In the courtyard of the royal SAT palace, servant girls comment on the wild behavior of SAT Elektra, the eldest daughter of the late king Agamemnon. SAT SAT After they have left, Elektra appears, dressed in rags SAT (“Allein! Weh, ganz, allein”). She is obsessed with SAT thoughts of her father’s murder at the hands of her SAT mother, Klytämnestra, and her mother’s lover, Aegisth. SAT SAT Calling on her father’s spirit, she renews her vow of SAT vengeance. Her tirade is interrupted by her younger SAT sister, Chrysothemis, who urges Elektra to give up her SAT obsession with revenge so they both can lead normal lives. SAT SAT Elektra mocks Chrysothemis, who runs off as noises from SAT within the palace announce the approach of Klytämnestra. SAT SAT The queen staggers in. Drugs, loss of sleep, and fear of SAT retribution for her husband’s murder have made a wreck of SAT her (“Ich habe keine guten Nächte”). SAT SAT Surprised that Elektra will talk to her, she appeals to SAT her daughter’s intelligence and demands to know what she SAT needs to do to find peace of mind. SAT SAT A sacrifice has to be made, Elektra replies. When SAT Klytämnestra fails to comprehend what her daughter is SAT hinting at, Elektra screams at her that it is Klytämnestra SAT herself who must die and that she and her banished brother SAT Orest will kill her (“Was bluten muss?”). SAT SAT Klytämnestra is horrified, but when her confidante runs in SAT and whispers something, her mood changes abruptly. SAT Laughing maniacally, she disappears into the palace. SAT SAT Her behavior is explained when Chrysothemis reappears with SAT news that Orest is dead. SAT SAT Stunned, Elektra at first refuses to believe her, then SAT tells her sister that she must now help kill Klytämnestra SAT and Aegisth. Chrysothemis runs off in terror. As Elektra SAT frantically starts digging for the buried axe that killed SAT Agamemnon, a stranger appears. SAT SAT She asks him what he wants and he calmly replies that he SAT has been sent to bring news of Orest’s death (“Was willst SAT du, fremder Mensch?”). But when Elektra reveals that she SAT is Agamemnon’s daughter, he tells her Orest lives. SAT SAT Suddenly servants appear, kissing his hands and feet. SAT Frightened, Elektra asks who he is. The dogs in the SAT courtyard know me, the stranger replies, but not my own SAT sister? SAT SAT Crying his name, Elektra gives in to her unspeakable joy SAT and declares she has lived only to avenge their father’s SAT murder. When Orest’s guardian tells him the queen waits SAT inside, the men enter the palace. SAT SAT Elektra waits anxiously and when a scream is heard she SAT knows Orest has killed their mother. Aegisth arrives, SAT having heard the news of Orest’s death, and Elektra lights SAT his way into the palace with sarcastic courtesy. SAT SAT A moment later he reappears at a window, crying for help, SAT before he is dragged inside and killed. While tumultuous SAT confusion spreads through the palace and courtyard, SAT Elektra, in a state of ecstasy, begins a triumphal dance. SAT SAT Chrysothemis returns but Elektra doesn’t hear her and at SAT the climax of the dance falls dead. Carols appeared in Europe SUN thousands of years ago, but they weren't originally the SUN Christmas fare we know today. They were pagan songs for SUN the Winter Solstice and people would sing them as they SUN danced around stone circles. The word 'carol' suggests a SUN dance-song expressing praise or joy. Early Christians took SUN over the pagan solstice celebrations and so the link was SUN established between carols and Christmas. More often than SUN not Christmas carols were popular tunes to be performed in SUN gathering places or in the streets, only slowly did they SUN start to find there way into the church. SUN SUN Some of the melodies for today's popular carols are very SUN old, and through the course of this programme Catherine SUN draws on some of the original versions of the carols, for SUN songs such as Ding Dong Merrily On High and Good King SUN Wenceslas. She explores some of the ways in which early SUN composers have brought carols into the body of the church SUN service. SUN SUN 22:15 Words and Music b00pdclx (Listen) SUN At the Movies SUN SUN An edition of BBC Radio 3's weekly mixture of poetry, SUN prose and music inspired by the movies. SUN SUN Poets and composers have been associated with the cinema SUN since it began well over a hundred years ago. In the early SUN years, artists such the Russian poet Mayakovsky, Jean SUN Cocteau, WH Auden and Bertolt Brecht were all involved as SUN were composers William Walton, Erich Korngold, Max Steiner SUN and Elmer Bernstein. SUN SUN Poems include Tony Harrison's Continuous, George Szirtes's SUN In Memoriam Busby Berkeley, Carol Ann Duffy's Big Sue and SUN Now Voyager, ee cummings's your slightest look (heard in