Who Was Carlos Kleiber?SAT
Ivan Hewett explores the musical enigma of the lateSAT
conductor Carlos Kleiber. Despite huge demand andSAT
adulatory critical praise for his work, he gave very fewSAT
perfomances and never granted an interview, increasingSAT
speculation about his art and personality. Ivan talks toSAT
some of the few who knew Kleiber well and attempts toSAT
explain his mercurial and electrifying genius.SAT
SAT
While most great conductors have strongly-definedSAT
profiles, views and attitudes, Kleiber, the son of anSAT
equally feted conductor was and remains an enigma, withSAT
rumours about him circulating far more freely than facts.SAT
Primarily a recluse, he could only be persuaded into theSAT
public arena, at least since the late 1980s, by theSAT
combination of a momentous event, long rehearsal times andSAT
a huge fee. These performances, though, were nothing lessSAT
than life-changing: concerts with the impact of religiousSAT
events. Kleiber was also one of the few maestros who,SAT
although very demanding at rehearsal, was adored by theSAT
musicians who played for him - and by other conductors.SAT
SAT
But why did he give so few performances? Why his obviousSAT
insecurities? Did he really only make records 'when theSAT
freezer ran out of food'? And what about Kleiber the man -SAT
his life, his friends, his loves, his obsessions?SAT

Gershwin's Let 'Em Eat CakeSAT
SAT
In a performance from the Grand Theatre in Leeds, WynSAT
Davies conducts the British premiere of George and IraSAT
Gershwin's 1933 Broadway hit musical Let 'em Eat Cake -SAT
the sequel to his more popular Of Thee I Sing.SAT
SAT
Like its follow-up, Let 'em Eat Cake was based on a bookSAT
by George S Kaufman and Morrie Ryskind, and had the sameSAT
producer, writers and stars in its original BroadwaySAT
incarnation. Its tone is much darker, though, and theSAT
issues are more complex - including ironic references toSAT
Fascism. However, Gershwin himself believed the pieceSAT
contained some of his best music, and thought it to be hisSAT
greatest achievment to date - although it never receivedSAT
the plaudits he thought it deserved.SAT
SAT
It centres on US President John P Wintergreen, who afterSAT
serving four years seeks re-election, only to find votersSAT
do not fall for his slogans and his 1930s spin. He losesSAT
the election by a landslide, but under the new regime, theSAT
political and economic situation spirals completely out ofSAT
control. Soon, Wintergreen leads a blue-shirted revolutionSAT
to victory, and the US is under the control of a new,SAT
albeit tried and tested, dictator.SAT

Hanan al-ShaykhSUN
Michael Berkeley's guest is Lebanese writer HananSUN
al-Shaykh, who grew up in a strict Shi'a MuslimSUN
environment, finishing her education at the AmericanSUN
Girls' College in Cairo. She then became a journalist inSUN
Beirut, leaving in 1975 at the outbreak of the LebaneseSUN
Civil War. She now lives in London with her family.SUN
SUN
She is the author of several novels that explore andSUN
challenge the traditional roles of women in MuslimSUN
societies. Many of her books, such as The Story of Zahra,SUN
and Women of Sand and Myrrh deal frankly with sexualSUN
issues, which have led to them being banned in moreSUN
conservative Muslim countries. Her latest work is TheSUN
Locust and the Bird, which is the story of her ownSUN
mother's life - heavily circumscribed by a patriarchalSUN
society.SUN
SUN
Hanan al-Shaykh's musical choices range from WesternSUN
classical music - a movement of Bach's Keyboard ConcertoSUN
No 1 in D minor, BWV1052, played by Murray Perahia and theSUN
Academy of St Martin in the Fields, Schubert's enigmaticSUN
song Der Zwerg (The Dwarf) and Albinoni's haunting AdagioSUN
in G minor - to American jazz (Jimmy Lunceford's Rhythm isSUN
our Business, and Billie Holiday singing Strange Fruit).SUN
She also chooses part of Philip Glass's soundtrack to theSUN
film Temple of the Golden Pavilion and two differentSUN
examples of music from the Middle East, including musicSUN
for the Christian Good Friday ceremonies.SUN

