Johnson's 1969 novel in which a sports SUN journalist travels to a strange city to cover a football SUN match, only to discover it was the city where he first met SUN his friend Tony who has died young of cancer. We follow the SUN journalist from his arrival at the train station, through SUN lunch, to the match and on the journey home, as different SUN memories of his friend are triggered. SUN SUN Originally published in 27 unbound pamphlets in a box, The SUN Unfortunates was intended to be read in a random order. The SUN lack of a fixed order is suggestive of the way memories SUN occur, and the book becomes a meditation not just on SUN friendship and loss, but also on the nature of memory and SUN writing as our hero struggles to recall everything in order SUN to 'get it all down' as he promised his dying friend. SUN SUN B.S. Johnson is not a household name, but his novels are SUN beloved by a growing number of people who have discovered SUN him and he has something of a cult status. Renewed interest SUN in B.S. Johnson came partly from the publication of Jonathan SUN Coe's celebrated biography of Johnson, Like a Fiery SUN Elephant. SUN SUN 21:30 Sunday Feature b00v7sjy (Listen) SUN Harvesting the Archive SUN SUN In this literary celebration of the work of a great writer SUN and thinker, we evaluate John Berger's recent donation of SUN his archive to the British library and ponder the meaning of SUN archives. John Berger characteristically didn't want to SUN consider any kind of "mercantile" approach to the archiving SUN of his writings. So he donated them to the British Library. SUN In this public institution, he hopes the reader will enter SUN "the company of the past" as they open any one of the 80 SUN boxes of his materials. The reader will come across SUN countless letters because Berger was a keen letter writer as SUN well as a creative collaborator. For Berger the words of SUN others in his archive are perhaps more important than his SUN own words. But for the young cataloguer who has recently SUN been chosen to work through the material and write about it, SUN it is a chance to re-evaluate a writer and see the archive SUN as a work of art in itself - in effect to publish it for the SUN public. SUN SUN For the curator of modern literary manuscripts, Jamie SUN Andrews, this acquisition is particularly special because he SUN loves Berger's writing and because Berger invited him to his SUN farm on the Franco-Swiss border. This was part of a very SUN Berger-esque deal: Jamie got the archive but he had to come SUN and help pack it up and also help the villagers with the SUN haymaking because it was harvest time. Keen to share the SUN adventure and the role of the library with the public, Jamie SUN Andrews used new "audioboo" software to upload his SUN commentaries. SUN SUN We also hear from Berger expert and writer Geoff Dyer and SUN from composer Gavin Bryars who wrote music for Berger's SUN series of letters about art and colour "I Send You This SUN Cadmium Red" (broadcast in Radio 3's Between the Ears series). SUN SUN Harvesting the Archive is presented and produced by Judith SUN Kampfner. SUN Sound design by Jon Calver. SUN SUN 22:15 Words and Music b00qzv9f (Listen) SUN Scotland SUN SUN This week's Words and Music explores the history of Scotland SUN through its landscape and people: the shipyards on the SUN Clyde, rural life in the farming communities of the north SUN east, the tenements of Edinburgh and life in the Orkneys and SUN on the Isle of Skye. You’ll hear about the hardship of life SUN on the land in ‘Sunset Song’, Lewis Grassic Gibbon’s 1930s SUN novel set in the north east of Scotland which explores SUN Scottish identity and tells the story of the death of a way SUN of life in Scotland after the First World War. And in SUN Edinburgh at around the same time Miss Jean Brodie was SUN celebrating her prime by flirting with fascism and teaching SUN ‘the crème de la crème’. A passage from the novel is heard SUN with Max Bruch’s ‘Scottish Fantasy’ – although the composer SUN never visited Scotland the piece is inspired by Scottish SUN folk melodies. SUN SUN The poet Edwin Muir was born in 1887, the youngest child of SUN tenant farmers in the Orkney Islands. In ‘Scotland 1941’ he SUN wrote: SUN SUN ‘Now smoke and dearth and money everywhere, SUN Mean heirlooms of each fainter generation, SUN And mummied housegods in their musty niches, SUN Burns and Scot, sham bards of a sham nation...’ SUN SUN In the poem he harks back to an earlier age, the Scotland of SUN Wallace and Bruce and a feeling of family and tribalism SUN before the influence of John Knox and the Calvinist SUN reformers. The composer James MacMillan called it ‘a SUN cleansing hard poem for us Scots to take’ and dedicated his SUN ‘Cumnock Fair’ to the poet – in the programme you’ll hear SUN ‘Shamnation’. Muir’s earlier age is heard in Robert Burns’ SUN ‘A Red, Red Rose’ sung by Jean Redpath. And life in the SUN Orkneys is heard in George MacKay Brown’s ‘Island School’ SUN and Peter Maxwell Davies’ ‘Home’ from ‘Seven Songs Home’ SUN which follows the path of a child on the island heading home SUN after school. A member of the MON influential group, Les Six, these days Milhaud's rather MON unfairly known through just a handful of works. In fact, as MON this week of his music demonstrates, he was a prolific MON composer who wrote in every imaginable style for every MON conceivable combination of instruments. At the time of his MON death, aged 81, in 1974, his catalogue contained over 440 MON works. MON MON One of the more fascinating aspects of Milhaud is how the MON veritable cocktail of musical genres he engaged with