SAT SAT Home to the Iceland Symphony Orchestra and Icelandic Opera, SAT it is the country’s first purpose built auditorium, SAT containing 3 performance spaces, the largest of which seats SAT 1800. Nine of them SAT have chosen the career path of warrior-maidens - the SAT Valkyries - including their leader (and Wotan's favourite) SAT Brünnhilde. The other two are a pair of twins, Siegmund and SAT Sieglinde. Many of his films involve SUN an element of improvisation, and Mike Leigh has launched the SUN careers of an impressive array of distinguished British SUN actors, including Alison Steadman. Brenda Blethyn, David SUN Thewlis, Sally Hawkins, Liz Smith and Jane Horrocks. His SUN play 'Ecstasy' is currently enjoying a West End revival. SUN SUN Mike Leigh's choices begin with two extracts by Gilbert and SUN Sullivan. He starts with a comic duet from 'Ruddigore' (I SUN once was a very abandoned person)l, and goes on to 'The SUN World is but a broken toy' from 'Princess Ida', which he SUN loves for its sentimental charm. Mike Leigh sees Mozart's SUN 'Cosi fan tutte' as essentially a comic opera, and has SUN selected the gorgeous trio 'Soave sia il vento' from Act I. SUN Then comes another facet of comic opera - the Doll's Song SUN from Act II of Offenbach's 'The Tales of Hoffmann', which he SUN used as the background to the brothel scene in 'Topsy SUN Turvy'. There's also the original 1928 recording of the SUN Ballad of Mack the Knife from Weill/Brecht's 'Threepenny SUN Opera', an extract from a film score by Shostakovich, Jeanne SUN Moreau singing 'Le Tourbillon de la vie' from Truffaut's SUN famous film 'Jules et Jim'; 'Blue in Green' from Miles SUN Davis' 'Kind of Blue', and finally the Rondo from SUN Beethoven's Violin Concerto (Mike Leigh used Beethoven to SUN great effect in 'Abigail's Party'). Tourists have SUN returned to the sultry shores, narrow cobbled streets and SUN magnificent walled ramparts of this Caribbean colonial city, SUN a place enshrined in the work of perhaps Latin America's SUN greatest living author, Gabriel Garcia Marquez. SUN SUN Poet and novelist Owen Sheers first visited Cartagena six SUN years ago, for the inaugural Hay Festival Cartagena - a SUN South American outpost of one of the UK's most eminent SUN literature festivals. Now, the famous trundle of carts SUN bearing tropical fruit across the old city's hot cobbles has SUN been joined by the luggage of curious literary tourists, SUN hoping to catch a glimpse of giants of the global and Latin SUN American book world - not to mention feast on the sounds, SUN sights, characters and locations that inspired Marquez's SUN greatest works. SUN SUN But Cartagena is also a city divided - split between the SUN haves of the gilded old town and glitzy outer suburbs and SUN the poor have-nots of its teeming barrios. Have the fruits SUN of this literary phenomenon really benefitted the poor SUN Colombians of the city's outskirts, or is it merely a SUN diversion for its new, wealthy middle classes? And how much SUN can a country be redeemed by its own literary heritage, when SUN many have little access to books? SUN SUN Featuring contributions from Germaine Greer, as well as SUN Colombian novelist Jorge Franco and Festival Director Peter SUN Florence - as well as music from Cuba's Buena Vista Social SUN Club - Owen Sheers asks how much a thriving literary SUN heritage can be transformed to practically change a society SUN for the better. He speaks to students, charity bosses and SUN authors and visits the barrios - as well as the haunts of SUN the city's literati - to discover the successes and the SUN limitations of Cartagena's literary renaissance. SUN SUN 22:15 Words and Music b0112d03 (Listen) SUN Brave New Worlds SUN SUN From John Dowland’s Renaissance lute music to Kraftwerk’s SUN electronica, ideas of the future have woven themselves SUN through literature and music for centuries. Writers and SUN composers have created dystopian landscapes, imagined life SUN in space or meditated on the individual’s future life to SUN come. SUN SUN The Recital of Lost Cities, by Lavinia Greenlaw, offers us a SUN meditation on the possible impact of global warming - the SUN poem ends with an almost religious incantation of the names SUN of cities lost to rising sea levels - while Matthew SUN Sweeney’s Zero Hour presents a civilised world in chaos as a SUN result of dwindling oil supplies. SUN SUN Dystopian futures have been beautifully and terrifyingly SUN created by writers like Margaret Atwood who creates a 21st SUN century America where women are subjugated in The Handmaid’s SUN Tale. George Orwell’s Nineteen Eighty-Four similarly SUN portrays a society under constant surveillance with the SUN threat of Big Brother looming over it. SUN SUN Preceding both these novels is HG Wells’ Time Machine, one SUN of the most influential works of science fiction which SUN popularised the idea of time travel. Wells’ vision of the SUN future ended with a world hurtling towards extinction. In SUN contrast the Credo, from Beethoven’s Missa Solemnis, focuses SUN on eternity and the joy of the life hereafter. SUN SUN The poems by Louis MacNeice and Philip Larkin both reflect SUN on the future of an individual's life. MacNeice's Prayer SUN Before Birth is a plea for protection - from an unborn child SUN - against the horrors of the