Ideas - The British Version (Series 2), Heartland TheorySUN
Historian Tristram Hunt presents a series following theSUN
surprising journeys of ideas that first developed inSUN
Britain and then spread around the world.SUN
SUN
He traces the story of Sir Halford Mackinder, a forgottenSUN
British geographer, and his geopolitical 'HeartlandSUN
Theory'. Mackinder argued that the geography of EurasiaSUN
meant that Russia and its border countries constituted aSUN
vast fortress, land-locked and impregnable - and that ifSUN
this 'heartland' ever fell under the control of a singleSUN
great power, it would give it the potential to dominateSUN
the world.SUN
SUN
HIs idea, first aired in 1904, was largely ignored inSUN
Britain, but in the years after the First World War, itSUN
was taken up - and twisted into a disturbing new shape -SUN
by a German geopolitician called Karl Haushofer. HaushoferSUN
was Rudolf Hess's intellectual mentor, and tutored him andSUN
Hitler while they were in prison in Munich in the 1920s.SUN
Haushofer drew on Mackinder to argue that Germany shouldSUN
form a grand alliance with Russia and Japan, in order toSUN
dominate the Heartland.SUN
SUN
So when news of the Nazi-Soviet Pact surprised the worldSUN
in August 1939, American interest in Mackinder's theorySUN
suddenly sparked into life, and spread like wildfire. InSUN
the early 1940s, books, articles and even a Frank CapraSUN
propaganda movie - which Tristram watches with Mackinder'sSUN
biographer - spelt out the Heartland idea and Haushofer'sSUN
perversion of it, dubbing it the 'Nazi plan for worldSUN
domination'.SUN
SUN
Finally, as it became clear that Germany would lose theSUN
war, the elderly Mackinder himself was reached in his WestSUN
Country bolthole by the New York-based Foreign AffairsSUN
magazine. They invited him to give his own take on how hisSUN
theory was relevant to the coming post-war world. TristramSUN
goes to meet the current Managing Editor of the magazine,SUN
to see the letters between his predecessor and Mackinder,SUN
and how the resulting article helped to set the stage forSUN
the world after the war.SUN
SUN
Leading American foreign policy thinkers, steeped by nowSUN
in Mackinder's newly-prominent analysis, began to argueSUN
that the emerging Soviet superpower needed to beSUN
contained. Tristram talks to US foreign policy analysts,SUN
including a former American Deputy National SecuritySUN
Advisor, who argue that Mackinder's ideas underpinnedSUN
America's approach to the emerging Cold War.SUN
SUN
But is Mackinder relevant today, 20 years after the fallSUN
of the Soviet Union? Tristram talks to scholars who argueSUN
that the Heartland Theory is now being rediscovered in theSUN
Heartland itself - in Russia and Central Asia.SUN

