SAT SAT Lucie also goes to the Vienna home of Michael Brussing - SAT baryton player with the Esterhazy Ensemble, who have SAT recently released their recordings of Haydn's complete SAT baryton trios. SAT SAT Haydn entered the service of the Esterhazys in 1761, when SAT he was hired as the vice-Kapellmeister by Prince Paul SAT Anton, for their home in Eisenstadt. Initially, his main SAT duties were to conduct the orchestra and to play the SAT harpsichord and violin, but he was also required to act as SAT librarian, supervisor of instruments, tutor and SAT intermediary between the musicians and the Prince as well SAT as composing on a daily basis. SAT SAT Officially, Haydn was supposedly subservient to the SAT elderly Kapellmeister Gregor Werner, but it wasn't long SAT before he became the main man, and when Prince Paul Anton SAT died in 1762, Haydn became one of the most important SAT servants at the court of the new Prince Nikolaus 'The SAT Magnificent'. SAT SAT Just four years later, Prince Nikolaus designed and built SAT his new palace, and it was during the ever-increasing SAT 'summer' months there that Haydn began to flourish - SAT composing most of his early symphonies as well as chamber SAT music for the Prince's favourite instrument, the baryton. SAT SAT 18:00 Opera on 3 b00ldj7v (Listen) SAT Opera on 3 from the Royal Opera House, Wagner's Lohengrin SAT From the Royal Opera House, Covent Garden, Donald Macleod SAT introduces a performance of Wagner's Lohengrin, starring SAT South African tenor Johan Botha, with soprano Edith Haller SAT as Elsa. SAT SAT It is a work which marked a turning point in Wagner's SAT output and paved the way for the quartet of Ring operas SAT that were to come. In it he wrote four challenging roles SAT that have tested singers (and conductors) since the work's SAT first performance in 1850. SAT SAT Lohengrin has been Elsa's champion in a duel but has sworn SAT her to secrecy about his origins. She must never ask his SAT name or where he comes from. Not unnaturally she finds SAT this promise impossible to keep and so he has to leave, SAT though not before revealing to one and all that he is, in SAT fact, a knight of the holy grail with a sacred mission. SAT Having imparted this information he leaves as he arrived, SAT in a boat drawn by a swan. SUN SUN Prince Nikolaus Esterhazy 'The Magnificent' was very proud SUN of his new 'summer residence', in which he spent more time SUN each year. At any opportunity, he would welcome SUN influential politicians, wealthy nobles and royalty to his SUN beautiful palace, laying on lavish feasts and SUN entertainments, for which Haydn composed most of his SUN operas and burlettas, either for the main theatre or for SUN the palace's marionettes. SUN SUN By now, the Prince had relaxed his initial stance on SUN exclusivity, and permitted Haydn to fulfil commissions SUN from external sources. This allowed his famous composer to SUN write the Seven Last Words for Cadiz Cathedral, and a SUN number of pieces for the King of Naples, who was a devotee SUN of a rather bizarre instrument - the lira organizzata - SUN apparently a hybrid of a chamber organ and a hurdy-gurdy. SUN Lucie visits the workshop of the Austrian instrument-maker SUN Wolfgang Weichselbaumer, who has built two lire SUN organizzate, heard on a recording made by the Ensemble SUN Baroque de Limoges and Christophe Coin. SUN SUN As the 1780s drew to a close, Haydn began to feel more and SUN more isolated at Esterhazy, but could never quite bring SUN himself to leave its security. But in 1790, Prince SUN Nikolaus died; his heir and successor, Prince Anton was SUN not a music lover and immediately disbanded the orchestra. SUN He granted Haydn his freedom, but asked him to retain his SUN official title of Kapellmeister to Prince Esterhazy. Thus SUN began a new chapter in Haydn's life and career, which took SUN him to London and Vienna, enjoying his newly discovered SUN fame. She describes how the famous SUN twinned border towns of El Paso/Ciudad Juarez, Nogales SUN Arizona/Nogales Sonora, San Diego/Tijuana have been SUN changed by the militarisation of the border. SUN SUN Once a romantic and sleepy backwater, the border is now SUN regarded by many as a low-grade war zone and the most SUN dangerous frontier on earth, as drugs and people are SUN smuggled north and guns move south. It runs from the Gulf SUN of Mexico to the Pacific Ocean - through some of the most SUN remote and dangerous terrain in the world - and has been SUN the setting for the world's biggest modern migration. Some SUN 12 million Mexican-born people now live in America, many SUN of them illegally, and the number is set to rise SUN significantly. SUN SUN She travels with the border patrol in search of the SUN traditional desert crossings. The programme observes the SUN wall in its fully-fortified might as it divides the cities SUN of Tijuana and San Diego, and finds it again in the middle SUN of an Indian Reservation, cutting the traditional desert SUN tribal lands in half. What role has this border played in SUN the American imagination and how does it play out in the SUN cultures on both sides? SUN SUN Claudine judges how well the new wall has worked in SUN keeping check on the drug traffic and she reports on how SUN this multi-million dollar divide has changed the habits SUN and fortunes of the illegal migrants. Why do so many SUN continue to die in agony and desperation in the American SUN wilderness? SUN SUN 22:15 Words and Music b00ldrnw (Listen) SUN Song for Ireland SUN SUN This week's edition of Words and Music take the theme of SUN Ireland. SUN Renowned Irish actors, Lorcan Cranitch and Orla Charlton SUN read a wide range of poetry and prose from the 9th century SUN to the present day. The programme explores the identity of SUN the Irish through their landscape. Seamus Heaney's SUN Bogland sits alongside the 9th century poem Toward Winter. SUN PJ Kavanagh's Schancoduff and Heaney's Digging look at SUN the handing down of traditions and the connection with the SUN landscape. The backdrop is the turbulent history of SUN Ireland: Rising of the Moon read by both actors, is an SUN Irish ballad referring to the outbreak of the 1798 SUN rebellion in county Kildare as United Irish rebels convey SUN the order to rise. SUN SUN The air of hope and optimism associated with the SUN ultimately doomed rebellion was intended to provide SUN inspiration for rebels. An Buachaillin Ban is a SUN revolutionary song but subtlely disguised as a love song. SUN Derek Mahon's Derry Morning looks at contemporary city SUN life and Paul Durcan's Going home to Mayo the pull to SUN the countryside away from the daylight nightmare of SUN Dublin city. The wide variety of music includes the SUN unmistakeable, Liam O'Flynn on Uillean pipes, Bax's SUN tone poem Moy Mell (The Happy Plain) played by Ashley Wass SUN and Martin Roscoe, a new recording The Celtic Viol by SUN Jordi Savall and John Cage's evocation of a Irish circus SUN in Roratorio, a chaotic but exuberant blending of natural SUN sounds with musical fragments and words by James Joyce. SUN SUN The programme has a melancholy air through the haunting SUN voice of Illar O Lionaird, Tomas O Caniann's lament for SUN Francey and Henry Newbolt's 'Ireland, Ireland, green SUN and sad', celebrating the beauty of the landscape but SUN also plaintive and poignant.
