Henze's OperasSAT
SAT
As the music of Hans Werner Henze takes over London’sSAT
Barbican Centre for a weekend, Tom explores the 83SAT
year-old German composer’s most recent opera, Phaedra,SAT
which was premiered in Berlin in 2007 and now receives itsSAT
first UK performance – its mythical story of rebirthSAT
mirroring Henze’s own experience having written the work’sSAT
two acts either side of a major illness.SAT
SAT
Tom talks to the conductor Michael Boder, tenor John MarkSAT
Ainsley and critic Shirley Apthorp about the range ofSAT
human experience which Henze encapsulates in his music,SAT
and why he is possibly the greatest living opera composer.SAT

SAT
At the start of Gustav Mahler’s anniversary year (2010SAT

SAT
And Tom finds out about a Mahler focus at Manchester’sSAT
Bridgewater Hall: a complete symphony cycle shared betweenSAT
the BBC Philharmonic, Hallé and Manchester CamerataSAT
including new works specially commissioned for eachSAT
concert in the series. Conductors Gianandrea Noseda andSAT
Mark Elder share their thoughts about the symphonies andSAT

World Routes in Madagascar, Episode 3SAT
SAT
Lucy Duran continues her journey through MadagascarSAT
recording the ancient music of this mysterious island.SAT
This week she hears songs that accompany the importantSAT
exhumation and reburial ceremonies and visits the villageSAT
of her guide, Justin Vali. Whilst there she hears theSAT
delicate sound of the ancestral zither, visits a SpiritSAT
House, finds out why you can't whistle after 6pm. 3/3.SAT
Producer James ParkinSAT
SAT
In September 2009, World Routes travelled to Madagascar,SAT
the giant Indian Ocean island off the coast of MozambiqueSAT
- East of the African continent. This mysterious island isSAT
full of extraordinary animal and plant life - home to moreSAT
unique species than just about anywhere on the planet.SAT
It's in the grip of political turmoil and its people areSAT
some of the poorest in the world. But for us, what makesSAT
this island of strange dreams, ancestral worship andSAT
sorcery so special is its music. And, like the naturalSAT
life, its unique evolution - neither African nor Asian -SAT
makes it a wonderful melting pot of instruments andSAT
styles. Throughout 2010, we'll be broadcasting theSAT
recordings we made for World Routes.SAT
Two weeks ago on the programme, Lucy was introduced to theSAT
music of Madagascar by Justin Vali and his MalagasySAT
Orkestra. This week she continues a journey of her own toSAT
discover some of that music in its true context. She'sSAT
joined by Justin and a great friend of his; someone heSAT
calls his brother. An instrument-maker, musician, producerSAT
and - it's fair to say - a Malagasy music fanatic: PaddySAT
Bush (who also happens to be Kate's brother).SAT
Lucy learns about the ceremony of reburial - the bones ofSAT
ancestors are removed from their tombs every 7 years andSAT
danced around, re-dressed and introduced to new members ofSAT
the family. This joyous occasion is accompanied bySAT
uplifting music for flute. Lucy and the World Routes teamSAT
then travel deep into the high interior. They visit a zebuSAT
(the holy cattle of Madagascar) market and record music inSAT
the remote and magical village that Justin was born in.SAT

Live from the Met, Bizet's CarmenSAT
SAT
Including the Toreador's Song and Habanera, Bizet's CarmenSAT
is packed full of some of the best known and instantlySAT
hummable tunes in the Classical canon. So it's easy toSAT
forget that the score was declared unplayable, and theSAT
story too scandalous and debauched for polite society atSAT
its 1875 premiere.SAT
SAT
What upset the prim Parisians was that the cast ofSAT
low-life characters, including factory workers, gypsiesSAT
and soldiers, is depicted without rose-tinted romanticism,SAT
the slaves of their torrid passions. Jealousy, crime andSAT
murder dominate in a Spanish setting that the FrenchSAT
preferred to think of as perfumed and exotic. ButSAT
posterity gave Bizet the last laugh and star singers haveSAT

