SAT SAT Related Links SAT SAT * The National Centre for Early Music, York SAT (www.ncem.co.uk) SAT SAT Purcell's Legacy SAT SAT Continuing this year’s Purcell anniversary celebrations, SAT and as part of a weekend on BBC Radio 3 marking the date SAT of his death (21 November 1695) Tom Service explores the SAT great composer’s legacy from the 17th century to the SAT present day. SAT SAT Tom starts the programme at Purcell’s grave at Westminster SAT Abbey, where he is joined by conductor and musicologist SAT Andrew Parrott to consider the composer’s reputation in SAT the immediate aftermath of his death, and his talent for SAT setting English text to music (which, according to SAT Parrott, was subsequently ’wrecked by Handel’). Parrott SAT also recalls his own discovery of Purcell whilst he was a SAT pupil of Michael Tippett. SAT SAT 20th Century Renaissance SAT SAT Purcell’s genius for English word-setting, and the fusion SAT of European influences in his music were two reasons for a SAT renaissance of his reputation in the 20th century. SAT Composers such as Michael Tippett and Benjamin Britten SAT paid homage to Purcell in their own work, making SAT arrangements of his songs and writing larger works such as SAT Britten’s Young Persons’ Guide to the Orchestra. SAT SAT To explore why Purcell was so important for both of these SAT composers Tom is joined by Nicholas Kenyon, Managing SAT Director of the Barbican Centre and early music historian, SAT and countertenor James Bowman, who sang Britten’s Purcell SAT arrangements with Britten at the piano. SAT SAT Living Composers SAT SAT The 100-year old American composer Elliott Carter talks SAT about his admiration for Purcell’s Fantasia on One Note, SAT which led to his setting of the piece for brass quintet. SAT Purcell’s Fantasias have also fascinated British composers SAT Harrison Birtwistle and Peter Maxwell Davies; they both SAT explain to Tom how Purcell’s music – its melancholy and SAT complex harmony – has inspired their own. SAT SAT Michael Nyman talks about his Purcell-inspired pieces, SAT from his score for the 1980s film The Draughtsman’s SAT Contract to the work he wrote for this year’s BBC Proms. SAT And Pete Townshend of The Who describes the revolutionary SAT influence for him of Purcell’s harmonic dissonances. SAT SAT Purcell for Dance and Children SAT SAT Choreographer Mark Morris talks to Tom about his use of SAT Purcell’s music for dance, and explains the direct SAT relationship between music and movement in his versions of SAT Dido and Aeneas, and King Arthur. SAT SAT And the programme ends at Dunnington Primary School in SAT Yorkshire, where an anniversary inspired project from the SAT National Centre for Early Music is helping children learn SAT about the music and times of Purcell. Project leader Cathy SAT Dew talks to Tom about the appeal of his music for SAT children. SUN SUN The focus of the recital is mainly on vocal music, which SUN for its sheer quantity and quality is significant. SUN Purcell's solo songs, once mainly used as token warm-up SUN numbers in recitals, are now being explored and relished SUN as never before, and his big dramatic works, full of songs SUN and ensemble numbers, are performed everywhere. SUN SUN But between those two extremes, there is a wealth of duets SUN and trios which are rarely performed today. These ensemble SUN songs by Purcell were once catalogued as chamber cantatas, SUN but in a pleasing symmetry with Purcell's sacred symphony SUN anthems, they are now referred to as symphony songs. SUN SUN Most of these symphony songs were found in a manuscript in SUN the composer's own hand - likely to have been compiled SUN between 1681 and 1690 - which also contains a number of SUN court odes. It is believed that they were originally SUN performed in the royal apartments at Whitehall Palace - SUN most likely by the King's Private Music - a specially SUN chosen group of favourite singers and instrumentalists.
