She also picks highlights from a year SAT of Music Matters interviews. SAT SAT Charles Rosen (1927 - 2012) SAT American pianist and author Charles Rosen died on Sunday SAT aged 85. During his career as a pianist some of the most SAT notable composers of the 20th century invited Rosen to SAT record their piano works – including Stravinsky’s ‘Movements SAT for Piano and Orchestra’, Elliott Carter’s ‘Double Concerto’ SAT and all of Pierre Boulez’s piano works. But it’s not just SAT recordings of the 20th century works that Rosen will be SAT remembered for, he received Grammy Award nominations for his SAT original recordings of the Beethoven Sonatas and the SAT Diabelli Variations. SAT SAT Away from the piano Rosen was a distinguished writer – his SAT best known publication being the 1971 book The Classical SAT Style which studied the musical language of Haydn, Mozart SAT and Beethoven. SAT SAT Suzy Klein is joined by Sir Nicholas Kenyon who shares his SAT memories of Charles Rosen. SAT SAT The Hanseatic League SAT The Hanseatic League was an economic alliance of trading SAT cities that flourished in northern Europe for several SAT hundred years between the 13th – 17th centuries. This SAT alliance spread from Cologne to Bremen, to the south coast SAT of the Baltic Sea, from Gdansk in Poland to Riga in Latvia. SAT It also included Tallinn, Krakow, Dinant in France and, in SAT Britain, London, Norwich, Hull, Edinburgh and Kings Lynn. SAT Former Hanseatic towns can still be recognised today, with SAT grand town halls in front of huge market places, SAT opulently-gabled houses and high church towers. Festive SAT hymns and carols like In Dulci Jubilo and Nun komm, der SAT Heiden Heiland were written during the golden age of the SAT Hanseatic League and are still heard at this time of the SAT year. SAT SAT Suzy Klein explores the history of the Hanseatic League and SAT the impact that it had for music with the German Baroque SAT conductor Reinhard Goebel, Dr Stephen Rose, Senior Lecturer SAT in Music at Royal Holloway, and Gawain Glenton – Cornetto SAT player with the English Cornett and Sackbut Ensemble. SAT SAT Mummers Plays SAT It’s believed that Mummers Plays date from the SAT mid-eighteenth century when, during festival times, a troupe SAT of men would perform folk dramas in the homes of wealthy SAT people to raise money for the Christmas festivities. With SAT characters including St. George and Father Christmas they’re SAT part of our winter folk heritage. SAT SAT Suzy Klein discovers the history of Mummers Plays with Steve SAT Roud and Dr. Peter Millington, both experts on English SAT Folklore, and visits the Potterne Christmas Boys in a pub in SAT Wiltshire to hear Mumming in its natural habitat. SAT SAT Highlights from Music Matters in 2012 SAT Suzy Klein looks back at some of the highlights of Music SAT Matters in 2012. We hear composer John Adams talking his SAT ever-controversial opera The Death of Klinghoffer and the SAT conductor Nikolaus Harnoncourt on the necessity of always SAT taking musical risks. There are also appearances from Peter SAT Gelb, General Manager of the Metropolitan Opera, pianist SAT András Schiff, and the conductor Antonio Pappano among SAT others. SUN SUN 19:45 Sunday Feature b01p9d6x (Listen) SUN On Napoleon, British Romanticism and Napoleon SUN SUN British Romanticism and Napoleon: Simon Bainbridge explores SUN the love and the hate and how, from the French Revolution to SUN his end on St Helena, Napoleon shaped poetry in Britain. To SUN early British Romantic writers, like Wordsworth and SUN Coleridge, Napoleon's rise after the French Revolution was a SUN cause for celebration. But soon "the bringer of liberty - SUN the layer out of the world garden", as Coleridge called him, SUN seemed more of a tyrant than those he had replaced. Other SUN younger writers and poets in Britain thought and wrote SUN differently. Some used their belief in and feelings for SUN Napoleon to shake off the influence and over-weening SUN presence of their literary fathers. William Hazlitt remained SUN a Napoleon devotee to distance himself from the Lake poets. SUN Byron was his own man and launched a second (sometime SUN one-man) craze for Napoleon. He even commissioned a replica SUN of Napoleon's carriage to travel to Waterloo on a pilgrimage SUN after the defeat of his hero. Simon Bainbridge, scholar of SUN Romanticism, travels to Paris and to Waterloo. He traces the SUN footsteps of the literary pilgrims and the decriers and SUN explores their love-hate relationship with Napoleon and his SUN legacy in British literature. Producer: Tim Dee. MON As a young man, Brahms, like many of his contemporaries, MON fell under the spell of Romanticism and all the heady MON literature that erupted in that era.
