Sir Peter Maxwell Davies at 75SAT
SAT
For this week’s Music Matters, Tom Service travels toSAT
Sanday, one of the northernmost Orkney Isles, to meet theSAT
Master of the Queen’s Music, Sir Peter Maxwell Davies.SAT
SAT
Maxwell Davies – or ‘Max’ – was born in Salford in 1934,SAT
and has been a figurehead of British classical music sinceSAT
the 1950s. After studying and working in the United StatesSAT
and Australia, he moved to Hoy, the most dramatic of theSAT
Orkney islands, in 1971. He moved to the flatter landscapeSAT
of Sanday a few years ago.SAT
SAT
At HomeSAT
SAT
Max shows Tom around his home on the west coast of Sanday,SAT
where he lives with his partner, Colin Parkinson, andSAT
their dog Judy. Starting in the study, Tom asks Max aboutSAT
the objects around the house which provide clues to hisSAT
music – from the fossils and religious icons near hisSAT
desk, to the 3D collages which he makes as part of theSAT
compositional process for new pieces.SAT
SAT
Max reflects on his childhood growing up during the SecondSAT
World War – on how the memories, and the sound of theSAT
foxtrot, have stayed with him. He plays Tom one of hisSAT
piano pieces written for his partner Colin, and ColinSAT
tells the story of how he and Max first met.SAT
SAT
On The BeachSAT
SAT
During a windy, and wet, walk on the coral white beach atSAT
Start Point on Sanday, Max explains to Tom some of theSAT
inspirations behind his music, how he maps out his musicSAT
in minute detail on the landscape and seascape – and onSAT
the movements of seals – whilst on his daily walks withSAT
Judy, and how he manipulates time to work on transitionsSAT
which end up as a few seconds in performance, but takeSAT
twenty minutes to stride out on the beach.SAT
SAT
MagicSAT
SAT
Back at home, Max and Tom talk about the role ofSAT
spirituality in his music, and about the ancient iconsSAT
above each door in his house, placed there to ward offSAT
evil spirits. And he tells Tom how his beliefs, his strongSAT
opinions on social and political issues – from the IraqSAT
war to climate change – and his relationships, areSAT
inseparable from the music he writes.SAT

Carl Heinrich GraunSAT
Catherine Bott delves into the life and the intriguingSAT
music of mid-18th century German composer Carl HeinrichSAT
Graun - not necessarily a famous name these days, but inSAT
his time, along with Hasse, considered to be the mostSAT
important German composer of Italian opera.SAT
SAT
As a young man, Graun had his fingers in many musicalSAT
pies, and by the time he reached his early 20s, was anSAT
accomplished singer, cellist, keyboard-player andSAT
composer. He spent nine happy years in the service of theSAT
Duke of Brunswick, where, in 1733, he came onto PrinceSAT
Frederick of Prussia's radar, and before long, Graun wasSAT
given a plum job at Frederick's court. Soon after that,SAT
the music-loving Prince Frederick acceded to the throne,SAT
and, as Frederick the Great, began to challenge the worldSAT
on all fronts. While the new emperor prepared his armiesSAT
to invade Silesia, his trusty Kapellmeister Graun set offSAT
to scout the opera houses of Italy and bring back the bestSAT
talent to Berlin.SAT
SAT
Frederick was an ardent opera enthusiast and wasSAT
determined to turn Berlin into an international operaticSAT
centre. To that end, he commissioned two new stages fromSAT
architect and painter George Wenzeslaus von Knobelsdorff,SAT
both inaugurated within 12 months of one another, with newSAT
productions of operas by Graun. The first was Graun'sSAT
setting of Rodelinda for the theatre at the royalSAT
residence in the Berliner Stadtschloss, and the second, inSAT
December 1742, was for the opera house in central Berlin,SAT
at Unter den Linden, which opened to huge critical praiseSAT
SAT
Graun's music expresses the moving, the tender and theSAT
imploring; his simplification of certain aspects of theSAT
operatic structure, like the arioso (a style of singingSAT
somewhere between aria and recitative) and even ballet,SAT
point to the next generation of composers, especially theSAT
most famous 18th-century musical reformer of all - Gluck.SAT

Paul McKennaSUN
Michael Berkeley talks to hypnotist and televisionSUN
personality Paul McKenna, who began his career as a radioSUN
DJ before becoming fascinated by hypnosis. Originally anSUN
entertainer, his activities now include self-improvementSUN
TV shows, seminars, producing books and other multi-mediaSUN
products, and helping people to change their habits andSUN
lifestyles through hypnosis, neuro-linguistic programmingSUN
and other personal development techniques.SUN
SUN
McKenna was introduced to classical music by his friendSUN
Kenny Everett, and his choices begin with the sparklingSUN
finale of Bizet's Symphony in C, and end with the finalSUN
part of Rossini's William Tell Overture, both of whichSUN
Paul McKenna loves for their upbeat quality. In between,SUN
there is Mozart's overture to The Marriage of Figaro. HeSUN
also talks about a controversial book which claims thatSUN
water crystals can be influenced by different types ofSUN
music into forming certain types of shapes and patterns.SUN
SUN
There is also the Prelude to Wagner's Die MeistersingerSUN
von Nurnberg, which he loves for its grandeur and power;SUN
Pat Metheny's To the End of the World, A Song for You sungSUN
by the late Donny Hathaway, a singer whom Paul McKennaSUN
considers very underrated; and a piece that reminds him ofSUN
his childhood, Max Steiner's Summer Place, which now oftenSUN
accompanies his barbecues at his Los Angeles home.SUN

