SAT SAT Witold Lutoslawski SAT In Music Matters this week we mark the centenary of Witold SAT Lutoslawski, who was born in Warsaw on the 25th January SAT 1913. Indisputably one of the major composers of the SAT twentieth century, he showed prodigious musical talent from SAT an early age. His composition studies ended at a politically SAT dark time for Poland, so his plans for further study were SAT replaced by military training, imprisonment by the Nazis, SAT and escape back to Warsaw, where he and his compatriot SAT Andrzej Panufnik played their own compositions and SAT transcriptions in cafes throughout the city. After the war, SAT the Stalinist regime banned his first symphony as SAT 'formalist', but he continued to compose and in 1958 his SAT Musique Funèbre established his international reputation. SAT SAT Tom Service travels to Warsaw and meets Lutoslawski's SAT step-son Marcin in the composer’s study at their family SAT home. Surrounded by the objects from a daily life of musical SAT work, Marcin describes a man of few words, someone who SAT regarded what he did with music as a separate journey of SAT exploration from the tumult of the rest of his life. At SAT Polish Radio, we find out how he accommodated the wishes of SAT the regime writing public music like patriotic jingles and SAT mass songs, while privately finding a compositional voice SAT that was truly, individually, his own. Grzegorz Michalski, SAT President of the Lutoslawski Society, reveals that though SAT supposedly apolitical the composer was involved in the SAT pro-democracy movement Solidarity towards the end of his SAT life, and suggests there really could be a link between the SAT intensity and violent contrasts of a piece like the Third SAT Symphony and Poland's recent history. SAT SAT Composer Steven Stucky, conductor Stanislaw Skrowaczewski, SAT and musicologist Nicholas Reyland discuss Lutoslawski’s SAT unique compositional voice and, in his own words, his SAT 'fishing for souls': searching for listeners who could hear SAT and who would be moved by the coherence, conflict, and SAT coruscating beauty of his music. Plus pianist Krystian SAT Zimerman, for whom Lutoslawski wrote his Piano Concerto, and SAT a young Polish composer on how Lutoslawski still inspires SAT the latest generation of musicians. When queens Elizabeth and Mary confront each SAT other, regal pride, years of hatred and mistrust (plus, of SAT course, love-triangle issues) ignite one of Donizetti's most SAT compelling scenes. 'Vil bastarda!' screams Mary Stuart at SAT her cousin once removed. And the opera is full of Bel Canto SAT plums leading up to Mary's final moments before her SAT execution. From Sputnik SAT to the International Space Station, radio enthusiasts with SAT homemade kit have been able tune into the distant sounds of SAT space and talk to those exploring it. Caroline Devine, found SAT space-sound artist, creates a composition from the ethereal SAT sounds of space and the space hams and sends Between the SAT Ears into orbit. SAT SAT Owen K. Garriott reveals why he was the first astronaut to SAT take amateur radio into space, opening up, for the very SAT first time, the channels of communication with ordinary SAT people back on Earth, a tradition still maintained on the SAT International Space Station to this day. SAT SAT And we hear newly released archive of US radio ham Roy SAT Welch, who immediately after Sputnik's launch rigged up a SAT makeshift station, looking up to the night sky as the SAT satellite's eerie beat found voice in his ramshackle SAT equipment. SAT SAT Radio brought us Neil Armstrong's first transmission from SAT the Moon and afforded ham operator, Larry Baysinger, the SAT chance to intercept the radio transmissions between the SAT astronauts. His recordings include the moment President SAT Nixon transmitted his message of congratulations to them. SAT SAT Interwoven with these are Caroline Devine's artful reworking SAT of other cosmic sounds picked up by ham receivers from SAT across the world to create an ethereal and magical journey, SAT a momentary re-ignition of the childlike wonder of space. It was jointly SAT commissioned by the BBC for the 2008 BBC Proms, with Radio SAT France and IRCAM, where Jonathan Harvey spent much time SAT working on new ways of integrating electronics and live SAT instruments. In this work, Harvey 'gives voice' to the SAT orchestra, using a special programme he developed in Paris. SUN SUN In ‘This be the Verse’ Philip Larkin squarely lays the blame SUN for being messed-up at the feet of mum and dad. But as a SUN writer, Alan Bennett pointed out that being messed-up by SUN your parents is ‘fine because then you’ve got something to SUN write about’. SUN SUN Edmund Gosse certainly proved the point in his SUN autobiographical ‘Father and Son’. At once worrying and SUN entertaining, it describes his Victorian upbringing at the SUN hands of his religious fundamentalist father. Oedipus could SUN reasonably claim to have been more messed up than most by SUN his parents but he certainly paid it back to them in spades. SUN It’s all very neatly summed-up here by XJ Kennedy and Tom SUN Lehrer. Another case of bad parenting is the Old SUN Testament’s Abraham who is willing to sacrifice his son, if SUN God tells him to. Roald Dahl’s Matilda and Stevie Smith both SUN need to escape their oppressive parents. SUN SUN The impact of children on their parents is seen in several SUN of the texts. A pregnant Anna Laetitia Barbauld can’t wait SUN for the joy and love she thinks her child will bring; SUN Coleridge’s newborn son provokes a similar ecstatic SUN response. But the realities of coping with young children SUN take Sylvia Plath and Rachel Cusk beyond the brink of SUN sanity. The Land of Dreams is ‘better far’ than the real SUN world for the little boy in Blake’s poem – a pitiful SUN exchange between a recently widowed father and his SUN motherless son. SUN SUN Kahil Gibran’s ‘On Children’ exhorts parents to let go of SUN their offspring and to acknowledge their separateness and SUN