Revolution in the AirSUN
SUN
As we embark on a new decade, Suzy Klein single-handedlySUN
mans the musical barricades, and gives some thought toSUN
revolutions - musical ones. Vienna is one flash-point, asSUN
composers from Mozart to Schoenberg discard the old andSUN
usher in the new. Paris, no stranger to political andSUN
cultural disquiet, features too; and Suzy asks whether itSUN
has been a blessing or a curse for composers and musiciansSUN
to live in 'interesting times'.SUN

The Forebears of PalestrinaSUN
SUN
Catherine Bott presents a programme of music by PalestrinaSUN
and some of the composers who may have influenced his nowSUN
familiar style. The performances come from a concert givenSUN
at St Paul's Church in Knightsbridge by The BBC Singers,SUN
conducted by Peter Phillips. What Peter Phillips wanted toSUN
achieve when he chose this repertoire was to show whereSUN
Palestrina came from. We know that he came fromSUN
Palestrina - a small hill-town not far from Rome - butSUN
this concert was designed to find out how he developed hisSUN
compositional style - who his major influences were, andSUN
which other composers he may have known. Composers such asSUN
Carpentras, Firmin Lebel, Josquin Desprez and CostanzoSUN
Festa all had a degree of influence on the great VaticanSUN
composer - and each has at least one work in theSUN
programme. The programme also features pieces bySUN
Palestrina himself, including the 6-part Pentecostal motetSUN
Dum complerentur and his 5-part setting of theSUN
Lamentations of Jeremiah.SUN

Faure RequiemSUN
SUN
Gabriel Fauré composed what is arguably his magnum opus -SUN
the Requiem in D minor - between 1870 and 1890, but hisSUN
reasons for composing the piece are uncertain. Faure lostSUN
both his parents within two years of each other, which maySUN
have been his original impetus, but by the time of hisSUN
mother's death he had already begun the work, which heSUN
later declared was composed for nothing . for fun, if ISUN
may be permitted to say so!SUN
The first version of the work, which he called un petitSUN
Requiem included just five movements, but not the LiberaSUN
Me. It was first performed at La Madeleine in Paris, withSUN
Fauré himself conducting - the occasion being the funeralSUN
of the architect, Joseph La Soufaché.SUN
Over the next two years Fauré expanded the piece to theSUN
now more familiar seven movements, and altered some of hisSUN
original orchestrations. In 1899-1900, the score wasSUN
reworked again for full orchestra, probably by one of hisSUN
students. It was the definiteive version of the Requiem -SUN
played at Fauré's own funeral in 1924 - until John RutterSUN
rediscovered Fauré's original manuscript of the chamberSUN
orchestra version in the Bibliothèque Nationale in ParisSUN
in the early 1980s. It has now become one of the mostSUN
popular pieces for choirs and choral societies all overSUN
the world.SUN
In today's programme, Stephen Johnson explores the nuancesSUN
and differences in the Requiem, using the recordings bySUN
John Eliot Gardiner's Monteverdi Choir and The Sixteen,SUN
conducted by Harry Christophers.SUN

Season of Migration to the North By Tayeb SalihSUN
Translated by Denys Johnson-DaviesSUN
Dramatised by Philip Palmer.SUN
SUN
The late Tayeb Salih's wry and sensual masterpiece hasSUN
been described as the most important Arab novel of theSUN
20th century. First published in Arabic in 1966, ten yearsSUN
after Sudan's independence, it's a hall of mirrors whichSUN
conjures poetry and suspense from the ambivalence of theSUN
colonial legacy. A young man returning from studying inSUN
Europe to his beloved village 'on the bend in the Nile'SUN
unravels a tale which will lead to murder.SUN

