While searching for a SAT creative and fun way to teach his 3-year-old son, Nick SAT Baragwanath discovered a forgotten history of music SAT completely different from the usual dull routine of practice SAT and graded exams. In the 18th century, the conservatoires SAT (orphanages) of Naples developed an education system that SAT enabled destitute children to become professional-level SAT composers and performers by their early teens. Almost every SAT famous musician of the time was trained in this way, in what SAT is an astonishing untold rags-to-riches story. Airbrushed SAT from history by Romantic writers, who valued the idea of SAT spontaneous genius above the reality of craft training, the SAT real story of classical music is finally coming to light. SAT And modern conservatoires, such as the Royal Academy of SAT Music, are taking notice. Could this revival transform the SAT way we teach children music? SAT SAT The 18th century is widely regarded as a golden age for SAT European music, producing Bach, Handel, Haydn, Mozart and SAT Beethoven. But it is often forgotten that professional SAT music-making was dominated by Italians, especially those SAT trained at one of the Neapolitan orphanage-conservatories. SAT How many music lovers today could name even one of the 'big SAT four' put forward by Charles Burney in 1770: Jommelli, SAT Galuppi, Piccinni and Sacchini? Not to mention others such SAT as Pergolesi, Scarlatti, Paisiello, Cimarosa, etc. SAT SAT They stand witness to an incredible rags-to-riches story, SAT testament to the egalitarian ideals of the enlightenment. SAT SAT Poverty, disease and prostitution were rife in 18th-century SAT Naples, resulting in a large number of abandoned children. SAT Conservatories took them in and taught them a lucrative SAT trade: music. Discipline was a constant problem, and the SAT conservatories were policed by special priests chosen for SAT their burliness. But they developed an education system SAT which devolved on creativity, enabling disadvantaged SAT children to compose immaculate operas and symphonies by SAT their early teens. Through what was probably the most SAT effective music education system ever devised, poor children SAT could become famous artists, rubbing shoulders with princes SAT and the super-rich. The penniless 17-year-old Haydn had the SAT good fortune to learn this system from Neapolitan maestro SAT Nicola Porpora (teacher of Farinelli), in return for SAT cleaning his boots. SAT SAT Recently uncovered by scholars, 18th-century methods are SAT gaining currency in a modern system often criticised for SAT stifling individualism. Nicholas Baragwanath has started to SAT train his 3-year-old son, Isaac, in the old Neapolitan way. SAT He travels to Naples to uncover the forgotten story of the SAT musicians who were really famous during the 18th century and SAT to find out how they became so skilled in such a short time. SAT Their methods involved giving children simple musical games SAT and puzzles to play with, rather than teaching them how to SAT read a score 'correctly'. He visits an 8-year-old girl in SAT Surrey who has already been trained through these methods SAT and who has composed critically acclaimed operas and string SAT quartets. He investigates what this might mean for modern SAT music education by speaking with educators from the UK, USA, SAT Italy, and Switzerland. SUN SUN Producer's Note SUN SUN Most of us spend most of our lives in enclosed in rooms of SUN one sort or another. If they weren’t there we would create SUN them, as nomads do with tents or children do with dens. Of SUN course we need them for protection and warmth but they also SUN have dedicated functions in our lives – special places to do SUN special things. SUN SUN The hall is usually the first room we come to in a building SUN and so is often designed to impress. The Hall of the SUN Mountain King, given musical form in Grieg’s suite for Peer SUN Gynt, must have inspired awe in the eponymous protagonist of SUN Ibsen’s play who dreams of visiting the troll king. Michael SUN William Balfe gives us a different take on fantasising about SUN the grandeur of imposing buildings with the poignant and SUN aspirational air I Dreamt I Dwelt in Marble Halls from The SUN Bohemian Girl. SUN SUN Snuggling between them, John Donne addresses the day from a SUN more intimate room; the bedroom shared with a lover, and SUN compares the world inside the walls with the one without. SUN SUN In her 1928 lectures at the Cambridge women's colleges, SUN Girton and Newnham, Virginia