In 2005 he recorded an edition of SUN Private Passions, in which he talked about the music he SUN loved. This is another chance to hear that conversation with SUN Michael Berkeley. SUN SUN Patrick Leigh Fermor was born in London in 1915, the son of SUN a distinguished geologist. He was brought up in England SUN after his parents left for India, and attended The Kings SUN School, Canterbury, from which he was expelled for holding SUN hands with a local greengrocer's daughter. At the age of 18 SUN he set off to walk across Europe to Constantinople (now SUN Istanbul), a journey which later inspired his two finest SUN travel books, 'A Time of Gifts' (1977) and 'Between the SUN Woods and the Water' (1986). After further travels in the SUN Balkans, he fought in Crete and mainland Greece during World SUN War II. His exploits with the Greek Resistance in Crete SUN inspired his fellow-officer Captain Bill Stanley Moss's book SUN 'Ill Met by Moonlight', later adapted as a film, with Dirk SUN Bogarde playing Leigh Fermor. He published his first travel SUN book in 1950, and became widely regarded as Britain's SUN greatest living travel writer. He divided his time between SUN his beloved Greece and Worcestershire, and was knighted in SUN 2004. SUN SUN Patrick Leigh Fermor loved music of all kinds, from Greek SUN folksongs to Irving Berlin. His eclectic selection for SUN Private Passions includes an extract from Mozart's Don SUN Giovanni and the finale of the Sinfonia concertante K364 for SUN violin and viola; part of Schubert's 'Trout' Quintet; part SUN of the Tenebrae Responsories by Victoria; Debussy's Gigues SUN (from Images); Britten's arrangement of The Salley Gardens, SUN and Michael Berkeley's own Variations on Greek Folk Songs SUN for solo viola, inspired by Leigh Fermor's own celebrated SUN vocal renditions. Framing them are two of Beethoven's SUN most inventive and joyous symphonies. SUN Carter's Flute Concerto is a dazzling creation. Written in SUN 2008 at the age of 99, it contrasts the flute's lyrical SUN qualities with a percussive orchestral texture. Dalbavie set SUN out to write a homage to Debussy, and whilst his concerto is SUN certainly rooted in the great French tradition, it's also SUN full of fireworks and exploding excitement. Three contrasting short works are SUN framed by his cantata, Spring, which he composed in 1902 SUN just after his famous Second Piano Concerto, and the SUN evocative choral symphony, The Bells, composed a decade SUN later. SUN SUN The Russian text of Spring tells of a man who harbours SUN murderous thoughts towards his unfaithful wife during the SUN winter, but is released from his anger and frustration by SUN the return of spring. For The Bells, Rachmaninov turned to a SUN Russian translation of poems by Edgar Allan Poe, and the SUN work's four movements mirror the human life span from birth SUN to death through the 'Silver Sleigh Bells', 'Mellow Wedding SUN Bells', 'Loud Alarum Bells' and 'Mournful Iron Bells'. SUN SUN Written and performed by Lemn Sissay SUN Directed by Claire Grove SUN SUN 22:15 Words and Music b012whsn (Listen) SUN Reconciliation SUN SUN In our personal lives or on the world stage, reconciliation SUN is an essential part of humankind's co-existence and SUN civility. It can sometimes be a painful process, admitting SUN our mistakes or failings, but it can also be a moment of SUN celebration where we achieve redemption and forgiveness; SUN where we can put the past behind us and move forward with SUN great hope and optimism. Actors Harriet Walter and Oliver SUN Dimsdale read poetry by John Donne, Peter Porter and SUN Christina Rossetti, with music by Tchaikovsky, John Adams SUN and Nick Cave. SUN SUN Acts of reconciliation have been important moments in many SUN countries’ political histories – for example in South Africa SUN following apartheid; or across Europe in the aftermath of SUN two world wars. SUN SUN Desmond Tutu wrote that “true reconciliation exposes the SUN awfulness, the abuse, the hurt, the truth. It could even SUN sometimes make things worse. It is a risky undertaking but SUN in the end it is worthwhile, because in the end only an SUN honest confrontation with reality can bring real healing.” SUN SUN Nkosi Sikelel ‘iAfrica, originally a Methodist hymn and here SUN performed by Ladysmith Black Mambazo, was used by the SUN resistance movement in South Africa in its campaign against SUN Apartheid. In 1997, and following the fall of the regime, SUN it was taken to form the country’s official National Anthem SUN to illustrate how opposing factions had finally come SUN together. SUN SUN Siegfried Sassoon and Laurie Lee have both emphasised the SUN need for reconciliation in their war poetry. They suggest SUN war brings death and destruction for both sides and what one SUN should focus on is universal brotherhood. It’s a theme that SUN Beethoven describes in the fourth movement of his 9th SUN Symphony: Menschen werden Bruder – all men will become SUN brothers. Similarly Schubert’s Piano Sonata in A is a great SUN symbol of reconciliation as the key shifts from minor to SUN major. SUN SUN This edition