SAT       To start the new season of Music Matters, Tom Service
SAT       reports from the Hungarian capital of Budapest. Twenty
SAT       years since the fall of communism, this year also marks
SAT       the 125th anniversary of the opera house, the 5th since
SAT       Hungary joined the EU, and a year since the International
SAT       Monetary Fund bailed out Hungary’s economy. Hungary is a
SAT       country in which society, politics, and music are
SAT       inextricably linked - Tom was there to experience one of
SAT       the richest musical cultures in the world, and to find out
SAT       how the politics of the past two decades have affected the
SAT       musical life of Hungary and its musicians.

SAT       Folk Music and Politics
SAT       
SAT       Tom begins his exploration of Hungary’s rich musical
SAT       traditions at the Fono folk club in Budapest, where locals
SAT       meet to dance every Wednesday evening. He then travels
SAT       south of Budapest to Kecskemet, the birthplace of Zoltan
SAT       Kodaly and home to the Kodaly Institute. He talks with
SAT       founding director Peter Erdei about Kodaly’s passions for
SAT       folk music and politics, and his method of music education.

SAT       Hungarian pianist Andras Schiff tells how Russian tanks
SAT       rolled down the streets near his home in the 1950s, and of
SAT       the restrictions he faced under the communist regime which
SAT       led him to leave his native country. On a boat on the
SAT       banks of the Danube in central Budapest, Tom talks to BBC
SAT       Central European Correspondent Nick Thorpe, who has lived
SAT       in the city for 23 years, about the social and cultural
SAT       changes in Hungary in the years since the fall of
SAT       communism.

SAT       Kodaly’s method still inspires music education in Hungary,
SAT       yet Tom discovers that things have not necessarily changed
SAT       for the better since the communist era.

SAT       Visiting Toth Aladar, one of Budapest’s state music
SAT       schools for children aged 6 upwards, Tom hears students
SAT       playing and talks to director Margit Magyar about the
SAT       state of Hungary’s music education. And a short distance
SAT       away at the most important building in Hungarian musical
SAT       culture, the Franz Liszt Academy, rector Andras Batta and
SAT       pianist Gabor Farkas talk about the tension between
SAT       tradition and innovation, and Tom meets celebrated folk
SAT       singer Marta Sebestyen, whose mother studied
SAT       ethnomusicology with Kodaly.

SAT       Orchestral Life and the Future

SAT       The two major orchestras in Budapest – the Budapest
SAT       Festival Orchestra with principal conductor Ivan Fischer,
SAT       and the Hungarian National Philharmonic Orchestra under
SAT       pianist-conductor Zoltan Kocsis – share a performance
SAT       space in the impressive National Palace of the Arts, which
SAT       opened in 2004. Tom meets them both to talk about the
SAT       relationship between the two ensembles and the issue of
SAT       state involvement in the arts.

SAT       Hungary has produced a long line of great composers from
SAT       Liszt, Bartok and Kodaly to Ligeti, Kurtag and Eotvos –
SAT       Tom meets one of the brightest young contemporary
SAT       composers, Balazs Horvath, to discuss their legacy and the
SAT       future for classical music in the country. And at a café
SAT       overlooking the Hungarian Parliament, he talks to young
SAT       folk singer sensation Bea Palya about the importance of
SAT       keeping tradition alive.

SAT       house, which celebrates its 125th anniversary this year.

SAT       became a shelter to musicians including Zoltan Kodaly

SAT       spoke to soprano Andrea Rost about the significance of
SAT       performing in her home country.

SAT       Lucie Skeaping presents a concert given by the Huelgas
SAT       Ensemble under their music director Paul van Nevel at
SAT       Greyfriars Kirk in Edinburgh, as part of the 2009
SAT       Edinburgh International Festival.

SAT       The ensemble, which is named after a Cistercian monastery
SAT       near Burgos in Spain, has been established since 1970 and
SAT       has carved a reputation as one of the leading vocal
SAT       ensembles in Europe. The group is particularly famous for
SAT       its pioneering recordings of music by composers from the
SAT       Franco-Flemish school, such as Nicholas Gombert and Pierre
SAT       de Manchicourt.

