SUN SUN 12:00 Private Passions b060bprp (Listen) SUN Rachel Nicholson SUN SUN Rachel Nicholson has an extraordinary artistic background: SUN her mother was Barbara Hepworth, her father Ben Nicholson. SUN Yet despite, perhaps because of, the burden of that SUN parentage, she herself did not begin to paint until she was SUN in her forties. Now in her early eighties, she's established SUN a reputation as a painter of rhythmically beautiful SUN landscapes and still lifes; her work influenced perhaps by SUN her father's sense of space and colour, but very much her SUN own. SUN SUN She paints every day in an attic studio in North London; for SUN Private Passions she invited Michael Berkeley to her studio SUN and gave a rare interview, revealing the central role music SUN has played for her, right from earliest childhood. Rachel SUN Nicholson has synaesthesia, which means that when she SUN listens to music, she sees colours; so music provides SUN inspiration when she's stuck, or searching for a new colour SUN palette. She remembers sitting on the stairs listening to SUN the music drifting from her mother's studio, but it was no SUN ordinary childhood: Rachel was a triplet, and the babies SUN were sent to a nursing college to be looked after as SUN infants. Only later did she return home with a nanny from SUN the college, and then she was sent away again to school. She SUN was so excited when she first heard Bach's B Minor Mass at SUN Dartington Hall School that she spent all her pocket money SUN going to every performance. Other music choices include SUN Haydn, Scarlatti, Handel, Schubert, Mozart, John Adams, and SUN Priaulx Rainier - a composer who was a close friend of SUN Barbara Hepworth's, and whom Rachel Nicholson remembers SUN well. SUN SUN Mike Leigh's operatic directorial debut took place at ENO SUN this year with his production of Gilbert and Sullivan's "The SUN Pirates of Penzance", which will be broadcast tomorrow on SUN BBC Radio 3. SUN SUN Leigh once berated directors for failing to understand G&S, SUN resulting in "boring, bland, sentimental, self-conscious, SUN often gratuitously camp productions, which entirely miss SUN their point". So what is their point, and how should they be SUN performed in the 21st century? SUN SUN The tradition of Gilbert and Sullivan performance is still SUN alive and kicking both in the UK and internationally. SUN University G&S societies enjoy healthy membership, local SUN amateur companies still exist, and there is a dedicated SUN international festival in Harrogate. SUN SUN But it can be argued that what keeps G&S alive is also what SUN kills it. Cosy, comfortable urbanity, middle-brow high SUN jinks, the tradition-bound productions of D'Oyly Carte, and SUN the reluctance of the British musical establishment to take SUN it all seriously. SUN Martin Handley, who himself has conducted many productions, SUN examines the paradox that is the continuing survival of G&S. SUN SUN He speaks to directors Mike Leigh, who wants to let the SUN operettas speak for themselves, Sir Jonathan Miller, whose SUN famous production of The Mikado continues to be revived 32 SUN years on, and young director Sasha Regan, whose all-male SUN productions are bringing the works to a whole new audience. SUN Martin also speaks to singers Barry Clark, who speaks of the SUN dying days of the old D'Oyly Carte Company, Dame Felicity SUN Palmer, who has taken on several of the problematic "older SUN woman" roles, and also younger singers who haven't grown up SUN with the tradition. He also hears from the amateur scene, SUN and speaks to G&S scholars Dr Ian Bradley and Dr Carolyn SUN Williams who reflect on the social landscape of G&S SUN participation and fandom, the male-dominated world of the SUN lyric-quoting obsessive and the rather conflicted female SUN view - great fun to perform but what of the inherent SUN Gilbertian misogyny and the somewhat cardboard cut-out SUN emotional style? SUN SUN This is an exploration of the state of G&S in the cultural SUN landscape of 2015: its tenacious survival, the various SUN routes it takes to get to the stage, both amateur and SUN professional, and its unexpected renaissance in Universities SUN and colleges, where it is blossoming and where much of its SUN future may lie. Is the occasional professional production SUN enough to keep it going, and to maintain or revive cultural SUN credibility, or is G&S more likely to live on the SUN traditional high Victorian style in the amateur world, in SUN the UK at least? SUN SUN In July 1944, with the most disastrous war in history in its SUN death-throes, a secret meeting took place in a hotel deep in SUN the forests of New Hampshire. Bankers and economists from SUN over forty nations met to draw up a settlement to save the SUN world economy and secure the peace. Everything depended on SUN two men - John Maynard Keynes and Harry Dexter White. SUN SUN Seen through the eyes of the main participants (including SUN the eccentric Lady Keynes) this dive into big money and high SUN politics takes Bretton Woods as a lens to reflect on one of SUN the most burning issues of our times. Out of this meeting SUN emerged two powerful institutions, the International SUN Monetary Fund and the World Bank. SUN SUN The international gold standard had come to grief in the SUN Depression of the 1930s. A succession of countries, led by SUN Britain, detached their currencies from gold rather than be SUN forced by a fixed exchange-rate to cut demand and increase SUN unemployment. By the summer of 1941, Britain was in debt not SUN just to the United States but to the countries playing host SUN to her armies, such as India and Egypt. Without currency SUN controls, Britain was bankrupt. John Maynard Keynes SUN envisaged a supernational bank in which trading accounts SUN would be settled in bank money that would be available to SUN members as an overdraft facility according to their share of SUN world trade. Behind it would stand the greatest creditor SUN nation, the United States. Over just three weeks in July SUN 1944, the United Nations Monetary and Financial Conference, SUN better known from the Mount Washington Hotel's railway stop SUN as the Bretton Woods conference, established a currency SUN regime and the IMF and the World Bank. SUN SUN A Cast Iron production for BBC Radio 3. The THU Quartet open with three Bach organ chorale preludes shifted THU to strings, before Carolyn joins them in the world premiere THU of Brooklyn-born John Musto's 'Another Place'. After the THU interval comes Webern's Slow Movement (Langsamer Satz) with THU its lush harmonies that marked a crossroads for the composer THU before he embraced more atonal sounds. Schoenberg's String THU Quartet No.2 of 1908 is innovative in just about every way, THU not least because it requires a soprano in the final two THU movements, which set texts by Stefan George.
