SAT SAT Yuri Goligorsky, formerly of the Russian Service, returns to SAT the site of the Bush House dormitory, where night-shift SAT presenters were offered a bed - although Yuri found the SAT snoring unbearable. Bush House studio manager Robin SAT Warren reveals how he captured and mixed the sounds of the SAT building's marble stairwells, and composer and musician SAT Matthew Herbert, now director of the BBC Radiophonic SAT Workshop, reflects on Bush's unique sound world - and why SAT it's vital to record it. Nightmares are also well represented. SUN Captain Ahab’s disturbed nights are caused by his obsession SUN for revenge against the whale Moby Dick – the accompanying SUN music by Peter Mennin was inspired by Meville’s novel. Emily SUN Bronte’s 'Wuthering Heights' features another famous SUN nightmare; Mr Lockwood dreams of a ghostly child called SUN Catherine trying to get in through his window. SUN SUN There are also aspirational dreams, both literary and real. SUN In 'The Gathering Storm', Winston Churchill describes his SUN anticipation at taking control of Britain during the 2nd SUN World War. For George Mallory, his only dream is to conquer SUN Mount Everest, and Liszt’s symphonic poem 'Ce qu’on entend SUN sur la montagne' seemed to provide a suitably inspirational SUN soundtrack. Jude the Obscure is desperate to escape his SUN miserable existence by becoming a scholar in the city of SUN Christminster, which he has built up in his mind to have SUN almost mythical status. For other characters, the route to SUN happiness is more mercenary; Rebecca Sharp sees a rich SUN husband as her salvation, and this is accompanied by an SUN equally grasping operatic character – Massenet’s 'Manon'. SUN SUN In the Bible Joseph has a famously prophetic dream, a story SUN which was set to music by Handel in his little known sacred SUN drama 'Joseph and his Brethren'. Coleridge claimed to have SUN written his poem 'Kubla Khan' the day after an opium-induced SUN dream, which has an obvious parallel with Berlioz’s SUN 'Symphonie Fantastique' in which a young musician dreams of SUN his love after having poisoned himself, also with opium. The SUN programme ends with WB Yeats’ poem 'He Wishes for the Cloths SUN of Heaven', with a beautiful setting of the text by Howard SUN Skempton: "Tread softly, because you tread on my dreams." SUN SUN Ellie Mant (Producer) SUN SUN 19:45 Sunday Feature b01pd3nb (Listen) SUN Stop Calling Me 'Doctor Sex' SUN SUN Matthew Sweet uncovers the extraordinary career of Dr Alex SUN Comfort, author of The Joy of Sex. SUN SUN By the time of his death in 2000, Comfort's 1972 sex manual SUN had sold over 12 million copies. It was one of the big, SUN mainstream best-sellers that made the liberalisation of SUN sexual mores an accepted part of British life. But at the SUN end of his life, Comfort regretted that the success of this SUN one book had obscured his rich range of work in other areas SUN - from poetry to gerontology, broadcasting to anarchism. In SUN this programme, Matthew Sweet argues that by forgetting who SUN this man really was, we've also lost sight of the true SUN influences that shaped his blockbuster book. SUN SUN Matthew begins in the childhood garden where, aged 15, SUN Comfort blew off four fingers making fireworks. Far from SUN letting the accident get in his way, he resolved to become a SUN writer, publishing the first of his many books while still SUN in his teens. Comfort became a pacifist and, during the SUN Second World War, he not only refused to fight but conducted SUN a controversial campaign against the bombing of German SUN cities. He argued publicly with George Orwell about the SUN right thing to do if the Nazis invaded. And he was also SUN ruled out of broadcasting on the wartime BBC - though that SUN didn't stop him becomnig a prolific broadcaster in the SUN 1960s. SUN SUN After the war, he was a leading anti-nuclear activist, at SUN one stage briefly going to prison over a planned protest. SUN Yet all the time he was formulating the ideas that form the SUN basis of The Joy of Sex, which have their roots in his SUN anarchism. An anarchist, he argued, was not a 'bomb-thrower' SUN but someone who resisted the power of those in authority and SUN insisted instead on personal responsibility. His early SUN factual writing on sex began as a talk for fellow-anarchists SUN in the late 1940s. And all the while, Comfort was pursuing a SUN separate scientific career as a gerontologist, helping to SUN pioneer the study of old age. Tragically, his own last years SUN were anything but the 'Good Age' he envisaged for others. SUN Yet, Matthew argues, almost all Comfort's varied labours SUN seem to stem from his drive to struggle against limits - SUN from the loss of his fingers to the power of the wartime SUN state, from sexual repression to the prejudice against the SUN old. MON MON Respighi chose a different route - his work often infused MON with the music of a halcyon past.
