Dr Ian Bradley travels to Baden in Austria and Baden-BadenSAT
in Germany to discover how in the 18th and 19th centuries,SAT
amidst the fountains and cascades, the Kurparks andSAT
casinos, these European spa towns inspired seriousSAT
composition from the likes of Mozart, Beethoven, BrahmsSAT
and Berlioz.SAT
SAT
In conversation with local guides and on location inSAT
casinos, parks and even taking a dip in the spas, BradleySAT

Including Mozart climbing through windows to visit hisSAT
ailing wife and his musical gift to the local churchSAT

Italian FantasySAT
SAT
A beaker full of the warm South tonight, as yearned for bySAT
Keats, and as unforgettably experienced by many a visitorSAT
to Italy from the cold north. A glass of Chianti would beSAT
the ideal accompaniment to this Italian Fantasy whichSAT
blends the reminiscences of English-speaking travellersSAT
and the music of Italy, both authentic and as imagined bySAT
visiting composers.SAT
It's a series of snapshots, of light older than wine ,SAT
solitary pines which whisper of pre-ChristianSAT
conspiracies, of gaudy baroque fountains which , on closerSAT
inspection, may not be at all suitable for the politeSAT
visitor, of food, sea, castles and ruins. And of courseSAT
there are the tourists, the great hordes of substantialSAT
dollar-bringing virgins as memorably sketched bySAT
e.e.cummings, with their Baedekers, Mothers and Kodaks.SAT
We hear from the earlier tourists of the age of Byron andSAT
Shelley, awed by the ruins of Rome and Pompeii. And fromSAT
Mark Twain, perhaps rather less awed at Pompeii and moreSAT
concerned with the realities of life and taxes before theSAT
eruption. If Twain had made his visit a few years later heSAT
would have been able to ride up Vesuvius on the newSAT
funicular railway so famously celebrated in song.SAT
Robert Browning, that great Italophile, describes aSAT
windswept feast after wine making, and who else butSAT
Elizabeth David to mouth wateringly describe the famousSAT
white truffles of Alba.SAT
Music includes Berlioz' Harold in Italy which wasSAT
inspired by Byron's Childe Harold's Pilgrimage, and theSAT
Byronic Bob Dylan is also inspired by Rome. Thomas Hardy,SAT
rather unexpectedly, describes hearing a Strauss waltzSAT
while on the Palatine. There is music from Respighi, hisSAT
famous descriptions of the pines and fountains of Rome ,SAT
as well as one of his Ancient Airs and Dances at the end,SAT
the original renaissance version of which is heard earlierSAT
in the programme on the lute. The impressionistic music ofSAT
Debussy follows the impressionistic verse of GabrielleSAT
D'Annunzio, Sir John Betjeman is heard reading (to music)SAT
his own gentle parody of Longfellow's verse and.we hearSAT
from an Italian Trallalero team, a traditional form ofSAT
singing from Liguria, performed while standing in a circle.SAT
We end with the great Italian poet Leopardi and his hymnSAT
to the power of the imagination, L'infinito.SAT
So conjure up the Italy of your imagination - no BaedekerSAT
required. Elizabeth Funning (producer)SAT

Searching for Alfred in the Shadow of TennysonSUN
Poet and writer Ruth Padel goes in search of the realSUN
Alfred, Lord Tennyson, a poet who for many people today isSUN
an iconic image of the Victorian era. We know him as QueenSUN
Victorian's Poet Laureate, an imposing figure with a beardSUN
and cape and the author of long poems often based on mythsSUN
and legends. But this image hides other facets of TennysonSUN
and obscures the fact that many creative artists today areSUN
drawing on his work.SUN
SUN
Championing him as a poet for our times as well as hisSUN
own, Ruth talks to figures as diverse as poet and formerSUN
Laureate Andrew Motion, novelists Andrew O' Hagan and AdamSUN
Foulds, poet Jo Shapcott, rock musician Dani Filth, andSUN
academics Robert Douglas-Fairhurst and Angela Leighton.SUN
She hears how the figure of Tennyson has been anSUN
inspiration to them.SUN
SUN
Ruth also investigates the real Alfred behind the image ofSUN
grandeur. She finds out about his preoccupation with whatSUN
he called the 'black blood' of his family, whose membersSUN
were prone to breakdowns, alcoholism and madness. And sheSUN
hears how these concerns led to Tennyson's ability toSUN
articulate neurosis and loss in his work even though, asSUN
Poet Laureate, he became an Establishment figure.SUN

