SAT SAT Harry's Boston Concerto SAT SAT Born in Accrington, Lancashire in 1934 his musical career SAT began with clarinet and composition studies at the Royal SAT Manchester College of Music where his contemporaries SAT included Peter Maxwell Davies and Alexander Goehr. In 1965 SAT having travelled to Princeton as a Harkness Fellow he SAT completed the opera Punch and Judy which firmly established SAT his reputation as a leading voice in British music. SAT SAT His latest work is a Violin Concerto - the first piece he SAT has ever called 'concerto', and his first for solo string SAT instrument and orchestra. Earlier this month it received its SAT premiere in Boston with soloist Christian Tetzlaff and the SAT Boston Symphony Orchestra. SAT SAT Tom meets Sir Harrison or Harry as he’s better known at his SAT home – a converted silk factory in a Wiltshire village, SAT complete with composition hut and fastidiously beautiful SAT garden – where they discuss the composer’s whole creative SAT life, which began as a clarinettist for variety shows and SAT comedians in Lancashire. SAT SAT And a fortnight later they meet again at rehearsals at SAT Boston’s Symphony Hall where Harry talks candidly about what SAT drives his music and his hopes for the concerto. As the SAT orchestra and soloist get to grips with the work and SAT ultimately deliver its thrilling first performance, we SAT experience the process of Birtwistle’s ideas being realised SAT in sound. SAT SAT Taking a bow SAT SAT Soloist Christian Tetzlaff, conductor Marcelo Lehninger and SAT composer Harrison Birtwistle take a bow after the premier of SAT Birtwistle's Violin Concerto with the Boston Symphony SAT Orchestra on 3rd March 2011. SAT SAT Misiones province in North East Argentina is a sliver of SAT land between Brazil and Paraguay, more tropical than the SAT rest of Argentina, it is part of the ancestral home of the SAT Guarani people. Home to a large number of Jesuit missions in SAT the 17th Century, during the early part of the 20th Century SAT Misiones received an influx of European immigrants to work SAT on the land, especially from Poland and the Ukraine. These SAT East European farmers brought with them the accordion, which SAT added Schottische and Polkas to an already rich cultural mix SAT and the Chamame was born. SAT SAT Banning Eyre takes internationally renowned chamame SAT accordionist Chango Spasiuk back to his roots in Misiones, SAT to hear about how he learnt the accordion, and to meet and SAT record local musicians. Sergio Tarnovsky is a young local SAT talent from Apostoles who plays the 21 button diatonic SAT accordion known as the verdulera. Lalo Doreto hails from the SAT town of Obera, and is a local radio host, singer, and SAT guitarist, and he puts on a special afternoon session with SAT some friends in his back yard. SAT SAT As well as being the home of Chamame, Misiones is also the SAT home of "yerba mate", the bitter green tea drunk with a SAT metal straw from a hollowed out gourd by almost everyone in SAT Argentina. Chango shows Banning the right, and the wrong way SAT to make and drink it. SAT SAT On the way back from the North East they stop in at the SAT Anconetani accordion factory in Buenos Aires, the first SAT Argentine handmade accordion company, to meet its SAT octagenarian patron Nazereno Anconetani, for a tour of the SAT workshops and a session with one of Chamame's elder SAT statesmen, accordionist Tilo Escobar. It SAT includes two works by leading Japanese composer Jo Kondo, SAT who is celebrated for his delicately minimal soundworld. SAT Oliver Knussen's conducting and composing career has often SAT taken him to the US and to Japan, fuelling an interest in SAT the composers living and working in those countries. He is a SAT long-standing champion of the music of Jo Kondo, whose new SAT Sound Investment commission, Three Songs Tennyson Sung, for SAT soprano and 7 instruments is unveiled in this concert. SAT Kondo's music has been compared to the pointillist painting SAT technique of Georges Seurat. He pays great attention to the SAT colour and sonority of individual notes and instruments. SAT Knussen's Requiem - Songs for Sue, is a memorial piece for SAT his wife Sue Knussen, which sets poetry by Rilke, Emily SAT Dickinson, Machado and WH Auden. The American Morton SAT Feldman's quiet, slowly unfolding music has a kinship with SAT Jo Kondo. Harrison Birtwistle's classic piece Silbury Air SAT was inspired by the mysterious earthwork called Silbury SAT Hill. SUN SUN Edward III can be seen as a defining monarch in the history SUN of the nation. This was the age when the English SUN language