of the Words and Music begins with the hope SUN that reconciliation can bring. The Landing of the Spirit of SUN ’76 from John Adams’ opera Nixon in China symbolises the SUN anxiety and expectation the world felt when President Nixon SUN travelled to meet Chou En-Lai and Mao Tse-Tung in an attempt SUN at bringing two nations together: old enemies could become SUN friends and the politics that hitherto had divided nations SUN might come to an end. SUN SUN It’s an idea we return to later in the programme with SUN another piece from the opera, News has a kind of mystery, in SUN which Nixon explains his anxiety that ‘the whole world was SUN listening’ to the landmark meeting between two countries. SUN SUN On a domestic scale, reconciliation can be part of the SUN healing process following the break down of a relationship. SUN In James Fenton’s The Mistake, the author describes the SUN heartbreaking moment when you realise ‘exactly what you did SUN / wrong’. It’s a moment of dismay but that we must ‘Lay SUN claim to’ these mistakes in order to achieve real healing. SUN SUN Anna Swir’s poem Tomorrow they will carve me, illustrates SUN how moments of distress can similarly bring epiphanies and SUN revelations as it explains how she’s coming to terms with SUN her fate of having to undergo surgery and the risks it SUN poses. MON MON 22:45 The Essay b00swqf6 (Listen) MON Reflections on Caravaggio, John Gash MON MON The Milanese painter, Michelangelo Merisi da Caravaggio has MON intrigued the modern imagination more than any other old MON master. Renowned in his own time for the innovative and MON shocking realism of his paintings, often celebrated nowadays MON for the tempestuous lifestyle which informed his work, he is MON remembered as the creator of art that influenced and MON inspired. MON MON First broadcast 400 years after his death in July 1610, MON these portraits of the painter offer a series of personal MON responses to his work, life and legacy. The first is MON delivered by John Gash, Senior Lecturer in the History of MON Art at Aberdeen University, who introduces the artist, and MON argues that an existential edge sustained Caravaggio as his MON technical and creative virtuosity developed. His techniques MON of painting direct to canvas, and of employing chiaroscuro, MON contrasts of light and shade, were revolutionary procedures MON that demonstrate a ceaseless quest for clarity and honesty. MON MON When Caravaggio moves from northern Italy to seek patronage MON and fame in Rome, the celebrity he attracts there is MON entwined with visceral and violent behaviour, which itself MON is then replicated in aspects of his work that depict sacred MON Christian subjects. The grand religious commissions such as MON The Martyrdom of St. Matthew negotiate a dangerous boundary MON between fulfilling the Counter Reformation ideals of the MON Roman Catholic Church and offending its sense of decorum. Percy Grainger died 50 years ago this year TUE and the trio marks the anniversary with a performance of his TUE "Colonial Song" which was orignally conceived as a piano TUE piece and a gift to his mother. Two specially commissioned TUE works for this concert are Philip Hammond's "Meditation No. TUE 1", which uses the Irish folksong "The Parting Fields" as TUE the basis of the work, and Stephen Gardner's "The Madfly", a TUE homage to the aviation pioneer Lilian Bland, the first woman TUE to fly a self-constructed plane. The concert ends with TUE Ravel' s sumptuous Piano Trio in A minor, a work inspired by TUE his native Basque country and written in a flurry before TUE World War I, it combines the composer's mastery of TUE composition with his palate of intoxicating colour. TUE TUE The Violin Concerto is preceded by the BBC Singers TUE performing one of Elgar's most radical part-songs, notated TUE in two keys simultaneously in a manner which parallels the TUE incorrigible experiments of the Australian composer Percy TUE Grainger. Grainger's orchestral suite reaches its grand TUE finale - called the Gum Suckers' March - by way of some TUE unpredictable and darkly complex invention. In direct contrast Coleridge threw himself TUE into the life of intellectual society at the University town TUE of Gottingen, learning the language, reading the leading TUE German Romantics Goethe and Schiller, and steeping himself TUE in the philosophical thoughts of Kant and Schelling. When he TUE returned to England he brought back a deep knowledge of the TUE German Romantic movement which informed his future writing TUE and his influence on the writers and thinkers who visited TUE him. TUE TUE John Worthen travels to Gottingen and walks in the footsteps TUE of Coleridge, a task made easy in that Coleridge wrote TUE copious notebooks which recorded everything - from his TUE enjoyment of the German beer, to the lectures he attended, TUE and his love of the countryside. WED WED 22:00 Sunday Feature b00swq96 (Listen) WED Goethe's Oak WED WED Christopher Cook walks from the town of Weimar, home of WED Goethe and German culture, through the beech woods to the WED site of the former concentration camp of