With contributions from fellow tenors Ian SAT Bostridge and Robert Tear. SAT SAT Plus the latest research on the politcal life of Leonard SAT Bernstein against the backdrop of the Cold War, and SAT baritone Thomas Hampson discussing his Song of America SAT project. SAT SAT Thomas Hampson and American Song SAT SAT The baritone Thomas Hampson is a huge champion of American SAT Song and this week gave Music Matters a private SAT performance, in one of the rehearsals rooms at the Royal SAT Opera House, where he's singing the part of Germont in a SAT star-studded La Traviata. He sang three American songs, SAT excerpts from all of which can be heard tomorrow. Thomas SAT tells Tom how, through his aptly named Hampsong SAT Foundation, he is currently promoting his Song of America SAT project, an idea he's working on with the Library of SAT Congress in Washington to celebrate the 250th anniversary SAT of the first ever art-song to be written on American soil. SAT Hampson is touring the US with a veritable smorgasbord of SAT American song later this year and explains to Tom his SAT passionate belief that you can hear America's history SAT and identity through its songs, from Burleigh to Barber, SAT from Foster to Rorem. SAT SAT Thomas Hampson can be heard singing Germont in La Traviata SAT at the Royal Opera House in London until the 6th July. SAT SAT Leonard Bernstein SAT SAT The composer, conductor and pianist Leonard Bernstein is SAT the focus of a new book by Barry Seldes which explores SAT Bernstein's life and music through the prism of his SAT political convictions. Whilst some of Bernstein's public SAT politicking is common knowledge, such as his concert in SAT Berlin after the fall of the Wall for example, Seldes SAT argues his social and political views drove his whole SAT career. His arguments are based on the 400 000 pages of SAT the Bernstein archive at the Library of Congress and the SAT release a few years ago of the FBI's 600-page file on SAT Bernstein. He was blacklisted and his passport was SAT confiscated because he was a known left-wing sympathiser SAT in the 40s and 50s. Living through the McCarthyite SAT witch-hunts left its mark on his life. Barry Seldes and SAT other Bernstein experts talk to Tom about how Bernstein SAT fought for gay rights, Israel, and AIDS research, and how SAT he became increasingly frustrated by America's SAT right-wing politics in the 70s and 80s. SAT SAT 'Leonard Bernstein: the Political Life of an American SAT Musician' by Barry Seldes is published by the University SAT of California Press. SAT SAT John Potter's 'Tenor: History of a Voice' SAT SAT Music Matters returns to the topic of song with John SAT Potter's new book on the tenor voice which claims to be SAT a comprehensive history of that exotic breed of singer SAT that still seems to captivate us more than any other SAT operatic voice-type. It's not just Pavarotti and the SAT Three Tenors. Tom talks to John Potter, a tenor himself, SAT about how the tenor voice developed from humble beginnings SAT in medieval music to become the blue-riband vocal virtuoso SAT of Italian and German opera. Music Matters has also SAT enlisted two of Britian's best-loved tenors, Ian SAT Bostridge and Robert Tear, to join Tom in reviewing the SAT book. SAT SAT John Potter's 'Tenor: History of a Voice' is SAT published by Yale University Press. SAT SAT Perelandra SAT SAT Donald Swann is perhaps best known for his part in the SAT song-writing duo Flanders and Swann but Music Matters this SAT week looks at one of his lesser known, but larger scale SAT works, the opera Perelandra, based on the allegorical SAT novel by C.S. Lewis. Thanks to the efforts of Swann's SAT friends and colleagues Leon Berger and Jonathan Butcher, SAT it's being given a chance to be heard in public again, SAT for the first time in more than four decades. Tom visits SAT the rehearsals to talk to Leon Berger and Jonathan Butcher SAT and gets a sneak preview of the opera. SAT SAT Perelandra is being performed at the Sheldonian Theatre, SAT Oxford on Friday 26th June, and also has a chamber SAT performance at Keble College Chapel, Oxford on Thursday SAT 25th June. SAT SAT 13:00 The Early Music Show b00l1qfy (Listen) SAT The Great Schism SAT Catherine Bott explores the music of the Great Schism of SAT Western Christianity, which divided the Catholic Church SAT between 1378 and 1417. SUN SUN 22:15 Words and Music b00l1r7c (Listen) SUN Ideas of Wilderness SUN SUN 'Wilderness' conjures up images of vast uncultivated SUN planes, the endless sand-dunes or rock-formations in the SUN deserts, the vast expanses of the ice lands, the immensity SUN of oceans, the jagged peaks of colossal mountains and also SUN the rolling hills, tranquil lakes and verdant forests of SUN lowland countryside. 