The DoubleSUN
SUN
A sequence of poetry, prose and music exploring theSUN
disturbing world of shadows and ghostly doubles, withSUN
readings by Janie Dee and Nicholas Farrell.SUN
SUN
With works by Edgar Allan Poe, Robert Louis Stevenson,SUN
Dostoevsky, Heine, Wilde, Robert Lowell and KhalilSUN
Ghibran, interspersed with music by Bach, Boulez, SchubertSUN
and Steve Reich.SUN
SUN
Ever since reading Dostoevsky's novella The Double, ISUN
have been haunted by the idea of the doppelganger - theSUN
sinister ghostly twin. Not only does it make greatSUN
fiction, but the idea of the 'shadow aspect' asSUN
expounded by Jung, and the embodiment of all our repressedSUN
inadequacies, has resonance with all manner of modernSUN
anxieties. This episode of Words and Music is an attemptSUN
to capture some of the spectrum of great writing on thisSUN
subject - from the worlds of evil twins, nervous shadows,SUN
and slowly disintegrating mental faculties - and ally thisSUN
with music that not only explores ideas of doubling, butSUN
creates its own jittery, confused, and occasionallySUN
violent musical narrative.SUN
SUN
Starting at the lighter end of the spectrum, RobertSUN
Dodsley's whimsical 'Song' casts doubts on theSUN
surety of human perception, and sets up the gentleSUN
dislocation of Steve Reich's 'New YorkSUN
Counterpoint'. Reich, a composer whose compositionalSUN
practice explores ideas of phasing, placing similarSUN
musical material out of sync with itself, seemed a perfectSUN
place to begin, and is someone whose work I return to.SUN
SUN
Eighth century Chinese poet Li Po's, 'Drinking AloneSUN
with Moonlight', gives an interesting perspective on theSUN
solitary, talking to oneself and the moon, creating inSUN
one's shadow the beginning of a more sinister doubleSUN
which is soon joined by Francis Carey Slater's darkerSUN
'Shadow' - one borne perhaps from past trauma. It isSUN
upsetting recollection that is the theme of Heine'sSUN
famous poem that follows, where a man encounters his ownSUN
double staring at his now ex-lover's window, the senseSUN
of melancholy heightened by a fragile, wavering 1948SUN
recording of Chopin's fourth Prelude by BennoSUN
Moiseiwitsch.SUN
SUN
Surprisingly no less poetic, psychiatrist Carl Jung statesSUN
his case for a psychological double, and in a cannySUN
fictional parallel Stevenson's Dr Jekyll recalls hisSUN
theories on the 'primitive duality of man'. EdmundSUN
Campion's work 'Losing Touch' for vibraphone andSUN
electronics begins to unpick this duality, as theSUN
electronics create a nervous, jumpy response to theSUN
sweeter toned vibraphone. There is also a touch of theSUN
cosmic in the starry interplay between mallets andSUN
circuitboards as both readers reappear with SimonSUN
Armitage's miniature 'Gemini' - a disturbing imageSUN
of the celestial twins that speaks volumes within its fewSUN
words.SUN
SUN
A multi layered musical double appears next as the twinSUN
strands of Bach's canonic two-part invention meander offSUN
in joyous self-reflection, but on another level areSUN
joined, like a ghostly image in a photograph, by pianistSUN
Glenn Gould's distant, disembodied humming. In JohnSUN
Clare's 'For the Vision of Time' the stooped old manSUN
who whispers with his alarmingly more upright shadow maySUN
well be sharing the same concerns as the Fleet Foxes inSUN
their haunting 'Tiger Mountain Peasant Song'. TheSUN
disembodiment intensifies, with Pierre Boulez'sSUN
'Dialogue de l'Ombre Double', as an amplified soloSUN
clarinet dances with a taped shadow of itself. As withSUN
Gould's humming, here the eerie musical penumbra comesSUN
from the speakers being placed inside a piano, the naturalSUN
reverberations enhancing the sense of dislocation.SUN
SUN
Duality replaces dislocation in Sir Edmund WilliamSUN
Gosse's 'The Twofold Voice', as he imagines aSUN
