Music of MexicoSUN
Charles Hazlewood with the BBC Concert Orchestra take up aSUN
Latin American theme as they explore the music of MexicoSUN
in the concert hall. As Latin American rhythms becameSUN
universally popular in the first half of the 20th century,SUN
and countries such as Mexico strove to reflect their ownSUN
voice on the world stage, so a new palette of musicalSUN
colours and ideas found their way onto the concertSUN
programme.SUN
SUN
Charles focuses on two works by Mexican born composers.SUN
Jose Pablo Moncayo's Huapango is a short orchestral pieceSUN
based on popular rural dances from his native country andSUN
has become his most often performed piece. SilvestreSUN
Revueltas' Sensemaya draws on the mythology of the ancientSUN
Mayan civilisation and is a symphonic poem infused withSUN
Latin American colours, but which also reflects theSUN
composer's interest and understanding of Western EuropeanSUN
music from the first half of the 20th century.SUN
SUN
There is also a nod towards Mexico from a North AmericanSUN
master, Aaron Copland. His El Salon Mexico came about as aSUN
result of a visit to Mexico during which he heard popularSUN
music in late night bars and cafes.SUN

There have been several recent, high-profile controversiesSUN
about artists' depictions of the child nude. In ourSUN
contemporary, western societies, it seems that pictures ofSUN
children scare us more than any other possible subject forSUN
art. But the child nude has been with us since antiquity,SUN
so is this predominantly a 21st-century obsession?SUN
SUN
Laura Cumming explores the history of the child nudeSUN
through a range of art works from antiquity to the presentSUN
day. Along the way, she consider works by Michelangelo,SUN
Caravaggio, Lewis Carroll, Balthus, Tierney Gearon and NanSUN
Goldin, amongst others.SUN
SUN
She examines what we can learn from these images about ourSUN
changing attitudes to childhood, to censorship and to art.SUN
How do we square our desire to protect children fromSUN
exploitation with our belief in freedom of expression?SUN

IlluminationSUN
SUN
Last broadcast on Sun, 31 May 2009, 23:00 on BBC Radio 3SUN
SUN
Poetry, prose and music on the theme of illumination, withSUN
readings by Sian Thomas and Jamie Glover. Including worksSUN
by Rimbaud, Jo Shapcott and Margaret Atwood withSUN
accompanying music by Thomas Ades, Arvo Part and Schubert.SUN
SUN
Producer's NotesSUN
SUN
From the Renaissance to the twenty-first centurySUN
illumination is something human beings have sought. It canSUN
herald the triumphant dawn of knowledge or ignite the fuseSUN
of imagination. Sian Thomas and Jamie Glover explore theSUN
theme of Illumination through poetry and prose from ArthurSUN
Rimbaud and Jo Shapcott to Margaret Atwood and DylanSUN
Thomas with music by the likes of Thomas Ades, Arvo PärtSUN
and Nick Cave.SUN
SUN
I wanted to take an impressionistic approach to theSUN
subject beginning with dawn and the rising sun. As morningSUN
comes, the world awakens and we begin to contemplate theSUN
light of love and beauty. Benjamin Britten's BeingSUN
Beauteous is itself a response to Arthur Rimbaud'sSUN
Illuminations - a collection which includes the poem thatSUN
opens the programme: Dawn.SUN
SUN
Light is commonly associated with religious knowledge andSUN
belief which we explore through traditional classicalSUN
music such as John Rutter's Hymn to the Creator of LightSUN
and more popular gospel music from the 'original soulSUN
sister', Rosetta Tharpe. But with light comes aSUN
metaphorical darkness: death, decay and the horror of warSUN
are brought to light in the poems of Dylan Thomas and TonySUN
Harrison.SUN
SUN
I chose Arvo Pärt's Tabula Rasa to close the programme asSUN
to me it seems to represent the illumination of knowledge:SUN
the piece takes a phrase and repeats it throughout theSUN
movement, becoming more elaborate until it builds with aSUN
crescendo at the end.SUN

Julian Joseph interviews the Portico Quartet, who areSUN
comprised of Jack Wylie (soprano saxophone), MiloSUN
Fitzpatrick (double bass), Nick Mulvey (Hang andSUN
percussion) and Duncan Bellamy (drums and Hang). TheirSUN
music's inimitable sound comes from the flyingSUN
saucer-shaped Hang, which evokes a type of etherealSUN
saxophone. It was Bellamy's chance purchase of the Hang atSUN
a music festival that inspired these young friends toSUN
start a band.SUN
SUN
And Belgian pianist Eric Legnini takes Julian through someSUN
of his writing. Legnini is one of the most talented youngSUN
pianists around, and after spending two years working inSUN
New York with American pianist Richie Beirach, he is nowSUN
performing and touring Europe with his own group. LegniniSUN
has played with leading musicians such as John Ruocco andSUN
Aldo Romano. He used to tour also with world famous TootsSUN
Thielemans but has now established himself as a standingSUN
headlining artist.SUN

Keats, titled Bright star, would I were stedfast as thouMON
art, which he wrote while he was with Brawne.MON

Writer Robert Macfarlane walks the length of the SouthMON

Walking the Hampshire miles of the South Downs, in monsoonMON
rain and sunshine, Robert reflects on the relationshipMON
between paths and stories, and how old paths were imaginedMON
in 19th-and early 20th-century England as ghostly spacesMON
of time-warp and spectres. He considers how paths might beMON
thought of as sculptures, a kind of democratic art form;MON
and he meets a man who has been on the road for sevenMON
