SUN       In his influential essay The Metaphysical Poets, T. S.
SUN       Eliot brought about a revaluation and reassessment of
SUN       interest in a group of 17th Century poets who had been
SUN       neglected for a considerable time.
SUN       
SUN       He examined one by one the characteristics which are
SUN       generally considered ‘metaphysical’: the elaboration of
SUN       simile to the farthest possible extent, rapid association
SUN       of thought, compression and sudden contrasts of images.
SUN       
SUN       In his view their unique contribution was to unite thought
SUN       with feeling – something he called “Unification of
SUN       Sensibility” – a faculty which was lost in the age of
SUN       Milton and Dryden (who could think but not feel) and the
SUN       succeeding age of Tennyson and Browning (who could feel
SUN       but not think).
SUN       
SUN       Eliot also saw close connections between the complexity of
SUN       his own poetry and that of the Metaphysicals.
SUN       
SUN       This programme interlaces the five sections of Burnt
SUN       Norton (the 1st of Eliot’s Four Quartets) with music and
SUN       the metaphysical poetry of John Donne and Andrew Marvell
SUN       etc.
SUN       
SUN       Anna Massey reads the Eliot and Derek Jacobi reads the
SUN       Metaphysicals. They meet in the middle where both take
SUN       part in Andrew Marvell’s A Dialogue between the Soul and
SUN       the Body.
SUN       
SUN       In 1931 TS Eliot wrote to Stephen Spender: I have
SUN       Beethoven’s A minor Quartet on the gramophone, and I find
SUN       it quite inexhaustible to study. There is a sort of
SUN       heavenly, or at least more than human gaiety, about some
SUN       of his later things which one imagines might come to
SUN       oneself as the fruit of reconciliation and relief after
SUN       immense suffering; I should like to get something of that
SUN       into verse before I die.
SUN       
SUN       Eliot’s Four Quartets are to some extent inspired by this
SUN       quartet – the only Beethoven Quartet in 5 sections, as are
SUN       all four of the Eliot Quartets. Eliot said he wanted to
SUN       get beyond poetry, as Beethoven in his later works,
SUN       strove to get beyond music.
SUN       
SUN       The language and thought in the Four Quartets is so
SUN       elliptical and compressed that it would be inappropriate
SUN       and presumptuous to match the poetry and the music too
SUN       literally. The aim has been to allow the poetry to breath
SUN       by placing moments of musical reflection between the 5
SUN       sections of the poem. In some cases the music matches the
SUN       mood in others it provides a contrast. Below I have
SUN       suggested some tangential (possibly subconscious)
SUN       connections between the words and the music. However these
SUN       are entirely personal and hopefully the programme stands
SUN       on its own without a knowledge of these connections.

SUN       Section 1:
SUN       “Time present and time past / Are both perhaps present in
SUN       time future”
SUN       The opening section introduces the theme of time. The poem
SUN       considers the relationship between life in time, a life of
SUN       bondage and suffering, and life in eternity, freedom, and
SUN       happiness. This leads into the “Et vitam venturi” from
SUN       Beethoven’s Missa Solemnis. In this part of the Mass,
SUN       Christians look forward to the life to come when they will
SUN       live outside of Time. Beethoven constructs his fugue
SUN       subject out of a chain of descending thirds which return
SUN       to the original note – a concise emblem for eternal
SUN       recurrence in eternity.
SUN       
SUN       Section 2:    “Garlic and sapphires in the mud”
SUN       Eliot develops the theme of time and memory – “To be
SUN       conscious is not to be in time”. One of the central images
SUN       of the poem is the memory of a rose-garden with a pool.
SUN       Takemitsu’s Quotation of Dream plays with memories of
SUN       Debussy’s La Mer and transforms the material into a
SUN       Japanese flower-garden with a lake
SUN       
SUN       Section 3    “Here is a place of disaffection”
SUN       Eliot contrasts the redeemed time of eternity with the
SUN       bondage of temporal time where “time-ridden faces” are
SUN       “distracted from distraction by distraction.” In later
SUN       years he admitted that the section beginning “Descend
SUN       lower, descend only / Into the world of perpetual
SUN       solitude” was inspired by the London Underground, “a place
SUN       of disaffection” where “the world moves / In appetency, on
SUN       its metalled ways / Of time past and time future.” John
SUN       Adams’ Short Ride in a Fast Machine suggests the
SUN       mechanistic world of fast travel and machines – though he
SUN       possibly found it more exhilarating that Eliot.

SUN       Section 4    “Time and the bell have buried the day”
SUN       Much of the inspiration behind the Four Quartets came from
SUN       Eastern philosophy with its emphasis in eternal recurrence
SUN       and withdrawal from the temporal world of will and
SUN       illusion. In this section the poet withdraws into the
SUN       world of night where “the light is still / At the still
SUN       point of the turning world.” The 4th movement of Mahler’s
SUN       3rd Symphony is a setting of a passage from Nietzsche’s
SUN       Also sprach Zarathustra in which the Eastern prophet
SUN       Zarathustra meditates on Night and Eternity
SUN       
SUN       Section 5    “Words move, music moves / Only in time”
SUN       Eliot explores the connection between music and time. The
SUN       idea that music exists both inside and outside of time. In
SUN       other words we experience music through time but it also
SUN       exists as an abstract concept outside of time – “the end
SUN       precedes the beginning, / And the end and the beginning
SUN       were always there / before the beginning and after the
SUN       end.” We end with the poem’s inspiration, the last section
SUN       of the central movement from Beethoven’s late A minor
SUN       quartet in which for pages time itself seems masterfully
SUN       suspended.

SUN       Bobby Hutcherson is one of the few jazz musicians who is
SUN       comfortable in both free and straight ahead jazz. Born on
SUN       the West Coast of America in the early 1940s, Hutcherson
SUN       was soon exposed to jazz through family connections. After
SUN       formal education, he played with local jazz musicians Les
SUN       McCann, Charles Lloyd, Paul Bley, Scott LaFaro and Curtis
SUN       Amy. During the 1990s and to the present day, Hutcherson
SUN       has made fewer recordings, although he has kept up a
SUN       steady touring schedule. Recently, he has been a member of
SUN       the San Francisco Jazz Collective with fellow icons Brian
SUN       Blade, Joshua Redman and Nicholas Peyton.
