Having started learning SAT piano and composing as a young boy, Benjamin went on to SAT study under Oliver Messiaen in Paris at the age of 16. His SAT intense, poetic music is held in high regard in the French SAT capital, but he has gained a worldwide reputation as one SAT of the foremost figures in contemporary music. SAT SAT Fauré’s Songs SAT SAT Gabriel Fauré, best known for his Requiem, was also a SAT prolific writer of chamber music and songs, with an output SAT spanning six decades of his life, much of his most SAT profound music written in old age. Graham Johnson, one of SAT the world’s most famous song accompanists, has been a SAT long-time advocate of Fauré, and in a new book has set out SAT to share his passion for the composer’s unique musical SAT language, and to set it in historical context. SAT SAT At the piano, Graham Johnson tells Tom why he is so SAT intoxicated by Fauré’s writing for the voice, and how a SAT complicated private life and the parallel lives of his SAT many poets influenced his music. SAT SAT Tchaikovsky SAT SAT Roland John Wiley of Michigan University believes there SAT are a few problems in the popular perception of Pyotr SAT Ilyich Tchaikovsky and his music: that he is incorrectly SAT viewed as a melodic sentimentalist – or sentimental SAT melodist – and that debates over his sexuality, his SAT disastrous marriage and his mysterious death have clouded SAT people’s judgement of his work. SAT SAT In a new biography, Wiley offers a re-assessment of SAT Tchaikovsky’s life and music. Tom talks to the author, and SAT is joined to review the book by Marina Frolova-Walker of SAT Cambridge University, and writer and broadcaster Geoffrey SAT Norris. SAT SAT The story centres on the Marschallin, who enjoys time with SAT her young lover Octavian, but knows that she is getting SAT older and that one day he will lose interest in her. Sure SAT enough, when he is chosen to deliver the engagement silver SAT rose from the Baron Ochs to Sophie, they fall instantly in SAT love with each other. The Marschallin understands the SAT situation and graciously lets Octavian go to his new love. SAT Strauss's masterpiece contains comedy, pathos and some SAT sumptuous female vocal writing. SAT SAT Synopsis - Act 1 SAT SAT Vienna, the early years of the reign of the Empress Maria SAT Theresa. The Marschallin, Princess von Werdenberg, has SAT spent the night with her young lover, Octavian, Count SAT Rofrano. SAT SAT He hides when a page brings breakfast, then again when SAT loud voices are heard in the antechamber. The unexpected SAT visitor is the Marschallin’s country cousin, Baron Ochs SAT auf Lerchenau. SAT SAT Bursting into the room, he brags about his amorous SAT conquests and his upcoming marriage to Sophie von Faninal, SAT the young daughter of a wealthy bourgeois. SAT SAT When he asks the Marschallin for advice as to which SAT cavalier could present Sophie with the traditional silver SAT engagement rose, she suggests Octavian—who suddenly, to SAT avoid discovery, emerges from his hiding place disguised SAT as a chambermaid. SAT SAT The baron instantly starts to make advances towards SAT “Mariandel,” who quickly makes her escape as the room SAT fills with the daily crowd of petitioners and salespeople. SAT Among them is an Italian singer, whose aria (“Di rigori SAT armato il seno”) is cut short by the baron’s wrangling SAT SAT The baron hires a pair of Italian intriguers, Annina and SAT Valzacchi, to locate the shy servant girl. SAT SAT When the room is cleared, the Marschallin, appalled by the SAT thought of the rude Ochs marrying the innocent young girl, SAT muses on her own waning youth (“Da geht er hin”). SAT SAT The returning Octavian is surprised to find her in a SAT distant and melancholy mood. He passionately declares his SAT love but she can only think about the passing of time and SAT tells him that one day he will leave her for a younger SAT woman (“Die Zeit, die ist ein sonderbar Ding”). SAT SAT Hurt, he rushes off. The Marschallin tries to call him SAT back, but it is too late. She summons her page and sends SAT Octavian