For SAT two weeks each summer the hall was brimful for the SAT dramatisation of black British composer Samuel SAT Coleridge-Taylor's cantata trilogy: 'Hiawatha's Wedding SAT Feast', 'The Death of Minnehaha' and 'Hiawatha's Departure' SAT - collectively known as 'The Song of Hiawatha'. Hundreds of SAT members of the giant Royal Choral Society swamped the arena SAT (aka the tribal encampment) dressed in home-made native SAT American costumes. A vast backcloth, depicting mountains and SAT forests, obscured the Albert Hall's giant organ. Wigwams SAT invaded the stage, where the principal singers (many of the SAT best known British stars of the day) did their stuff. And SAT the bulk of the performances was directed by Dr Malcolm SAT Sargent, matinee idol in the making. SAT SAT At the hundredth anniversary of Coleridge-Taylor's death, SAT Andrew Green's Sumptuous Was The Feast' seeks out memories SAT from those who appeared in the Albert Hall productions and SAT those who attended them. Kath Marshall recalls the tribal SAT chants of an authentic Mohawk chief. Rosemary Woodhouse SAT crept onto the stage to solve the mystery of just how SAT Hiawatha's canoe drifted off-stage as it departed for the SAT Hereafter. SAT SAT But this is no mere trip down memory lane. Andrew Green SAT investigates the popularity of Longfellow's poem 'The Song SAT of Hiawatha' on both sides of the Atlantic. He examines how SAT Coleridge-Taylor was idolised by the black community in the SAT USA as a role model. And has Hiawatha obscured the SAT composer's wider output? SAT SAT 'Sumptuous Was The Feast' details other performances of SAT 'Hiawatha' from Scarborough to Melbourne, Australia...before SAT the craze died after the Second World War. But could hordes SAT of braves and squaws again fill the arena of the Albert SAT Hall? SAT SAT 13:00 The Early Music Show b038kyny (Listen) SAT Time Will Tell SAT SAT The singer Donald Greig has established a long career SAT performing with groups such as the Tallis Scholars and the SAT Orlando Consort, of which he is a founder member. Last year SAT he wrote his first novel - Time Will Tell - which recently SAT came out in paperback. It tells parallel stories set in the SAT 1990s world of modern early music performance, and in the SAT 16th century world of Franco-Flemish composers and musicians SAT including Josquin and Ockeghem. Donald Greig talks to SAT Catherine Bott about his novel and selects music featured in SAT the story. SAT Walter Lambe: Stella Caeli SAT Harrison Birtwistle: The Moth Requiem (UK premiere) SAT SAT BBC Singers SAT Nash Ensemble SAT Nicholas Kok (conductor) SAT SAT Nicholas Kok conducts the UK premiere of a recent work by SAT Sir Harrison Birtwistle - an elegy to twelve extinct species SAT of lepidoptera, commemorated through their Latin names which SAT are set for women's voices and ensemble of three harps and SAT alto flute. SAT Also in the programme, Gustav Holst's ravishing set of SAT Sanskrit words - for which he made his own translations from SAT the ancient texts - and one of the handful of compositions SAT left behind by his daughter, Imogen. Completing the mix, two SAT motets from that treasury of early Tudor sacred music SAT compiled as the Eton Choirbook - an extraordinary part of SAT the English musical history from a period whose music was a SAT source of fascination to all three of the other composers in SAT this afternoon's concert. SAT SAT 15:00 BBC Proms b038kyp0 (Listen) SAT 2013 Season, Prom 46, Prom 46 (part 1): Dvorak, Verdi, SAT Tchaikovsky & Strauss SAT SAT The CBSO under Andris Nelsons, live at the BBC Proms with SAT Kristine Opolais singing music by Verdi and Tchaikovsky. SAT SAT 15:40 Twenty Minutes b038kypk (Listen) SAT I Will Wear the Green Willow SAT SAT The second half of this afternoon's Prom concert begins with SAT the Willow Song from Otello. But it is not Verdi's, nor SAT Shakespeare's work. The song Desdemona sings is a folksong SAT of some antiquity. Its earliest appearance in print was SAT in1583, when Thomas Dallis included the tune in his Lute SAT Book. Willow, Willow is one of a number of folksongs that SAT Shakespeare knew well and incorporated into his plays. His SAT audience knew them, too, and understood their motifs and SAT symbols. Dr Fay Hield, ethnomusicologist and singer, SAT explores the way the willow as a badge of forsaken