In the 200th year since SAT Schumann's birth, this feature looks behind the music. SAT Schumann turned to the novels of Jean Paul and ETA Hoffmann SAT to access a fantasy world of dual personalities, the SAT ordinary becoming extraordinary, humour and irony. This SAT inspired him to write some of his most idiosyncratic and SAT ground-breaking piano works. SAT SAT Lucy Parham is a well known Schumann interpreter and SAT artistic director of Schumann festivals. She reveals how SAT literary links have shed new light on her interpretation. SAT Visiting Schumann's birthplace in Zwickau, Lucy looks at SAT Schumann's extraordinary collection of books, immaculately SAT preserved, including a novel by Jean Paul, Flegeljahre, with SAT annotations by the composer. A description of a masked ball SAT from this book became Papillons. Also in the collection, she SAT discovers Shakespeare's Macbeth and looks at a score with a SAT quotation from Macbeth in Schumann's hand. As the director SAT of the museum Thomas Synofzik explains, Schumann could never SAT have written music without literature and he might well have SAT become a writer. Lucy plays Schumann's music in the museum, SAT on a piano from 1860 played by Clara Schumann and belonging SAT to the Wieck family, and talks about how her intepretation SAT has deepened. The feature includes insights into German SAT literature from academics Ricarda Schmidt and Erika Reiman SAT and the writer Laura Tunbridge. It tells the story of the SAT life of a Vixen from the moment she is adopted as a pet by SAT the Forester to the moment she is shot by the Poacher. SAT Inbetween times she's briefly a suffragette, marries and SAT produces countless children. We meet her woodland friends SAT and enemies - and their lives are contrasted with the human SAT characters who live nearby, among them a lonely priest, an SAT elderly schoolmaster and an overworked innkeeper. But the SAT magic of Janacek's score is in the way he portrays all of SAT these lives with his most colourful and deftly woven music, SAT sometimes spiky, sometimes intensely lyrical. Amazingly, the SAT recent performances at the Royal Opera House were the first SAT time the great Janacek interpreter Sir Charles Mackerras had SAT conducted the opera there. SUN SUN Composed in 1840, "The Poet's Love" is arguably Schumann's SUN best-known song-cycle. The very natural, almost SUN hyper-sensitive poetical affections of the poems are SUN beautifully mirrored in Schumann's settings, with their SUN miniaturist chromaticism and suspensions. SUN SUN 21:30 Sunday Feature b00skbfg (Listen) SUN The First English Opera SUN SUN First performed under Cromwell in 1656 when the theatres SUN were still officially closed, The Siege of Rhodes bewitched SUN the ears of the great diarist Samuel Pepys and remains one SUN of the most important works in the history of both English SUN literature and music. And yet - like its creator, the SUN noseless poet laureate Sir William Davenant - it is almost SUN totally forgotten today. SUN SUN Why is this seminal work, the first opera in English to be SUN performed publicly, now so largely ignored? No doubt it's SUN partly because the music - which the enchanted Pepys SUN desperately tried to obtain for himself in the early 1660s - SUN is lost, but the reasons for its neglect are more SUN complicated than that. SUN SUN As we discover from a variety of contributors, the neglected SUN Davenant was actually one of the most innovative forces in SUN the history of English theatre - not only did he "invent" SUN English opera, he was also very instrumental in the creation SUN of the idea of Shakespeare the National Poet and claimed to SUN be spiritually and perhaps even biologically the "Son of SUN Shakespeare". SUN SUN Travelling from Cromwell's House in Ely via Pepys' Library SUN in Cambridge and Shakespeare's Globe to the site of the old SUN Cockpit Theatre in London where the Siege was performed, SUN presenter Claire van Kampen traces the complicated genesis SUN and afterlife of this lost operatic treasure. The programme SUN follows the royalist Davenant's extraordinary travails in SUN the Civil War and afterwards, uncovering the shady political SUN machinations that led to Davenant being granted permission SUN to stage the first English opera while all other dramatic SUN activities remained strictly forbidden, and culminates in an SUN attempt - the first in around 350 years - to reimagine what SUN the music that so obsessed Pepys might actually have sounded SUN like. SUN SUN 22:15 Words and Music b00skbfj (Listen) SUN Man Made SUN SUN Machines, in their various forms, now seem to rule every SUN aspect of our lives. They affect the way we work, the way we SUN communicate and travel, even the way we love. As D.H. SUN Lawrence suggests in this programme’s opening poem, what we SUN humans created now holds power over us. Lawrence’s words are SUN underlined by the sinister Russian futurism of Mosolov’s SUN Factory: Machine music, also known as the Iron Foundry. So SUN who better to define what exactly a machine is than the SUN father of the philosophy that spawned Mosolov’s music: Karl Marx. SUN SUN Charles Dickens transports us to the industrial revolution SUN in Northern England with his fictional Coketown, and Sergei SUN Prokofiev’s ballet The Steel Step echoes the clanking gears SUN and motors of Mosolov, while the hypnotic electronic sounds SUN of Terry Riley’s A Rainbow in Curved Air shift this sound SUN world into the 1970s. Mechanical advancements