John Potter/Leonard Bernstein/Thomas HampsonSAT
SAT
Tom Service talks to tenor John Potter about his new bookSAT
on the history of the tenor voice, from its emergence inSAT
the 16th century to the phenomenon of the Three Tenors andSAT
beyond. With contributions from fellow tenors IanSAT
Bostridge and Robert Tear.SAT
SAT
Plus the latest research on the politcal life of LeonardSAT
Bernstein against the backdrop of the Cold War, andSAT
baritone Thomas Hampson discussing his Song of AmericaSAT
project.SAT
SAT
Thomas Hampson and American SongSAT
SAT
The baritone Thomas Hampson is a huge champion of AmericanSAT
Song and this week gave Music Matters a privateSAT
performance, in one of the rehearsals rooms at the RoyalSAT
Opera House, where he's singing the part of Germont in aSAT
star-studded La Traviata. He sang three American songs,SAT
excerpts from all of which can be heard tomorrow. ThomasSAT
tells Tom how, through his aptly named HampsongSAT
Foundation, he is currently promoting his Song of AmericaSAT
project, an idea he's working on with the Library ofSAT
Congress in Washington to celebrate the 250th anniversarySAT
of the first ever art-song to be written on American soil.SAT
Hampson is touring the US with a veritable smorgasbord ofSAT
American song later this year and explains to Tom hisSAT
passionate belief that you can hear America's historySAT
and identity through its songs, from Burleigh to Barber,SAT
from Foster to Rorem.SAT
SAT
Thomas Hampson can be heard singing Germont in La TraviataSAT
at the Royal Opera House in London until the 6th July.SAT

Leonard BernsteinSAT
SAT
The composer, conductor and pianist Leonard Bernstein isSAT
the focus of a new book by Barry Seldes which exploresSAT
Bernstein's life and music through the prism of hisSAT
political convictions. Whilst some of Bernstein's publicSAT
politicking is common knowledge, such as his concert inSAT
Berlin after the fall of the Wall for example, SeldesSAT
argues his social and political views drove his wholeSAT
career. His arguments are based on the 400 000 pages ofSAT
the Bernstein archive at the Library of Congress and theSAT
release a few years ago of the FBI's 600-page file onSAT
Bernstein. He was blacklisted and his passport wasSAT
confiscated because he was a known left-wing sympathiserSAT
in the 40s and 50s. Living through the McCarthyiteSAT
witch-hunts left its mark on his life. Barry Seldes andSAT
other Bernstein experts talk to Tom about how BernsteinSAT
fought for gay rights, Israel, and AIDS research, and howSAT
he became increasingly frustrated by America'sSAT
right-wing politics in the 70s and 80s.SAT

Musician' by Barry Seldes is published by the UniversitySAT

John Potter's 'Tenor: History of a Voice'SAT
SAT
Music Matters returns to the topic of song with JohnSAT
Potter's new book on the tenor voice which claims to beSAT
a comprehensive history of that exotic breed of singerSAT
that still seems to captivate us more than any otherSAT
operatic voice-type. It's not just Pavarotti and theSAT
Three Tenors. Tom talks to John Potter, a tenor himself,SAT
about how the tenor voice developed from humble beginningsSAT
in medieval music to become the blue-riband vocal virtuosoSAT
of Italian and German opera. Music Matters has alsoSAT
enlisted two of Britian's best-loved tenors, IanSAT
Bostridge and Robert Tear, to join Tom in reviewing theSAT
book.SAT
SAT
John Potter's 'Tenor: History of a Voice' isSAT
published by Yale University Press.SAT

PerelandraSAT
SAT
Donald Swann is perhaps best known for his part in theSAT
song-writing duo Flanders and Swann but Music Matters thisSAT
week looks at one of his lesser known, but larger scaleSAT
works, the opera Perelandra, based on the allegoricalSAT
novel by C.S. Lewis. Thanks to the efforts of Swann'sSAT
friends and colleagues Leon Berger and Jonathan Butcher,SAT
it's being given a chance to be heard in public again,SAT
for the first time in more than four decades. Tom visitsSAT
the rehearsals to talk to Leon Berger and Jonathan ButcherSAT
and gets a sneak preview of the opera.SAT
SAT
Perelandra is being performed at the Sheldonian Theatre,SAT
Oxford on Friday 26th June, and also has a chamberSAT
performance at Keble College Chapel, Oxford on ThursdaySAT
25th June.SAT