the silver rose. SAT SAT Act 2 SAT SAT On the morning of her engagement, Sophie excitedly awaits SAT the arrival of the cavalier of the rose. Octavian enters SAT and presents her with the silver rose on behalf of the SAT baron. SAT SAT Sophie accepts rapturously, and the two young people feel SAT an instant attraction to each other (Duet: “Wo war ich SAT schon einmal”). SAT SAT When Ochs, whom Sophie has never met, arrives, the girl is SAT shocked by his crude manners. The baron goes off to SAT discuss the wedding contract with Faninal, and Sophie asks SAT Octavian for help. They end up embracing and are surprised SAT by Annina and Valzacchi, who summon the baron. SAT SAT The outraged Octavian grazes the baron’s arm with his SAT rapier and Ochs melodramatically calls for a doctor. In SAT the ensuing confusion, Sophie tells her father that she SAT will not marry the baron, while Octavian enlists Annina SAT and Valzacchi to participate in an intrigue he is hatching. SAT SAT When Ochs is alone, nursing his wound with a glass of SAT wine, Annina, sent by Octavian, appears with a letter from SAT “Mariandel,” asking the baron to a rendezvous. SAT SAT Intoxicated with his own charm, Ochs is delighted at the SAT prospect of a tête-à-tête. When he refuses to tip Annina, SAT she determines to get even. SAT SAT Act 3 SAT SAT At Octavian’s instigation, Annina and Valzacchi prepare SAT the back room of a dingy inn for Ochs’s rendezvous. Before SAT long, the baron and “Mariandel” arrive for a private SAT supper. SAT SAT As she coyly leads him on, grotesque apparitions pop out SAT of windows and secret panels, terrifying the baron. SAT Annina, disguised as a widow, runs in crying that Ochs is SAT the father of her many children. SAT SAT When the police appear, Ochs claims that “Mariandel” is SAT his fiancée. The arriving Faninal, furious at his future SAT son-in-law’s behavior, summons Sophie to set matters SAT straight, then faints and is carried off. SAT SAT At the height of the confusion, the Marschallin enters. SAT Octavian takes off his disguise and the Marschallin SAT explains to Ochs that it was all a farce. SAT SAT The baron finally admits defeat and leaves, pursued by the SAT innkeeper and various other people who all demand payment SAT of their bills. Left alone with Octavian and Sophie, the SAT Marschallin laments that she must lose her lover so soon, SAT but nevertheless accepts the truth (Trio: “Hab’ mir’s SAT gelobt”). SAT SAT She gives the bewildered Octavian to Sophie and quietly SAT leaves the room. The young lovers realize that their dream SAT has come true (Duet: “Ist ein Traum”). SUN SUN Fourteen centuries ago an elite band of three hundred SUN warriors set out from Edinburgh and marched south to SUN Catterick in Yorkshire to meet a force of 10,000 Saxons in SUN a bloody pitched battle. At the end of a week of ferocious SUN combat all but three of the 300 lay dead and, with them, SUN the last hope of the Old North - the original Britons - SUN against the Saxon invaders. But the battle left an SUN enduring literary legacy: one of the three survivors, SUN Aneirin, fled back to Edinburgh and composed the Gododdin, SUN an epic poem to commemorate his fallen comrades. SUN SUN Gwyneth follows the war band from the Edinburgh stronghold SUN where they spent a year feasting and drinking mead to the SUN landscape of northern England where they met their fate. SUN As she travels she discovers new insights into SUN contemporary Britain from a sixth-century poem written in SUN Welsh about a group of warriors from Scotland who fought a SUN battle in Yorkshire. SUN SUN 22:45 Words and Music b00pl1q2 (Listen) SUN Atonement SUN SUN A sequence of poetry, prose and music on the theme of SUN atonement, with readings by Simon Russell Beale and Adjoa SUN Andoh. SUN SUN Featuring works by John Milton, Emily Dickinson, Anton SUN Chekhov, CS Lewis, Antjie Krog and Kit Wright, accompanied SUN by the music of Samuel Barber, Max Bruch, Benjamin SUN Wallfisch, Dario Marianelli and Barry Adamson. SUN SUN Introduction SUN SUN Don’t leave it too late to put it right… in