Woolf sees ‘a room of her own’ SUN as a prerequisite for a woman to be able to write fiction SUN and the idea of the room as an emblem of self-determination SUN becomes a feminist cultural marker. That rooms can be seen SUN as social symbols is explored by Sylvia Townsend Warner who SUN views the transformation of a culture and an era exemplified SUN in the rooms of stately homes, their furnishings and SUN contents. SUN SUN The Duke Ellington Orchestra’s reiteration of the popular SUN standard Rose Room recalls another changing society, the SUN fleeting ‘jazz age’. This tune would have provided a SUN soundtrack for the silent movie stars dancing in that very SUN room at the St Francis Hotel in San Francisco, and was SUN surely played by the house band led by the songwriter, Al SUN Hickman. SUN SUN Hickman must have considered the acoustics of the room when SUN he composed the melody in 1917. Eighty years earlier Hector SUN Berlioz too had a specific room in the mind when, to SUN commemorate the dead of the 1830 Revolution, he wrote his SUN Requiem, or Messe des Morts. It was the chapel of Les SUN Invalides in Paris where the work was first performed with SUN more than 400 musicians exploiting to full effect the sound SUN of the room in an invocation of Judgment Day. This version, SUN with Leonard Bernstein conducting, was recorded at the same SUN venue in 1975. SUN SUN In childhood, rooms are our world within a world - none more SUN so than the one Anne Frank and her group lived in during the SUN Nazi occupation of Amsterdam. Andrew Motion’s poem visits SUN the concealed annexe where she hid in fear for two years. SUN But teenage rooms are often places not of enforced but SUN voluntary retreat. Brian Wilson of the Beach Boys wrote In SUN My Room and said "I had a room, and I thought of it as my SUN kingdom. And I wrote that song, very definitely, that you're SUN not afraid when you're in your room.” In it he taught his SUN brothers to sing harmony. SUN SUN Nowadays childhood rooms are likely to be dominated by SUN electronic equipment which, in Roald Dahl’s day, meant the SUN television - something he didn’t approve of at all. It would SUN have been interesting to see what he would have written SUN about computer games. For Edward Elgar dolls embody the SUN notion of childhood play and his Nursery Suite contains SUN three movements about dolls as well as awakening and SUN dreaming sections expressing the happiness of a child’s SUN room. SUN SUN Nevertheless rooms can seem like prisons to children longing SUN to go out and play although in DH Lawrence’s poem Last SUN Lesson of the Afternoon it is the teacher who can’t wait to SUN escape the classroom. SUN SUN Illness can confine us to our rooms too. Beethoven was SUN recovering from a serious intestinal complaint in 1825 and SUN it was while he was on a Spartan diet and still coughing up SUN blood that he composed his string quartet Op 132. The dry SUN scratchiness of the third movement speaks of sickness. SUN Eventually he did recover as the other movements attest. It SUN is more difficult to gauge the attitude to her childhood SUN sickroom of the American poet Louise Glück, anorexic as an SUN adolescent. She seems to find a strange comfort in lying ill SUN in bed. SUN SUN Aaron Copland’s 1930s composition El Salón México is SUN subtitled ‘A Popular Type Dance Hall in Mexico City’ and SUN conjures up the Latin flavours of the room, in the same vein SUN but with a completely different approach from Hickman’s SUN musical depiction of the Rose Room. SUN SUN It is Italian flavours that Elizabeth David wanted to SUN conjure up for the British palate of the early fifties, SUN innocent of Mediterranean food. She aimed to introduce us to SUN the Italian kitchen. In Italy and France the name of the SUN room, cucina or cuisine, is a metonym for not just the SUN activity that takes place there but a whole gastronomic way SUN of life. Leonard Bernstein tries the same thing musically SUN with his setting of four recipes by Emile Dumont, a sort of SUN nineteenth century Raymond Blanc, who published La Bonne SUN Cuisine Française, a manual for the ‘mistress of the house’. SUN SUN The idea of sharing rooms is something we are always SUN ambivalent about – they are enclosures in a physical sense SUN but also in a mental or emotional way and to let others in SUN is either an invasion or a sharing of privacy, depending on SUN your point of view. Philip Larkin displays his distaste for SUN the legacy of Mr Bleaney, the previous occupant of his SUN lonely