Almost seven years into his tenure at SAT the helm of probably the most famous orchestra in the SAT world, Rattle chats openly about his relationship with the SAT orchestra and about renewing its tradition with the help SAT of players united in purpose, yet coming from very SAT different backgrounds and nationalities. SAT SAT Rattle also talks about a crucial role he sees for the SAT orchestra today - catering for Berlin, an increasingly SAT multi-cultural and renewed city - as well as pondering the SAT question of what the attraction is to him of conducting. SAT SAT This week on Music Matters Tom Service travels to Berlin SAT for an exclusive interview with Sir Simon Rattle. SAT SAT As Principal Conductor of the Berlin Philharmonic, Rattle SAT has arguably the best job in classical music. His SAT association with the Berliners goes back to 1987, when he SAT conducted them during his enormously successful 18 years SAT at the helm of the City of Birmingham Symphony Orchestra. SAT He was appointed to his current role in 2002. SAT SAT Critical acclaim and controversy have both played a part SAT during Rattle’s time in Berlin, perhaps no surprise SAT considering what he is trying to achieve. His vision has SAT been for maintaining the orchestra’s traditions in the SAT music of Beethoven, Brahms, Bruckner and Mahler, whilst SAT breaking new ground: contemporary music features SAT prominently on his agenda, and since he arrived the SAT orchestra has embarked on its first ever community SAT projects. SAT SAT Over the last few years there have been reports that SAT Rattle has been losing touch with the Berliners’ trademark SAT rich and warm sound, and that he has been dragging the SAT orchestra unwillingly into the new territories. SAT SAT However he seems now to be winning the musical and SAT institutional battles, with the players now enthusiastic SAT about their outreach work and having recently granted him SAT – through their traditional balloting process – an SAT extension to his contract to 2018. SAT SAT Tom met Rattle in the conductor’s room at the modernist SAT Philharmonie concert hall on the borders of West and East SAT Berlin – a room previously inhabited only by his SAT predecessors Claudio Abbado and Herbert von Karajan. In a SAT frank interview, they talked about Rattle the conductor SAT and the Berliner. Words and Music this week is a noisy SUN celebration of correspondence and correspondences - the SUN exchange between poets, between musicians, between a SUN mother and her son, between lovers and between friends. SUN Plenty to contemplate and to compare but precious little SUN silence...a nightmare for the likes of Kafka who worried SUN that wayside ghosts preyed on his letters drinking the SUN paper kisses and consuming all love and affection before SUN they reached the rightful recipient but a feast for our SUN unquiet, twittering Twenty First Century. SUN SUN This week's programme is an invitation to eavesdrop on SUN Arthur Honegger's unwitting correspondence with Steve SUN Reich - to hear Charlie Mingus's open letter to Duke SUN Ellington...or, if you prefer, to lend an ear to Mary SUN Woolstonecroft's coruscating rebuke to her feckless SUN beau, Gilbert Imlay and to share the bitter taste of SUN Ovid's Black Sea exile. Some of the exchanges are direct SUN while others are arrows unleashed in hope across time and SUN space. So Lawrence Durrell's beautiful elegy --- On SUN First looking into Loeb's Horace - is an exchange SUN between two poets, a commentator's notes on a fellow SUN commentator and also a sort of self portrait in a convex SUN mirror. SUN SUN Throughout the programme there are similar harmonic SUN collisions - Britten with Dowland, Part with Britten, SUN Janacek with Ezra Pound and Matthew Sweeney with Linton SUN Kwesi Johnson among others.
