It’s a SAT work that is a portrait of a whole genre of music – The SAT Waltz – its birth, life, and death. Ravel composed it in SAT 1919 and 1920, after his devastating experiences serving SAT in the First World War and the death of his mother, the SAT human being he was closest to in his whole life. He SAT initially planned the work in 1906 as a tribute to the SAT waltzes of Johann Strauss, and the seductive, sensual SAT structures of the dance form, a piece of music that would SAT embody the whirling pleasure of dancers in Imperial balls SAT in Vien SAT SAT After the war, Ravel’s sumptuous tribute curdled into SAT something much darker. Instead of celebrating the waltz, SAT La Valse destroys it. At the end of the piece, Ravel SAT murders the waltz-form he loved so much, finishing it off SAT with a cacophony of rhythmic violence and crunching SAT harmonic dissonance. This isn’t just a musical process: SAT the music sounds like the end of Empire, a revelation of SAT the skull beneath the skin, the moment when pleasure turns SAT to pain. How can you interpret La Valse as anything else SAT but a picture of a culture, a society, in inexorable SAT decline? SAT SAT But the composer himself resisted all of these attempts at SAT interpretation. Ravel was notoriously secretive about all SAT aspects of his life, from his compositional process to his SAT private life, and refused to sanction any reading of La SAT Valse that said anything more controversial than the piece SAT is about the waltz. SAT SAT With contributions from conductor Eliahu Inbal, composer SAT George Benjamin, Ravel biographer Roger Nichols, Deborah SAT Mawer of Lancaster University, and French musicologist SAT David Lamaze, who claims to have discovered a musical code SAT in La valse. SAT SAT You can listen to a full performance of La Valse on SAT Breakfast on Sunday morning at 8.45am SAT SAT 13:00 The Early Music Show b00jdhvm (Listen) SAT Phantasm Profile SAT Lucie Skeaping talks to Laurence Dreyfus, founder/director SAT of the viol consort Phantasm. SUN SUN 22:15 Words and Music b00jdhxt (Listen) SUN Young and Easy SUN SUN I took the title for this programme about youth from Dylan SUN Thomas's poem Fern Hill: 'As I was young and easy SUN under the apple boughs ...' You feel things more SUN intensely when you're young. I think that is why the SUN subject has inspired so many writers and composers. SUN SUN I have loosely divided the programme into themes of youth SUN and joy, youth and sorrow, youthful love, doomed youth, SUN rebellious youth, deprived youth and finally, the SUN transience of youth. I have concentrated on periods of SUN history when youth has been important such as the late SUN 18th and early 19th century. You could argue that the SUN Romantics invented youth. Then a hundred years later when SUN the First World War wiped out a generation of young men, SUN youth became something to treasure. The last third of the SUN programme mainly concentrates on the 20th century - the SUN period between the wars when the bright young things - SUN those who were lucky enough to be still alive - partied SUN as if their lives depended on it. Then I have explored the SUN 1950s, the birth of the angry young man, the emergence of SUN gang culture and the arrival of flower power. Near the end SUN I have returned to Wordsworth and his poem Tintern Abbey SUN in which he comes to term with leaving behind the passion SUN of youth and finds something deeper and more tranquil to SUN replace it. I have ended on an elegiac note with Ernest SUN Dowson's poem Vitae Summa Brevis Spem Nos Vetat Incohare SUN Longam which is a quotation from Horace meaning 'The SUN Brief Sum of Life Forbids us the Hope of Enduring Long.' SUN SUN The music I have chosen is all youth-related. Some of it SUN is on the subject of youth, such as Schumann's Album fur SUN de Jugend, Thomas Morley's setting of Shakespeare's SUN song Oh Mistress Mine, Janice Ian's At Seventeen, SUN Debussy's Girl with the Golden Hair and Gee Officer SUN Krupke! from West Side Story. Other pieces of music I have SUN included because they involve youthful performers, such as SUN the violinist Chloe Hanslip and the Simon Bolivar Youth SUN Orchestra of Venezuela. Finally I have also included music SUN written when the composer was very young, such as SUN Mozart's Mitridate, written when he was only fourteen.