room and, already in the 1950s, seems to be with SUN Roald Dahl on televisions. Dylan Thomas leaves us to guess SUN whether the stranger in his room is literally there or SUN whether something else is occupying the inner room of the SUN mind. SUN SUN The Rothko Chapel was created by the painter Mark Rothko in SUN 1971 as a ‘spiritual environment’, an octagonal room in SUN which to share contemplation. Morton Feldman’s piece of the SUN same name was written to be performed in the room the year SUN after it opened. He wrote that he wanted the sound to SUN permeate the room in the same way that Rothko’s paint went SUN right to the edge of the canvas. “The sound is closer, more SUN physically with you than in a concert hall.” SUN SUN The same might be said of Haydn’s Piano Trios. Haydn was a SUN founding father of classical chamber music where the drier SUN acoustic of a smaller room enabled faster, more complicated, SUN conversational playing than a more reverberant auditorium SUN would allow. You can get an idea of how it might have SUN sounded in a palace chamber on this recording of Trio No 39 SUN in G Major which uses a fortepiano from the 1790s, for which SUN Haydn wrote, the forerunner of the modern grand piano. SUN SUN Apart from the church, the music chamber and the concert SUN hall another room where music was heard historically was the SUN ballroom. The importance of finding the right one is SUN illustrated in the extract from Jane Austen’s Emma. The SUN ballroom at the Crown was clearly a little more than a room SUN above a pub but whether it would have been big enough for SUN waltzing is unclear. Emma was published in 1815 around about SUN the time the modern waltz made its first appearance in SUN Britain but it might well have been too racy for Emma SUN Woodhouse and her friends. However by the time Johann SUN Strauss II wrote the Wine Women and Song Waltz in 1869 it SUN had become the height of fashion and was to be a staple of SUN the style known as ‘ballroom’ dancing - another example of SUN the room defining the activity – to the point that two SUN hundred years later it is essential to popular Saturday SUN evening television on Strictly Come Dancing. One wonders SUN what Dahl and Larkin would have made of that. SUN At the centre of the programme is a concerto commissioned by SUN the Cleveland Orchestra for its principal flautist Joshua SUN Smith. MON Chabrier owned a remarkable collection of impressionist MON paintings including several by Manet, who produced the best MON known portrait of the composer. MON MON Emmanuel Chabrier's life slots into a fascinating point in MON French musical history. When he was born in 1841, Berlioz MON was already thirty-eight and famous, Saint-Saëns was six, MON while the rising stars of the future, Massenet and Fauré, MON were not yet born. Despite Wagner's dominance, and indeed MON Chabrier's own reverence for the German composer, Chabrier's MON music retains a staunchly Gallic individuality, with critics MON subsequently paying tribute to him as a "direct forerunner MON of the modern school." The reason for this may well relate, MON at least in part, to his studies. Chabrier was largely MON self-taught, and although he was better educated than most MON musical amateurs, he never followed the accepted route into MON the Paris Conservatoire or a similar institute. He trained MON first in law, only taking up full time composition in his MON thirties. MON MON In the first of the series, Donald Macleod traces Chabrier's MON roots from a childhood spent in provincial Auvergne to the MON salons of Paris, where his engaging personality charmed all MON the leading artists of the day, eventually leading to MON success with a sparkling confection for stage, l'Étoile. WED WED 12:00 Composer of the Week b04vdswj (Listen) WED Emmanuel Chabrier (1841-1894), The Apprentice WED WED The Chabriers take a trip to Spain where the dances and WED rhythms fascinate Emmanuel, inspiring him to write his WED biggest ever hit, Espana. WED WED Chabrier must surely be one of the most likeable fellows to WED have graced WED this earth. It seems no-one had a bad word to say about him. WED His wide circle of friends included all the leading WED musicians, writers, poets and painters of the day. Chabrier WED owned a remarkable collection of impressionist paintings WED including several by Manet, who produced the best known WED portrait of the composer. WED WED Emmanuel Chabrier's life slots into a fascinating point in WED French musical history. When he was born in 1841, Berlioz