love SAT appears in traditional song ? remember Steeleye Span's hit SAT All Around My Hat? ? with quotations and musical SAT illustrations drawn from recordings and performed by her and SAT Jon Boden, fiddle player and singer with the hugely SAT successful folk big band, Bellowhead. MON MON The Devil is blue, pot-bellied, seated on a languorous green MON serpent, and is three-quarters through a hearty meal of MON haunch-of-human. Around him, men hang from gibbets or spew MON from the three tongues of red fire which are the rivers of MON Hell. For the medieval master Giotto, sin had a very real MON form. And for the faithful who came to worship with Enrico MON di Scrovegni in his chapel in Padua in northern Italy, the MON price of human error, was firmly rammed home by the vast MON glowing fresco that met their gaze as they left the chapel MON to go back out into the vice-filled medieval city. Scrovegni MON too had sin very firmly on his mind, because the chapel he MON built was his family penance for the sin of usury of which MON they stood accused. MON MON From primitive man, through the development of notions of MON indulgence, guilt and retribution, to the full force of MON medieval tormented souls and Dante's circles of Hell, Rev MON Richard Coles explores the ideas of sin and atonement. MON MON 'Sin' is a Christian concept, yet to what extent are the MON essential elements that constitute it - error and disorder - MON equally essential parts of other world religions, MON underpinning populations with very different belief systems MON in cultures from Asia to the Americas? MON MON In this first programme, Richard explores what exactly is MON meant by sin, and its origins in man's earliest ethical MON structures. And he travels to Italy to discuss some of the MON world's most graphic illustrations of the consequences of MON sin and wrongdoing - in Siena's depictions of the satanic MON figure of Tyranny and Giotto's extraordinary frescoed Last MON Judgement in Padua. Sibelius TUE moved to Berlin armed with a scholarship amounting to 2000 TUE Finnish marks, which was to pay for his tuition and TUE maintenance for a year. What the young Finn experienced on TUE his arrival was a quite severe culture shock. Back in TUE Helsinki he was already a figure of national importance, but TUE here in cosmopolitan Berlin, he was just one music student TUE among many, and the place was alive with them. In this city TUE where every musician he encountered seemed to be a virtuoso, TUE Sibelius was intimidated. He found himself, initially, TUE unable to compose at all. Taking over as conductor, TUE Daniel Harding performs music by the modern British composer TUE with whom Sir Colin was perhaps most associated - Michael TUE Tippett - including in his programme Tippett's wonderfully TUE vigorous, energetic and inventive Concerto for strings. This TUE year's Britten centenary is marked in his white-hot 1940 TUE song-cycle to words by the precocious teenage poet, TUE surrealist and libertine Arthur Rimbaud. A normal 'sitting' would make no sense. TUE So we follow Khan's story of capturing movement - how the TUE traditional expressions of Kathak dance were interpreted by TUE Fakhr in a contemporary way and made into a nine-panel sepia TUE portrait which captured the dancer in action. TUE The result is a portrait that is both deeply rooted in TUE tradition and yet vivid describes Khan in various moods and TUE attitudes. He was persuaded to move out of the THU city to a house in the countryside. But word had got around THU that he was in poor health and people who had funded him in THU the past turned their backs. Richard Coles continues his series exploring the THU idea of sin by tackling temptation and the way sin has THU become not merely an archaic idea in many contemporary THU societies but a positively attractive tool in the hands of THU commerce and advertising. He talks to senior figures in the THU advertising industry about the rise of the 'naughty but THU nice' school of commercial and explores the way Sin has been THU marginalised by modern secular societies while remaining THU central to others. Can the law operate entirely without THU reference to sin and 'in this world of sin' are children THU still being encouraged to establish values and judgements THU that owe their origins to religious ideas of sin and good.