Buchenwald. Uniting WED all these places and three generations of German memory and WED culture is the stump of Goethe's Oak, a tree whose own story WED branches through turbulent and often cruel history. WED WED Oral history of survivors, including the final interview WED with Norwegian Reidar Dittmann, the poetry of Goethe and the WED fiction of Buchenwald's most powerful story teller Jorge WED Semprun, who also died this year, weave in and out of Cook's WED journey to create a powerful tale of culture and survival. WED WED August 1944, a tree burns in Buchenwald concentration camp. WED Goethe's Oak is on fire, hit by a stray incendiary bomb. To WED some of the prisoners in this wretched place its final WED moments were prophetic. Surely the days of the Nazi Reich WED must be numbered now. Goethe's Oak, 'the Fat Oak', with its WED wizened and gnarled trunk had become a powerful symbol for WED those imprisoned in the camp at Buchenwald. Supposedly, this WED was the very tree where Goethe had once sat with his love to WED contemplate the beauty of the woods and the world around WED him. Here he supposedly wrote such poems as the immortal WED Wanderer's Night Song. WED WED The woods at Ettersberg that surround the oak are just a WED short walk from the town of Weimar where Goethe had made his WED reputation as one of the great thinkers of the age, helping WED to define a new German culture & identity. WED The National Socialists also loved Weimar. The Hitler Youth WED were founded nearby; Hitler stayed there frequently and WED spoke at public rallies. Then in 1937, the S.S. decided to WED carve out a concentration camp out of the Ettersberg. WED That was the camp's first name but local objections, uneasy WED about associating a camp with the revered name of Goethe, WED saw the camp renamed as Buchenwald. The only tree left WED standing in this vast complex was the 'Goethe Oak' . For the WED Nazi's it legitimated their regime, showed their love for WED history and German culture and their desire to incorporate WED Goethe's world into the Nazi one. For the prisoners, WED stealing precious moments from their murderous labours, the WED branches offered precious shade and a reminder of the other WED Germany that had been imprisoned with them. WED WED Now, twenty years after the end of East Germany and WED sixty-five years after the American army liberated WED Buchenwald, the many meanings of both tree and camp continue WED to occupy survivors, historians and perhaps Germany itself. WED WED Producer: Mark Burman. WED WED 22:45 The Essay b00swqtt (Listen) WED Reflections on Caravaggio, Sybille Ebert-Schifferer WED WED The Milanese painter, Michelangelo Merisi da Caravaggio has WED intrigued the modern imagination more than any other old WED master. Renowned in his own time for the innovative and WED shocking realism of his paintings, often celebrated nowadays WED for the tempestuous lifestyle which informed his work, he is WED remembered as the creator of art that influenced and WED inspired. WED WED First broadcast 400years after his death in July 1610, these WED portraits of the painter offer a series of personal WED responses to his work, life and legacy. Tonight's essay is WED by Professor Sybille Ebert-Schifferer, Director at the WED Bibliotheca Hertziana, Max Planck Institute in Rome, and WED author of the monograph Caravaggio, Sehen - Staunen - WED Glauben [see - be amazed - believe]. She considers his art WED both sophisticated and unprecedented, and insists that we WED need to appreciate the values of the age he lived in, in WED order to understand the painter and his work. Ever socially WED ambitious, Caravaggio had an overwhelming sense of honour WED which, when it led to violence, could bring him harm, but it WED was his ability to create meraviglia, or wonder, in his art WED that earned him the appreciation of princes and people WED alike. THU THU Georg Buchner was only 23 when he died of typhus in Zurich THU in 1837. By then he had a reputation as a biological THU scientist. He had also been a revolutionary, calling on THU workers to overthrow the ruling aristocrats. He had to flee THU the state to escape arrest and his picture appeared on THU wanted posters. THU THU He returned to his family, promising to concentrate on his THU studies, but in five weeks he wrote 'Danton's Death', hiding THU the script under scientific notes whenever anyone came in. THU This is now widely regarded (by the dramatist Howard THU Brenton, for instance) as the greatest play about THU revolution. THU THU When he died he left, unfinished, 'Woyzeck', the first play THU in which the central character is working class. He also THU wrote a novella, 'Lenz', the first to delineate a THU schizophrenic breakdown. This marks the beginning of modern THU German prose literature. Yet, when he died, and for most of THU the 19th century, Buchner was unknown as a writer. THU THU In 'The World is Out of Order!' And to mark the 50th anniversary of Grainger's FRI death, his In a Nutshell Suite receives a first outing at FRI the Proms. FRI FRI The Violin Concerto is preceded by the BBC Singers FRI