SAT SAT As they begin their 30th birthday season, Petroc talks to SAT players, conductors and looks back through the OAE archives SAT to find out how the orchestra has developed and adapted to a SAT changing musical world over the last three decades. SAT SAT "O Sing unto the Lord" is the title of Andrew Gant's new SAT book exploring the history of English Church music from the SAT earliest days of Christianity in England through to modern SAT times. Petroc talks to the author and reviews the book. SAT SAT When in 1962 Leonard Bernstein walked onto the stage of a SAT concert hall in America to conduct Brahms's D minor Piano SAT Concerto, the soloist - Glenn Gould - wasn't on stage. SAT Bernstein turned to the audience and made an extraordinary SAT apology for the performance they were about to hear. He said SAT that his and Gould's conception of the piece were totally SAT different but he had such regard for Gould as an artist that SAT he felt the audience should be allowed to hear it. He then SAT invited Gould to the stage and they performed the piece. SAT Petroc explores the incident through archive material and SAT talks to pianist Peter Donohoe about some of the issues it SAT raises. SAT SAT THE CURIOUS INCIDENT OF BERNSTEIN AND GOULD’S BRAHMS’ 1ST SAT PIANO CONCERTO SAT SAT As the audience settled themselves to hear Glenn Gould SAT perform Brahms’ D minor piano concerto with the New York SAT Philharmonic in 1963, the conductor Leonard Bernstein strode SAT onto the stage alone and made an announcement to the SAT public. In it, he distanced himself from Gould’s SAT interpretation of the work they were about to hear and gave SAT his reasons. He then turned and welcomed Gould onto the SAT platform and together they performed the piece. It’s a SAT unique incident in music history and Petroc, together with SAT pianist Peter Donohoe, revisit the archive of Bernstein’s SAT speech; Gould’s response in a radio interview a year later, SAT and the performance itself, and discuss why Bernstein might SAT have acted as he did. SAT SAT ORCHESTRA OF THE AGE OF ENLIGHTENMENT CELEBRATES 30 YEARS SAT SAT This week the period instrument group, the Orchestra of the SAT Age of Enlightenment launches its 30th birthday season. The SAT orchestra was founded and managed by the players themselves SAT and run on democratic lines – they would choose who SAT conducted them, what pieces they played and how they played SAT them. Thirty years on, how have those ideals survived a SAT changing musical landscape? How has its repertoire expanded SAT and how does it keep itself fresh? Petroc talks to some of SAT the OAE players, the critic Hilary Finch and conductor Mark SAT Elder to see how the orchestra has developed and adapted and SAT what challenges might lie ahead. SAT SAT ANDREW GANT ‘O SING UNTO THE LORD’ SAT SAT Andrew Gant’s latest book traces the history of English SAT church music from Anglo-Saxon times to the present day, SAT placing it in its social and historical context. It looks SAT at how the political, cultural and musical changes that have SAT swept over England throughout the last thousand years have SAT influenced the music written for the church and how these SAT developments are reflected back in the music itself. Petroc SAT talks to Andrew Gant about his book and reviews it with SAT musicologist Professor Tess Knighton. Finding himself at the heart of the Royal Family as SAT it's torn apart by Saul's increasingly obsessive jealousy, SAT David is drawn into a complicated love story of his own with SAT members of the royal family. In Georgian London in 1738, SAT Handel and his librettist Charles Jennens used the story as SAT the subject of one of the first English oratorios; now SAT Australian director Barrie Kosky, making his Glyndebourne SAT debut, has turned Handel's Saul into an opera as a series of SAT vivid tableaux, a combination of dreamscape and Baroque SAT nightmare in which a Lear-like King loses his grip on his SAT sanity, and his family and nation crumbles around him. In this SUN programme Ben Brantley, chief theatre critic of the New York SUN Times, is on location in the city to examine Miller's debt SUN to his home town. SUN SUN We visit the Millers' old house in Brooklyn, surely the SUN model for the Willy Loman home in Death of a Salesman and we SUN are down on the docks to consider the inspiration of stories SUN from the Sicilian community that became 'A View from the SUN Bridge'. We also speak to Miller's son Robert SUN who produced the film of his father's novel 'Focus' which SUN records anti-Semitism in New York in the post war years. SUN SUN And we look at Miller's themes of