SUN Woody Allen's film Hannah and Her Sisters) and Roger SUN McGough's If Life's a Lousy Picture, Why Not Leave before SUN the End? SUN SUN Plus music by Michael Nyman, Mozart, Schumann, Bernard SUN Hermann, Aubert, Miles Davis, Nino Rota, Jerry Goldsmith SUN and Ennio Morricone. SUN SUN Producer note – At the Movies SUN SUN This week’s Words and Music takes a journey through the SUN history of cinema via the poetry and music inspired by the SUN movies. Poets and composers have been associated with the SUN cinema since the first film was made over a hundred years SUN ago. In those early years major writers like Jean Cocteau, SUN Mayakovsky, W.H. Auden and Bertolt Brecht were involved as SUN were the composers William Walton, Max Steiner, Elmer SUN Bernstein and Erich Korngold. And it’s not hard to see why SUN film and poetry work so well together – some even argue SUN that cinema narrative comes from classical poetry. Poets SUN like Michael Donaghy, August Kleinzahler, Liz Lochhead and SUN Frank O’Hara use brilliant cinematic images in their works SUN inspired by film. SUN SUN Inevitably, the lives of poets have frequently inspired SUN film makers too – Dylan Thomas, Sylvia Plath, Shelley and, SUN just this year, Keats in Jane Campion’s ‘Bright Star’. In SUN 1994 Philippe Noiret played the Chilean poet Pablo Neruda SUN in ‘Il Postino’ – in the programme you’ll hear a section SUN of the soundtrack alongside Neruda’s ‘Poetry’. SUN SUN Terence Davies is just one director who has used poetry SUN and music throughout his films as a way of exploring his SUN key themes of memory and reflection. And, of course, Woody SUN Allen has always used music as the soundtrack of New York SUN in films like ‘Annie Hall’ and ‘Manhattan’. In this SUN programme you’ll hear the poet ee cummings’ ‘Your SUN slightest look’ with Rodgers and Hart’s ‘You are too SUN beautiful’ from ‘Hannah and her Sisters’. SUN SUN And, of course, for lots of people their first SUN introduction to classical music comes from the movies. The SUN first time I heard ‘Soave sia il vento’ from Mozart’s SUN ‘Cosi Fan Tutte’ was in a school film club screening of SUN John Schlesinger’s ‘Sunday Bloody Sunday’ where it SUN illustrated perfectly his themes of beauty and infidelity. SUN SUN And you’ll hear some of the scores commissioned from the SUN great film composers like Bernstein, Bernard Herrmann, SUN Ennio Morricone and Max Steiner. In films like SUN ‘Chinatown’, ‘Vertigo’, ‘La Dolce Vita’ and ‘Now, Voyager’ SUN it’s impossible to separate the words and music – both are SUN vital to the films’ success. MON MON Music includes Debussy, Schumann, Butterworth, Prokofiev, MON Thomas Morley, Britten and Bernstein. MON MON Producer's Note MON MON I took the title for this programme about youth from Dylan MON Thomas’s poem Fern Hill: “As I was young and easy under MON the apple boughs …” You feel things more intensely when MON you’re young. I think that is why the subject has inspired MON so many writers and composers. MON MON I have loosely divided the programme into themes of youth MON and joy, youth and sorrow, youthful love, doomed youth, MON rebellious youth, deprived youth and finally, the MON transience of youth. I have concentrated on periods of MON history when youth has been important such as the late MON 18th and early 19th century. You could argue that the MON Romantics invented youth. Then a hundred years later when MON the First World War wiped out a generation of young men, MON youth became something to treasure. The last third of the MON programme mainly concentrates on the 20th century – the MON period between the wars when the bright young things – MON those who were lucky enough to be still alive – partied as MON if their lives depended on it. Then I have explored the MON 1950s, the birth of the angry young man, the emergence of MON gang culture and the arrival of flower power. Near the end MON I have returned to Wordsworth and his poem Tintern Abbey MON in which he comes to term with leaving behind the passion MON of youth and finds something deeper and more tranquil to MON replace it. I have ended on an elegiac note with Ernest MON Dowson’s poem Vitae Summa Brevis Spem Nos Vetat Incohare MON Longam which is a quotation from Horace meaning ‘The Brief MON Sum of Life Forbids us the Hope of Enduring Long.’ MON MON The music I have chosen is all youth-related. Some of it MON is on the subject of youth, such as Schumann’s Album fur MON de Jugend, Thomas Morley’s setting of Shakespeare’s song MON Oh Mistress Mine, Janice Ian’s At Seventeen, Debussy’s MON Girl with the Golden Hair and Gee Officer Krupke! from MON West Side Story. Other pieces of music I have included MON because they involve youthful performers, such as the MON violinist Chloe Hanslip and the Simon Bolivar Youth MON Orchestra of Venezuela. Finally I have also included music MON written when the composer was very young, such as Mozart’s MON Mitridate, written when he was only fourteen. TUE TUE Jeremy Northam and Harriet Walter read works by Keats, TUE Spenser, Shakespeare, Wilde, Carol Anne Duffy and Angela TUE Carter, alongside music by Handel, Massenet, Saint-Saens, TUE Richard Strauss, Bizet and Gershwin. TUE TUE Introduction TUE TUE I've always loved Keats' poem La Belle Dame Sans Merci and TUE it was my starting point for the programme. Who is this TUE supernatural beauty who drains the life of warriors and TUE kings and where does she come from? She is, of course, a TUE femme fatale - an archetype who figures in myth and TUE literature across all cultures and all ages. I looked up TUE the term in various dictionaries, here is the entry from TUE Chambers 21st century dictionary: “a woman with an TUE irresistible charm and fascination, often bringing those TUE who love her (usually men) into despair and disaster.” TUE TUE She was memorably incarnated by Glenn Close as the TUE bunny-boiler in Fatal Attraction and the popular TUE television series Desperate Housewives features a handful TUE of femmes fatales. One of my favourite recent examples TUE from popular culture is Xenia Onatopp from the James Bond TUE film Goldeneye who crushes men to death between her TUE thighs. Eve is one of the earliest examples of the type, TUE and one of the deadliest, as she is not only responsible TUE for Adam's personal downfall but for the fall of man. TUE TUE The first femmes fatales. TUE TUE In Hebrew mythology she appears as Lilith, Adam's first TUE wife who refused to adopt the missionary position during TUE sex and ended up giving birth to all the demons in the TUE world. In Sumerian myth she is Inanna, who attracts men TUE and then cruelly rejects them. In Ancient Greece she is TUE Pandora, who opens the forbidden box and releases all the TUE evils of mankind. In Homer's The Odyssey she is embodied TUE in the character of Circe who turns men into pigs. TUE TUE It was difficult to decide which women to include in my TUE programme, and there are many notable deadly ladies I TUE didn’t have room for. I hope they won’t wreak vengeance on TUE me. The programme starts with the Eqyptian Queen Cleopatra TUE described by Enobarbus in his famous speech from TUE Shakespeare’s Anthony and Cleopatra. I have used music TUE from Samuel Barber’s 1965 opera of the same name to TUE underscore the speech. TUE TUE Serpent Women TUE TUE Anthony refers to the Egyptian queen as “my serpent of old TUE Nile”. Cleopatra has a perfectly formed body, but very TUE often the femme fatale is in possession of a serpent’s TUE body or a fish’s tail. I have used various examples of the TUE serpent-woman including Keats’s Lamia, Rusalka - the TUE mermaid in Dvorak’s opera, the Lorelei in an appealing TUE song by Gershwin and Duessa, the ‘loathly lady’ in Book 1 TUE of Spenser’s The Fairy Queen. TUE TUE Manon TUE TUE One of the most popular works of fiction of the 18th TUE century was Abbé Prévost's Manon Lescaut. His story of the TUE beautiful, fragile, but amoral Manon inspired no less than TUE 4 operas and several ballets. I have used music by TUE Massenet, not from his opera Manon Lascaut, but from the TUE overture to Kenneth Macmillan’s ballet Manon. The score of TUE the ballet is drawn from many different works by Massenet, TUE although, oddly enough, not one of them is taken from his TUE opera about Manon. I have also used a piece from TUE Massenet’s opera Cléopâtre. TUE TUE The character of Manon was the inspiration for Prosper TUE Merimee’s Carmen, one of the most well-known femmes TUE fatales. In celebration of her I have included a version TUE of The Habanera arranged for the violin and played by the TUE virtuoso Anne-Sophie Mutter. The writing of the fin de TUE siècle is seething with femmes fatales and I have used an TUE extract from Oscar Wilde’s Salome together with the Dance TUE of the Seven Veils from Richard Strauss’s opera of the TUE same name. TUE TUE Vamps TUE TUE In the 20th century the femme fatale was re-invented as TUE the vamp by the silent screen star Theda Bara whose TUE fabricated name was actually an anagram of ‘Arab Death’, TUE hinting at another essential characteristic of the femme TUE fatale - her exoticism. The man-eating vamp became an TUE essential part of the genre of film noir in the 1940s and TUE 50s and was notably portrayed by such actresses as Mary TUE Astor, Veronica Lake, Barbara Stanwyck and Joan Bennett. TUE My programme concentrates on the vamp in literature and TUE music, but I have given a nod to film by including Jackie TUE Kay’s poem The Life and Death of Bette Davis. TUE TUE The femme fatale, unsurprisingly, is a male construction TUE and until the 20th century nearly all the literary TUE depictions of her are by