individuality; Robert Louis Stevenson’s ‘To Any Reader’ is SUN also about parental letting go. Forced to let go is Michael SUN Rosen, broken by grief after the death from meningitis of SUN his teenage son. SUN SUN Elderly parents and their adult offspring feature in two SUN texts: Elizabeth Jennings’ mother leaves her with pent up SUN tears of frustration, and Alan Bennett is witness to a SUN poignant exchange. SUN SUN There are happy parents and children here, too! In a SUN brilliant parody of Larkin, the parents in Adrian Mitchell’s SUN ‘This be the Worst’ ‘tuck you up’ and give endless love and SUN security. And in his ‘Essays’ Montaigne has nothing but SUN praise for his father’s educational methods and his way of SUN waking him up in the morning, both equally painless. SUN SUN Anyone who has had children will be aware of the countless SUN books there are on how to bring them up. One of the first, SUN from 1430, was Erasmus’s bestselling ‘On the Education of SUN Children’. This section deals with that perennial parental SUN headache: table manners. Dr Benjamin Spock’s 1946 ‘Baby & SUN Childcare’ begins the programme. With its exhortation to SUN parents to trust their instincts and common sense it, too, SUN became a bestseller (at over forty-five million copies, and SUN still counting). Many of you, I suspect, will have SUN experienced it in one way or the other! SUN SUN I have chosen music which seems to fit the feeling of the SUN texts, rather than for any more overt significance to the SUN programme’s theme. (Although as father to twenty children, SUN Bach surely merits inclusion on that score alone and SUN Jonathan Harvey’s great electroacoustic ‘mortuos plango, SUN vivos voco’ features the recorded voice of his son, SUN Dominic.) SUN SUN David Papp (producer) SUN SUN 19:45 Sunday Feature b01pyfr7 (Listen) SUN A Brief History of Being Cold SUN SUN Alexandra Harris presents a cultural history of the cold and SUN how it has shaped the British. With the help of poets and SUN writers including Simon Armitage, A.S. Byatt, Katherine SUN Swift and Adam Gopnik Alex looks at the way our literature SUN began with the cold in poems like 'The Seafarer' and 'The SUN Wanderer'. Making winter a synonym for age and endurance the SUN Anglo-Saxons wrote poetry mesmerised by the beauty and SUN horror of cold. In Yorkshire Simon Armitage discusses his SUN translation of Sir Gawain and the Green Knight imagining the SUN Pennines crossed by Gawain, hung with icicles on his hunt SUN for the Green Knight. And the gardener Katherine Swift takes SUN us on a winter tour of her garden in Shropshire. SUN SUN On the first real frosty day in winter Alexandra Harris SUN visited Katherine Swift, the historian who designed the SUN Dower House Garden at Morville in Shropshire, a garden which SUN aims to tell the history of English gardening in spaces like SUN the Knot Garden, the Victorian Rose Border, the Wild Garden SUN and the Snowdrop Walk. It was the composer MON Hasse who gave Jommelli his first big break, recommending MON him for a job in Venice, although Jommelli had already MON composed a number of operas by that time. He soon went on to MON be employed at the Papal Chapel in Rome, but this caused MON contempt among a number of his critics, saying he could not MON compose both sacred music and works for the stage. Jommelli MON was soon being sought after by Royal Courts in Lisbon, MON Mannheim and Stuttgart, and it was in Stuttgart that he MON worked for many years, composing some of his best operas. MON Overspending and decadence at the Stuttgart Court led to a MON number of artists leaving, including Jommelli, who returned MON to Italy where he remained until his death. At the pinnacle MON of his career, Jommelli was seen as one of the most well MON paid and influential composers in all Europe, whose MON orchestral writing in opera went on to influence the MON Mannheim Symphonists. MON MON Niccolo Jommelli was an Italian composer from the 18th MON century, who made significant developments in the world of MON opera. His early musical experiences were as a choir boy, MON and he continued to compose choral music throughout his MON life, including his Te Deum in D major. When his parents MON were able to afford to send him to different charitable MON conservatoires in Naples, he joined in the conservatoire MON performances of short operas and other music. This was his MON introduction to opera, at a time when the composer Hasse was MON dominating the scene in Naples. MON MON Opera was the main arena in which Jommelli made his mark, MON with works such as Don Trastullo. Jommelli became MON particularly famous for his use of the orchestra, freeing it MON from just being an accompaniment in opera. Spring Symphony is one of FRI Britten's largest and most opulent scores. It celebrates the FRI progress of winter into spring, culminating in a glorious FRI May-tide festival in the sun-drenched "Suffolk of Constable FRI and Gainsborugh". English poetry abounds, including settings FRI of Edmund Spenser, Thomas Nashe, Henry Vaughan, Milton and FRI others. Alongside the awakening of innocence there's also a FRI rude earthiness, the orchestra includes a rustic cow-horn, FRI and at the height of the finale, the massed children's FRI voices sing the thirteenth-century song "Sumer is icumen FRI in". FRI FRI Paul Lewis is internationally recognised as one of the FRI leading pianists of his generation. Since he became one of FRI the very first Radio 3 New Generation Artists, his awards FRI have included FRI the Royal Philharmonic Society's Instrumentalist of the FRI Year, the South Bank Show Classical Music Award and three FRI Gramophone awards. His recordings of the complete sonatas FRI were described by Gramophone as "one of the most highly FRI prized recording marathons of recent years" and in 2010 he FRI became the FRI first pianist to play all five concertos in a single season FRI at the BBC Proms. The greatest of all the concertos is the FRI Emperor, written in Vienna while Napoleon's guns thundered FRI around.