private struggles in an SUN unkind world, at his notion of heroism being in the effort, SUN not the achieving. SUN SUN In his exploration of New York, Miller was able to question SUN the American Dream and the rewards it promised. MON MON 12:00 Composer of the Week b06gqgpp (Listen) MON Vitezslava Kapralova (1915-1940), The Young Artist MON MON This week, for the first time on Composer of the Week, MON Donald Macleod explores the life of one of the 20th MON century's trailblazers, the Czech composer Vítezslava MON Kaprálová. MON MON Born in 1915 into a musical family, Vítezslava Kaprálová was MON one of the brightest young composers to emerge in Czech MON music inbetween the two world wars. You may have come across MON her name in association with her mentor, the composer MON Bohuslav Martinu, with whom she later became romantically MON involved, but irrespective of that link Kaprálová achieved MON considerable success under her own steam, notching up a MON series of professional achievements that set her apart from MON her contemporaries. She was the first woman to graduate as a MON composer from the Brno Conservatory, the first woman to be MON given the prestigious Smetana award for composition and the MON first woman to conduct the Czech Philharmonic. Here in the MON UK Kaprálová joined the ranks of British composer Dame Ethel MON Smyth and Nadia Boulanger in conducting the BBC Symphony MON Orchestra before the Second World War. MON MON There's litte doubt that the turbulence of the times in MON which Kaprálová lived created obstacles in her creative MON path. She became an exile after the Munich Pact of 1938 and MON the subsequent onset of the Second World War. Furthermore, MON like the talented French composer Lili Boulanger some twenty MON years earlier, Kaprálová's life was cut short; she died in MON France in 1940, at the age of just twenty-five. Nonetheless, MON she was able to compose quickly and naturally, so a sizeable MON legacy exists of some fifty works, spread across vocal, MON chamber, solo piano and orchestral forms. Donald Macleod MON explores Vítezslava Kaprálová's extraordinary story with MON Karla Hartl, the founder of The Kaprálová Society. MON MON Today Donald Macleod looks at Kaprálová's childhood in Brno, MON where she grew up in a musical family, in the shadow of MON Janácek's influence. She began to write music early on, with MON her earliest compositions, including two song sketches, here MON specially recorded by Radio 3 New Generation Artist, the MON Ukrainian soprano Olena Tokar, as well as her best known MON piano work, "April Preludes", and the piece with which she MON made an acclaimed debut in the UK, conducting the BBC MON Symphony Orchestra in her own "Military Sinfonietta" in MON 1938. TUE TUE 12:00 Composer of the Week b06gscmc (Listen) TUE Vitezslava Kapralova (1915-1940), Studies in Brno TUE TUE Vítezslava Kaprálová's studies in Brno at the academy TUE originally founded by Leoš Janácek expand her musical TUE horizons. TUE TUE Born in 1915 into a musical family, Vítezslava Kaprálová was TUE one of the brightest young composers to emerge in Czech TUE music inbetween the two world wars. A link with her mentor, TUE the composer Bohuslav Martinu, with whom she later became TUE romantically involved, arguably has unfairly impinged on her TUE posthumous reputation; Kaprálová achieved considerable TUE success under her own steam, notching up a series of TUE professional achievements that set her apart from her TUE contemporaries. She was the first woman to graduate as a TUE composer from the Brno Conservatory, the first woman to be TUE given the prestigious Smetana award for composition and the TUE first woman to conduct the Czech Philharmonic. Here in the TUE UK, Kaprálová joined the ranks of British composer Dame TUE Ethel Smyth and Nadia Boulanger in conducting the BBC TUE Symphony Orchestra before the Second World War. TUE TUE There's litte doubt that the turbulence of the times in TUE which Kaprálová lived created obstacles in her creative TUE path. She became an exile after the Munich Pact of 1938 and TUE the subsequent onset of the Second World War. Furthermore, TUE like the talented French composer Lili Boulanger some twenty TUE years earlier, Kaprálová's life was cut short; she died in TUE France in 1940, at the age of just twenty-five. Nonetheless TUE she was able to compose quickly and naturally, so a sizeable TUE legacy exists of some fifty works, spread across vocal, TUE chamber, solo piano and orchestral forms. Donald Macleod TUE explores Vítezslava Kaprálová's extraordinary story with TUE Karla Hartl, the founder of The Kaprálová Society. TUE