world, and it almost provides SUN an answer or response to Larkin’s Born Yesterday, which SUN offers advice to a newly born baby girl. SUN SUN Several composers have inscribed the future of music into SUN their work. In Schoenberg’s String Quartet No.2, the SUN soprano declares Ich fuehle luft von andern planeten - I SUN feel air from another planet - which is meant to symbolise SUN the future of music. John Dowland’s Farewell was hugely SUN ahead of its time with its ascending chromatic theme also SUN pointing towards the future. MON MON 12:00 Composer of the Week b0112fk1 (Listen) MON George Gershwin (1898-1937), Tin Pan Alley to Broadway MON MON When George Gershwin died prematurely of a brain MON haemorrhage, on July 12th 1937, aged only 38, the news MON stunned the globe. In barely two decades, he'd become the MON most famous musician in America, possibly the world - a MON one-time lowly song plugger from the musical furnace of New MON York's famous 'Tin Pan Alley' who had become a star of both MON the Broadway stage and the concert hall. MON MON Virtually no composer before or since bridged the popular, MON jazz and classical worlds as remarkably and adeptly as MON Gershwin - and more than eight decades on, Gershwin's music MON continues to inspire music across the musical spectrum. MON MON This week, Donald Macleod presents an overview of some of MON the composer's most brilliant works from both the concert MON stage and the world of musicals - showing off his MON extraordinary gift for melody, and discussing his MON often-overlooked originality and daring as a so-called MON 'serious' composer. TUE TUE Harvard professor William James, elder brother of the TUE novelist Henry James, believed that humans have a religious TUE propensity, a natural leaning towards religion. THU THU Mystic, vegetarian, bookseller, sewage expert and much more THU besides, Adela Curtis was a remarkable woman. Born in 1864, THU she lived to the age of 96. After running a restaurant and THU bookshop in Kensington in the early years of the 20th THU century, she went on to found her own religious order for THU women - the Order of Silence - in Coldash, near Newbury in THU Berkshire. Members were celibate, vegetarian and THU contemplative, but the Order was not aligned with any THU particular church. THU THU In 1921, aged 57, Adela Curtis then retired to live near THU Burton Bradstock in Dorset. But her followers visited with THU such frequency that a new community was formed. Each member THU of the community lived in a simple hut surrounded by a small THU piece of land for cultivation. The women wove their own THU robes from undyed silk or cotton - resulting in their being THU dubbed the 'White Ladies' - by the locals. Visitors came THU from far and wide and Aldous Huxley thought Adela Curtis, THU who died in 1960, one of the greatest living mystics. THU THU 23:00 Late Junction b0112g6g (Listen) THU Verity Sharp with a late-night music mix, and, at around THU midnight, this month's Late Junction session, a THU collaboration between Celtic bard Robin Williamson, founder THU member of the Incredible String Band, and experimental THU composer and master of the melodic understatement Howard THU Skempton. Plus a motet by Bruckner, the Indian veena playing THU of Nirmala Rajasekar and a Russian folksong in the key of THU sadness. THU THU Robin Williamson, Scottish singer, songwriter, Celtic harp THU player and Honorary Chief Bard of the Order of Bards, Ovates THU and Druids, is best known for his work in the 1960s with The THU Incredible String Band. In recent years, he has devoted THU himself to reviving the traditions of storytelling in music, THU drawing influences from folk, jazz, early music and eastern THU music. THU THU Howard Skempton also made an impact in the musical world in THU the 1960s, as part of Cornelius Cardew's Scratch Orchestra, THU which pioneered performances of experimental music by John THU Cage and Terry Riley, as well as compositions by band THU members. His recent music is characterised by brevity and THU sharp concentration, and has been acclaimed for its THU accessibility and focus on sonority. One critic has THU described his style as 'complex beauty under a veneer of THU simplicity'. THU THU In this special collaboration for Late Junction, Robin THU Williamson and Howard Skempton are given six hours in the THU studio, and free rein to create any music as they wish. FRI FRI Artists - as well as devout Christians and seekers on the FRI edge of institutional religion - sought a path to union with FRI the divine. Kandinsky's manifesto on the relationship FRI between spirituality and art - The Art of Spiritual Harmony FRI (later retitled Concerning the Spiritual in Art) - was first FRI published in English in 1914 (it had originally been FRI published in German in 1912). Kandinsky believed that art FRI belonged to the spiritual realm, that form and colour were FRI central, and that there was a link between so-called FRI "primitive art" and the spiritual. He was not alone. His FRI views were echoed in the art of his contemporaries: in the FRI paintings of the Post-impressionists; in Stravinsky's Rite FRI of Spring, performed by Diaghilev's Ballets Russes, which FRI had its premiere in Paris in 1913; and in The New Science of FRI Colour by New York poet, Beatrice Irwin.