SAT       This concert juxtaposes sacred music by two composers of
SAT       different generations - Michael Praetorius and Bach.
SAT       Arguably the most famous composers of the German chorale
SAT       tradition, they based many of their compositions on the
SAT       same basic material. Here, the eight voices and seven
SAT       instrumentalists of the Huelgas Ensemble show how both
SAT       composers treat the same texts, in very different ways.

SAT       which is said to make bulls weep as they operate an
SAT       ancient sugar press. The programme ends in the unofficial
SAT       musical capital, Mindelo, on the island of Sao Vicente,
SAT       where Cesaria Evora was born and where many other Cape
SAT       Verdean greats began their careers. Including sessions by

SUN       Domenico Zipoli, a contemporary of Bach and Handel who
SUN       seemed to disappear from European musical life just as he
SUN       was making his mark with the publication of his first
SUN       work, the Sonate d'intavolatura per organo e cimbalo.
SUN       
SUN       Did his early promise fade and leave him resigned to a
SUN       life of obscurity? No. Scholars had known for a while that
SUN       there was another Domenico Zipoli, active just after this
SUN       time in Paraguay, but it wasn't until the 1950s that it
SUN       was realised that the two composers were in fact one and
SUN       the same.
SUN       
SUN       He had joined the Jesuit reductiones and gone to South
SUN       America - music played a pivotal role in in the missions,
SUN       fulfilling the Jesuits' aim of transmitting the idea of
SUN       God to the natives. The music he composed there was
SUN       thought to be lost, until at the beginning of the 1960s
SUN       when a mass for three-part choir (without bass), soloists,
SUN       two violins, organ and continuo was located, reading:
SUN       'copied in Potossi, in the year 1784', that is 58 years
SUN       after the composer's death. The fact that over half a
SUN       century after Zipoli's death his works were still
SUN       performed in Argentina and in Higher Peru clearly reflect
SUN       his importance. Then, in 1972, 5000 pages of manuscript
SUN       music were accidentally discovered i

SUN       tender age of eleven, playing the role of Titania in
SUN       George Coleman's Covent Garden production of Thomas Arne's

SUN       roles as she grew into womanhood. By the time she was
SUN       fifteen, she was a very attractive young lady indeed, and
SUN       used her feminine wiles to attract a string of rather
SUN       undesirable suitors. After she eloped with a married man
SUN       eighteen years her senior, her father eventually washed
SUN       his hands of her. She continued to be a popular draw at
SUN       Drury Lane, in productions of John Gay's The Beggar's
SUN       Opera and Thom
SUN       
SUN       In Bombay, however, she received a mixed reception. Some
SUN       were delighted that such a charming and talented young
SUN       woman was providing entertainment by giving performances
SUN       of her famous arias; others, however, were distinctly
SUN       unimpressed that an English strumpet was parading around
SUN       far-flung corners of the Empire, flaunting her bastard son
SUN       and bringing shame and embarrassment to the nation. One
SUN       such, was the Prime Minister, William Pitt the Younger,
SUN       who sent word via the East India Company that Mrs Cargill
SUN       and Captain Haldane should return to Britain forthwith.
SUN       So, in December 1783, they boarded their ship - the Nancy
SUN       Packet - and set sail for London once again.
SUN       
SUN       The journey was long and arduous, and they finally arrived
SUN       in British waters in February 1784, amidst a horrific
SUN       gale. In the middle of the night, the ship became
SUN       hopelessly lost, and struck one of the many treacherous
SUN       rocks off the western reaches of Scilly. Ann Cargill,
SUN       still wearing her nightclothes, managed to scramble into a
SUN       lifeboat with her infant son, heading for Rosevear Island,
SUN       which appeared to be the nearest safe haven.
SUN       
SUN       The Nancy Packet broke apart and sank in the tumult, and
SUN       it wasn't for another seven days that the weather abated
SUN       enough for locals to venture out to the wreck site to see
SUN       if there were any survivors. They discovered the upturned
SUN       lifeboat just off a small bay on Rosevear Island, and
SUN       underneath, found Ann Cargill, floating in her nightgown,
SUN       with her head resting on her baby's, as if in sleep. It
SUN       was a melancholy scene to break any heart.
SUN       
SUN       All the dead were buried in makeshift graves on top of
SUN       Rosevear Island, until a wealthy businessman offered to
SUN       pay for Ann Cargill, John Haldane and their son to have a
SUN       proper burial at the Old Town Church on St. Mary's. It's
SUN       said that those who have visited Rosevear Island since the
SUN       disaster struck, have heard an unearthly singing.

