SUN Varese Sarabande VSD5641 SUN SUN 18:45 Sunday Feature b03z9jr4 (Listen) SUN Billy - The Other Lloyd Webber SUN SUN William Lloyd Webber, OBE, was a virtuoso organist, gifted SUN teacher and accomplished administrator. But above all else SUN he wanted to be a composer, and at the end of his life he SUN was to rue missed opportunities at the same time as he saw SUN his two sons - composer Andrew and 'cellist Julian - fulfil SUN their own musical dreams. SUN SUN In this programme marking the centenary of William Lloyd SUN Webber's birth, writer and broadcaster Andrew Green explores SUN why the dream shattered - but also re-examines the SUN passionate, romantic music Lloyd Webber left behind. SUN SUN William Lloyd Webber was a working-class boy who made good, SUN fired by the musical enthusiasms of his father - William Sr SUN was a plumber with a love of the organ. William Jr was a SUN nationally known organist by his early teens. The Royal SUN College of Music snapped him up as a teacher of music theory SUN as soon as his student years ended. But in 1948 he was to SUN give up one of London's most prestigious organist posts, at SUN All Saints, Margaret Street, to concentrate on composing. SUN SUN Not much more than ten years later, the ambition was in SUN tatters. Lloyd Webber wrote plenty of music, but his shy, SUN over-sensitive nature meant he so feared critics would SUN ridicule his romantic style that he all but abandoned SUN composing. SUN SUN With the help of such contributors as Andrew and Julian SUN Lloyd Webber, Sir Tim Rice and pianist John Lill, Andrew SUN Green unravels a complex character whose story is a mirror SUN to fashions in 20th-century music. That story was cruelly SUN cut short in 1982 just as William Lloyd Webber was SUN re-discovering his voice, inspired by a late love. SUN SUN Lloyd Webber's music perfectly illustrates his story, from SUN the introverted Fantasy Trio to the abandoned orchestral SUN tone poem, Aurora; from brilliant organ works to songs SUN brimming over with romantic ardour. Beginning with THU its famous toccata, Monteverdi's L'Orfeo tells the legend of THU Orpheus, who "held the wild beasts spellbound with his THU song," but who descends to Hades in a fruitless attempt to THU bring his dead bride Eurydice back to the living world. The THU drama moves between the pastoral world of the fields of THU Thrace and the Underworld as Monteverdi explores every THU musical device available to a composer standing on the cusp THU of the Renaissance and the Baroque to paint one of the THU richest and most beautiful tapestries in all music. FRI FRI 'Commonwealth Connections' is a BBC Radio 3 landmark 26-part FRI weekly series leading up to the Commonwealth Games in July, FRI featuring music from each of the 53 member states, FRI reflecting the range of music and culture across the whole FRI organisation. FRI FRI Music feature from Rwanda: FRI This year marks the 20th anniversary of the Rwandan FRI genocide, which was triggered by the assissnation of the FRI Rwandan President on April 6th 1994, and continued for 100 FRI days, with an estimated death toll of more than half a FRI million. Since then Rwanda has seen a remarkable FRI transformation, and the capital Kigali is now a prosperous FRI and thriving capital. Music has played its part in that FRI transformation, and we hear first from Sophie Nzayisenga, FRI who sings and plays the traditional stringed instrument, the FRI inanga. She lost brothers and sisters in the conflict, FRI surviving by hiding in the bush with her father for the FRI hundred days. She is now involved in Rwanda's Cultural FRI Upgrading Initiative, which seeks to promote harmony through FRI traditional music. There is also a session with Gakondo, a FRI traditional group which plays regular concerts at the Hotel FRI Milles Collines, well known around the world as the former FRI UN hotel which became a refuge during the genocide. FRI FRI Heritage Track: Pakistan FRI Kiran Khan is one of Pakistan's first international female FRI swimmers. She talks about the responsibilities and pressures FRI of being a media celebrity and a role-model for other women, FRI and the difficulties of pursuing her chosen sport in a FRI Muslim country. Her uplifting music choice, Jazba-e-Junoon, FRI to himmat na haar by Ali Azmat, reflects the support she's FRI received from her family, particularly her father, who FRI always dreamed that his daughter should fulfil her dreams FRI and become an inspiration to others. FRI FRI Session with Mayra Andrade: FRI She was born in Cuba, but her parents were from Cape Verde, FRI and her main musical influences have always been the songs FRI of these islands. Although she has lived in Paris in recent FRI years, most of her songs are in Cape Verde's local Crioulo FRI language. Her new album 'Lovely Difficult' has already been FRI nominated for a French Victoires de la Musique Award. FRI
