SAT SAT 12:15 Music Matters b00lfhlm (Listen) SAT Debussy, Saariaho and perceptions of classical music SAT SAT Tom Service investigates the story of Debussy's Pelléas et SAT Mélisande through the lives of the women so closely SAT involved in the opera's creation, as a new book examining SAT the work is published. SAT SAT As Kaija Saariaho's opera L'Amour de loin opens at English SAT National Opera, Tom meets the composer and the director SAT Daniele Finzi Pasca. SAT SAT Sound artist Martin Parker discusses his new works for SAT headphones, designed specially for locations around East SAT Neuk in Scotland. SAT SAT Tom explores perceptions of classical music with the help SAT of BBC 6 Music's Chris Hawkins. SAT SAT Debussy's Mélisande SAT SAT Georgette Leblanc, Mary Garden, and Maggie Teyte - three SAT of the twentieth century's most intriguing sopranos - SAT found their personal and musical lives bound up with SAT Claude Debussy's and playwright Maurice Maeterlinck's SAT ethereal creation Pélleas et Mélisande. As SAT Maeterlinck's mistress and one of the most striking SAT singers of her time, Leblanc considered herself first in SAT line for the role of Mélisande, but Debussy chose instead SAT the Scottish-born Mary Garden. From the first performances SAT in 1902, Garden defined the role for many years in Paris, SAT until Maggie Teyte took up the part late in Debussy's SAT life. SAT SAT A new book by Gillian Opstad reveals the reason for the SAT singers' obsession with the idealised role of SAT Mélisande. Tom explores the myths and realities behind SAT the stories with the author and musicologists Karen Henson SAT and Barbara Kelly, and singer Maria Ewing shares her own SAT experience of the role. SAT SAT Debussy's Mélisande by Gillian Opstad is published by SAT Boydell Press (hardback £30.00) SAT SAT L'Amour de loin (Love from afar) SAT SAT Finnish composer Kaija Saariaho's opera L'Amour de SAT loin (Love from afar) is all about idealised love. A SAT medieval troubadour in southern France dreams of his SAT perfect woman, and a pilgrim tells him that she exists in SAT Tripoli; he travels over the Mediterranean to see her, but SAT the journey is too much for him and he dies in her arms. SAT Saariaho's sensual music, a rich combination of SAT orchestral and electronic textures, makes the interior SAT psychological narrative of the story come alive. SAT SAT As the opera receives its first UK production at English SAT National Opera, Tom talks to Saariaho about the ideas of SAT obsession and infatuation in the opera, and to the SAT director Daniele Finzi Pasca about his use of acrobats and SAT dancers to translate the music into movement. SAT SAT Kaija Saariaho's L'Amour de loin (Love from afar) runs SAT until 11th July at English National Opera SAT SAT Music and Personal Space SAT SAT Electro-acoustic composer Martin Parker has used the SAT concept of personal listening to create a series of new SAT works for the East Neuk Festival in Fife, Scotland. The SAT pieces have been designed to be listened to on headphones SAT in locations around East Neuk - a cave once inhabited by SAT a hermit-like saint, a coastline with views across the SAT Forth, and the mysteriously spiritual Dunino Den. From SAT this last location Martin talks to Tom about the unique SAT private experiences which he hopes will open listeners' SAT ears to the environment around them. SAT SAT According to Daniel Levitin in his new book 'The World SAT in Six Songs' the evolution of music is inextricably SAT linked to its social context - its power to create SAT communities. He describes what he believes are the six SAT kinds of 'song' which have, over tens of thousands of SAT years, defined the role of music in our human identity - SAT Friendship, Joy, Comfort, Knowledge, Religion and Love. SAT Even now in the age of the personal iPod he believes music SAT has power to bring people together. SAT SAT Martin Parker's new works are available for download SAT from the East Neuk Festival's website. The Festival runs SAT until tomorrow 5th July SAT SAT The World in Six Songs by Daniel Levitin is published by SAT Aurum Press (paperback £14.99) SAT SAT Perceptions of Classical Music SAT SAT On BBC Radio 5 live earlier this year, Tom and 6Music's SAT Chris Hawkins debated the view that classical music is an SAT exclusive art-form enjoyed mainly by 'old posh SAT people'. In an attempt to dispel his misconceptions, Tom SAT took Chris to his first classical concert - SAT Beethoven's 9th Symphony with the Royal Philharmonic SAT Orchestra. Chris's reaction says much about wider SAT society's perception of classical music. SAT SAT The view of classical music as exclusive and intimidating SAT poses hard questions for those who work in the industry SAT - about how to break down barriers and communicate the SAT power of the music to new audiences. To debate the issues SAT and search for answers, Tom is joined by Kathryn McDowell SAT from the London Symphony Orchestra and Alex Poots from the SAT Manchester International Festival. SAT SAT The Manchester International Festival runs until Sunday SAT 19th July SAT SAT 13:00 The Early Music Show b00lfhlp (Listen) SAT Music for the Founding Fathers SAT Lucie Skeaping explores music that was being performed SAT during the time of the Founding Fathers, in 18th-century SAT colonial America. SAT SAT With the appearance of the Bay Psalter by the Pilgrim SAT Fathers - the first book to be published in America - SAT through to the popular melodies of the War of SAT Independence, it is sometimes thought that early American SAT music is little more than Puritan hymns and marches for SAT fife and drum. But Lucie argues that the music of early SAT America was rich and varied, an interesting composite SAT spawned by the many disenfranchised immigrants that SAT arrived on the country's shores. SAT SAT The programme looks