An American LandscapeSUN
SUN
Last broadcast on Sun, 1 Mar 2009, 22:15 on BBC Radio 3SUN
SUN
On a cold, gusting morning of January 1961 the poet RobertSUN
Frost set out to read a specially composed poem at theSUN
inauguration of John F Kennedy, the man on whom allSUN
America’s hopes were pinned. But the sun’s glare and theSUN
newness of the poem robbed Frost of his ability, hisSUN
confidence, to read. He fell back on a poem he’d writtenSUN
in 1942. The Gift Outright explores in its few lines oneSUN
of the deepest and darkest matters facing Americans: theSUN
nature of their brief relationship with the land, a landSUN
once occupied by others. The poem, read by Jeff Perry isSUN
followed by Virgil Thomson’s film score The Plow ThatSUN
Broke the Plains, which was sponsored by the United StatesSUN
Resettlement Administration.SUN
SUN
As the orchestrator of Gershwin’s Rhapsody in Blue, FerdeSUN
Grofé couldn’t have been closer to the heart of AmericanSUN
music. In 1916, Grofé drove across the Arizona desert withSUN
a group of friends to watch the sun rise over the GrandSUN
Canyon. He was later inspired by the experience to composeSUN
his famous Grand Canyon Suite.SUN
SUN
Some years before, in the late 1860’s John Wesley Powell,SUN
a soldier turned naturalist embarked on the firstSUN
geological survey of the Grand Canyon. His journal, whichSUN
starts as a dry analysis of rock samples and descriptionSUN
of geological formations finally becomes a painting and aSUN
hymn of praise to this unique American landscape. I foundSUN
writer and composer speaking in one language in theirSUN
breathless excitement in the presence of the Grand Canyon.SUN
I think you’ll agree that Grofé’s music and Powell’sSUN
journal exactly describe each other.SUN
SUN
Etta Baker's Appalachian guitar music is followed bySUN
Copland’s take on the same region: part of his balletSUN
score Appalachian Spring. The White Mountains, part of theSUN
Appalachian mountains, the most rugged in New England,SUN
were visited in the 1830s by the novelist NathanielSUN
Hawthorne who wrote an awe-inspiring account of his trip.SUN
His connection with the area was forever sealed by hisSUN
death there on a subsequent visit many years later.SUN
Copland’s classic orchestration of the Shaker hymn SimpleSUN
Gifts ends this section and is itself topped off by theSUN
Mormon Tabernacle Choir’s own version of the original hymn.SUN
SUN
The composer Philip Glass has composed America with aSUN
photographer’s eye, his unique, self-styled voice, mappingSUN
America and American life and shipping it across the worldSUN
as the soundtrack of numerous films. His early score toSUN
The Photographer, unswerving in its forward drive is theSUN
adjunct to Robert Lowell’s haunting poem, The Mouth of theSUN
Hudson, a description of a man standing on an outcropSUN
above a railroad siding and watching the trains switchingSUN
beneath him. It’s a neutral description until the wordSUN
‘unforgivable’ at the end.SUN
SUN
The 20th century American composer Roy Harris was born inSUN
1898 to poor parents, in a log cabin in Oklahoma, onSUN
Abraham Lincoln's birthday. He had the perfect opportunitySUN
to survey the American landscape as he worked for manySUN
years as a trucker, criss-crossing the continent. You canSUN
hear the lie of the land in his masterpiece Symphony No.3.SUN
I mixed the symphony with John Ashbery’s poem Pyrography,SUN
an elliptical commentary of America, written to accompanySUN
a travelling exhibition of American landscape paintings.SUN
SUN
We end with Charles Ives, possibly the composer whoSUN
captured the spirit of America better than any other.SUN
Whilst Harris was a trucker, Ives’s main job was inSUN
insurance. That was no bar to him writing his totallySUN
original and uncompromising musical reflection of theSUN
America he saw and heard. His Three Places in New EnglandSUN
here prepares the way for Henry James’s reflection on theSUN
New England landscape, which I have mixed with Ives’sSUN
contemplative masterpiece The Unanswered Question.SUN
Appropriately, that piece ends the programme.SUN

Halle - Britten, Strauss, ShostakovichMON
MON
In a concert given at the Bridgewater Hall in Manchester,MON
Mark Elder conducts the Halle in music by Britten, StraussMON
and Shostakovich.MON
MON
It begins with the variations he wrote on a theme by hisMON
teacher Frank Bridge, Britten cast each variation as aMON
memento to a specific quality in the elder composer'sMON
personality, aiming to capture his teacher'sMON
'energy...charm...wit...gaiety', as he wrote on theMON
manuscript.MON
MON
This is followed by Richard Strauss's autumnal Second HornMON
Concerto and Shostakovich's stormy and lyrical Symphony NoMON
5. Written in 1937, in response to his incurring the wrathMON
of the Soviet musical authorities, it is one of theMON
composer's most popular works, and has an underlyingMON
darkness and an ironically triumphant finale - both aMON
Stalinist victory hymn and a parody of one.MON

