An interview with American SAT forte-pianist virtuoso and scholar Robert Levin about the SAT classical tradition of improvisation; also, Karl Amadeus SAT Hartmann, the man and his music, 50 years after his death; SAT and Hungarian music agent Balint Andras Varga talks to us SAT about his book of memoirs, including interviews with SAT composers, From Boulanger to Stockhausen. SAT SAT Robert Levin SAT SAT The American pianist and musicologist Robert Levin has SAT dedicated much of his life to studying and performing Mozart SAT and Beethoven in an authentic style - seeking to establish SAT how contemporary pianists during the classical period would SAT embellish the composers’ scores and improvise their own SAT cadenzas. Petroc Trelawny met Levin when he was in London SAT recently and discovered that although improvisation largely SAT disappeared from performances during the twentieth century SAT Levin believes it’s a skill today’s musicians (not only SAT pianists) must have - to keep music fresh and alive. SAT SAT From Boulanger to Stockhausen SAT SAT The Hungarian broadcaster and music publisher Balint Andras SAT Varga interviewed some of the greatest names in twentieth SAT century music – Alfred Brendel, Elisabeth Schwarzkopf, SAT Yehudi Menhuin, Stockhausen, Kurtag, Ligeti, Eugene Ormandy SAT and Nadia Boulanger – to name but a few. For the first time SAT nineteen of his interviews have been published in full in a SAT book called From Boulanger to Stockhausen. The book also SAT contains a personal memoir of Varga’s life growing up in a SAT Jewish family in Hungary during World War II and the early SAT years of Communist rule, before becoming General Promoter at SAT the prestigious publisher Univeral Edition in Vienna. SAT Petroc talks to Varga and then discusses the book with Morag SAT Grant, Professor of Music at Göttingen University in SAT Germany. SAT SAT Karl Amadeus Hartmann SAT SAT Thursday 5th December marks the 50th anniversary of the SAT death of the German composer Karl Amadeus Hartmann, once SAT described as ‘the most significant twentieth century SAT composer whose music you barely know’. Hartmann saw culture SAT and politics as being inseparable and in the 1920s and 30s SAT he wrote works that raged against capitalism and the looming SAT evil of National Socialism. He remained in Germany during SAT the Second World War and continued to compose in private but SAT refused to allow his works to be performed. In 1946, SAT deemed ideologically sound by the occupying US Military, he SAT set up Musica Viva - a concert series championing new music, SAT that continues in Munich to this day and has been copied SAT around the world. Petroc examines Hartmann’s times and SAT legacy with the composer John McCabe, the conductor Ingo SAT Metzmacher and Andreas Herm Baumgartner, conductor and SAT Artistic Director of the “Karl Amadeus Hartmann Year 2013” SAT in Germany. SUN SUN In this warm and funny interview, Mvula talks to Michael SUN Berkeley about her musical upbringing and about how church SUN music, piano and violin lessons and performances for her SUN aunt's a cappella group, Black Voices, initially went hand SUN in hand with a crippling stage fright. At ten, she was so SUN scared of performing that she howled on stage when the SUN applause started and had to be rescued by her parents. She SUN also talks about how as a student she began going to hear SUN English choral music, but she had an ulterior motive: she SUN fancied one of her fellow-students, a classical baritone, so SUN she went to see him every time she could. It worked, they're SUN now married; and she fell in love with choral composers like SUN Eric Whitacre at the same time. And Laura reveals how at SUN first she didn't quite at appreciate her big break from SUN producer Steve Brown (she was too busy eating a banana). SUN SUN Following her appearance at this summer's Urban Prom, Laura SUN Mvula explains why she doesn't believe in separating music SUN into genres and why she remains a passionate listener to - SUN and advocate for - classical music. SUN SUN In this programme she reveals how she still finds SUN inspiration in classical composers for her own work. She SUN plays a piece of Debussy and talks about how it inspired one SUN of her own songs, 'Make Me Lovely'; she also chooses Elgar, SUN Michael Tippett, William Walton, and 'Lush and Bluesy', a SUN string piece by her teacher at the Conservatoire, Joe SUN Cutler. Other musical choices include William Walton, Nina SUN Simone and Miles Davis. SUN SUN If you think of a megalomaniac villain's lair, it's almost SUN certain your imagination will be fuelled by the creations of SUN Sir Ken Adam. SUN SUN Matthew Sweet meets the game-changing film designer. Most SUN famous for designing Bond films and Dr. Strangelove, the SUN ambition of Ken Adam's vision is unrivalled. He created Dr SUN No's underwater hideout, Goldfinger's Rumpus Room and SUN Blofeld's volcano lair, and a Cabinet War Room for Dr SUN Strangelove so persuasive and convincing that - the SUN apocryphal story goes - when Ronald Reagan entered the White SUN House he asked to see it. SUN SUN Matthew hears Ken Adam's story from the man himself. It's an SUN extraordinary one: as a boy in Berlin he witnessed the SUN smoking ruins of the Reichstag on his way to school; as a SUN young man he was one of only two Germans to fly a fighter SUN jet for the RAF over his own homeland. And Matthew explores SUN how much Ken Adam - born Klaus Hugo Adam 92 years ago - SUN shaped our sense of what a glamorous urban environment SUN should look like. SUN SUN Matthew Sweet explores how Ken Adam's playful take on SUN modernism has influenced not just film but also the real SUN world, feeding the imagination of a generation of architects SUN and changing our built environment. THU THU Mascagni found himself in an impossible situation in 1920s THU Italy, struggling to accommodate himself with the opposed THU political forces battling it out. He had shown solidarity THU with striking workers in his native Livorno during the years THU of revolutionary ferment following the First World War, so THU was initially labelled as a Bolshevik by the Fascist regime THU in power from 1922. Al-Farabi studied and taught amongst the Christians of FRI the Baghdad school, and later went to Syria and Egypt, dying FRI in the middle of the 10th century in Damascus. His writings FRI reflect the agenda of the Baghdad school: he wrote FRI commentaries on Aristotle, concentrating on the logical FRI works so prized by the school founder Matta. But Farabi FRI seems to have had a more ambitious aim than his colleagues FRI did. He wanted not just to elucidate Aristotle, or to press FRI philosophical ideas into the service of religion but to FRI integrate all branches of philosophy into a single, FRI systematic theory.