back on the music of characters such SAT as William Billings, one of the country's important SAT homegrown composers; the important role that the Moravian SAT people made in shaping the nation's music; and the SAT significant musical role that some of the Founding Fathers SAT themselves played - in particular Thomas Jefferson, SAT Benjamin Franklin and Francis Hopkinson. Lucie also looks SAT back on the origin of tunes such as Yankee Doodle and SAT Stars and Stripes Forever. SAT SAT With the appearance of the Bay Psalter by the 17th Century SAT Pilgrim Fathers - the first book to be published in SAT America - through to the popular melodies of the War of SAT Independence, it is sometimes thought that early American SAT music is little more than Puritan hymns and marches for SAT fife and drum. SUN SUN 22:30 Words and Music b00lfp6b (Listen) SUN In the Microscope SUN SUN For this week's Words and Music I've chosen poetry and SUN prose on the theme of science: astronomy, the chemistry SUN lab, the pleasures of technology, biology, palaeontology, SUN the beauty of mathematics. SUN SUN 'In the Microscope' begins with Ennio Morricone's SUN 'Galileo' with Emily Dickinson's 'A Science so the SUN savants say'. Thomas Hardy's 'Heredity' is heard SUN with Holst's 'Lament' from his 'Double Concerto SUN for two violins and orchestra', conducted by his SUN daughter Imogen, herself a composer and musician. The SUN science of astronomy is heard in Takemitsu's SUN 'Orion', in Fleur Adcock's 'The Ex-queen among the SUN Astronomers' and in Robert Frost's 'On looking up by SUN chance at the Constellations'. SUN SUN Robert Frost was a poet with a life long interest in SUN science. At school he had a part-time job selling magazine SUN subscriptions so that he could afford a telescope. Then, SUN teaching at Amherst, he became friends with the Nobel SUN Prize winning Danish physicist Niels Bohr, a relationship SUN which developed his fascination with atomic structure. SUN SUN A passage from Mary Shelley's 'Frankenstein' in SUN which the monster comes to life is heard with the SUN 'Elegia' from Bartok's 'Concerto for Orchestra' SUN in which the composer used the 'golden section', a SUN mathematical underlying symmetrical structure. You'll SUN also hear part of 'Suite no 3 in C Major' by Bach, SUN another composer who made use of formal mathematical SUN patterns. SUN SUN The Italian writer Primo Levi worked as a chemist all his SUN life. 'In the Microscope' ends with one of the last SUN poems he wrote before his suicide in Turin in 1987. SUN 'Almanac', a bleak poem about man's capacity to SUN destroy the planet is heard alongside 'Pestilence' SUN from Arthur Bliss' great score from the 1936 film SUN 'Things to Come', adapted from H.G. It touches on WED the labours, lovemaking, hardships and celebrations of an WED unspecified community of peasants, who are given rousing WED choral passages, including a celebration of wine and a WED hunting chorus. Armstrong argues that 'new atheists' have WED constructed a caricature of religion that is dangerous, WED that for the first time in history many millions of people WED want nothing to do with God, and that mainstream theology WED is largely to blame for this crisis of faith. WED WED A former nun, Armstrong has been a vociferous contributor WED to debates about religion since rising to prominence in WED the 1980s with television documentaries such The First WED Christian (1984) - a six-part series on St Paul - and her WED books including The Gospel According to Women (1988) and A WED History of God (1993). Herschel's 40-foot telescope was the WED biggest in the world, and while looking through it Haydn WED would doubtless have learned something of Herschel's WED radical, potentially aetheistical theories on the WED formation of galaxies. Five years later, he composed his WED great oratorio The Creation, a seemingly unquestioning WED account of origins of the world as described in Genesis. THU THU 21:15 Night Waves b00lfqhs (Listen) THU Philip Dodd talks to political historian Timothy Garton THU Ash about Europe, 20 years on from the collapse of the THU Iron Curtain. THU THU In the 1980s, Garton Ash was living on the other side of THU the Berlin Wall - researching the lives of ordinary THU Germans. He went on to write one of the earliest books in THU English on the solidarity protests against communist THU Poland. In 1989, as the Wall came down, the historian was THU in Prague with Vaclav Havel for the Velvet Revolution. THU When Margaret Thatcher called together experts for an THU infamous meeting to decide on whether a reunified Germany THU was a threat to Britain, Garton Ash was there. THU THU As Europe's fortune has been transformed over the past 20 THU years - from divided continent to an enlarged European THU Union sweeping to the edge of Russia - Garton Ash has been THU one of the most informed and influential commentators on THU its fate - not only in London, but in Berlin, Warsaw and THU beyond. THU THU Today, much of former Communist Europe is mired in painful THU capitalist recession. Reunited Germany has a more THU self-interested air to its international outlook. After THU recent elections, many voters in even the federalist of THU European nations have taken on a sceptical - or even THU extremist - attitude. THU THU Philip Dodd asks Garton Ash how he sees the world 20 years THU after the events of 1989. THU THU For few among the great composers was humour such a vital THU part of their creative personality as for Haydn, who THU thought nothing of playing outrageous tricks on the THU audiences of his 'serious' works. False endings, sudden THU orchestral crashes, knockabout humour and rude noises in THU the woodwind section can still cause laughter in the THU concert hall today, while subtler jokes designed to appeal THU specifically to musicians also abound.