performing one of Elgar's most radical part-songs, notated FRI in two keys simultaneously in a manner which might be said FRI to parallel the incorrigible experiments of the Australian FRI composer Percy Grainger. Grainger's orchestral suite reaches FRI its grand finale - called the Gum Suckers' March - by way of FRI some unpredictable and darkly complex invention. FRI FRI Formed from pupils of Venezuela's El Sistema programme, an FRI initiative that offers every child a free musical education, FRI the players have been performing together since childhood, FRI and have lit up concert halls around the world with their FRI technical skill, passion and deep musicality - as their FRI concert master violinist Alejandro Carreno says: "for us FRI this isn't a job, not even a concert, for us music is all of FRI life". Tonight under the baton of fellow El Sistema alumni FRI Gustavo Dudamel they team up with the young singers of the FRI National Youth Choir of Great Britain and distinguished FRI soloists to perform a colossus of the repertoire. Written FRI for vast forces, Mahler's symphony takes a journey from the FRI graveside, asks the question 'is there life after death?' FRI and ends with a triumphant promise of eternal life. It's a FRI work Alejandro Carreno and all the orchestra love, "Mahler's FRI music is so descriptive, the atmosphere it creates is like FRI that of an opera. We hugely enjoy playing his music." FRI FRI Mahler: Symphony No. 2 in C minor 'Resurrection' FRI FRI Miah Persson (soprano) FRI Anna Larsson (mezzo-soprano) FRI National Youth Choir of Great Britain FRI Simón Bolívar Symphony Orchestra of Venezuela FRI Gustavo Dudamel (conductor) FRI FRI The Prom will be repeated on Tuesday 9th August at 2pm. FRI FRI 21:15 Sunday Feature b00zt5tj (Listen) FRI Among the Ranks of the Angels - Rainer Maria Rilke FRI FRI Since Stephen Spender in the 1930s our finest poets have FRI made versions of Rilke's poems. Martyn Crucefix, who has FRI translated the 'Duino Elegies,' explores their attraction. FRI FRI Rilke never visited Britain and disliked the English FRI language. He thought far more of Dante than Shakespeare. But FRI his best known work, the 'Duino Elegies', completed in the FRI same year as The Wasteland, has had the greatest impact on FRI English readers and writers of any modern European poem. FRI Martyn Crucefix's translation was published in 2006, as was FRI Don Paterson's 'Orpheus: A Version of Rilke', hailed as FRI Paterson's best book of poetry. Seamus Heaney has translated FRI his sonnets and Jo Shapcott the poems he wrote in French FRI towards the end of his life. She says "Rilke's poems FRI fascinate because they demand you pour yourself into them. FRI The act of reading them is more like writing...or prayer." FRI FRI Rilke fascinates readers, too. You might be hard-pressed to FRI find Thomas Mann in a bookshop these days, but if there is a FRI poetry section Rilke will be there. FRI FRI In this feature Martyn Crucefix talks to writers including FRI Don Paterson; Jo Shapcott; Rowan Willams, the Archbishop of FRI Canterbury, who has also translated some of Rilke's poems; FRI Philip Pullman, who also admires him greatly, and Karen FRI Leeder, Professor of German at Oxford University. FRI FRI Crucefix unpacks Rilke, revealing what makes him so FRI engaging: his idea that a poem is an object in itself, that FRI the poet's role is to sing, to praise. But Rilke is a poet FRI without God. Existence is the wonder, not death the FRI disaster. The poets explore Rilke's ideas of the role of the FRI imagination and inspiration, and how he renders the subtlest FRI of experiences in language of great beauty. FRI FRI Producer: Julian May. FRI FRI 22:45 The Essay b00swr1p (Listen) FRI Reflections on Caravaggio, Reflections on Caravaggio FRI FRI The Milanese painter, Michelangelo Merisi da Caravaggio has FRI intrigued the modern imagination more than any other old FRI master. Renowned in his own time for the innovative and FRI shocking realism of his paintings, often celebrated nowadays FRI for the tempestuous lifestyle which informed his work, he is FRI remembered as the creator of art that influenced and FRI inspired. FRI FRI First broadcast 400 years after his death in July 1610, FRI these portraits of the painter offer a series of personal FRI responses to his work, life and legacy. Tonight's essay is FRI by Ben Quash, Professor of Christianity and the Arts at FRI King's College London, who maintains that in his great FRI religious paintings such as The Calling of St. Matthew and FRI The Raising of Lazarus Caravaggio is a master of capturing FRI movement and the vibrancy of exchange. Furthermore, it is FRI contended that in depicting exceptional relations between FRI people and things in his religious works, the artist who FRI espoused a turbulent and morally doubtful way of life, came FRI as near as is possible in painting to representing God. FRI FRI Caravaggio was no stranger to darkness in his own life, and FRI made evocative use of darkness and shadow in his work, but FRI might he have had a kind of faith that itself could be a FRI midwife to light?