in travel are SUN celebrated by the Beach Boys ode to the automobile Fun Fun SUN Fun, and Arthur Honegger’s tribute to the grand steam SUN locomotive Pacific 231. SUN SUN Ella Wheeler Wilcox’s poem The Engine imbues the steam SUN locomotive with its own personality, while Rudyard Kipling’s SUN The Secret of the Machines goes further and gives the SUN machinery its own voice. The voice of the machine can be SUN heard in Icelandic composer Jóhann Jóhannsson’s ibm 1403 – SUN Printer. Jóhannsson’s score is arranged around the music SUN created by one of the earliest computers, and throughout, SUN the sound of an anonymous operative can be heard reciting SUN instructions for the computer’s maintenance: a reminder of SUN how far technology has advanced, in under 40 years. SUN SUN But how far will technology advance? After Carl Sandburg’s SUN talking telephone line, the Penguin Café Orchestra’s singing SUN telephone receiver, and Leroy Anderson’s dancing typewriter, SUN we’re hurled into the future as envisaged by Philip K. Dick SUN in his story Do Androids Dream of Electric Sheep? (famously SUN filmed as Blade Runner). The story’s protagonist SUN investigates an opera singer who he believes to be an SUN android. She makes a better job of covering up her true SUN identity than Olympia the doll, who continually breaks down SUN as she sings her aria from Offenbach’s Tales of Hoffman. SUN SUN TONTO (The Original New Timbral Orchestra) was an early SUN synthesiser famously employed by Stevie Wonder. Here it’s SUN heard recreating the sound of a camel train plodding across SUN the desert. Then, as the rotor blades of a helicopter SUN entwine with the strings of the Arditti Quartet in SUN Stockhausen’s work, Philip Larkin recounts the shock of SUN finding a mauled hedgehog in the blades of his lawnmower. As SUN another early electronic instrument, the theremin, plays The SUN Swan, there’s time for reflection on the impact machinery SUN has on nature. A rat, a mole, a toad and a horse encounter a SUN car in The Wind in the Willows, and Birdsong and the SUN electronic Ondes Martenot combine in Messiaen’s Turangalîla SUN Symphony. The final word belongs to D.H. Lawrence again, as SUN he surveys the potentially devastating clash of machinery SUN and nature in The Triumph of the Machine. The poem brings to SUN mind the cries of the Rhine Maidens at the end of Wagner’s SUN Das Rheingold: a suitably epic place to finish. In this 350th year since the composer's MON birth, Donald Macleod surveys his life and music. Although MON from humble beginnings, Scarlatti rose to claim the MON patronage of princes, queens and cardinals. Knighted by the MON Pope, he also joined the elite Arcadian Academy with MON prominence over other composers such as Corelli. Largely MON overshadowed in recent years by his son Domenico, Alessandro MON once held prominence on an international stage. Not only did MON he claim to have composed 114 operas, but it is believed he MON composed over 700 cantatas, nearly 40 oratorios, along with MON many instrumental works. Donald Macleod appraises the legacy MON of Alessandro Scarlatti, and questions whether we should MON re-evaluate his importance. MON MON Donald Macleod surveys the life and music of Alessandro MON Scarlatti, with a look at the composer's early years. Little MON is known about Scarlatti's life in Palermo, but his family MON moved to Rome when he was about 12. Married at the age of MON 18, Alessandro started to make a name for himself early on. MON Initially employed by the church to conduct choirs, we'll MON hear an example of his choral writing, his Nisi Dominus. MON MON Alessandro soon realised that it was the world of opera MON which he wished to pursue. This attracted powerful patrons, MON including a number of cardinals. He soon became the maestro MON di cappella to Queen Christina of Sweden, and we'll hear an MON aria from his early opera L'honesta negli amori, which he MON dedicated to her. He MON was hooked at the age of four. It's given him plenty of time MON to fathom what it is that makes this theatrical form impinge MON so powerfully. He argues that while it might seem grand, MON flamboyant, passionate and overtly emotional, when you look MON more closely it's the intimacy of it that counts. The aria, MON and Tom believes these are at its core, is a confessional MON form. It might be launched into a huge auditorium with MON gut-busting zeal and massive vocal projection, but what it MON does is to open the character's emotions up to the audience MON by way of the music. The music, the singing, is everything, MON and it's why the aria, which Tom believes is opera's version MON of the cinematic close-up, is so important. MON MON There are plenty of other elements that contribute. MON Relevance in setting and substance can be too slavishly MON observed but they matter as well. Laced with his MON recollections of the good and the bad in his many years as a MON critic, Tom makes the case for opera by going beyond the MON usual cliche's and enthusiasms for grandeur and beauty. A classically TUE trained singer, he reflects on the way opera has changed the TUE lives of people he's met during the past ten years. TUE TUE Whilst Matt certainly doesn't claim that Streetwise has TUE solved the problems of homelessness, he speaks with passion TUE about how opera is for everyone. He argues that the teamwork TUE necessary in opera is a perfect way of engaging the 600 TUE homeless people around the UK who undertake the weekly opera TUE