SUN
Notes:SUN
The most celebrated Arabic novel of the twentieth centurySUN
is a sensual and shocking thriller from Sudan. Its fluidSUN
structure and elusive tone have defied many attempts toSUN
dramatise it in different media, but make it uniquelySUN
suited for radio. This dramatisation, the only oneSUN
completed during Salih's lifetime, was made for BBC RadioSUN
3 last year.SUN
SUN
Not even the work of the recent Nobel Prize Winner,SUN
Egyptian Naguib Mahfouz, has achieved the literary statusSUN
of SEASON OF MIGRATION TO THE NORTH by Sudanese-bornTayebSUN
Salih. First published in Arabic in 1966, this shortSUN
novel's translation into English in 1969 triggered aSUN
series of translations into all major languages, fromSUN
Norwegian to Japanese, and a cult following. In 1989, itSUN
became the first Arabic novel to be published in theSUN
Penguin Classics series, and in 2001 was selected by aSUN
panel of Arab writers and critics as the most importantSUN
Arab novel of the twentieth century. Its intelligent andSUN
richly poetic engagement with the ambivalences of theSUN
colonial legacy have made it a book which now features onSUN
University syllabuses around the world, and about whichSUN
doctorates are written. Conversely it is still regularlySUN
banned and unbanned in states throughout the Arab world,SUN
and is currently banned in the place where it is soSUN
memorably set, the tiny rural villages of remote northernSUN
Sudan.SUN
SUN
A young man returns to his beloved home 'on the bend ofSUN
the Nile' after seven years studying in London, where heSUN
is proud to have completed a doctorate on the life of aSUN
minor English poet. He is comforted to find that theSUN
traditional life of the village he loves hasn't changed atSUN
all. Except for one man. A mysterious stranger has marriedSUN
into the village and settled down to farm. Then theSUN
stranger seeks him out. He has a tale to tell, and only aSUN
scholar can hear it. But the telling of the tale will leadSUN
them both into two brutally sexual murders, and turn theSUN
idyllic world of their village into hell.SUN
SUN
THE CASTSUN
Zubin Varla stars as Mustafa Sa'eed, and Beru Tessema asSUN
Suleyman. Cast includes Philip Arditti, Ellen Thomas,SUN
Nadim Sawalha, Farzana dua Elahe and Mitchell Zanghaza.SUN
SUN
THE WRITERSUN
Tayeb Salih was born in the Northern Province of the SudanSUN
in 1929, and studied at the University of Khartoum, beforeSUN
leaving for the University of London. Coming from aSUN
background of small farmers and religious teachers, hisSUN
original intention was to work in agriculture. Except,SUN
however, for a brief spell as a schoolmaster before comingSUN
to Britain, his working life was in broadcasting,SUN
including a spell as Head of Drama for the BBC's ArabicSUN
Service. He published four novels and a collection ofSUN
short stories. His novella The Wedding of Zein was madeSUN
into a drama in Libya, and a Cannes Festival prize-winningSUN
film by the Kuwaiti filmmaker Khalid Siddiq in the lateSUN
1970s.SUN
For more than 10 years, Salih wrote a weekly column forSUN
the London-based Arabic language newspaper, al Majalla,SUN
in which he explored various literary themes. He laterSUN
became director general of the Ministry of Information inSUN
Doha, Qatar. He spent the last 10 years of his workingSUN
career with UNESCO in Paris, where he held various postsSUN
and was finally UNESCO's representative in the GulfSUN
States. Tayeb Salih died in London on 18th February 2009.SUN

