MON MON 12:00 Composer of the Week b069x6kc (Listen) MON Dmitry Shostakovich (1906-1975), Turning Inward MON MON This week, Donald Macleod views Shostakovich through the MON prism of his string quartets. Today, the composer withdraws MON from the risky world of public art to the inward sphere of MON the quartet. MON MON Shostakovich came relatively late to the string quartet; he MON wrote his first in the year following the 5th Symphony, MON which had marked his rehabilitation after the furore whipped MON up by Stalin over the opera Lady Macbeth of the Mtsensk MON District - "Muddle instead of music", screamed Pravda - and MON the suppression of his angular, epically-proportioned 4th MON Symphony. A bad review from the Soviet state's official MON mouthpiece wasn't just an inconvenience; if you were MON considered guilty of 'formalism', or of not reflecting 'the MON life of the people', you could be whisked away in the dead MON of night and never seen again - or not for a long time, MON anyway. So after what must have been a truly terrifying MON period for Shostakovich, it's not particularly surprising, MON even once the 5th Symphony had been pronounced an official MON success, that he should have decided to take a holiday from MON the limelight and immerse himself in the rarified world of MON the string quartet - beyond the interest and under the radar MON of Soviet officialdom. Shostakovich's 1st String Quartet is MON a charming if relatively unambitious work, described by the MON composer as "joyful, merry, lyrical" and even "springlike", MON though a vein of melancholy winds its way through the first MON three movements. The story goes that Shostakovich's Piano MON Quintet started life as a second string quartet - with the MON composer adding a piano part when he realized that touring MON with it would allow him to travel! TUE TUE Ravel TUE String Quartet TUE Lindsay String Quartet. TUE TUE 12:00 Composer of the Week b069x958 (Listen) TUE Dmitry Shostakovich (1906-1975), Music for the Bottom Drawer TUE TUE Donald Macleod views Shostakovich through the prism of his TUE string quartets. Today, music for two pianos; music in TUE praise of Stalin; and a quartet so subversive it had to be TUE banned. TUE TUE Shostakovich's father died young, so at 16, to help make TUE ends meet, the aspiring composer had to take a job as a TUE cinema pianist. As it turned out, this thankless drudgery TUE stood him in good stead for his later work writing music for TUE film; he was prolific, producing almost 40 scores in as many TUE years. His music for The Fall of Berlin, a lavishly-funded TUE Mosfilm epic, is by turns evocative and highly dramatic. If TUE only the film - a self-styled 'artistic documentary' that TUE rewrites the history of the Second World War with Stalin as TUE the central character - lived up to the quality of the TUE music! The same year he made that musical contribution to TUE Stalin's burgeoning cult of personality, he also composed TUE one of his most intensely beautiful string quartets, the 4th TUE - Haydnesque in its clarity of expression and suffused with TUE the spirit of Jewish folk music. Shostakovich's musical TUE timing was faultless but his political timing was not so TUE good. At that time the régime was engaged in a crackdown on TUE the Jews - or "unpatriotic, rootless cosmopolitans", as TUE Pravda called them - and the head of the Music Division of TUE the Committee for Artistic Affairs determined that the new TUE quartet should be consigned for the time being to the TUE composer's bottom drawer, where it remained till after the TUE Glorious Leader's death. Around the time of the 4th TUE Quartet's eventual première, Shostakovich wrote his TUE Concertino for two pianos, for his 16-year-old son Maxim and TUE a classmate to play. It's a simple but brilliantly effective TUE little piece whose mock-serious opening soon gives way to TUE unbounded levity. WED WED 12:00 Composer of the Week b069x95b (Listen) WED Dmitry Shostakovich (1906-1975), The Unwilling Communist WED WED Donald Macleod views Shostakovich through the prism of his WED string quartets - today, the 7th quartet, in memory of his WED wife Nina; and the 8th, in memory of himself. WED WED After a long courtship, Dmitri and Nina Shostakovich had WED married in secret, in the face of opposition from both their WED mothers. It was a stormy relationship that quickly became an WED 'open' marriage, but it survived more than 20 years till WED Nina's sudden and unexpected death from cancer of the colon WED in December 1954. Shostakovich felt unequal to the task of WED bringing up two teenage children on his own, so he promptly WED set about finding a conjugal replacement. His first WED preference, Galina Ustvolskya, was a former composition WED student with whom he had become intimately involved; she WED turned him down. His second choice, a young woman called WED Margarita Kainova, accepted. Apparently the proposal was WED made by phone; perhaps nowadays he'd have sent a text. The WED marriage - which Shostakovich announced to his children WED after the event - failed within a few years. It probably WED didn't help that Margarita - who worked for the Soviet Youth WED Movement - appreciated neither Shostakovich's musical nor WED biological offspring. The year after the divorce, he wrote WED his ultra-concise, elliptical 7th String Quartet, to WED commemorate what would have been Nina's 50th birthday. Later WED the same year - 1960 - Shostakovich was staying in the spa WED town of Goerlitz, near Dresden, supposedly working on the WED score for a film by his friend Lev Arnshtam - Five Days, WED Five Nights. In the event, he