Shostakovich Piano Trios, Op 8 and 67SUN
Stephen Johnson visits Wootton Upper School inSUN
Bedfordshire for an exploration of Shostakovich's two verySUN
different trios for piano and strings. The first wasSUN
written in 1923 when the 17-year-old composer was aSUN
student at the St Petersburg Conservatoire. At that time,SUN
Shostakovich often played music to accompany films at aSUN
local cinema, and his sister remembers Shostakovich beingSUN
booed and whistled by the paying audience when he and hisSUN
friends tried playing the trio along to the movies.SUN
SUN
A recording of the slow movement of Shostakovich's secondSUN
trio was played at the composer's memorial service inSUN
1975; it's a much more mature work, full of emotion, butSUN
also full of sardonic humour: grotesqueries which act asSUN
thinly-veiled stabs at the Soviet dictatorship of JozefSUN
Stalin. It also contains some fascinating Jewish music inSUN
the finale - something Shostakovich had been particularlySUN
intrigued by in his middle years.SUN
SUN
The programme ends with a complete performance by TheSUN
Kungsbacka Trio, of Shostakovich's Piano Trio No 2 in ESUN
minor, Op 67.SUN

It is an extraordinary account by an Ancient Greek of howSUN

Ideas - The British Version (Series 2), The Garden CitySUN
Historian Tristram Hunt follows the 'garden city' as heSUN
concludes a series about surprising journeys of ideas thatSUN
first developed in Britain and then spread around theSUN
world.SUN
SUN
The garden city was the utopian brain-child of a humbleSUN
British clerk, Ebenezer Howard, who imagined a new kind ofSUN
settlement that would fuse the best of town and country,SUN
creating not just decent living places for ordinarySUN
people, but a new social harmony. Unlike many utopianSUN
schemes, in 1903 Howard managed at least a partialSUN
realisation of his dream - at Letchworth, amid the fieldsSUN
of Hertfordshire. But as Tristram discovers, the ideaSUN
mutated, and rapidly migrated beyond our shores.SUN
SUN
He follows Howard's influence from Letchworth, to west andSUN
north London, to suburban Paris and on to New Jersey. AndSUN
he finds out how a twisted version of the Garden CitySUN
model may even have had an unwitting influence on NaziSUN
plans for occupied Poland.SUN
SUN
Finally, Tristram follows the trail back to Britain.SUN
Advocates of government-backed 'ecotowns' see them as aSUN
revival of Howard's Victorian dream of 'a peaceful path toSUN
real reform'. But can they really match Howard'sSUN
achievements?SUN

Illusions of PowerSUN
SUN
A sequence of poetry, prose and music on the theme ofSUN
power, with readings by Sheila Hancock and Tom Hollander.SUN
SUN
With poems from Percy Shelley, Ted Hughes, Rudyard KiplingSUN
and Margaret Atwood, as well as music by Prokofiev, LigetiSUN
and Handel.SUN
SUN
Please note this programme contains strong language.SUN
SUN
How real is power? When is it imagined and when is itSUN
true? Who or what has power over us, our actions, ourSUN
minds, bodies and spirit?SUN
SUN
From the might of Carl Orff’s Carmina Burana and speechesSUN
from at times once extraordinarily powerful PrimeSUN
Ministers, via the cataclysmic Jonchaies by Xenakis andSUN
Black Sabbath’s The Illusion of Power to Durufle’s settingSUN
of Gregorian Chant, Tantum Ergo, venerating the power ofSUN
the Blessed Sacrament, the first five minutes of thisSUN
sequence of Words and Music presents authority, control,SUN
influence and power in many of its forms.SUN
SUN
MacDougall’s Gathering is a piobaireachd arranged forSUN
viola and bronze age horns, and usually played on bagpipesSUN
to gather one of the oldest truly Celtic Clans. AnSUN
incredibly powerful summoning of clan members from acrossSUN
the highlands around Oban.SUN
SUN
The energy of Mosolov’s Iron Foundry is followed by KitSUN
Wright’s Ode to Didcot Power Station. Wright says that ifSUN
he was going to have an ode, “why not go the whole hog andSUN
pull out all the stops with ‘thee’s and ‘thou’s and fairlySUN
antiquated language.”SUN
SUN
Sibelius stood in his living room looking out over LakeSUN
Tuusula watching swans circle his house and which thenSUN
‘disappeared into the solar haze like a gleaming silverSUN
ribbon’. He transformed their flight and movement into theSUN
finale of his fifth symphony. The musicologist DonaldSUN
Francis Tovey compared the ‘swan theme’ to the Norse godSUN
Thor swinging his hammer.SUN
SUN
Jennifer Rush’s power ballad, The Power of Love wasSUN
originally on the playlist for this sequence, however, itSUN
just wouldn’t fit, so on the back of the celebration ofSUN
the power of love in Out of the Shadows we have PercySUN
Grainger’s The Power of Love. Not quite the same, but itSUN
certainly does the job.SUN
SUN
Moving slowly and brutally from love through the physicalSUN
violation of Margaret Atwood’s poem to Philip Larkin’sSUN
Toads - a study of the power work has over us, and ourSUN
need to find employment, rather than our desire.SUN
SUN
Shostakovich appears twice in the programme. The composerSUN
of some of the most despairing music written, he was a manSUN
who knew the influence authority and the state could haveSUN
on a person. The sequence exploring war and nuclearSUN
apocalypse is introduced by his 8th Quartet. It isSUN
dedicated to the victims of fascism and war – some saySUN
this is a reference to the victims of totalitarianism,SUN
while others suggest the dedication was imposed by theSUN
authorities. It has also been reported that ShostakovichSUN
thought of the work as his epitaph and that he planned toSUN
commit suicide around this time. The programme draws to aSUN
close with his last symphony. The final movement isSUN
equally as dark as the quartet. Shostakovich wasSUN
fascinated by time and clocks – his flat in Moscow isSUN
still home to many of his clocks. The ticking of theSUN
percussion brings the symphony’s ghostly coda to a close.SUN
Could the thing that has the greatest power over us beSUN
time?SUN