At Cupids Cove: The First English Settlement in CanadaSUN
SUN
2010 sees an important transatlantic anniversary - theSUN
400th anniversary of the first English settlement in theSUN
north of North America, at Cupers - or Cupids - Cove,SUN
Conception Bay, in Newfoundland. Sean Street visits theSUN
site and with William Gilbert, the chief archaeologist,SUN
reveals the life of the settlers, their relations with theSUN
indigenous people and the lands they left behind.SUN
SUN
We hear how a 'plantation' was established by the LondonSUN
and Bristol Company of Merchant Venturers in 1610 and theSUN
first governor was a Bristol merchant named John Guy. TheSUN
settlement they founded was the first post-Norse EuropeanSUN
settlement in Newfoundland, the first English settlementSUN
in what is now Canada and one of the first EuropeanSUN
settlements anywhere in North America - 10 years earlierSUN
than the arrival of the Mayflower in Massachusetts.SUN
SUN
William Gilbert takes Sean to the remains of the colonySUN
which were discovered in 1995 and have been excavatedSUN
every summer since. Four early 17th century buildings haveSUN
been revealed, including the dwelling house and storehouseSUN
erected by Guy's party in the autumn of 1610. They examineSUN
some of the 126,000 artefacts which have been uncovered,SUN
giving a remarkably full picture of the life, business andSUN
death in Cupids Cove. Some details are surprising: theSUN
settlement's fortified wall faces the sea - and SeanSUN
learns that the fear was of attack by European piratesSUN
rather than by native people.SUN
SUN
As interesting and significant as the artefacts are theSUN
documents: several letters and reports, dating from 1610,SUN
survive, as does John Guy's journal. Indeed, the site wasSUN
discovered because the correspondence provided clues toSUN
its whereabouts. Reading these Sean learns that sixty-twoSUN
people spent the winter of 1612-1613 at Cupids Bay, andSUN
that there were eight deaths. One man confessed to aSUN
murder in Rochester and Guy wrote that he 'died ofSUN
thought'. There was also one birth that winter - a boySUN
born to Nicholas Guy and his wife on 27 March, 1613 - heSUN
was the first English child born in what is now Canada.SUN
SUN
Sean hears how the artefacts, too, tell personal stories:SUN
There are two silver threads that, because of theSUN
sumptuary laws, almost certainly come from the jacket ofSUN
John Guy himself. Guy specifically mentions some amberSUN
beads that he brought with him - and one of these has beenSUN
found. These were very rare, so it is most probably his.SUN
There are references to the establishment of a fur tradeSUN
with the Beothuk people who lived 18 miles away, and aSUN
request in the winter of 1619/1620 from Thomas Rowley thatSUN
'hatchets, looking glasses, beads, a drum and shoemakers'SUN
thread' be sent to Cupers Cove as 'truck for savages'.SUN
Hundreds of glass trade beads have been found, and WilliamSUN
Gilbert takes Sean Street to the island where the firstSUN
contact was made.SUN
SUN
Sean Street visits Cupids Cove and tells the little-knownSUN
story of the earliest English settlement in Canada. HeSUN
finds that, four hundred years later, people are stillSUN
there - and talks to a woman whose potato patch has becomeSUN
an archaeological site of great importance.SUN