classical double, whilst Mr Golyadkin, the hapless hero ofSUN
Dostoevsky's novella, comes to the unhappy conclusionSUN
that the man sat opposite him is 'none other than heSUN
himself, another Mr Golyadkin'. And here the shadowsSUN
have become real, the internalised fears and inadequaciesSUN
have taken on human form. Mr Golyadkin's meeting withSUN
his double only serves to hasten his mental decline, andSUN
the two plodding double basses of Ornette Coleman's epicSUN
collective improvisation 'Free Jazz' brilliantlySUN
illustrates the division of the Golyadkin mind set.SUN
Isolated one on each stereo channel the contrasting stylesSUN
of bassists Charlie Haden and Scott LaFaro become the twoSUN
increasingly frantic sides of Mr Golyadkin's splittingSUN
persona.SUN
SUN
As 'Free Jazz' disintegrates into the sound of theSUN
sea, the conversation becomes internalised as MikeSUN
Barlow's 'The Boat in my Brain' offers a serene, yetSUN
confused picture of losing one's mind, and this serenitySUN
is reflected in the gentle rocking of Steve Reich'sSUN
string work 'Duet', as the two violins occasionallySUN
strain the timing of their canonic melodies over theSUN
throbbing of the strings below. In an extract from 'TheSUN
Madman' Khalil Gibran imagines not two but seven selvesSUN
discoursing at night, and it is these seven voices thatSUN
proceed to wind round each other in Purcell's In NomineSUN
for seven viols.SUN
SUN
In a brief diversion into the world of the reflectedSUN
double, we hear Oscar Wilde's Dorian Gray selling hisSUN
soul for the chance to stay as beautiful as his portrait,SUN
whilst the distinctly unbeautiful 'Fat man in theSUN
mirror' unravels at the sight of what he has become andSUN
loses himself in somewhat manic childhood reminiscence.SUN
This mania intensifies as the two voices of SteveSUN
Reich's early tape piece 'Come Out' grow furtherSUN
apart and multiply, like the voices in one's head, andSUN
are muddled by the chirping of Lars Fredriksen's 108SUN
Chinese crickets. The 'heavy animal part' of man fromSUN
Gosse's earlier poem returns, trying to escape, perhapsSUN
like Gibran's seven selves, from inside JamesSUN
Stephen's 'Cage', in a 'busy, timid rage'. AndSUN
it is this busy timidity that characterises MrSUN
Golyadkin's second appearance - no longer so sure ofSUN
mind, having been thoroughly unsettled by his double.SUN
SUN
Heine's Doppelganger reappears too, but this time inSUN
Schubert's song setting, voiced with clarity and powerSUN
by the baritone Dietrich Fischer-Dieskau, whose anger atSUN
his shadowy double is perhaps a precursor of Jung'sSUN
'demonic dynamism'. It is certainly a demonic forceSUN
that then motivates and delights the transformed Mr Hyde,SUN
as he relishes, despite the agonies of his transformation,SUN
the possibilities of unfettered wickedness.SUN
SUN
An excerpt from Bartok's second string quartet, writtenSUN
during the hardships of the first world war, provides theSUN
tumbling violent energy that Mr Hyde now possesses andSUN
brings us to the climax of Poe's 'William Wilson',SUN
where the real and the psychological meet, and in killingSUN
his double Wilson has ultimately destroyed something vitalSUN
within himself, something I'm sure Jung would haveSUN
agreed with. The agonies both real and imagined hit WilsonSUN
with the force of Harrison Birtwistle's orchestralSUN
climax, but, as with so many of the texts, it is hard toSUN
know how much of this is real, and how much the separationSUN
of the conscious and unconscious mind. Paul Auster'sSUN
poem, 'n memory of myself', brings the journey backSUN
to the internal, where maybe this separation has nowSUN
become irreversible.SUN
SUN
My thanks to readers Janie Dee and Nicholas Farrell forSUN
bringing to such vivid life the double world I hadSUN
imagined.SUN