made little headway with the WED film but was pitched headlong into a new quartet - his 8th - WED which he completed, in an extraordinarily concentrated burst WED of creative activity, in just three days. It's an explicitly WED autobiographical work that seems to have affected WED Shostakovich deeply. The tart filling in this quartet WED sandwich is his sardonic Satires, subtitled 'Pictures from WED the Past', to ensure that no-one could think the composer - WED who after years of resistance had finally, and with a WED colossal sense of self-disgust, joined the Communist Party - WED was intending to satirize the present state of Soviet WED society. THU THU 12:00 Composer of the Week b069x95g (Listen) THU Dmitry Shostakovich (1906-1975), Looking Death in the Face THU THU Donald Macleod views Shostakovich through the prism of his THU string quartets. Today, the ailing composer's thoughts turn THU to death - in the 14th Symphony, the music for King Lear, THU and the 'downright strange' 13th Quartet. THU In 1969, the muscular-wasting condition Shostakovich had THU been suffering from for a number of years was finally given THU a name: poliomyelitis. A stay in a Siberian clinic brought THU some relief, but from now till the end of his life, his time THU was increasingly punctuated by spells in hospital. It was THU during one of these spells that he composed his 14th THU Symphony, a song-cycle for soprano, baritone, strings and THU percussion on the subject of death - to underline the point, THU a senior party official, Pavel Apostolov, died during the THU première. The following year, Shostakovich wrote the music THU for Grigory Kosintsev's film of King Lear, material from THU which found its way into the 13th String Quartet - also THU completed during a hospital stay. It's a bleak, melancholy THU and unsettling work cast in a single, 20-minute arc, or as THU the composer described it to his colleagues in the THU Composers' Union, "a short, lyrical quartet with a joke THU middle" - the "joke middle" being a passage in which THU Shostakovich directs all but the first violin to strike the THU bellies of their instruments with the wood of their bows. THU What do these knocks signify? ... the irregular ticks of a THU malfunctioning clock? ... death knocking at the door? ... THU the final nailing-down of the coffin lid?... FRI FRI 12:00 Composer of the Week b069x95j (Listen) FRI Dmitry Shostakovich (1906-1975), The Two Shostakoviches FRI FRI Donald Macleod views Shostakovich through the prism of his FRI string quartets. Donald Macleod views Shostakovich through FRI the prism of his string quartets; his 15th expressed FRI powerfully in music the dissidence he was incapable of FRI expressing in his public life. FRI Since the official battering he had received for his opera FRI Lady Macbeth of the Mtsensk District, Shostakovich had been FRI at pains to toe the party line. During the Stalin era this FRI was understandable enough - it was a matter of sheer FRI survival. But after Stalin's death there was, in relative FRI terms, something of a thaw, and dissident voices began to be FRI heard. Shostakovich's was emphatically not one of them - in FRI fact he became more than ever the party loyalist, accepting FRI all sorts of official posts and duties and even adding his FRI name to an open letter attacking the nuclear physicist and FRI civil-rights activist Andrei Sakharov. The only language in FRI which Shostakovich was prepared to express dissidence was FRI the elusive, ambiguous, indefinable language of music. So FRI there grew up in Russia the notion of "the two FRI Shostakoviches" - one daring and progressive, the other, FRI frankly, a coward. Shostakovich subtitled the first movement FRI of his 15th Symphony 'The Toyshop', but it quickly becomes FRI clear that this creepy, eerie toyshop is no place for FRI children. The profoundly melancholy 15th String Quartet - FRI one of the composer's last major works - is a relentless FRI procession of six Adagios, in which Shostakovich completes FRI the journey to the interior he had begun with his 1st String FRI Quartet nearly four decades earlier. FRI FRI For this last episode Dalrymple has chosen the Delhi Book, FRI an album containing over 100 paintings of the great Indian FRI city in the 19th century. Many of these topographical works FRI are by the famous artist Mazhar Ali Khan. He worked in Delhi FRI in the late Mughal era, in what became known as the 'Company FRI Style' of painting under Western influence. Sir Thomas FRI Metcalfe, who was working in India as the Governor-General's FRI Agent, commissioned the Delhi Book and had it sent back to FRI England in 1844 as a gift to his daughters. FRI FRI Dalrymple tells the story of this book of paintings and the FRI often-bizarre British characters who lived and worked in FRI Delhi. He describes the importance of the Delhi Book in FRI recording how this great city looked in the 19th century. He FRI looks at the life of Mazhar Ali Khan and describes how FRI Mughal and British artistic impulses fused during this brief FRI period to create a remarkable final phase to the history of FRI Indian miniature painting. FRI FRI 'A Short History of Indian Art' is a Whistledown Production FRI for BBC Radio 3. The producer is Anthony Denselow. FRI FRI 23:00 World on 3 b069ydm1 (Listen) FRI 2015 Darbar Festival FRI FRI Recorded in London at the South Bank Centre's Darbar FRI Festival of Indian classical music, Lopa Kothari presents a FRI double bill of musicians from North and South India: the FRI sarod and tabla duo of Abhisek Lahiri and Pandit Ramkumar FRI Mishra, alongside the Carnatic vocals of Ranjani and FRI Gayatri.
