SAT SAT 19:30 Opera on 3 b01dn7hl (Listen) SAT The Spirit of Schubert, Fierrabras SAT SAT BBC Radio 3's celebration of The Spirit of Schubert SAT continues with Fierrabras, Schubert's last completed opera SAT and an early example of the German romantic operatic style. SAT The story is set in the courts of the Frankish King SAT Charlemagne and the Moorish Prince Boland. Boland's son and SAT daughter are both in love with members of the Frankish SAT court. While his daughter, Florinda wins her knight, his SAT son, Fierrabras realises his love, Emma is already in love SAT with somebody else. SAT SAT Because of the vogue for Italian opera in the 1820s, SAT especially Rossini, Schubert's Fierrabras was overlooked by SAT the Kärntnertor Theatre who commissioned it, and it didn't SAT get its first performance for another 60 years. It has never SAT really entered the repertory, but is a dramatic tale of SAT love, honour, courage and chivalry with some glorious music. SAT It's given here by a stellar cast including Karita Mattila SAT and Josef Protschka, conducted by Claudio Abbado. SAT SAT 22:00 Play Schubert for Me b01dn7hn (Listen) SAT 1815 Day SAT SAT As part of Radio 3's celebration of The Spirit of Schubert, SAT Sara Mohr-Pietsch presents late night Schubert requests and SAT dedications. SAT SAT Write to her with your Schubert requests and dedications. SAT Email: schubert@bbc.co.uk SAT SAT Live in the studio across the week she'll also feature SAT exclusive Schubert Remixed sessions, with contemporary SAT artists from across the genres reinterpreting some of SAT Schubert's great songs live in the studio. SAT SAT Including at 1130, the Schubert Essay. Schubert was SAT described as the "musician who also seemed a magician" in SAT appealing to so many. But attempts to explain both his SAT achievements and mood swings through theory, often fall SAT short of explanation. The writer, philosopher and retired SAT medical doctor Raymond Tallis re examines the neurological SAT and psychological evidence of a composer who increasingly SAT meditated on the darker side of the human psyche and human SAT relationships. Who has claimed Schubert - and why? And SUN what are the different things that he has come to represent SUN since his death in 1837? SUN SUN For many decades across parts of Europe there was a Romantic SUN interpretation of Schubert as lovelorn, naïve and at one SUN with nature. SUN SUN He has also been seen in a feminine context, especially SUN after the composer Robert Schumann described him as having SUN feminine qualities when compared to Beethoven. SUN SUN But Schubert has also been appropriated by political SUN leaders. The emerging Christian Socialist Party in 20th SUN century Vienna used Schubert to exemplify a nostalgic, SUN non-multicultural way of life. This fitted in with their SUN anti-semitic and anti-liberal policies. John explores the SUN significance of this use of Schubert and how this link with SUN fascism developed throughout the century. SUN SUN And John hears how the novelist George Eliot and the painter SUN Gustav Klimt refashioned Schubert and brought a different SUN view of him to a wider public. SUN SUN Producer: Emma Kingsley.