started to become the nation's lingua franca; it is SUN the age of The Green Knight; Piers Plowman; and Geoffrey SUN Chaucer. SUN SUN Lucie meets historian Ian Mortimer, an authority of the 14th SUN century and Edward's biographer, to learn more about this SUN period, and she reflects on the Englishness of the music of SUN his age. SUN Le Corbusier, famously, declared his wish to demolish Paris SUN and rebuild the French capital as he thought it should be. SUN At Chandigarh he was offered the only chance in his career SUN to plan and build a city from scratch. A grid system of SUN numbered sectors was devised, acres of low rise housing was SUN built and, at the head of the city, several monumental SUN concrete buildings - new law courts, a double state SUN parliament and administration offices - rose up in front of SUN a backdrop of the beginings of the Himalayas. This was a SUN vast project calling upon huge resources and manual SUN labouring effort. Le Corbusier attended to the epic vision SUN but also to the detail even designing furniture for the SUN parliament and the new man-hole covers. SUN SUN Sukhdev Sandhu, whose parents left the Punjab for SUN Gloucester, visited the new city as a boy. He returns to see SUN how this "vision of the future" has coped 60 years on. SUN Sprawling and chaotic suburbs are rising up all round SUN Chandigarh. The green spaces and idealised geometry of Le SUN Corbusier's city have never looked more threatened. SUN SUN 22:15 Words and Music b00sbc1t (Listen) SUN The Art of Friendship SUN SUN For all the thousands of poems on love, there are distinctly SUN fewer on what could be seen as love's neglected cousin - SUN friendship. And yet friendship is as common to the human SUN experience as love, and probably just as necessary. SUN How should we make friends, keep friends, lose them...? What SUN happens to friendships as we get older? Do men and women see SUN friendship in the same way? What is the true nature of SUN friendship - and is it all it's sometimes cracked up to be? SUN SUN Francis Bacon, writing in 1597, has what seems a pretty SUN modern take on why friends are necessary – they can keep you SUN sane, and yet as Auden points out, the language of SUN friendship, though easy at first, is very difficult to speak SUN well. George Herbert feels that a friend should be a SUN soul-mate, one who can see into your innermost heart, and SUN cites Christ and John, David and Jonathan. There is the SUN great classical friendship of Theseus and Pirithous, former SUN sworn enemies, as told by Plutarch. . And yet there are SUN those who feel that friendship is a much more ordinary thing SUN – Ruskin makes no great demands of his friends, nor does D H SUN Lawrence – “I like him. What else is there?”. Thoreau doubts SUN that the model of the great classical friendship exists at SUN all in his time, and Ogden Nash goes as far as to feel that SUN actually, foes, at a distance, are a lot less bother than a SUN friend in need. SUN SUN And can you be friends without actually meeting? Nadhezda SUN von Meck, Tchaikovsky’s patroness and dedicatee of his 4th SUN symphony, certainly thought perhaps it was safer not to meet SUN her hero. He thought she was probably right… SUN SUN John Clare and Benjamin Disraeli chronicle the joys and SUN sometimes stresses of schoolboy friendships, mistily SUN remembered in later years. And although not about grand SUN passions, the poem written by Edward Thomas about the walks SUN he shared with his friend Robert Frost, and Robert Graves’ SUN poem on the ultimate binding of a friendship in death are SUN deeply affecting. Finally, Derek Walcott rages against the SUN loss of his friends, and strives to keep them in his SUN memory, just as they were, faults and all. SUN SUN On the musical side, I have chosen movements from Ravel’s SUN “Tombeau de Couperin”, each of which were dedicated to SUN friends that he lost in the Great War, although the music SUN itself is not doleful. The great anthem by Weelkes is an SUN evocative setting of David’s lament for the loss of his SUN friend Jonathan. And the famous duet from The Pearl Fishers SUN tells of two men determined to set their friendship above SUN rivalry for the love of the same woman. Brahms’ Double SUN Concerto was partly written as a gesture of reconciliation SUN with his great friend, the violinist Joachim, with whom he SUN had fallen out, and his Scherzo in C minor is part of a SUN curious example of a sonata written in a collaboration SUN between friends – Brahms, Schumann and Dietrich, again as a SUN tribute to Joachim. TUE Today the business and academic communities