SAT       One of several young Russian conductors who have taken the
SAT       helm of British orchestras over the last few years, Vasily
SAT       Petrenko has made a big impression as principal conductor
SAT       of the Royal Liverpool Philharmonic since he took up the
SAT       post in 2006. Still in his early 30’s, he became a
SAT       figurehead for Liverpool’s musical life during its year as
SAT       Capital of Culture in 2008, and has been transforming the
SAT       reputation of the city’s resident orchestra - the latest
SAT       accolade being a 2009 Gramophone Award for their recording
SAT       of Tchaikovsky's Manfred Symphony.

SAT       Tom meets Petrenko - who gave up dreams of being an
SAT       Olympic swimmer to pursue conducting - in the grandiose
SAT       surroundings of Liverpool Cathedral. They talk about his
SAT       Shostakovich symphony cycle (the first two recordings of
SAT       which have been highly acclaimed), his plans for a Mahler
SAT       symphony cycle over the next two years, and his ambition
SAT       to make the RLPO a world class orchestra.

SAT       Liverpool launched in March 2009, having been chosen as
SAT       one of three pilot projects for the government’s new
SAT       scheme of music education in England which is seeking to
SAT       emulate the success of Venezuela’s (and Scotland’s) El
SAT       Sistema.

SAT       Tom visits the project, now up and running at Faith
SAT       Primary School in the West Everton area of Liverpool. He
SAT       finds an entire school - pupils and teachers - singing and
SAT       playing string instruments together in a socially
SAT       transforming programme of music education. The RLPO’s
SAT       chief executive Michael Eakin and In Harmony project
SAT       leader Sally-Ann Anderson tell Tom what they hope to
SAT       achieve through the scheme.

SAT       Kenneth MacMillan: Different Drummer

SAT       Choreographer Kenneth MacMillan would have been 80 this
SAT       year. His life story is told in a new 700-page biography
SAT       by Jann Parry - from a difficult childhood growing up
SAT       during the war, losing his mother at the age of 12 and
SAT       facing isolation and crippling stage fright as a young
SAT       dancer, to his career as the creator of a new kind of
SAT       ballet which connected with contemporary music and the
SAT       real world.

SAT       Tom talks to the author, to dancer Jonathan Cope and
SAT       composer Brian Elias who both worked with MacMillan at the
SAT       Royal Ballet, and to his widow Deborah, about working and
SAT       living with him. And he discusses the book and MacMillan’s

SAT       This weekend the BBC Symphony Orchestra and their chief
SAT       conductor Jiri Belohlavek begin a year-long cycle of the
SAT       six symphonies by Czech composer Bohuslav Martinu.

SAT       rehearsals for No.1 (broadcast in Performance on 3 on
SAT       Monday 5th October) and asks Prague-born Belohlavek what
SAT       Martinu’s music means to him. And Martinu experts David
SAT       Nice and Sharon Choa (whose edition of the 4th the BBCSO
SAT       are using in their cycle) explain why we should hear the
SAT       symphonies more often.

SAT       In a performance given at 2009's Glyndebourne Festival,
SAT       Jiri Belohlavek conducts a production of Rusalka, Dvorak's
SAT       best-known opera. It's the first time in its history that
SAT       the famous festival has staged this tale, loosely based on
SAT       Hans Christian Andersen's The Little Mermaid, but
SAT       translated into a Czech idiom.

SAT       Rusalka, a water nymph, lives in a pool in a dark and
SAT       brooding forest. She's doomed not only to lose her lover
SAT       but to live forever as a will-o-the-wisp tempting other
SAT       men to their deaths. This critically-praised production is
SAT       directed by Melly Still, making her operatic debut, with
SAT       Anna Maria Martinez as Rusalka and American tenor Brandon
SAT       Jovanovich as the prince she falls in love with.

SUN       most important collections of Tudor keyboard music. It was
SUN       compiled in the 1560s by Thomas Mulliner, an organist at
SUN       Corpus Christi College, Oxford, and it now resides in the
SUN       British Library.

SUN       Assumed by some to have been used for training choirboys,
SUN       the book contains 121 keyboard works, of which over half
SUN       are based on liturgical chants. The collection contains
SUN       works by Thomas Tallis, John Redford, William Blitheman,
SUN       John Taverner and Christopher Tye as well as several
SUN       anonymous works.

SUN       Historian Tristram Hunt presents a series following the
SUN       surprising journeys of ideas that first developed in
SUN       Britain and then spread around the world.