'Wilderness' is a place kept SUN wild, seemingly untouched by the progress of SUN civilizations. Or is it? SUN SUN As consciousness about the environment increases, what is SUN perceived to be 'wilderness' is becoming more fragile. SUN The idea of wilderness is not as fixed as it might first SUN seem and depends on perceived relationships between SUN humankind and nature. These relationships are culturally SUN determined and the idea of wilderness is not only SUN man-made, but also plural. There is a clear distinction SUN between the Eastern (Taoist) and Western ideas of SUN wilderness. Whereas Western writers understand wilderness SUN as otherness, something apart from humankind, and as a SUN metaphysical aspiration, Ancient Chinese poets express the SUN oneness of human life and wilderness. SUN SUN This edition of Words and Music is a journey through SUN different ideas of wilderness that begins and ends with SUN the idea of wilderness as home, whether in the vast Taoist SUN ('cosmological') tradition of wilderness literature, or SUN the romantic western idea of wilderness as a refuge from SUN the city, a place of outstanding natural beauty and, SUN ultimately, a symbol of freedom. At the outset of the SUN journey, Chia Tao's 'Evening Landscape, Clearing SUN Snow' is juxtaposed with Coleridge's 'Frost at SUN Midnight' and accompanied by Paul Reade's Aspects of SUN Landscape for solo oboe and Redolfi's Mare Teno for SUN ondes Martenot. Paul Reade's Aspects of Landscape return SUN at the end of the programme under T'ao Ch'ien's SUN 'Home again among Fields and Gardens'. SUN SUN The programme explores the preservation of what we SUN perceive to be wild places through the 1964 US Wilderness SUN Act, the eco-writing of Robinson Jeffers and Hopkins' SUN 'Inversnaid'. Wilderness is also hostile, as described SUN by Shackleton and Auden, and accompanied by the austere SUN Largo from Shostakovich's String Quartet No.8. There is SUN also an idea of psychological wilderness, absolute SUN solitude, as in Ligeti's Magany (Solitude) and Robert SUN Herrick's poem, 'His Change'. Then the programme SUN journeys into the quintessential Wilderness, the desert, SUN in the words of Longfellow and Edward Hopper ('Fountains SUN in the Wilderness') and music from Messiaen's Des SUN Canyons aux Etoiles. The haunting slow movement of Vaughan SUN Williams' 'Pastoral Symphony' underpins the romantic SUN visions of wilderness expressed in Wordsworth's 'On SUN the Sight of a manse in the south of Scotland' and John SUN Clare's 'Bird o' the wilderness.' Finally, we SUN return to wilderness as home, to Elizabeth Brown's SUN 'Spiritual Land' of the Australian Outback and Charlie SUN McMahon's Ephemeral Lakes for didgeridoo. SUN SUN Because the programme is a continuous journey through SUN different ideas of wilderness, the beginnings and ends of SUN some of the music are blurred. There are also sound SUN effects taken from the tundra, deserts and ice lands; SUN howling arctic winds and footsteps in snow. His work has been given a TUE retrospective at London's Royal Academy, the first TUE large-scale one since the 1970s. TUE TUE John William Waterhouse (1849-1917) was one of the most TUE successful and critically praised Victorian artists, and TUE was interested in antiquarianism, occultism and ideas of TUE the 'New Woman'. TUE TUE One of his best known works is The Lady of Shalott, a TUE study of Elaine of Astolat, who dies of grief having been TUE spurned by Sir Lancelot. The painting of the long TUE flame-haired woman distraught and floating down the stream TUE in a boat has become an iconic image reproduced on TUE countless posters and calendars. Waterhouse actually TUE painted three versions of this character, in 1888, 1894 TUE and 1916. TUE TUE Another favourite subject was Ophelia, who was also TUE depicted just before her death, putting flowers in her TUE hair as she sits on a tree branch leaning over a lake. TUE Waterhouse submitted his Ophelia painting of 1888 in order TUE to receive his diploma from the Royal Academy. It is now TUE owned by Lord Lloyd-Webber. THU THU French writer and feminist philosopher Simone de Beauvoir THU is one of the most important figures in 20th-century THU thought. One half of the most famous intellectual couple THU of the 20th century, de Beauvoir's life was as fascinating THU as her writing. She often used her complex relationship THU with Jean-Paul Sartre - which included a ménage à trois THU and numerous lovers on both sides - as inspiration for her THU work. THU THU Since its publication in France in 1949, The Second Sex THU has shaped debates and thinking about gender, anticipating THU the sexually-charged feminism of Erica Jong and Germaine THU Greer. De Beauvoir's central case was that 'one is not THU born a woman, but becomes one'. Throughout history, she THU said, women have been defined as the 'other' sex, the THU 'second sex', and an aberration from the 'normal' male THU sex. With these arguments De Beauvoir led the way towards THU the explosion of new wave of feminism after 1968. THU THU Now, at a time when feminism's future is in the balance, THU Rana and guests go back to The Second Sex. At 60 years THU old, what has it got to say about gender politics today? THU What would de Beauvoir make of contemporary attitudes to THU gender in France, where a raw nerve was exposed recently THU when the Minister of Justice Rachida Dati returned to work THU just five days after giving birth? THU THU How has the publication of de Beauvoir's correspondence THU shed new light on how her private behaviour matched her THU public declarations?