The Best Days of Our LivesSUN
SUN
Going to school is a right of passage we have all shared,SUN
but the likelihood is that no two people share the sameSUN
experience. Many authors have written on this subject, andSUN
this week’s Words and Music dips a toe into the ocean ofSUN
literature available. Paul Copley is a familiar face to TVSUN
and a well loved voice on radio. Originally a trainedSUN
teacher, he starred in the long running 1990s Radio 4SUN
comedy series about a school “King Street Junior”. He andSUN
the popular TV actress Sarah Lancashire, who recentlySUN
starred in the BBC drama “All the Small Things”, provideSUN
the readings.SUN
SUN
Laurie Lee’s description of his first day at school in hisSUN
seminal tale of growing up - “Cider with Rosie” - is oneSUN
of the most famous passages about this subject. The 4 yearSUN
old Lol misinterpreting the word “present” (meaning theSUN
current time) with the word meaning gift, will bring aSUN
smile of recognition to any parent.SUN
SUN
Roger McGough’s poem on the same subject refers to theSUN
playground games which, at first, he doesn’t understand,SUN
so it felt appropriate to bring in a well known playgroundSUN
song – “The Big Ship Sails on the Alley Alley O”.SUN
SUN
Like McGough, I grew up initially in Liverpool, where theSUN
school children are renowned for their inventiveness inSUN
the playground. In my memory, “The Big Ship” has to beSUN
sung with a strong Scouse accent, and accompanies an oldSUN
Victorian game known as “Thread the Needle” in which theSUN
children join hands in a long line and weave in and out ofSUN
each other to create a complex puzzle, usually ending inSUN
collapse and giggles.SUN
SUN
Apprehensive innocence is soon replaced by well rehearsedSUN
deception by the time “Little Anne McKay” complains ofSUN
every ailment possible which will prevent her from goingSUN
to school, and then the stage is set for the wonderfulSUN
Joyce Grenfell. Her monologue on teaching a class of smallSUN
children is a favourite, and we never do discover whatSUN
appalling thing George was doing!SUN
SUN
The happy tone of Grace Williams’s “Fantasia on WelshSUN
nursery tunes” is then juxtaposed with Tippett’s bleak,SUN
wartime portrayal of persecution - “A Child of Our Time”,SUN
introducing some darker views of the school experience.SUN
Charles Causley’s apparently humourous poem “TimothySUN
Winters” suddenly clouds over half way through when oneSUN
realises how this child is almost as neglected as theSUN
unfortunate inhabitants of Dotheboys Hall in NicholasSUN
Nickleby.SUN
SUN
Marching with Sibelius’s Finnish primary school children,SUN
we find ourselves at the front of the classroom. Carol AnnSUN
Duffy’s “Head of English” is rather self absorbed, but inSUN
D.H. Lawrence’s dreamy poem “The Best of School”, oneSUN
witnesses a teacher who is beginning to realise just howSUN
much pleasure is to be had by shaping the lives andSUN
interests of young people. This is a powerful position toSUN
be in, of course, and it is abused, subtly but terribly bySUN
Miss Jean Brodie in Muriel Spark’s darkly funny novel.SUN
SUN
There are echoes of Joyce Grenfell, this time as a gaucheSUN
police woman, in Malcolm Arnold’s comic film score to theSUN
“St Trinian’s” films, contrasted with the appealingSUN
simplicity of Frank Loesser’s “Inch Worm” in whichSUN
children recite their time tables and Danny Kaye remindsSUN
us what a superb voice he had when he played the part ofSUN
Hans Christian Andersen.SUN
SUN
Following on from Gilbert and Sullivan’s “Three LittleSUN
Maids from School”, Tom Lehrer’s hilarious list of theSUN
elements in the periodic table is based on a SullivanSUN
patter song from “The Pirates of Penzance.”SUN
SUN
Puberty hits with hilarious results in Sue Townsend’s “TheSUN
Diary of Adrian Mole aged 13¾”, and in Carol Ann Duffy’sSUN
breathless and very real portrayal of a much loved teacherSUN
– “In Mrs Tilscher’s Class”. When I first read that poem,SUN
there was only one song in my mind which could possiblySUN
follow the last few lines – Alice Cooper’s explosiveSUN
“School’s Out”, which totally captures the uniquelySUN
intense sensation felt at the end of the summer term asSUN
you run out of the school gates into six long weeks ofSUN
sunshine and freedom.SUN