Tennyson 200, Vicki Feaver on UlyssesMON
Series in which contemporary British poets choose a singleMON

why it means so much to them.MON
MON
Vicki Feaver talks about Tennyson's long poem Ulysses,MON
about the aged hero of Greek myth, driven to travelMON
onwards even after reaching his home on Ithaca and hisMON
long-suffering wife Penelope. Tennyson was only 24 when heMON
wrote it, soon after hearing of the death of his dearMON
friend Arthur Hallam.MON
MON
Feaver believes the poem is about far more than physicalMON
travel or coping with grief. For her, Ulysses is about theMON
need of the artist always to move forward - not, in herMON
case, to succumb to benign pressure to tend her garden orMON
be a good grandmother but to pursue her art and to followMON
Tennyson's rallying cry 'to strive, to seek, to find andMON
not to yield'.MON

TUE
In 1877, Tchaikovsky took a sudden decision to getTUE
married. He wasn't the first or last homosexual man to doTUE
so, but the repercussions were calamitous, and the eventTUE
triggered a crisis from which some believe TchaikovskyTUE
never fully recovered. However, this was also the year ofTUE
two superlative pieces of music, both awash withTUE
references that listeners have since interpreted asTUE
autobiographical.TUE

2009, Proms Plus, The Victorian NovelTUE
Proms Literary FestivalTUE
TUE
As part of the festival's Victorian season, Matthew SweetTUE
is joined by Roy Hattersley and Valentine Cunningham asTUE
they champion the Victorian novel in all its forms. FromTUE
the elegance of Jane Austen and the thrilling sensationTUE
novels of Wilkie Collins to the stately realism of GeorgeTUE
Eliot and the bleakness of Thomas Hardy, the VictorianTUE
novel is a treasure trove of literary riches.TUE
TUE
Roy and Valentine argue that these should still be seen asTUE
pinnacles of English literature and their mix ofTUE
character, social upheaval, storytelling, melodrama,TUE
malign fate and high style demonstrate a commitment toTUE
portray the whole of life that is as relevant today as itTUE

From the Royal Albert Hall, London. Presented by MartinTUE

TUE
The Prom concludes with Thierry Fischer and the BBCTUE
National Orchestra of Wales performing music by SwissTUE
composer Heinz Holliger. (S)irato is an anguished lamentTUE
for Holliger's Hungarian teacher Sandor Veress, to whomTUE
the piece is dedicated. Fragments of Hungarian folk songsTUE
(collected by Bartok) revolve around a slowly evolvingTUE
mass of orchestral sound. There's even a part for thatTUE
most Hungarian of all instruments, the cimbalom.TUE
TUE
It is followed by Prokofiev's ballet score for Romeo andTUE

of Shakespeare's drama, and which was selected by theTUE

describes himself as 'very gloomy' about the effect of theTUE
current economic situation on the creative world and saysTUE
a lot more damage will be done to many more artisticTUE
companies by the recession.TUE
TUE
Advocating spending more money on the arts in time ofTUE
economic difficulty, he also reflects on the turbulentTUE
years he spent rebuilding the Royal Opera House over aTUE

examines the English philosopher John Locke's LetterWED

Written in 1689 at a time of Prostestant persecution,WED
Locke's work called for a new understanding of theWED
relationship between religion and the state. TristramWED
visits Holland - where Locke wrote the Letter in exile -WED
to hear about religious tolerance there and how itWED
compared with contemporary England. Many Huguenots hadWED
fled religious persecution in France and he also visitsWED
one of their churches in London - which now functions as aWED

Tennyson 200, The KrakenWED
Series in which contemporary British poets choose a singleWED
poem or extract by Tennyson and give a personal account ofWED
why it means so much to them.WED
WED
Welsh poet Gwyneth Lewis discusses Tennyson's poem TheWED
Kraken - a legendary sea-monster inhabiting the 'ancient,WED
dreamless, uninvaded sleep' of the unchartered ocean,WED
which, when ultimately it rises to the surface, isWED
destined to die. She finds surprising poetic inspirationWED
in this short, intense and unforgettable work.WED
WED
Lewis thought she had outgrown Tennyson around the timeWED
she did her O-levels. In fact, she was slightlyWED
embarrassed by her youthful rapture for what sheWED
considered his shallow Arthurian romances. Then, living onWED
a boat off a small Spanish town, she was unexpectedlyWED
re-introduced to the poet by a local swimming poolWED

Kit Wright is often thought of as a poet for children orFRI
of light verse, but in a celebration of one of Tennyson'sFRI
most poignant lyric poems, Tears, Idle Tears, he reflectsFRI
in a moving and scholarly way on the poet's ability toFRI
capture the very essence of the human condition. InFRI
defending the poem, he challenges the common notion thatFRI
Tennyson's gifts were no more than a supremely facileFRI
mastery of the English languageFRI
