SAT SAT Sir Peter Maxwell Davies CH CBE (1934-2016) SAT SAT Tom Service presents a tribute to the composer Sir Peter SAT Maxwell Davies. One of the foremost British composers of our SAT time, Peter Maxwell Davies has made a profound contribution SAT to musical history through his wide-ranging and prolific SAT output. SAT SAT Leading figures in the musical world assess his life and SAT music, including the conductor Oliver Knussen who attended SAT many of his premieres then became a good friend and SAT associate; the composer Alexander Goehr, one of the SAT formative group of musicians who studied together in SAT Manchester; and the music critic Paul Driver who grew up SAT listening to Maxwell Davies’ music before starting out on SAT his journalism career. Plus contributions from some of the SAT musicians he worked with from the outset: Philippa Davies SAT and Stephen Pruslin. And we hear insights from ‘Max’ SAT himself, in a Music Matters interview from his home in the SAT Orkney Islands, recorded in 2009. SAT SAT Maxwell Davies’ output has been prolific, taking up the SAT mantle of the avant-garde in his early years with chamber SAT and music theatre works, and later producing symphonies, SAT concertos, an entire cycle of string quartets, choral works, SAT operas and more. SAT SAT He was also an experienced conductor, having a close SAT relationship with the BBC Philharmonic as Associate SAT Conductor/Composer for 10 years, and also with the Royal SAT Philharmonic Orchestra. Many of his orchestral works SAT received their premieres at the BBC Proms. SAT SAT Born in Salford in 1934, Sir Peter attended Royal Manchester SAT College of Music where he was part of the so-called SAT Manchester School with contemporaries Harrison Birtwistle, SAT John Ogdon, Elgar Howarth, and Alexander Goehr. He later SAT secured a Fellowship at Princeton where he studied with SAT Roger Sessions and Milton Babbitt. The 1960s were an SAT especially formative decade, establishing him as a leading SAT contemporary musical figure. SAT SAT In 1971 Maxwell Davies moved to the Orkney Islands, where he SAT made his home for the rest of his life. The landscape and SAT culture had a deep impact on his music and in 1977 he SAT founded the St Magnus Festival, an annual event and just one SAT of several ways in which he has put his deep commitment to SAT education and community music to good use. He has also been SAT outspoken in the public arena, with many of his works SAT touching on major issues such as war, the environment and SAT politics. SAT SAT Sir Peter held the post of Master of the Queen’s Music from SAT 2004–2014. He was knighted in 1987 and made a Member of the SAT Order of the Companions of Honour in the New Year 2014 SAT Honours List. Common to all is the principle that good or TUE bad actions in this life will have repercussions after TUE death. TUE TUE But how relevant are these theories of the afterlife to the TUE world we live in now? New developments in science, TUE philosophy and technology threaten to undermine our TUE traditional ideas of eternity - and even threaten to render TUE them obsolete. In this series, five writers set out to TUE explore ideas of eternity, infinity and the afterlife from TUE fresh viewpoints. Does our insistence on measuring and TUE categorising time serve to make eternity even more TUE unknowable? What can the principles of mathematics tell us TUE about the tricky subject of infinity?