Jan Dismas Zelenka (1679-1745), Episode 1MON
MON
Donald Macleod begins his week-long exploration of one ofMON
Baroque music's forgotten heroes. With a name likeMON
Zelenka, he may sound like a man created only to makeMON
possible the complete A-Z list of classical composers, butMON
this musician's talents added up to so much more. One ofMON
Zelenka's great contemporaries, Telemann, was so impressedMON
by his abilities that he was complicit in a plot to stealMON
copies of his work. And none other than J.S.Bach spentMON
much of his time in Leipzig trying to curry favour withMON
Zelenka's employers in the hope of securing anMON
appointment. Yet, until the 1960s, Zelenka was little moreMON
than a name, even to the most knowledgeable scholars.MON
MON
Born in Bohemia, Zelenka's career at the nearby court ofMON
Dresden should have been a non-starter. He was brought upMON
a Catholic, trained by Jesuits, at precisely the timeMON
Saxony was turning Lutheran. With a passion for churchMON
music, his musical career seemed to face a dead end. ThenMON
an extraordinary political moment changed his fortunes:MON
the decision by the Dresden royal court to create its ownMON
Catholic enclave. The Elector Augustus the Strong,MON
so-called because he could break horse-shoes with his bareMON
hands, now needed composers to write for the royalMON
liturgy, and Zelenka was the perfect man for the job.MON
MON
As the series unfolds, Donald Macleod traces Zelenka'sMON
career at this opulent court, famed for its artMON
collections, lavish festivals, and extravagant religiousMON
ceremonies. It sees Zelenka quickly forge a reputation forMON
the most solemn religious celebrations, but also fightingMON
for recognition at court as a succession of otherMON
musicians is promoted above his head. It's ultimately aMON
tale tinged with sadness, as Zelenka resigns himself toMON
seeing out his tenure as a relatively low-ranking courtMON
musician. But thanks to recent research explored for theMON
first time in the programmes we also get some insight intoMON
the high esteem he was held in by his fellow musicians,MON
and only now being recognised by music lovers some two andMON
a half centuries later.MON
MON
In this first episode Donald Macleod uncovers the sketchyMON
details of Zelenka's early life as his career begins toMON
take off at the Dresden court, famed both for itsMON
staggering cultural riches and deep religious schisms.MON

Oliver Knussen conducts the BBC Symphony Orchestra inMON
music by Hans Werner Henze, from the Total Immersion eventMON
held last weekend at the Barbican Hall, London.MON
Art banned by the Nazis somehow reached young Hans WernerMON
Henze as he grew up in a small German village during theMON
1930s. It fuelled his desire to become a musician andMON
shaped his worldview. Everything that the fascistsMON
persecute and hate is beautiful to me, he later recalled.MON
An astonishingly prolific and influential composer,MON
Henze's work includes over 30 operas and ballet scores andMON
10 symphonies.MON
Extremes of emotion meet in his Fourth Symphony, writtenMON
for large orchestra in 1955. The 'air for orchestra',MON
Fraternité, was described following its world premiere inMON
1999 as 'a restless search for lasting harmony'. ElogiumMON
Musicum, first heard in Leipzig in 2008, is theMON
octogenarian composer's serene, profoundly moving andMON
consoling 'obituary' for his companion of over 40 years.MON

Enlightenment Voices, Diderot, Part 1MON
MON
Denis Diderot - the inspirational driving force behind theMON
greatest publishing enterprise of the Enlightenment, theMON
colossal Encyclopdie - introduced by historian JustinMON
Champion.MON
MON
It is hard to over-estimate the scope and ambition of theMON
Encyclopedie. Published in two decades after 1751, it wasMON
the single greatest publishing enterprise of the EuropeanMON
Enlightenment. Extending to 28 folio volumes, each aMON
thousand pages in length, and with the intention ofMON
recording all existing knowledge, both practical andMON
intellectual, the Encyclopedie contained some 72,000MON
articles by 230 contributors and sold an astonishingMON
250,000 copies across Europe. For the first of fiveMON
programmes, the historian Justin Champion introduces theMON
undertaking, from the commissioning of contributors to theMON
practicalities of printing, binding and distribution, andMON
on to its reception both by ordinary readers and by theMON
political and religious authorities. In Justin'sMON
introduction Denis Diderot, the son of a provincialMON
cutler, is brought back to life as the extraordinaryMON
driving passion behind this breathtaking landmark both ofMON
publishing history and the Enlightenment project.MON

Mozart wrote the Haffner Symphony rather unwillingly forTUE
a merchant in his home town of Salzburg, where it wasTUE
first performed. Looking at it again before performing itTUE
in Vienna, he was surprised by the quality of the music heTUE
had written in great haste. My new Haffner Symphony hasTUE
positively amazed me, for I had forgotten every note ofTUE
it, he wrote to his father. It must surely make aTUE
splendid effect.TUE
A splendid effect is precisely what Strauss aimed for inTUE
his first Horn Concerto, while his music for Le BourgeoisTUE
Gentilhomme began life as incidental music to Molière'sTUE
play of the same name . It is a sparkling score payingTUE
homage to Jean-Baptiste Lully, who wrote the originalTUE
music for the Molière play.TUE

