUN       beauty or are cursed with some facial flaw, finding a
SUN       partner is very hard work. Eliza Cook’s Song of the ugly
SUN       maiden is one of the saddest poems I know, particularly
SUN       poignant when you remember that in the 19th century when
SUN       it was written, marrying was essential for any woman who
SUN       wanted any kind of independence or financial security.
SUN       
SUN       Like any fairy tale, we all need a happy ending, so as
SUN       little Gerda kisses away Kay’s tears in Hans Christian
SUN       Andersen’s The Snow Queen we can see clearly that love is
SUN       the ultimate salvation. A kiss from the lips communicates
SUN       so much, from that first sensation of electricity –
SUN       wonderfully described in Purcell’s erotic Sweeter than
SUN       roses, to tenderness from an old friend. Beauty is only
SUN       skin deep, and as Ella sings so seductively, when we
SUN       eventually find our soul mate, we come to love that face
SUN       which we see every morning over the breakfast table, no
SUN       matter what it looks like.

SUN       Colin Towns about his latest project, where he arranged
SUN       the music of Miles Davis, particularly during his Electric
SUN       period with the HR Big Band as well as his continuing work

SUN       Formed in 1990, the Colin Towns Mask Orchestra is a
SUN       rhythmically infectious 19-piece big band presenting some
SUN       of the greatest and most important new and established
SUN       players in jazz today. Band members over the years have

WED       on the scores of all their successors, and will most
WED       likely continue to do so for as long as music is being
WED       written.

WED       So says Daniel Barenboim about the two composers whose
WED       works he performs with the Berlin Staatskapelle in four
WED       concerts being broadcast in Performance on 3 between
WED       February the 3rd and 9th. Recorded at London's Royal
WED       Festival Hall the pianist, conductor and humanitarian
WED       plays all five of Beethoven's Piano Concertos and also
WED       conducts some of Schoenberg's seminal orchestral works.
WED       
WED       Both Beethoven and Schoenberg are composers who
WED       simultaneously summarised the musical traditions that went
WED       before them whilst pointing to radical new developments
WED       and Barenboim see parallels between them in forging new
WED       paths that were to have lasting, irrevocable consequences
WED       for the future of composition.
WED       
WED       In the first concert of the series, Barenboim pairs works
WED       written a century apart when both composers were in their
WED       mid 20s. Beethoven's vivacious C major Piano Concerto was
WED       one of the works which the young enfant terrible wowed the
WED       aristocracy of Vienna in the 1790s, while Schoenberg's
WED       audacious Pelleas and Melisande is a piece scored for
WED       massive orchestra which teeters on the edge of tonality.

WED       Tonight's concert is followed by a focus on Barenboim
WED       performing chamber music in recordings made especially for
WED       the BBC. Carrying on with the artistic parallels suggested
WED       in this evening's concert, we feature Daniel Barenboim

THU       In the galaxy of British literary fiction Martin Amis is
THU       still a name to conjure with. His era defining 80s novels
THU       as London Fields and Money front a collected works that
THU       includes 12 novels, 2 autobiographies, serious journalism,
THU       essays and two volumes of short stories on subjects
THU       ranging from video games to paedophilia. After 9/11 Amis
THU       became more famous for his pungent opinions on Islamism
THU       and the supposed backwardness of Arab societies than his
THU       novels earning the ire of Terry Eagleton and Yasmin
THU       Alibhai-Brown among others.

THU       He has returned to fiction with a new work, The Pregnant
THU       Widow. Set in a country house in Italy, the novel tackles
THU       the sexual fallout of the feminist revolution. A

THU       progress. No stranger to giving offence, Amis, by his own
THU       admission, has said it will get him in trouble with the
THU       feminists but others talk of a return to the comic form
THU       that made him famous.

THU       Considered to possess a very English sensibility, Amis has
THU       spent a lot of time elsewhere, particularly New York and
THU       he spent the last two years living in Uruguay with his
THU       wife but he also has a position as Professor of Creative
THU       Writing at the University of Manchester.
