TUE TUE In a tribute shortly after Manuel Ponce's death, his great TUE friend and collaborator, the guitarist Andres Segovia said TUE "Anyone who loves the guitar, unless he be hard-hearted and TUE empty-headed, must revere the memory of Ponce. He lifted the TUE guitar from the low artistic state in which it had lain. He TUE undertook the crusade, full of eagerness to liberate the TUE prisoner. Thanks to him, the guitar was saved from music TUE written only by guitarists." TUE TUE Ponce was also instrumental in connecting classical music TUE with the folk tradition. He wrote "I consider it the duty of TUE every Mexican composer to ennoble the music of his native TUE country, giving it artistic form, dressing it with TUE polyphonic clothing and preserving with love the popular TUE melodies which are the expression of the natural soul." TUE Manuel Ponce was one of Mexico's greatest composers, musical TUE innovators and educators, yet he wore his genius lightly. TUE His contemporaries described him as affable, intelligent and TUE modest. TUE TUE In 1915 Ponce went into temporary self-imposed exile in TUE Cuba. The piano works he composed there showed the influence TUE of the music he was hearing around him - and the Cubans TUE appreciated it: "Ponce is a sublime and inspired composer. TUE He has captured our ambiance; he has enclosed our sky's TUE clarity and beauty and has distilled our flowers' scent into TUE his music." As we TUE boldly go where no-one has gone before, what are the TUE challenges we are likely to encounter along the way? TUE TUE In this second essay, archaeologist, explorer and spacesuit TUE designer at Portland University, Dr Cameron Smith, examines TUE how human society and culture is likely to evolve in the far TUE future when vast tracts of nothingness separate space TUE colonies. TUE TUE Cameron has been appointed to study the issues of human TUE evolution on a future starship, travelling on a TUE multi-generational interstellar voyage to a new world. In TUE this essay he sets out what changes in human culture and TUE society we are likely to see develop as people leave the TUE Earth forever. TUE TUE Using evidence from human history and modern population TUE genetics, Cameron sets out what he describes as 'three ages TUE to the stars'. TUE TUE The first is the Age of Departure. Who will be the founders TUE who board the starships to venture where no-one has gone TUE before? How many will go and how will they be selected? TUE Cameron suggests that a population of 10,000 - around the TUE size of a small town such as Amesbury in Wiltshire - will be TUE the ideal number. Their culture, he says, will still be TUE Earth-based. TUE TUE The second age, the Interstellar Age, will be unique in the TUE history of our species. Within 110 years of departure, the TUE starship population will not include a single person who TUE lived on Earth. Culturally the world of the starship will be TUE very different from the home planet - there will be changes TUE to language, art and even minor biological transformations. TUE TUE The final stage of an interstellar voyage will be the Age of TUE Arrival. One day a human will be born who takes the first TUE step on a new world. In the far future these people will be TUE very different to those left behind on Earth. TUE TUE Producer: Richard Hollingham TUE TUE A Boffin Media production for BBC Radio 3. WED WED In this third essay, Professor of Experimental Architecture WED at Newcastle University, Rachel Armstrong, explores the WED possibilities of building organic starships and establishing WED ecosystems on alien worlds. WED WED Rachel works on the design and engineering of ecosystems on WED Earth. She is applying the same approach to a concept design WED for a future habitable starship. WED WED Living in space is already a daily reality. In fact the WED International Space Station - in orbit 400 kilometres above WED the Earth - has been continuously occupied for more than 15 WED years. The astronauts on board, however, rely on supplies WED from Earth to feed themselves. WED WED A recent attempt to grow just a few leaves of lettuce has WED not been entirely successful. Neither have past efforts to WED create self-sustaining biospheres on Earth. How then are we WED going to feed ourselves on alien worlds? WED WED Rachel suggests we need to rethink spacecraft design and WED build organic vessels that live and breath around us. She is WED working on a starship concept called Persephone, which would WED be quite unlike the futuristic ships of science fiction. As we THU boldly go where no-one has gone before, what are the THU challenges we are likely to encounter along the way? THU THU A colony on the Moon, Mars or a spaceship on a voyage to a THU distant world will be physically fragile. A single terrorist THU bomb could kill everyone and a ruthless dictator in charge THU of the air could