TUE Profiting from the expansion of Czech-speaking culture, the TUE five years Vítezslava Kaprálová spent studying at the Brno TUE Conservatory proved to be formative to the development of TUE her musical language. Having entered at the age of fifteen TUE in 1930, she spent those years experimenting with TUE impressionistic and expressionistic idioms, leading to some TUE of her most striking compositions, including some of her TUE most memorable songs and her most substantial work for solo TUE piano to date. FRI FRI 9.30am FRI Take part in today's music-related challenge and identify a FRI piece of music played backwards. FRI FRI 10am FRI Rob talks to his guest, Nicholas Parsons. Actor, cabaret FRI performer, stand-up comedian, panel show host and FRI quizmaster, Nicholas has had a long and varied career in FRI show business since he first started working in repertory FRI theatre in the 1940s. He became a household name in the FRI 1970s as the host of game show Sale of the Century, but is FRI perhaps best known as the chairman of BBC Radio 4's Just a FRI Minute. Nicholas has chaired the hit comedy panel game since FRI its inception in 1967 and hasn't missed a show in 48 years FRI and over 900 performances. Nicholas will be talking about FRI the seven decades he has spent working in radio, theatre and FRI television, and sharing a selection of his favourite FRI classical music every day at 10am. FRI FRI 10.30am NEW: Music in Time FRI Sarah places Music in Time as she showcases the first use of FRI a prepared piano in music from the Modern age - La Piège de FRI Medusa by the French composer Erik Satie. FRI FRI 11am FRI Sarah's Artist of the Week is one of the most charismatic FRI conductors of the 20th century, and one of the first FRI American-born conductors to gain worldwide recognition. FRI Leonard Bernstein. Bernstein's prodigious talent as a FRI pianist coupled with lessons from composer Aaron Copland and FRI conductor Fritz Reiner catapulted him into the limelight in FRI the years following the Second World War. His Young People's FRI Concerts for CBS were particularly influential in drawing FRI people to classical music, and his work with the New York FRI Philharmonic and other orchestras led to an international FRI career. He performed Beethoven's Ninth Symphony on Christmas FRI Eve and Christmas Day in 1989 as part of the celebrations FRI marking the fall of the Berlin Wall. FRI FRI 12:00 Composer of the Week b06gscml (Listen) FRI Vitezslava Kapralova (1915-1940), The War Years FRI FRI Born in 1915 into a musical family, Vítezslava Kaprálová was FRI one of the brightest young composers to emerge in Czech FRI music inbetween the two world wars. You may have come across FRI her name in association with her mentor, the composer FRI Bohuslav Martinu, with whom she later became romantically FRI involved, but irrespective of that link Kaprálová achieved FRI considerable success under her own steam, notching up a FRI series of professional achievements that set her apart from FRI her contemporaries. She was the first woman to graduate as a FRI composer from the Brno Conservatory, the first woman to be FRI given the prestigious Smetana award for composition and the FRI first woman to conduct the Czech Philharmonic. Here in the FRI UK Kaprálová joined the ranks of British composer Dame Ethel FRI Smyth and Nadia Boulanger in conducting the BBC Symphony FRI Orchestra before the Second World War. FRI FRI There's litte doubt that the turbulence of the times in FRI which Kaprálová lived created obstacles in her creative FRI path. She became an exile after the Munich Agreement of 1938 FRI and the subsequent onset of the Second World War. FRI Furthermore, like the talented French composer Lili FRI Boulanger some twenty years earlier, Kaprálová's life was FRI cut short; she died in France in 1940, at the age of just FRI twenty-five. Nonetheless she was able to compose quickly and FRI naturally, so a sizeable legacy exists of some fifty works, FRI spread across vocal, chamber, solo piano and orchestral FRI forms. Donald Macleod explores Vítezslava Kaprálová's FRI extraordinary story with Karla Hartl, the founder of The FRI Kaprálová Society. FRI FRI Now living in exile in Paris, Vítezslava Kaprálová finds her FRI life increasingly insecure. Encouraged by her mentor FRI Martinu, with whom she's been having an affair, she tries FRI unsuccessfully to secure a place at New York's Juilliard FRI School. After breaking off her relationship with Martinu, FRI she decides to marry the Czech writer Jírí Mucha, although FRI she remains conflicted. On the morning of her wedding, one FRI biographer claims