men. However, I have given her TUE the opportunity to answer back in poems by Carol Ann TUE Duffy, Jackie Kay, Linda Pastan and Suzanne Lummis. TUE TUE In addition to the music already mentioned I have used TUE music by Handel, Philip Glass, Shostakovich, Saint-Saëns TUE and Dowland. TUE TUE Naturally, I have given the femme fatale herself the last TUE word in an extract from Angela Carter’s short story about TUE a female vampire ‘The Lady of the House of Love’. WED WED 17:00 Words and Music b00kl0fq (Listen) WED Do Not Go Gentle WED WED Barbara Jefford and Neville Jason explore the adventure of WED entering our 'third age', and the challenges and WED consolations of old age. With readings from Shakespeare, WED Yeats, Browning, Dylan Thomas, Roger McGough and Dannie WED Abse, and music including Mozart, Schubert, Chopin, WED Scarlatti, Villa-Lobos, John Taverner, Leiber & Stoller, WED Jerome Kern, and The Beatles. WED WED PRODUCER'S NOTE WED WED When I approached Barbara Jefford and Neville Jason to do WED the readings for my programme on the theme of old age I WED discovered that the last time they worked together was WED half a century ago when they played the twins Sebastian WED and Viola in Twelfth Night at the Old Vic and were only WED just starting out on their careers. At the start of WED Shakespeare’s play the twins are separated by a terrible WED storm and each thinks the other drowned. It takes the two WED and a half hours of Shakespeare’s drama to re-unite the WED pair and bring about the happy ending. It seemed a happy WED coincidence that this programme on age should reunite the WED pair in real life, fifty years on and both at the top of WED their game. WED WED In choosing old age as the theme of this programme I did WED not want to concentrate on the cruelties of ageing, but WED instead to celebrate it as a time when musicians and WED writers are at the peak of their talents. The programme WED starts with Mieczyslaw Horszowski playing Mozart at the WED Wigmore Hall three weeks before his 99th birthday, WED recorded live. During the programme you will hear WED Rostropovich playing for the Queen’s Jubilee in the Prom WED at the Palace in 2002 when he was 75, the 78 year old WED Vladimir Horowitz playing Chopin, and the legendary jazz WED bassist Milt Hinton, aged 85. There is also music from WED Elliott Carter’s Boston Concerto, written when he was 94, WED and from John Tavener’s Requiem, composed last year when WED he was 64 – a mere stripling compared to Horszowksi. WED WED I took the title for the programme from Dylan Thomas’ WED ferocious villanelle Do Not Go Gentle Into That Good WED Night. I have included several comic poems, including one WED of my favourite of Robert Browning’s dramatic monologues, WED The Bishop Orders His Tomb at St Praxed’s Church. Barbara WED Jefford also performs an extract from Congreve’s The Way WED of the World in which Lady Wishfort attempts to cover up WED the cracks in her face sufficiently well to seduce a WED gentleman caller. There are also darker-toned poems from WED authors such as Sylvia Plath, W.B. Yeats and Thomas Hardy, WED but I have chosen to end on an extract from East Coker in WED which I think T.S. Eliot has managed to combine an WED understanding of the loss and sadness of old age with the WED sense that it might also be an adventure. FRI FRI 17:00 Words and Music b00fr76s (Listen) FRI Winter FRI FRI This week’s Words and Music is devoted to the season Emily FRI Dickinson described as the time when the sky is low and FRI the clouds are mean: winter. Winter in the countryside is FRI celebrated in Wordsworth’s ‘The Prelude’ when, as a child, FRI he and his friends skated along the ice, flying through FRI the cold in the darkness. With this you’ll hear Peter FRI Maxwell Davies’ ‘At the lochan’ from his ‘Seven Songs FRI Home’, the series of songs which tell the story of FRI children in the Orkneys making their way home from school FRI on a winter’s afternoon. Mark Doty’s walk with his dogs as FRI the sun sets is heard alongside the Finnish composer FRI Rautavaara’s concerto for birds and orchestra, ‘Cantus FRI Arcticus’. The memory of winter past is heard in David FRI Hartnett’s ‘Two winters’ in which a man, now a parent FRI himself, remembers his father shovelling snow outside his FRI childhood home, a time in which he dreamed that the snow FRI fell for years ‘and the ray of stars like birds’ feet FRI flecked the white’. Winters in California and Tangiers are FRI evoked by the poets Karl Shapiro and Sarah Maguire – in FRI one the pink camellias line the paths, in the other FRI ‘hibiscus blooms burn, scarlet, cerise, tangerine’. The FRI programme ends with Robert Frost’s ‘Stopping by woods on a FRI snowy evening’ and Wayne Barlow’s rhapsody for oboe and FRI strings inspired by Appalachian folk songs, ‘Winter’s FRI Passed’.