mirror MON his experiences in life. His Provençale childhood gave him a MON love of the landscape of Southern France and a pride in his MON ancient Jewish ancestry. A lifelong attachment to literature MON which began with the symbolist poets of his youth also found MON musical expression. A great admiration for the music of MON Debussy and a strong dislike of Wagner, juxtaposes with his MON interests in the avant garde movement and jazz clubs of MON 1920s Paris. A sojourn in Brazil during the first world war MON introduced the rhythms of Latin America, while a later spell MON in America encouraged a series of symphonies and chamber MON works. MON MON We begin the week with works that reflect this relationship MON with the Provençale landscape and his religious roots, MON including a song from his Poèmes juifs collection, settings MON of eight anonymous Jewish poems, a movement from his first MON string quartet, which he dedicated to the Aix-en-Provence MON born painter Cézanne, and his colourful tapestry of the MON sunlit colours of the region, Suite Provençale. He THU also looks at the challenge architecture faces in creating THU zero-carbon buildings, and asks - in an age where THU air-conditioning and central heating are the norm, are we THU ready to make the changes to our buildings that will combat THU Climate Change, and so ensure the future of the World? After spending the war years in FRI America, the Milhauds returned to Paris and subsequently FRI divided their time between the two continents. FRI FRI Milhaud defined himself as both a Frenchman from Provence FRI and a Jew. FRI FRI The Psalms of David reflect his attachment to his faith FRI while compositions like the Stanford Serenade which he wrote FRI in 1969 fill the air with Mediterranean colour. FRI FRI The story was discovered among the author's unpublished FRI papers in Monaco after his death in November 1993. Written FRI in the early 1960s and partly inspired by T.S. Eliot's FRI Aristophanic melodrama, Sweeney Agonistes, Burgess's story FRI is about two middle-aged women and their ill-fated FRI experiments with Tarot cards. FRI FRI Burgess himself was fascinated by the idea of cartomancy (or FRI predicting the future with cards). He designed his own set FRI of Tarot cards for domestic use, and, when working as a FRI schoolmaster in Oxfordshire in the 1950s, he disguised FRI himself as 'Professor Sosostris the famous clairvoyant' and FRI told fortunes at a village fete. FRI FRI Although he is best known for his full-length novels such as FRI A Clockwork Orange, Earthly Powers and Inside Mr Enderby, FRI Anthony Burgess was frequently attracted to the short story FRI form. He wrote more than 40 short stories throughout his FRI literary career. A volume of his Collected Short Stories, FRI edited by Andrew Biswell who has written a biography of FRI Burgess, is due for publication in 2013. The FRI way we build reflects society's values and aspirations - but FRI also its fears. Sunand Prasad takes us on a journey through FRI Architecture, from the India he grew up in, to the Utopian FRI vision of Le Corbusier, from the concrete carbuncles of FRI Post-War Britain, to the design that will combat Climate Change. FRI FRI In this fifth and final programme, he tells the story of the FRI Battle of Covent Garden - how one man took on the planners FRI to stop the wholesale demolition of a part of Britain's FRI past. Sunand argues that all of us have the power to shape FRI planning. We can all make our voices heard to ensure good FRI decision-making and good design. Above all, he calls for a FRI fundamental reconnection between us and our shelter - and FRI for future generations to be educated in the value of FRI Architecture, the Fourth R. FRI FRI 23:15 World on 3 b00v7ybv (Listen) FRI Lopa Kothari with sounds from around the world and an FRI exclusive studio session by The Reverend Payton's Big Damn FRI Band. Led by Josh "The Reverend" Peyton, this family affair FRI from Brown County Indiana have become a touring sensation in FRI the States and have just released a new album "Wages", which FRI covers everything from unrequited love, to murder and FRI crystal meth abuse. Producer James Parkin. FRI FRI Josh "The Reverend" Peyton was born April 12, 1981, FRI Eagletown, Indiana. At age 12, Rev Peyton's father gave him FRI a Kay brand guitar sending Peyton off on an exploration of FRI the blues of BB King and Muddy Waters. Further exploration FRI led to a desire to learn the finger-picking style of artists FRI like Charlie Patton. At the time Peyton was unable to master FRI it. Peyton played a party following his high school FRI graduation, and the next morning suffered excruciating pain FRI in his hands. At that point, he gave up music and spent a FRI year working as the desk clerk in a hotel. Eventually an FRI operation removed a mass of scar tissue. While recovering FRI from surgery, Rev Peyton met (and later married) Breezy. FRI When the bandages were removed, Peyton discovered a new FRI flexibility in his fretting hand that enabled him to play in FRI the "finger" style that had long eluded him. Breezy bought a FRI washboard, and started writing songs with Rev Peyton and FRI Jayme Peyton. Since that time, The Big Damn Band has been FRI touring the United States, and blues festivals in Italy and FRI Switzerland, pausing only to record their CD "Big Damn FRI Nation". In June 2008, they signed with Los Angeles-based FRI SideOneDummy Records. They released "The Whole Fam Damily" FRI and it entered the Billboard Blues Chart at #4. Their album, FRI The Wages, was released on May 25, 2010 and entered the FRI Billboard Blues Album chart at #2. FRI