Fauré said of his Requiem, one of the best-loved works inWED
the choral repertoire, .it is thus that I see death: as aWED
happy deliverance, an aspiration towards happiness above,WED
rather than as a painful experience. Its beautifulWED
tranquillity has allowed many listeners to share in theWED
musical and spiritual comfort of that vision.WED
Roussel's Third Symphony was premiered by the Boston SOWED
and Koussevitsky in 1930. It is a work of contrasts: theWED
thunderous first movement contrasts with the pastoralWED
melancholy meditation of the Adagio and the fairgroundWED
sounds of the Vivace, while the tremendous exultation ofWED
the last movement prepares the way for the energy ofWED

Science under Barack ObamaWED
WED
Philip Dodd presents an edition of Night Waves dedicatedWED
to assessing science in America under Barack Obama.WED
WED
One year ago today Barack Obama's inaugural addressWED
pledged that We will restore science to its rightfulWED
place...our time of standing pat, of protecting narrowWED
interests and putting off unpleasant decisions - that timeWED
has surely passed'.WED
WED
These words brought delight to many in the science worldWED
and provoked anger amongst others. Under President BushWED
science in America had become a hotly contested subjectWED
with accusations of inappropriate political interference,WED
scepticism of climate change science was widespread andWED
federal funding for stem cell research restricted onWED
religious grounds.WED
WED
Obama had made many science-related promises on theWED
campaign trail, so a year on how comfortably does scienceWED
sit in the American landscape? Had the US lost touch withWED
the rest of the scientific world as some claimed, and hasWED
that ground been made up by the new administration? In aWED
year that has been dominated by the road to Copenhagen'sWED
Green summit, has anything changed? How much politicalWED
independence exists today?WED
WED
Philip Dodd is joined by a roundtable of guest who haveWED
been keeping a close eye on developments in this editionWED
of Night Waves dedicated to Science under Obama.WED

Enlightenment Voices, Diderot, Part 3WED
WED
Kate Tunstall introduces Diderot's Letter on the Blind,WED
which asked, in the 18th century, philosophical questionsWED
about human life with which we still grapple today.WED
WED
How do we know what we know, or what we think we know? WhyWED
do people have different ideas about the world, and howWED
can we judge them? What are the origins of the universe?WED
Is there any proof of the existence of God? These areWED
questions which still preoccupy us today, but Dr KateWED
Tunstall, who teaches French at the University of Oxford,WED
is fascinated by how the great French thinker andWED
activist, Denis Diderot, asked them in the age of theWED
Enlightenment. In this evening's Essay, she introduces hisWED
early work, Letter on the Blind, which starts with theWED
eighteenth century fascination with cataract operationsWED
and goes on to explore what answers blind people can giveWED

St Giles' Church, in London's Barbican, is one of only aTHU
few such places in this country which can boast twoTHU
complete and well-equipped organs in the same building -THU
unlike some Continental countries, especially France,THU
where it's much more common. In this live Performance onTHU

sacred repertoire which makes use of these musicalTHU
resources - including two splendidly exuberant settings ofTHU
the mass by French composers, Arvo Part's setting of aTHU
plainsong hymn, and the first performance of a new pieceTHU
by BBC Singers' new Associate Composer, Gabriel Jackson.THU

Tales from the LoftTHU
THU
It's not enough simply to be a great musician- to be aTHU
successful organist you have to have the physical staminaTHU
to climb narrow stairwells and cope with heights and youTHU
have to have an understanding of the technical complexityTHU
of the instrument you're about to play. The organ, whetherTHU
in a concert hall or cathedral, is a sophisticated andTHU
intricately designed piece of musical equipment, withTHU
stops, keyboards, pedals and often miles of pipework. ItTHU
all adds up to creating an instrument with as much of aTHU
personality as the people who play it.THU
THU
Tales from the Loft combines the thoughts of players andTHU
those who build instruments to evoke a picture of the manyTHU
facets of the organ. Among those taking part are theTHU
international artist Dame Gillian Weir and the organTHU
builder Kenneth Tickell, who we hear putting the finishingTHU
touches to a new organ at Lincoln's Inn Chapel in London.THU