oversee a vicious regime. THU THU In this fourth essay, acclaimed science fiction author THU Stephen Baxter examines how fiction has tackled the THU challenges of government in the space environment. He also THU references human pioneers of the past - such as the US THU Founding Fathers - who had the vision to devise government THU for as yet undiscovered territories. THU THU Space exploration poses serious political challenges. THU Astronauts, such as British astronaut Tim Peake, travelling THU to and from orbiting space stations are citizens of nations THU on Earth. However, in the not so far future, inhabitants of THU a Mars base will need to devise new rights and new ways of THU governing to ensure no tyrant can control the air supply. THU THU How would you rebel in space against a tyrannous regime? THU There is a fundamental clash in these perilous environments THU between the freedom of the individual and the need for the THU collective to maintain shared systems. THU THU There is also the danger of an extraterrestrial colony THU attacking the Earth or war in space. As we move off world, THU Stephen argues, we could master energies with effects far THU worse than nuclear weapons. Ranging from expressions of FRI personal faith and childlike innocence to celebrations of FRI American landscapes and jazz, Sarah chooses a handful of her FRI favourite songs written by American composers including FRI Aaron Copland, Leonard Bernstein, Samuel Barber and George FRI Gershwin. FRI FRI 9.30am FRI Take part in today's musical challenge: trace the classical FRI theme behind a well known song. FRI FRI 10am FRI Sarah's guest this week is the author Louis de Bernières. FRI Well known for his worldwide bestselling tale of love and FRI war Captain Corelli's Mandolin, Louis's other works include FRI the acclaimed Birds Without Wings and A Partisan's Daughter, FRI as well as collections of poetry and short stories. His FRI latest major novel, The Dust That Falls From Dreams, the FRI first instalment of a family saga that opens with the end of FRI the Victorian era, was released last year. Louis is also a FRI keen musician and plays the flute, the guitar and, of FRI course, the mandolin. Louis will be talking about his life FRI and his writing, and sharing a selection of his favourite FRI classical music with Sarah, every day at 10am. FRI FRI 10:30am FRI Sarah places Music in Time. The focus is on the Modern FRI period and the influence of cabaret clubs on the music of FRI Erik Satie, particularly his song Je te veux. FRI FRI 11am FRI Sarah's Artists of the Week are the Brodsky Quartet, named FRI after the dedicatee of Tchaikovsky's Violin Concerto, Adolf FRI Brodsky. The Brodskys are known for their insatiable desire FRI to explore and expand the string quartet repertoire. FRI Throughout the week Sarah showcases the quartet's passion FRI for 'all good music' as she features their interpretations FRI of classic quartets by Dvorak, Verdi, Debussy and Britten, FRI as well as rare masterpieces by Respighi, Panufnik and FRI Delius. FRI FRI 12:00 Composer of the Week b06zq0sm (Listen) FRI Manuel Ponce (1882-1948), Manuel the Composer FRI FRI Despite Manuel Ponce's failing health, he and Andres Segovia FRI embark on a tour of Uruguay and are given a rapturous FRI welcome. FRI FRI In a tribute shortly after Manuel Ponce's death, his great FRI friend and collaborator, the guitarist Andres Segovia said FRI "Anyone who loves the guitar, unless he be hard-hearted and FRI empty-headed, must revere the memory of Ponce. He lifted the FRI guitar from the low artistic state in which it had lain. He FRI undertook the crusade, full of eagerness to liberate the FRI prisoner. Thanks to him, the guitar was saved from music FRI written only by guitarists." FRI FRI Ponce was also instrumental in connecting classical music FRI with the folk tradition. He wrote "I consider it the duty of FRI every Mexican composer to ennoble the music of his native FRI country, giving it artistic form, dressing it with FRI polyphonic clothing and preserving with love the popular FRI melodies which are the expression of the natural soul." FRI Manuel Ponce was one of Mexico's greatest composers, musical FRI innovators and educators, yet he wore his genius lightly. FRI His contemporaries described him as affable, intelligent and FRI modest. FRI FRI After nine years studying in Paris, Manuel Ponce returned to FRI Mexico where he eventually took up the post of Director of FRI the National School of Music. He had never enjoyed very FRI robust health, and as time went on, he suffered increasing FRI bouts of illness, some of them forcing him to be away from FRI work for several months at a stretch. FRI FRI Nevertheless, in 1941 Ponce and Segovia embarked on a FRI triumphant tour of Uruguay. The enthusiastic response of the FRI Uruguayan audiences touched Ponce, who wrote to his wife FRI Clema: "God be thanked, enormous success last night... the FRI public was delirious. You will see from the newspaper FRI accounts what a reception they gave my music. Kisses from FRI Manuel the Composer." FRI Presented by Jamie MacDougall FRI FRI Glinka: Valse-fantasie FRI Shostakovich: Violin Concerto No 1 FRI FRI 8.15 Interval FRI FRI 8.35 FRI Mussorgsky/Ravel: Pictures from an Exhibition FRI FRI An all Russian concert live from the historic Music Hall, in FRI Aberdeen. Alexander Vedernikov, one of Russian music's most FRI renowned interpreters, joins the BBC Scottish Symphony FRI Orchestra in a concert which opens with Glinka's balletic FRI Valse-fantasie: his short piano piece which went on, in FRI orchestral form, to inspire choreography by George FRI Balanchine. FRI FRI The virtuoso Russian violinist Boris Brovtsyn is the soloist FRI in Shostakovich's Violin Concerto No 1, that composer's 1948 FRI work which became a victim of Soviet censorship. A FRI wide-ranging musical narrative: from its mysterious FRI 'Nocturne' opening, to its boisterous finale. FRI FRI And the concert concludes with a piece by another unorthodox FRI Russian, Modest Mussorgsky. His 'Pictures from an FRI Exhibition' began life as a piano work, and went on to be FRI better known in these seductively colourful orchestrations FRI by Ravel. First written in 1874 the boldly original musical FRI movements - echoing, at times, Russian folk melodies - FRI depict the works of Russian painter Viktor Hartmann, FRI including the 'Ballet of the Unhatched Chicks in their FRI Shells' and the famous 'Great Gate of Kiev.' FRI FRI Followed by a glimpse into Adopt a Composer - Making Music's FRI scheme pairing composers with performing groups from around FRI the country. FRI FRI Producer: Faith Lawrence. FRI FRI Ira Lightman FRI FRI We commissioned the poet and Verb regular Ira Lightman to FRI use the language of a poem to bend time and allow us to FRI experience it in an unconventional way. Ira’s latest FRI chapbook ‘Skelelittle’ is published by Like This Press. FRI Ira Lightman on Twitter FRI FRI William Gibson FRI FRI William Gibson is one of the world’s best known writers of FRI speculative fiction. He coined the term ‘Cyberspace’, which FRI he popularised in his debut novel. We ask how he comes up FRI with such neologisms, and he reads from his new novel, ‘The FRI Peripheral’ (Penguin) which explores a new concept of FRI time-travel and the narrative possibilities of multiple FRI futures. FRI William Gibson FRI William Gibson on Twitter FRI FRI Geoff Ryman FRI FRI The novelist Geoff Ryman explores the appeal of ‘Time FRI Travel’ literature, and the devices used by authors as FRI diverse as Audrey Niffeneger and Brian Aldiss, to catapult FRI their characters through the centuries. Geoff teaches FRI Creative Writing at the University of Manchester and is the FRI author of ‘253’ (Flamingo), an award-winning novel that FRI started life as a website. FRI Geoff Ryman FRI Geoff Ryman on Twitter FRI FRI Sally Rodgers FRI FRI The composer and sound artist Sally Rodgers works as part of FRI the electronic duo ‘A Man Called Adam’. FRI A Man Called Adam FRI Sally Rodgers on Twitter FRI FRI 22:45 The Essay b06zq2pf (Listen) FRI Another Giant Leap, Alien Visitors FRI FRI In this series, Another Giant Leap, our essayists consider FRI how humans might evolve into a cosmic civilisation. As we FRI boldly go where no-one has gone before, what are the FRI challenges we are likely to encounter along the way? FRI FRI In this final essay, astronomy writer and science journalist FRI Dr Stuart Clark begins by asking: where are all the aliens? FRI If interstellar travel is possible, then why haven't we been FRI visited by other civilisations? FRI FRI One possible answer is that travel across the vast tracts of FRI space that separate habitable worlds is simply impossible. FRI Without a breakthrough in physics - such as a warp drive FRI propulsion system - then perhaps we are destined to remain FRI Earth-bound. FRI FRI If this is the case then maybe we should explore the cosmos FRI through the eyes of robots? Already we can follow the FRI progress of the Curiosity rover as it trundles across Mars, FRI but imagine the same experience in virtual reality. FRI FRI It would be almost as good as being there. We could be FRI god-like observers; able to participate in everything the FRI Universe has to offer, yet kept in relative safety right FRI here on Earth. FRI FRI There are, however, serious efforts to develop the FRI technology for a starship and search for habitable worlds to FRI head to. But what if these worlds are already inhabited? FRI FRI Stuart leaves us with the final disconcerting thought that FRI aliens have already found us but have chosen not to announce FRI their presence. There could be a space probe in our solar FRI system watching the Earth right now...and even listening to FRI Radio 3.