she called on Martinu. On her deathbed, FRI her last words were "That's Julietta", a reference to the FRI three note calling card she and Martinu had taken from his FRI opera. The FRI programme features works by Smetana, Tchaikovsky, Schnittke FRI and Shostakovich. FRI FRI Smetana: Overture - The Bartered Bride FRI Tchaikovsky: Piano Concerto No. 1 in B flat minor, Op. 23 FRI FRI 8.25: INTERVAL FRI FRI 8.45 FRI Schnittke: Moz-Art à la Haydn FRI Shostakovich: Symphony No. 9 in E flat major, Op.70 FRI FRI Vikingur Ólafsson Piano FRI Ulster Orchestra FRI Rafael Payare Conductor FRI FRI This evening's programme begins with the Overture to FRI Smetana's most famous opera, The Bartered Bride. It is FRI sparkling, uplifting and quintessentially Czech. Written in FRI 1863, before Smetana had composed the opera, it's one of the FRI most popular of all curtain-raisers. From its opening FRI gesture of a jubilant crowd on carnival day, to its bustling FRI string fugues suggesting the village gossips at work, it FRI perfectly establishes the mood of the high-spirited comedy FRI to follow. FRI FRI Fast-forward 11 years to Christmas Eve 1874 and FRI Tchaikovsky's play-through of his First Piano Concerto for FRI Nikolai Rubinstein, a colleague at the Moscow Conservatory. FRI Rubinstein pronounced the new work vulgar and, save "two or FRI three pages", worthless. The composer was mortified but FRI refused to change a note, and he was right: since its FRI première in Boston in October 1875, with Hans von Bülow at FRI the piano, the concerto has been one of the most popular in FRI the repertory. Even Rubinstein was eventually won over. The FRI work is now a perennial favourite, an archetype of the great FRI Romantic concerto, with an immediately recognisable opening. FRI FRI During the interval John Toal talks to this evening's FRI soloist, the Icelandic pianist Vikingur Ólafsson, and FRI features a selection of his chamber music recordings. FRI FRI We stay with Russian music for the second half of the FRI programme, which opens with Alfred Schnittke's Moz-Art à la FRI Haydn - a witty, tongue-in-cheek commentary on the music of FRI Mozart and Haydn, composed in 1977. It's followed by FRI Shostakovich's Ninth Symphony. Written in 1945, the piece FRI was intended to commemorate the Soviet victory over Germany FRI in the Second World War. The composer himself had said two FRI years earlier that the symphony would be a work for large FRI forces including orchestra, soloists and chorus with the FRI idea of celebrating the Russian people and the Red Army's FRI liberation of their homeland. However, when it finally FRI appeared the Symphony was without parts for either soloists FRI or chorus, and the work's "light" style surprised many. FRI Shortly after its première, the work was censored and banned FRI from performance by the Soviet authorities. FRI FRI 22:00 The Verb b06gvm25 (Listen) FRI The Backwards Verb FRI FRI Ian McMillan presents a 'backwards' cabaret of the word - FRI and revels in language that goes in the wrong direction. FRI Language enthusiast and podcast host Helen Zaltzman will FRI celebrate the joys of the 'backcronym', sound artist and FRI composer Tim Atack lets us into the fascination of sound FRI played backwards, and novelist Toby Litt changes the reverse FRI gear by considering the literary pleasure involved in making FRI time stand still. Welcome to the Verb, or should we say - FRI the Brev. FRI FRI 22:45 The Essay b06gsmgx (Listen) FRI Staging Arthur Miller, Episode 5 FRI FRI To mark the centenary of Arthur Miller's birth (17th October FRI 1915), playwrights, directors and an actor, reflect on what FRI his work means to them and describe their personal FRI connection with the playwright and his work. Part of a FRI season of dramas and documentaries across Radio 3, 4 and 4 FRI Extra exploring Miller's life and work. FRI FRI Tony Kushner is a Pulitzer prize-winning playwright and FRI screenwriter who knew Arthur Miller and has recently edited FRI Miller's Collected Plays. He reflects on the importance of FRI Arthur Miller in American theatre. FRI FRI In modern stage classics such as The Crucible, A View From FRI the Bridge, All My Sons and Death of a Salesman, Miller FRI located life's social, political and even metaphysical FRI issues in the lives of ordinary people. He engaged with his FRI times, and was attuned to the tremors of his culture. He FRI stood up to be counted and was an ardent advocate for FRI writers' freedom of expression. Drawing on examples across a FRI range of Miller's roles and plays. FRI FRI Producer: Caroline Hughes FRI A Whistledown production for BBC Radio 3.
