SAT SAT One to One with Alexander Goehr SAT SAT In a major interview, Tom Service talks to a key figure in SAT contemporary British music: Alexander Goehr. SAT SAT Goehr’s father, Walter, was a conductor and a pupil of SAT Arnold Schoenberg; he brought his family to Britain shortly SAT after Alexander was born in 1932 in Berlin. After studying SAT at the Royal Manchester College of Music (where together SAT with Harrison Birtwistle, Peter Maxwell Davies, Elgar SAT Howarth, and John Ogdon he formed the New Music Manchester SAT Group), he spent a year in Paris learning from Olivier SAT Messiaen and Yvonne Loriod. In the early 60's he worked as SAT a producer for the BBC and formed the Music Theatre SAT Ensemble, producing works in a now-established musical SAT form. In 1975 he was appointed to the chair of the SAT University of Cambridge, where he remains Emeritus SAT Professor. SAT SAT It is impossible to overestimate Goehr’s importance for and SAT influence on generations of composers, and for the whole SAT fabric of new musical life in Britain since the 1950s. Now SAT in his early 80s, ‘Sandy’ Goehr reflects on his life in SAT music, with typical modesty. Tom Service talks to him about SAT the individual path he has taken in composition, drawing on SAT a rich European cultural heritage rather than rejecting it. SAT Goehr reflects on these traits in his music and their SAT origins: his heritage and from his father, the influence of SAT Messiaen, his relationship with Boulez and the Darmstadt SAT school and the uneasy relationship he had with their ideas, SAT and how teaching composition affected his own music. Why do we hardly ever notice SUN that?" asks a character in Alasdair Gray's Lanark. "Because SUN nobody imagines living there," replies another. "Think of SUN Florence, Paris, London, New York. Nobody visiting them for SUN the first time is a stranger because he's already visited SUN them in paintings, novels, history books and films, but if a SUN city hasn't been used by an artist, not even the inhabitants SUN live there imaginatively." SUN SUN When writer Louise Welsh arrived in Glasgow in 1985 the SUN former work horse of the Empire seemed to have turned its SUN back on the River Clyde. Prospects were bleak, but there was SUN a buzz of creativity in the city. SUN SUN Since 1996 - the year Douglas Gordon collected the Turner SUN Prize- seventeen artists from Glasgow have been nominated SUN for the award. Ever since Glasgow has been heralded as a SUN creative anomaly: how could a working class industrial city, SUN with little in the way of arts infrastructure, produce such SUN interesting conceptual artists? Or so the thinking went. SUN SUN "There are the myths and there's what actually happened," SUN says Francis McKee, director of the Centre for Contemporary SUN Arts. Louise Welsh explores myths and miracles, taking to SUN the streets and meeting artists along in the way - in an SUN abandoned shipyard, an adventure playground, the home of a SUN tobacco merchant (now the Gallery of Modern Art) and an East SUN End hall where a Republican marching band practises its SUN music- to find out how the city has changed their work and SUN how, in turn, art is affecting the city. Psychologist SUN Pumla Gobodo-Madikizela prepares to sit opposite the SUN notorious Eugene de Kock, nicknamed 'Prime Evil', the head SUN of the apartheid regime's death squads. A member of the SUN Truth and Reconciliation Commission, Madikizela questions de SUN Kock who is serving a 212 year sentence for crimes against SUN humanity, murder, conspiracy to murder, attempted murder, SUN assault, kidnapping, illegal possession of firearms, and SUN fraud. She is determined to try to understand what motivated SUN de Kock's actions. One is reminded of European writer and SUN philosopher Hannah Arendt's endeavour to understand the SUN nature of evil when she wrote about the Nazi holocaust SUN architect Adolf Eichmann's trial in Israel in 1961. In 2012, when we were MON conceptualising our Bach-Piazzolla suite, Friedemann was MON devoted to arranging the works of Johann Sebastian Bach.