embrace the TUE 'networks' with the same fervor they once showed the TUE electronic media of the 1960s. Thanks to the internet they TUE have the basic model for 'crowd sourcing', 'data farming' TUE and other forms of research. Online communities of TUE 'netizens' continue to multiply and flourish, offering new TUE perspectives on consumption, relationships, political TUE participation and mass communication. The networks today TUE seem ubiquitous and omnipotent: but do they represent a TUE cultural revolution or a total regime change? And what do we TUE understand of their history or their power? Who and what, TUE finally, do the networks connect us to? TUE TUE 2 'Victorian Search Engines.' Sherlock Holmes had his TUE gazetteers, almanacs and timetables; the City had its Stock TUE Exchange, the Parisians had their pneumatiques and Morse had TUE his code; the early telegraph wires followed the existing TUE network of railways throughout the country, receiving, TUE storing and sending on information. All these examples TUE indicate not just ways of distributing data but also ways of TUE thinking. How much of our own thinking about networks has TUE been influenced by the past? WED WED In the third of his essays, Ken Hollings looks at the impact WED of the Cold War in determining our information networks. In WED 1945 Vannevar Bush, the head of US scientific research WED during World War II, wrote an essay called 'As We May Think' WED - it argued that, thanks to intricate mass-produced WED components, a whole new generation of communication devices WED would soon come into existence. By 1991 CNN was able to WED transmit a live commentary on the opening salvoes of WED Operation Desert Storm from the Baghdad Hilton. And even as WED the cable news network was in its ascendancy and Iraqi WED Command and Control became paralyzed, the public was also WED learning about a new communication system called the WED 'Internet' being used by Kuwaiti citizens to contact the WED outside world. From Sputnik to the development of the World WED Wide Web, the Cold War has provided an ideal climate for the WED network to flourish - with a little help from Neil McElroy, WED the man responsible for inventing the soap opera. It is one of the capital's most popular visitor FRI attractions. Likewise the streets of Camden Town vibrate FRI with energy on Fridays and Saturdays, as revellers enjoy the FRI music and nightlife. FRI FRI Many associate Camden's enduring appeal with the 1960s FRI counter-culture movement. But 'rough around the edges' FRI Camden has a rich cultural heritage, as Alan Dein discovers FRI in A Walk Around Camden. FRI FRI Today the business and academic communities embrace the FRI 'networks' with the same fervor they once showed the FRI electronic media of the 1960s. Thanks to the internet they FRI have the basic model for 'crowd sourcing', 'data farming' FRI and other forms of research. Online communities of FRI 'netizens' continue to multiply and flourish, offering new FRI perspectives on consumption, relationships, political FRI participation and mass communication. The networks today FRI seem ubiquitous and omnipotent: but do they represent a FRI cultural revolution or a total regime change? And what do we FRI understand of their history or their power? Who and what, FRI finally, do the networks connect us to? FRI FRI 5 'Heads in the Clouds' FRI FRI In his final essay, Ken Hollings looks at the implications FRI of the latest information networks. FRI From the earliest centralized networks, when all roads led FRI to and from Rome, to the decentralized networks of the FRI European Enlightenment all the way through the distributed FRI networks of the nuclear age, our paths have never stayed the FRI same for very long. The networks might soon be replaced by FRI 'cloud computing', a method of data storage which will allow FRI you to access data from any terminal, anywhere, at any time. FRI The meteorological metaphor seems appropriate: as data FRI becomes another constantly-shifting element in our global FRI environment. But doesn't being anywhere also mean being FRI nowhere? FRI FRI 23:15 World on 3 b00zm53q (Listen) FRI Les freres Guisse FRI FRI Mary Ann Kennedy presents a trio of Senegalese brothers in FRI session, Les Frères Guissé. The three brothers Djiby, Cheik FRI and Aliou Guissé originate from the Fouta Tooro area in the FRI North of Senegal. Their music, combining poetic lyrics and FRI close harmony singing, two acoustic guitars and a variety of FRI percussion, is based on different rhythms of the Toucouleur, FRI such as the Yela. FRI FRI Plus new music from around the globe. FRI