SUN       As a new Supreme Court opens in the UK, Tristram Hunt
SUN       explores the idea behind it - the separation of powers. He
SUN       examines how the doctrine was developed by the French
SUN       Enlightenment thinker, Montesquieu, who observed the
SUN       British constitutional system in the 18th century -
SUN       comprising of a judiciary, an executive and a legislature
SUN       - and saw it as a way of keeping tyranny at bay.
SUN       
SUN       Tristram starts his journey in Paris where an absolute
SUN       monarchy during the 1720s led to a fierce underground
SUN       debate about liberty. Ideas flowed between Paris and
SUN       London and Montesquieu crossed the English Channel to
SUN       better understand the English constitutional system and
SUN       the English. One of the outcomes of this was his magnum
SUN       opus The Spirit of Laws, which articulates the importance
SUN       of the separation of powers to defend liberty.

SUN       This idea was also central to the framing of the United
SUN       States Constitution, and Tristram sees how the doctrine is
SUN       embodied in the layout of Capitol Hill in Washington DC,
SUN       reflecting the relationships between the Supreme Court,
SUN       the Senate and the White House.

SUN       Finally, Tristram returns to the new Supreme Court in
SUN       London to discuss whether it is, in fact, a 300-year-old

SUN       It’s 40 years since the Stonewall riots marked the start
SUN       of the gay rights movement in the United States and around
SUN       the world. In the days before Gay Liberation poets and
SUN       composers had to be circumspect in the ways they portrayed
SUN       same-sex relationships. But this need to be covert and
SUN       ambiguous produced a very particular gay sensibility in
SUN       the works of poets such as Walt Whitman, A. E. Housman,
SUN       Auden, and composers such as Tchaikovsky, Szymanowski and
SUN       Benjamin Britten. “Feasting with Panthers” is a
SUN       celebration of “The love that dare not speak its name.”
SUN       
SUN       The erotically super-charged music of Wagner’s Venusberg
SUN       underlays Aleister Crowley’s over-the-top Hymn to Pan.
SUN       Occultist, hedonist, bisexual, drug experimenter, Crowley
SUN       gained notoriety during his lifetime, and was dubbed The
SUN       Wickedest Man in the World. The ancient Greek poetess
SUN       Sappho may or may not have been lesbian (though she
SUN       certainly came from Lesbos) – but many of her poems speak
SUN       of female-female infatuations, as here in Hymn to
SUN       Aphrodite which more than hints at a Secret Love.
SUN       
SUN       Another secret love was that between the reclusive Emily
SUN       Dickinson and the young Sue Gilbert, who later married
SUN       Emily’s brother Austin. Emily sent her over three hundred
SUN       letters, with demands for affection, but because Sue was
SUN       often aloof and disagreeable, Emily was continually hurt
SUN       by what was mostly a tempestuous friendship.
SUN       
SUN       Walt Whitman’s poetry was very controversial in its time
SUN       for its overt homosexuality. He was accused of that
SUN       horrible sin not to be mentioned among Christians.
SUN       
SUN       Critics have found homoerotic overtones in the works of
SUN       our 3rd American, Herman Melville: the male bonding in
SUN       Moby Dick and the depraved attraction/hatred of the
SUN       master-at-arms John Claggart for the handsome sailor Billy
SUN       Budd – a theme which held a particular interest for Auden
SUN       and Britten.

SUN       Back to England for a pastoral interlude underlayed by
SUN       Butterworth’s “The Banks of Green Willow”: the spinsterish
SUN       A.E. Housman lusts after the lads at the fair, the
SUN       maverick Marlowe envisages Edward II’s seduction by his
SUN       minion Piers Gaveston and Katherine Fowler Philips, 17th
SUN       Century poet and apostle of female friendship addresses
SUN       her “excellent Lucasia.”

SUN       Lefroy’s poem on male physical beauty is subtitled A
SUN       Palaestral Study. In the Classical world the palaestra
SUN       was a training school for wrestling and athletics – a
SUN       concept taken up in Stravinsky’s ballet Agon (a word with
SUN       multiple meanings including the all-male athletic contests
SUN       of ancient Greece).
SUN       
SUN       The final poem, by Lord Alfred Douglas, ends with the
SUN       phrase which came to haunt Oscar Wilde’s trial for gross
SUN       indecency: “The love that dare not speak its name”. And
SUN       the programme evaporates in a cloud of sensuousness as
SUN       Roxana encourages her husband King Roger to embrace the
SUN       world view offered by the Dionysiac Shepherd who preaches
SUN       a doctrine of desire in opposition to normative Christian
SUN       values.

MON       opportunities, helping him to become one of the first
MON       artists accepted on the Jerwood Rising Stars scheme. His

THU       inventing new ways with machinery, telescopes,

THU       discoveries have lasted through the years and are critical
THU       to our lives today. His 'Hooke joint' which he developed
THU       for carriages is now used in a rear-wheel drive car to
THU       connect the drive shaft to the transmission.