Ideas of WildernessSUN
SUN
'Wilderness' conjures up images of vast uncultivatedSUN
planes, the endless sand-dunes or rock-formations in theSUN
deserts, the vast expanses of the ice lands, the immensitySUN
of oceans, the jagged peaks of colossal mountains and alsoSUN
the rolling hills, tranquil lakes and verdant forests ofSUN
lowland countryside. 'Wilderness' is a place keptSUN
wild, seemingly untouched by the progress ofSUN
civilizations. Or is it?SUN
SUN
As consciousness about the environment increases, what isSUN
perceived to be 'wilderness' is becoming more fragile.SUN
The idea of wilderness is not as fixed as it might firstSUN
seem and depends on perceived relationships betweenSUN
humankind and nature. These relationships are culturallySUN
determined and the idea of wilderness is not onlySUN
man-made, but also plural. There is a clear distinctionSUN
between the Eastern (Taoist) and Western ideas ofSUN
wilderness. Whereas Western writers understand wildernessSUN
as otherness, something apart from humankind, and as aSUN
metaphysical aspiration, Ancient Chinese poets express theSUN
oneness of human life and wilderness.SUN
SUN
This edition of Words and Music is a journey throughSUN
different ideas of wilderness that begins and ends withSUN
the idea of wilderness as home, whether in the vast TaoistSUN
('cosmological') tradition of wilderness literature, orSUN
the romantic western idea of wilderness as a refuge fromSUN
the city, a place of outstanding natural beauty and,SUN
ultimately, a symbol of freedom. At the outset of theSUN
journey, Chia Tao's 'Evening Landscape, ClearingSUN
Snow' is juxtaposed with Coleridge's 'Frost atSUN
Midnight' and accompanied by Paul Reade's Aspects ofSUN
Landscape for solo oboe and Redolfi's Mare Teno forSUN
ondes Martenot. Paul Reade's Aspects of Landscape returnSUN
at the end of the programme under T'ao Ch'ien'sSUN
'Home again among Fields and Gardens'.SUN
SUN
The programme explores the preservation of what weSUN
perceive to be wild places through the 1964 US WildernessSUN
Act, the eco-writing of Robinson Jeffers and Hopkins'SUN
'Inversnaid'. Wilderness is also hostile, as describedSUN
by Shackleton and Auden, and accompanied by the austereSUN
Largo from Shostakovich's String Quartet No.8. There isSUN
also an idea of psychological wilderness, absoluteSUN
solitude, as in Ligeti's Magany (Solitude) and RobertSUN
Herrick's poem, 'His Change'. Then the programmeSUN
journeys into the quintessential Wilderness, the desert,SUN
in the words of Longfellow and Edward Hopper ('FountainsSUN
in the Wilderness') and music from Messiaen's DesSUN
Canyons aux Etoiles. The haunting slow movement of VaughanSUN
Williams' 'Pastoral Symphony' underpins the romanticSUN
visions of wilderness expressed in Wordsworth's 'OnSUN
the Sight of a manse in the south of Scotland' and JohnSUN
Clare's 'Bird o' the wilderness.' Finally, weSUN
return to wilderness as home, to Elizabeth Brown'sSUN
'Spiritual Land' of the Australian Outback and CharlieSUN
McMahon's Ephemeral Lakes for didgeridoo.SUN
SUN
Because the programme is a continuous journey throughSUN
different ideas of wilderness, the beginnings and ends ofSUN
some of the music are blurred. There are also soundSUN
effects taken from the tundra, deserts and ice lands;SUN
howling arctic winds and footsteps in snow.SUN

Translating Foreign PoetryMON
As part of BBC Poetry Season, Philip Dodd presents poemsMON
newly translated into English by Radio 3's Ian McMillan.MON
MON
Whenever the poet finds himself overseas, Ian always makesMON
the effort to seek out the local poetry, the way othersMON
seek out seaside rock, local carpets or car stickers. HeMON
buys a choice volume by the writer that most takes hisMON
fancy - and brings it back for his home bookshelves. HisMON
aim is to one day compose his own English-language versionMON
of the best of these foreign poets - and spread the wordMON
within these shores.MON
MON
Night Waves gives him a first chance for his mission. IanMON
creates two new poems from literal translations intoMON
English. He can't reveal his choices, but Ian's message isMON
clear - alongside the BBC's celebration of historicalMON
British giants like Donne and Milton and our impressiveMON
raft of contemporary poets working in the UK, let's alsoMON