SUN       treasure hunter, who found the wreck of the Nancy Packet
SUN       in 2007, and has since written a book about his findings
SUN       and about the life and death of Ann Cargill.

SUN       No mention of man’s wickedness or God’s wrath... nothing
SUN       in fact to explain that the rainbow is an emblem of God’s
SUN       covenant with those who survive the Flood.

SUN       Then there’s the question of what it all means. Is it a
SUN       blunt cautionary tale for an ungoldy age? Is it a
SUN       Darwinian fable about survival? Or could it be a prophecy
SUN       of impending ecological disaster? However you choose to
SUN       read it the tale of Noah and his Ark has proved
SUN       perennially fascinating.

SUN       Noah's voyage from God's anger to landfall on Mount Ararat
SUN       is the journey of mankind but also of man. Few of us are
SUN       wholly unfamiliar with the shame of howling moral decay
SUN       and the salvation of new beginnings; few of us have
SUN       resisted the temptation to disguise our fear with laughter.

SUN       This evening Blake and Milton jostle for space in the hold
SUN       of our virtual ark with comic turns from Chaucer, Julian
SUN       Barnes and Stanley Holloway amongst others while the
SUN       actors Claire Skinner and Andrew Scott keep things

SUN       count on hearing from Britten, Saint Saens, Bruch and
SUN       Rossini. As a concession to modernity its been decided

SUN       Claire Martin presents an interview with versatile pianist
SUN       Mark Latimer. His latest commission, Two Dragons, is an
SUN       installation for the Big Pit coalmine in South Wales and
SUN       is about to have its official opening. The composition
SUN       refers to the mining communities of Chongqing in Central
SUN       China and South Wales. It is a digital presentation
SUN       involving modern jazz, improvisation and folk instruments
SUN       from both Chinese and Western music traditions, with
SUN       spoken word in Welsh, English and Mandarin, as well as
SUN       work by digital artist Alex So.
SUN       
SUN       Latimer is a musician equally at home with classical and
SUN       jazz repertoire - he first appeared on the programme with
SUN       his trio, featuring Harold Fisher on drums. Since then he
SUN       has taken part in many projects and albums, including
SUN       recitals at two prominent London venues, St John's, Smith
SUN       Square and the Wigmore Hall.
SUN       
SUN       There is also a concert by Israeli-born drummer Asaf
SUN       Sirkis given at the Jazzland Club, Swansea. He performs
SUN       with Tassos Spiliotopoulos on guitar and Yaron Stavi on
SUN       electric bass.

MON       Jez Nelson presents a gig by young Polish pianist Marcin
MON       Wasilewski recorded at Kings Place in London in 2009. The
MON       set includes music from his latest album, January, whose
MON       refined compositions demonstrate a laid-back elegance and
MON       gently pulsing rhythms. This is Wasilewski's second album
MON       as leader on Manfred Eicher's ECM label and has sealed his
MON       name as a promising individual voice.

MON       The trio, featuring Slawomir Kurkiewicz on bass and
MON       drummer Michal Miskiewicz are childhood friends, playing
MON       together since their teens. The great Polish trumpeter
MON       Tomasz Stanko discovered them at the age of 18. Taking
MON       them under his wing, Stanko took the trio on tour with
MON       him, introducing them to the lifestyle of a working
MON       musician. They have since formed the rhythm section for a
MON       number of Stanko's albums, including the
MON       critically-praised Soul of Things.

WED       relationship with the Russian Orthodox nun, Mother Thekla.

WED       Tavener had an extraordinary bond with his mother. When he
WED       married, Tavener couldn't bear to be parted from her and,
WED       not surprisingly, his marriage foundered. The death of his
WED       mother hit him very hard, but not long afterwards another
WED       woman was to take her place - a nun called Mother Thekla,
WED       with whom Tavener would have a close friendship and unique
WED       working relationship for many years.

WED       With a work based on a translation by Mother Thekla of the
WED       remarkable writings of a priest, written shortly before
WED       his death in a prison camp in Siberia, as well as a
WED       complete performance of one of the most frequently
WED       performed contemporary works in recent years.