Claire Martin presents as South Korean piano virtuosoSUN
Yoonee talks about her current career in jazz and makingSUN
her debut in the UK.SUN
SUN
Younee from South Korea is an impressively talented,SUN
virtuosic and versatile performer, who from an early ageSUN
had a desire to break boundaries. Her learning began atSUN
the age of three, then involved studying classical pianoSUN
for the next 20 years at the Yeon Arts High School, SeoulSUN
Arts High School - culminating in a BA in Classical PianoSUN
at Yonsei University.SUN
SUN
Younee is one of a small group of highly trained classicalSUN
musicians who is equally at home on rock, pop and jazzSUN
stages. On her current trip to London she has been makingSUN
a great impression with her stunning piano virtuositySUN
'sitting in' at London jazz clubs.SUN
SUN
Through a German fan, she became a friend ofSUN
Grammy-winning American Jazz pianist Bob James. When JamesSUN
performed on a Korean TV show, he invited Younee to playSUN
his demanding piece for piano (four-hands). When sheSUN
related her desire to become an international artist,SUN
James recommended London-based American producer/composerSUN
Richard Niles.SUN
SUN
Younee was already aware of Niles' impressive career andSUN
his work with Ray Charles, Paul McCartney and Pat Metheny.SUN
When she contacted him Niles was extremely interested andSUN
very encouraging, as Niles had worked in jazz, rock, popSUN
and classical.SUN

Rana Mitter talks to Harvard moral philosopher MichaelMON
Sandel about justice, examining how we arrive at ourMON
notions of right and wrong.MON
MON
Should we not always tell the truth? Is killing sometimesMON
morally justified? Considering the role of justice inMON
society and in our lives, Sandel argues in his new bookMON
Justice: What's the Right Thing to Do? that anMON
understanding of philosophy can help us make sense ofMON
politics, religion and morality.MON
MON
Michael Sandel gave this year's BBC Radio 4 Reith lecturesMON
and his class at Harvard University is famous forMON
attracting huge numbers of students - more than 1,200 eachMON
session. His influence is such that Matt Groening and hisMON
fellow creators of The Simpsons poked fun at Sandel byMON

music and culture of Vienna between 1900 and 1935.THU
THU
A chilling and dramatic masterpiece, the work is the apexTHU
of Viennese musical Expressionism. It draws on Berg's ownTHU
experiences of the First World War and charts theTHU
eponymous hero's desperate descent into paranoia andTHU
insanity, using an intensely complex series of musicalTHU

Philip Dodd explores one of the most groundbreaking piecesTHU
of musical theatre of all time - The Threepenny Opera.THU
THU
In 1920s Weimar Berlin, Bertolt Brecht and Kurt Weill tookTHU
polite operetta and turned it into something jagged,THU
political and contemporary. The Threepenny Opera became anTHU
international hit, an early talkie followed, as didTHU
stardom for Lotte Lenya. By the time the Nazis came toTHU
power and Brecht and Weill had fled Germany there had beenTHU
no less than 130 productions around the world. Without itTHU
there would have been no Cabaret, no Chicago, no Mack theTHU
Knife.THU
THU
Every decade since has wanted its own Pirate Jenny andTHU
Peachum, its own interpretation of Brecht's tawdry London.THU
But what echoes should we find in this modern classicTHU
today? Global recession and political disillusionment? OrTHU
eternal cynicism?THU
THU
On the eve of a broadcast of a new version for BBC RadioTHU
3, Philip Dodd brings together a round table of guests toTHU
assess why The Threepenny Opera continues to intrigue, andTHU
whether it is the essential masterpiece of a duo whoTHU
brought the cruelty of the 20th century crashing intoTHU
musical theatre.THU