this week’s SUN Words and Music I’ve sought to explore the way conscience SUN compels us to find ways to make amends for our wrongs and SUN those of others, and to look at the suffering and SUN frustration that can come with those attempts to clean the SUN slate. But I’ve also tried to celebrate the redemption SUN that can be found in religion, acts of recompense, and the SUN human spirit. SUN SUN The programme begins with Duke Ellington’s ‘Please Forgive SUN Me’. Recorded in 1938, its gentle regret takes on a more SUN urgent poignancy as the insecurity of the Second World War SUN potentially leaves misdeeds unresolved. We hear the SUN despair of Bryony, the central character in Ian McEwan’s SUN novel, ‘Atonement’, as she throws herself into a daily SUN grind of work in an attempt to atone for the deception SUN that changed the lives of those around her. And as Dario SUN Marionelli’s score implores ‘Rescue Me’, there is an offer SUN of redemption through the atonement of Christ in Milton’s SUN ‘Paradise Lost’, later echoed in the resurrection of Aslan SUN in C.S. Lewis’s ‘The Lion, the Witch, and the Wardrobe’, SUN and in the journey of Coleridge’s Ancient Mariner. But in SUN a world where ills can seem so great it is, perhaps, only SUN through religion that a sense of atonement on a larger SUN scale can be imagined. The Chorale of Bach’s St Matthew SUN Passion, and Max Bruch’s Kol Nidrei (an adagio on Hebrew SUN melodies for the Jewish Day of Atonement) echo our deep SUN desire for things to be ‘made right’ rather than merely SUN understood. SUN SUN In secular music, Samuel Barber’s Adagio for Strings seems SUN to convey the yearning for atonement, and so I have used SUN it as a backdrop for Kit Wright’s poem ‘Hoping it Might Be SUN So’, in which the writer imagines a world where the most SUN horrible wrongs will be put right. And in the final part SUN of Goethe’s poem ‘Trilogy of Passion’, the beauty of music SUN is itself a route to atonement: “Music with angel-pinions SUN hovers there, To pierce man’s being to its inmost core”. SUN In his composition of Requiem, Benjamin Wallfisch offers SUN music to the memory of his great-grandparents, who died in SUN Auschwitz. It is played by his father and brother, with SUN his grandmother Anita Lasker-Wallfisch, who survived the SUN Holocaust through playing the cello in the camp orchestra SUN at Auschwitz and later, Bergen-Belsen. And it was as a SUN member of the French armed forces that Messiaen was SUN captured and imprisoned in a German POW camp, where he SUN wrote his Quartet for the End of Time, which took a SUN passage of the Book of Revelation – the culmination of SUN Christ’s atonement - as its starting point. SUN SUN Just as we can seek to atone for our crimes and SUN misdemeanours, so can the state demand it. Nick Cave’s SUN ‘The Mercy Seat’ is a graphic description of the journey SUN of a convicted murderer sentenced to death. But the SUN bleakness of that situation is countered by the collective SUN optimism of the South African National Anthem ‘Nkosi SUN Sikele IAfrika; sung for decades in a spirit of defiance SUN and hope, it prefaces Antjie Krog’s poem: ‘Country of SUN Grief and Grace’, which was used in the final document of SUN the Truth and Reconciliation Commission. SUN SUN Sadly, too often, there is little we can do to atone for SUN life’s wrongs – but it is there in the small things, as in SUN David Scott’s ‘The Flower Rota’ two mothers weekly arrange SUN flowers for their two dead soldier sons. And as we close SUN the programme with Dario Marianelli’s Denouement, Simon SUN Russell Beale reads Felix Dennis’s ‘I am Listening Now…’, SUN a reminder that we must take our time to make amends SUN whilst we still can. THU THU He believes that in many of today's contentious and THU emotional public debates - for example around disability, THU ante-natal screening or even the heated discussion of the THU right to die - there are often no clear answers. Neither THU science, nor social research, nor ethical reasoning can THU tell us what to do - much as we may wish for them to do so.