WED was already thirty-eight and famous, Saint-Saëns was six, WED while the rising stars of the future, Massenet and Fauré, WED were not yet born. Despite Wagner's dominance, and indeed WED Chabrier's own reverence for the German composer, Chabrier's WED music retains a staunchly Gallic individuality, with critics WED subsequently paying tribute to him as a "direct forerunner WED of the modern school." The reason for this may well relate, WED at least in part, to his studies. Chabrier was largely WED self-taught, and although he was better educated than most WED musical amateurs, he never followed the accepted route into WED the Paris Conservatoire or a similar institute. He trained WED first in law, only taking up full time composition in his WED thirties. WED WED The Chabriers' holiday in Spain is vividly documented in WED Emmanuel Chabrier's delighted correspondence with all his WED friends back home in Paris. Today Donald Macleod dips into WED those letters for an insight into the sights and experiences WED that inspired Chabrier to produce a uniquely Gallic take on WED Spanish rhythms, much loved everywhere except Spain! WED WED Brahms: WED Tragic Overture WED Jörg Widmann: Teufel Amor (UK premiere) WED Brahms: Symphony No. 2 in D major, Op. 73 WED WED Cleveland Orchestra WED Franz Welser-Möst (conductor) WED WED The Cleveland Orchestra begins its second concert at the BBC WED Proms featuring music by Brahms and Jörg Widmann with WED Brahms's Tragic Overture, a work which lives up to its name WED with turbulent intensity. This year's cycle of Brahms WED symphonies wass brought to a conclusion with a performance WED of the sunny Second. The composer was in unusually high WED spirits while composing it, joking with his publisher, 'I WED have never written anything so sad'. The result, in fact, WED sets aside Brahms's habitual seriousness and dramatic WED tensions in an open-hearted score of great warmth and WED appeal. In between these two works is young German Jörg WED Widmann's Teufel Amor - a musical account of the WED contradictions, tensions and resolutions of love, inspired WED by Schiller's lost poem. WED WED Concert originally broadcast 08/09/2014. WED WED 20:45 The Essay b04mbljb (Listen) WED World War I Round the World, London - Shell Shock and the WED Shock of Shells WED WED One hundred years ago the First World War set the course for WED the modern world: for the countries that took part nothing WED would be the same again. THU Haris Pasovic lived through the Siege of Sarajevo and was THU the producer of Susan Sontag's legendary 1993 'Waiting for THU Godot', produced in the city during the war. His THU essay 'Divine Uncertainty' is a personal take the war in THU Bosnia and the First World War. In this essay, recorded at THU the Sarajevo Theatre of War, Haris explains how he sees THU politics as a force woefully out of step with science and THU playfully suggests that a theory of 'political relativity' THU is needed in which cultural identity is cushioned by THU tolerance. FRI FRI Chabrier must surely be one of the most likeable fellows to FRI have graced FRI this earth. It seems no-one had a bad word to say about him. FRI His wide circle of friends included all the leading FRI musicians, writers, poets and painters of the day. Chabrier FRI owned a remarkable collection of impressionist paintings FRI including several by Manet, who produced the best known FRI portrait of the composer. FRI FRI Emmanuel Chabrier's life slots into a fascinating point in FRI French musical history. When he was born in 1841, Berlioz FRI was already thirty-eight and famous, Saint-Saëns was six, FRI while the rising stars of the future, Massenet and Fauré, FRI were not yet born. Despite Wagner's dominance, and indeed FRI Chabrier's own reverence for the German composer, Chabrier's FRI music retains a staunchly Gallic individuality, with critics FRI subsequently paying tribute to him as a "direct forerunner FRI of the modern school." The reason for this may well relate, FRI at least in part, to his studies. Chabrier was largely FRI self-taught, and although he was better educated than most FRI musical amateurs, he never followed the accepted route into FRI the Paris Conservatoire or a similar institute. He trained FRI first in law, only taking up full time composition in his FRI thirties. FRI FRI Today Donald Macleod looks at Chabrier's final comic opera, FRI a work in which the riches and innovation of the music FRI managed to overcome the deficiencies of a confusing plot and FRI weak libretto.