Maureen Waller/Gustav MetzgerMON
Philip Dodd talks to historian Maureen Waller about herMON
book telling the story of the English marriage through theMON
ages. It reveals the plight of wives who were in the sameMON
legal category as lunatics and explains the process ofMON
chaotic change that has left us with the marital laws weMON
have now. What does this much-cherished institution sayMON
about the mores of the English character?MON
MON
Plus a conversation with German artist Gustav Metzger,MON
ahead of a retrospective of his work. The exhibition looksMON
back over six decades of Metzger's working life,MON
particularly the auto-destructive and auto-creativeMON
artworks with which he has become associated. Born toMON
German-Jewish parents and educated in England, MetzgerMON
maintains a longstanding engagement with left-wingMON
politics and an opposition to capitalism. He explains toMON
Philip about his life and the major themes present in hisMON
work.MON

TUE
Professor Nicholas Cronk, director of the VoltaireTUE
Foundation at the University of Oxford, explores howTUE
Voltaire's encounter with English culture both influencedTUE
the writer personally and had far-reaching consequencesTUE
for Enlightenment thinking generally.TUE
TUE
He explains why Voltaire came to England in the firstTUE
place and considers why the book of essays he wrote -TUE
Letters Concerning the English Nation - has been describedTUE
as 'the first bomb thrown at the ancient regime' - aTUE
praise of the country and a covert criticismTUE
pre-revolutionary France.TUE
TUE
With his vivid and often highly contemporary observationsTUE
on religion, business, politics, science, philosophy andTUE
literature, Voltaire's book on England is as strikingTUE
today as it was to both French and English readers when itTUE
was first published in 1733.TUE

Enlightenment Voices, Voltaire, Voltaire and ReligionTHU
Series exploring the work of the French writer andTHU
philosopher Voltaire.THU
THU
The cataclysmic Lisbon earthquake of 1755, in which tensTHU
of thousands of people died, is the starting point ofTHU
Professor Simon Blackburn, of Cambridge University'sTHU
philopsophy department, as he examines Voltaire's views onTHU
religion and belief. The event occurred on All Saints' DayTHU
- November 1st - which meant that the churches in one ofTHU
the godliest cities in Catholic Europe were all packed,THU
while the brothels were relatively empty. Where, VoltaireTHU
wondered, was divine providence in all this?THU
THU
Professor Blackburn explores not only Voltaire'sTHU
coruscating views on the corrupt and powerful establishedTHU
Church, but also the complex question of his lingeringTHU
faith. Above all, he examines the practical effect ofTHU
Voltaire's ideas, celebrating the role of theTHU
Enlightenment in replacing the altars and thrones of anTHU
older Europe with the largely secular constitutionalTHU
democracies that followed.THU

LegacyFRI
Series exploring the work of the French writer andFRI
philosopher Voltaire.FRI
FRI
Professor Nicholas Cronk, director of the VoltaireFRI
Foundation at the University of Oxford, explores theFRI
legacy of this greatest of Enlightenment figures. WhenFRI
Voltaire died in 1778 aged 84, he was the most famousFRI
writer in the world and his immortality was assured.FRI
FRI
Nicholas recounts the extraordinary story of the removalFRI
of Voltaire's library of around 7,000 books from hisFRI
chateau in France all the way to St Petersburg, whereFRI
Catherine the Great planned to build a type of VoltaireFRI
theme park.FRI
FRI
He explores Voltaire's celebrity status, both before andFRI
after his death, and goes on to discuss how his ideasFRI
about politics, religion and tolerance continue toFRI
resonate today. Nicholas concludes with an illustration ofFRI
how - in the true spirit of the Enlightenment - writersFRI
continue to debate with Voltaire and, in so doing,FRI
perpetuate his legacy.FRI