projects. If you can't sing a solo, you can join in the TUE chorus. If you don't want to sing, you can make props or TUE help with costumes. The massive scale of an opera means TUE that, for his team, there's a role for everyone and a reason TUE to turn up every week. TUE TUE Over the years, his opera company have received warm reviews TUE for their performances. And the somewhat surprising success TUE of using opera as a means of support and rehabilitation of TUE homeless people is now being tried in other countries. TUE TUE Producer: Sarah Taylor. WED WED With late payments from the Royal Chapel in Naples, WED Alessandro Scarlatti soon realised he'd need to relocate in WED order to survive. Donald Macleod follows Scarlatti's return WED to Rome via Florence, but not before King Philip V of WED Spain's visit to Naples. Scarlatti, along with other WED composers such as Corelli, was required to compose music for WED this important occasion. We'll hear the Sinfonia from WED Scarlatti's serenata Clori, Dorino e Amore, which captivated WED the Spanish King. WED WED Once back in Rome, Scarlatti was soon tied down WED contractually to a number of churches. This was not the sort WED of work that he wanted to do, and he began to receive WED complaints for neglecting his duties. Opera however was WED banned during this period in Rome. Papal opposition to WED theatrical activity meant that the most important artistic WED event in the calendar was the oratorios for Lent. To end the WED programme we'll hear the second half of Scarlatti's Oratorio WED per la Passione di Nostro Signore Gesù Cristo. This oratorio WED is considered to be one of his best in this field, maybe WED even a rival to Handel's La Resurrezione. However the old love which WED he lavished on it in his youth and as a young critic has WED gone. WED WED He talks about the demons that have nagged at him over the WED years, the sheer opulence of the operatic world, the claims WED of broad appeal which he believes are false, the WED disproportionate funding, the excuses for modernity and WED above all the festival audiences who are there unashamedly WED for the event rather than the performance. FRI FRI 12:00 Composer of the Week b00skc82 (Listen) FRI Alessandro Scarlatti (1660-1725), Episode 5 FRI FRI In our final programme on Alessandro Scarlatti, Donald FRI Macleod surveys the composer's decline into poverty, and FRI evaluates his reputation as the founder of Neapolitan Opera. FRI FRI Donald Macleod surveys Alessandro Scarlatti's final years FRI and his reputation as the founder of Neapolitan Opera. FRI During this time a new movement was beginning in the world FRI of opera: opera buffa. We'll hear Scarlatti's own attempt at FRI the new style, with an aria from Il Trionfo dell'Onore. FRI FRI Towards the end of his life, Scarlatti also taught more FRI pupils out of financial necessity. During one of these FRI lessons he stated that he'd never liked wind instruments, FRI because they never stay in tune. Despite that, Alessandro FRI did compose a number of works for wind instruments, and FRI we'll hear his Concerto in F major for 3 Flutes. FRI FRI Scarlatti's greatest love may have been opera, but he was FRI mainly employed as the maestro di cappella to a number of FRI royal courts and churches and made a significant impact upon FRI the world of oratorio, cantatas, and sacred music. To end FRI this final episode we'll hear the latter part of his Mass FRI for St Cecilia's Day, composed five years before his death FRI for one of his Roman patrons. FRI FRI The symphonic ballad The Voyevoda is one of Tchaikovsky's FRI least-known works, perhaps because the composer himself FRI tended to under-rate it. But in the Pathétique Symphony, he FRI threw his all into this no-holds-barred musical FRI autobiography; the result is a symphony that blends raw FRI emotion and glorious melody to devastating effect. But it's an unofficial title that has come at a cost. FRI While Germany is full of opera houses with permanent FRI ensembles where singers can get to know each other and work FRI together on a series of different productions, Michael is a FRI permanent guest. He's had to get used to living out of a FRI suitcase, settling in to a lodging house or hotel room for a FRI month and bonding with a new cast, a new director and new FRI conductor, only to be off and away the moment the production FRI is up and running. FRI These are the confessions of the long distance opera singer. FRI FRI The benefits have been a chance to see the world's stages FRI and work with some of the greats. The down-side is that the FRI whole business of teamwork, of developing together, of FRI celebrating together is very limited. FRI And of course there's the family. The pull between work and FRI home is constant and doesn't get any easier over time. FRI FRI 23:15 World on 3 b00sllvv (Listen) FRI Lopa Kothari with new releases from across the globe, plus a FRI studio session with Paris-based singer-songwriter Hindi FRI Zahra. FRI FRI Born in Morocco, Hindi Zahra writes songs which reflect the FRI many styles of music she heard as a child - her Berber FRI heritage, the Algerian 'chabi' of Cheikha Rimitti, music of FRI the desert bluesmen of the Sahara, the soulful singing of FRI Aretha Franklin, and the gypsy jazz of Django Reinhardt. She FRI moved to Paris as a young girl, got a job at the Louvre, and FRI began writing gentle, artful songs, last year delighting the FRI audience with her performance on BBC Radio 3's stage at FRI WOMAD.