The EnlightenmentTHU
THU
Rana Mitter and guests debate the question: Is theTHU
Enlightenment still relevant today?THU
THU
In recent years, a short period in eighteenth centuryTHU
European history has been noisily dragged out of theTHU
library and become contemporary and controversial. To itsTHU
supporters the Enlightenment is the cornerstone of theTHU
modern world - a time when European thinkers likeTHU
Voltaire, Rousseau, Hume and Adam Smith defined the coreTHU
principles of modern Western life: the triumph of reason,THU
the rise of human rights, the creation of the free market,THU
and the roots of modern democracy. But to its critics, theTHU
Enlightenment has now become a twisted dogma - intolerantTHU
of the religious, anti-Islamic and hostile to thoseTHU
(non-Europeans) who don't share its values.THU
THU
Night Waves marks the end of six weeks of R3 Essays aboutTHU
the original Enlightenment thinkers with a debate that isTHU
essential to understanding today's arguments about Europe,THU
its Muslim population and the place of faith in our globalTHU
society.THU
THU
Rana Mitter is joined by a round table of historians,THU
theologians and politicians to ask if we need moreTHU
Enlightenment - or if it needs to be returned to theTHU
European library stacks once again.THU

THU
Dr Caroline Warman explores Denis Diderot's passionateTHU
interest in women, both personally and as the victims ofTHU
intolerance and injustice.THU
THU
The love letters of Denis Diderot to his mistress SophieTHU
Volland are amongst the most passionate and touching ofTHU
all Enlightenment writing. According to Dr CarolineTHU
Warman, an expert in the French Enlightenment at JesusTHU
College, Oxford, they sizzle the pages they are writtenTHU
on. In this evening's Essay, Caroline Warman exploresTHU
Diderot's passionate interest in women, both from aTHU
personal point of view and as victims of injustice andTHU
intolerance. She introduces his erotic novella, IndiscreetTHU
Jewels, and his semi-pornographic novel, The Nun, whileTHU
unpacking Diderot's serious and stimulating exploration ofTHU
the abuse of power and the human appetite for pleasure.THU

Delius, Berlioz, Tchaikovsky, Part 1FRI
FRI
The world of Shakespeare hovers behind this concert liveFRI
from the Ulster hall, Belfast. Walk to Paradise Garden isFRI
an orchestral interlude from the opera A Village Romeo undFRI
Juliet by Delius, the story of which is based onFRI
Shakespeare's famous story. Hector Berlioz had a passionFRI
for the works of Shakespeare, and the title Les nuitsFRI
d'été is a nod in the direction of A Midsummer Night'sFRI
Dream, though the work is setting of poems of romanticFRI
longing - La Comédie de la mort - by the high romanticFRI
poet Théophile Gautier. Tchaikovsky's Symphony No. 1 isFRI
titled Winter Dreams, and although totally original, theFRI
elfin mood of the scherzo might have stepped out ofFRI
Mendelssohn's Midsummer Night's Dream.FRI

Diderot experts Caroline Warman and Kate Tunstall joinFRI

D'Alembert's Dream.FRI
FRI
Denis Diderot's publications range from his monumentalFRI
Encyclopedie to his erotic novella, Indiscreet Jewels, butFRI
perhaps his most extraordinary work is D'Alembert's Dream.FRI
It starts with Diderot's fellow encyclopedist, D'Alembert,FRI
challenging him to explain human life without making anyFRI
reference to God or the soul or anything that isn't purelyFRI
physical. Caroline Warman and Kate Tunstall, both DiderotFRI
experts at the University of Oxford, take on the Dream inFRI
a dialogue of their own and playfully challenge theFRI
listener to grapple with this quintessentiallyFRI
Enlightenment subject themselves.FRI