JW WaterhouseTUE
Matthew Sweet discusses the Pre-Raphaelite artist JWTUE
Waterhouse, famous for his paintings of female charactersTUE
from mythology and literature. His work has been given aTUE
retrospective at London's Royal Academy, the firstTUE
large-scale one since the 1970s.TUE
TUE
John William Waterhouse (1849-1917) was one of the mostTUE
successful and critically praised Victorian artists, andTUE
was interested in antiquarianism, occultism and ideas ofTUE
the 'New Woman'.TUE
TUE
One of his best known works is The Lady of Shalott, aTUE
study of Elaine of Astolat, who dies of grief having beenTUE
spurned by Sir Lancelot. The painting of the longTUE
flame-haired woman distraught and floating down the streamTUE
in a boat has become an iconic image reproduced onTUE
countless posters and calendars. Waterhouse actuallyTUE
painted three versions of this character, in 1888, 1894TUE
and 1916.TUE
TUE
Another favourite subject was Ophelia, who was alsoTUE
depicted just before her death, putting flowers in herTUE
hair as she sits on a tree branch leaning over a lake.TUE
Waterhouse submitted his Ophelia painting of 1888 in orderTUE
to receive his diploma from the Royal Academy. It is nowTUE
owned by Lord Lloyd-Webber.TUE

CivilisationWED
Bidisha looks at what it means to be civilised, and asksWED
whether civilisation is an outdated concept. She talks toWED
philosopher John Armstrong, who calls for a new debateWED
about civilisation. According to Armstrong, we no longerWED
talk seriously about civilisation.WED
WED
The idea has been tainted by history, he argues, beingWED
eagerly invoked to justify colonial expansion. The viewWED
that industrially developed countries had a mission toWED
rule less developed societies was facilitated byWED
deployment of the term 'civilisation'. More recently, inWED
an effort to get America to back the war in Iraq, George WWED
Bush talked of 'a struggle for civilisation'.WED
WED
Armstrong champions an unfashionable campaign to reviveWED
the meaning of civilisation. He argues that the idea is aWED
way of reconnecting grand, societal forces - economicWED
liberty and social freedom - which will lead to a culturalWED
renaissance.WED

Landmarks - The Second SexTHU
Rana Mitter hosts a Landmark special celebrating the 60thTHU
anniversary of Simone de Beauvoir's book The Second Sex,THU
regarded by many as the bible of modern feminism.THU
THU
French writer and feminist philosopher Simone de BeauvoirTHU
is one of the most important figures in 20th-centuryTHU
thought. One half of the most famous intellectual coupleTHU
of the 20th century, de Beauvoir's life was as fascinatingTHU
as her writing. She often used her complex relationshipTHU
with Jean-Paul Sartre - which included a ménage à troisTHU
and numerous lovers on both sides - as inspiration for herTHU
work.THU
THU
Since its publication in France in 1949, The Second SexTHU
has shaped debates and thinking about gender, anticipatingTHU
the sexually-charged feminism of Erica Jong and GermaineTHU
Greer. De Beauvoir's central case was that 'one is notTHU
born a woman, but becomes one'. Throughout history, sheTHU
said, women have been defined as the 'other' sex, theTHU
'second sex', and an aberration from the 'normal' maleTHU
sex. With these arguments De Beauvoir led the way towardsTHU
the explosion of new wave of feminism after 1968.THU
THU
Now, at a time when feminism's future is in the balance,THU
Rana and guests go back to The Second Sex. At 60 yearsTHU
old, what has it got to say about gender politics today?THU
What would de Beauvoir make of contemporary attitudes toTHU
gender in France, where a raw nerve was exposed recentlyTHU
when the Minister of Justice Rachida Dati returned to workTHU
just five days after giving birth?THU
THU
How has the publication of de Beauvoir's correspondenceTHU
shed new light on how her private behaviour matched herTHU
public declarations?THU
