SAT SAT 15:00 World Routes b00ps0sh (Listen) SAT World Routes in Madagascar, Episode 3 SAT SAT Lucy Duran continues her journey through Madagascar SAT recording the ancient music of this mysterious island. SAT This week she hears songs that accompany the important SAT exhumation and reburial ceremonies and visits the village SAT of her guide, Justin Vali. Whilst there she hears the SAT delicate sound of the ancestral zither, visits a Spirit SAT House, finds out why you can't whistle after 6pm. 3/3. SAT Producer James Parkin SAT SAT In September 2009, World Routes travelled to Madagascar, SAT the giant Indian Ocean island off the coast of Mozambique SAT - East of the African continent. This mysterious island is SAT full of extraordinary animal and plant life - home to more SAT unique species than just about anywhere on the planet. SAT It's in the grip of political turmoil and its people are SAT some of the poorest in the world. But for us, what makes SAT this island of strange dreams, ancestral worship and SAT sorcery so special is its music. And, like the natural SAT life, its unique evolution - neither African nor Asian - SAT makes it a wonderful melting pot of instruments and SAT styles. Throughout 2010, we'll be broadcasting the SAT recordings we made for World Routes. SAT Two weeks ago on the programme, Lucy was introduced to the SAT music of Madagascar by Justin Vali and his Malagasy SAT Orkestra. This week she continues a journey of her own to SAT discover some of that music in its true context. She's SAT joined by Justin and a great friend of his; someone he SAT calls his brother. An instrument-maker, musician, producer SAT and - it's fair to say - a Malagasy music fanatic: Paddy SAT Bush (who also happens to be Kate's brother). SAT Lucy learns about the ceremony of reburial - the bones of SAT ancestors are removed from their tombs every 7 years and SAT danced around, re-dressed and introduced to new members of SAT the family. This joyous occasion is accompanied by SAT uplifting music for flute. Lucy and the World Routes team SAT then travel deep into the high interior. They visit a zebu SAT (the holy cattle of Madagascar) market and record music in SAT the remote and magical village that Justin was born in. Faure lost SUN both his parents within two years of each other, which may SUN have been his original impetus, but by the time of his SUN mother's death he had already begun the work, which he SUN later declared was composed for nothing . for fun, if I SUN may be permitted to say so! SUN The first version of the work, which he called un petit SUN Requiem included just five movements, but not the Libera SUN Me. It was first performed at La Madeleine in Paris, with SUN Fauré himself conducting - the occasion being the funeral SUN of the architect, Joseph La Soufaché. SUN Over the next two years Fauré expanded the piece to the SUN now more familiar seven movements, and altered some of his SUN original orchestrations. In 1899-1900, the score was SUN reworked again for full orchestra, probably by one of his SUN students. It was the definiteive version of the Requiem - SUN played at Fauré's own funeral in 1924 - until John Rutter SUN rediscovered Fauré's original manuscript of the chamber SUN orchestra version in the Bibliothèque Nationale in Paris SUN in the early 1980s. It has now become one of the most SUN popular pieces for choirs and choral societies all over SUN the world. SUN SUN Notes: SUN The most celebrated Arabic novel of the twentieth century SUN is a sensual and shocking thriller from Sudan. Its fluid SUN structure and elusive tone have defied many attempts to SUN dramatise it in different media, but make it uniquely SUN suited for radio. This dramatisation, the only one SUN completed during Salih's lifetime, was made for BBC Radio SUN 3 last year. SUN SUN Not even the work of the recent Nobel Prize Winner, SUN Egyptian Naguib Mahfouz, has achieved the literary status SUN of SEASON OF MIGRATION TO THE NORTH by Sudanese-bornTayeb SUN Salih. First published in Arabic in 1966, this short SUN novel's translation into English in 1969 triggered a SUN series of translations into all major languages, from SUN Norwegian to Japanese, and a cult following. In 1989, it SUN became the first Arabic novel to be published in the SUN Penguin Classics series, and in 2001 was selected by a SUN panel of Arab writers and critics as the most important SUN Arab novel of the twentieth century. Its intelligent and SUN richly poetic engagement with the ambivalences of the SUN colonial legacy have made it a book which now features on SUN University syllabuses around the world, and about which SUN doctorates are written. Conversely it is still regularly SUN banned and unbanned in states throughout the Arab world, SUN and is currently banned in the place where it is so SUN memorably set, the tiny rural villages of remote northern SUN Sudan. SUN SUN A young man returns to his beloved home 'on the bend of SUN the Nile' after seven years studying in London, where he SUN is proud to have completed a doctorate on the life of a SUN minor English poet. He is comforted to find that the SUN traditional life of the village he loves hasn't changed at SUN all. Except for one man. A mysterious stranger has married SUN into the village and settled down to farm. Then the SUN stranger seeks him out. He has a tale to tell, and only a SUN scholar can hear it. But the telling of the tale will lead SUN them both into two brutally sexual murders, and turn the SUN idyllic world of their village into hell. SUN SUN THE CAST SUN Zubin Varla stars as Mustafa Sa'eed, and Beru Tessema as SUN Suleyman. Cast includes Philip Arditti, Ellen Thomas, SUN Nadim Sawalha, Farzana dua Elahe and Mitchell Zanghaza. SUN SUN THE WRITER SUN Tayeb Salih was born in the Northern Province of the Sudan SUN in 1929, and studied at the University of Khartoum, before SUN leaving for the University of London. Coming from a SUN background of small farmers and religious teachers, his SUN original intention was to work in agriculture. Except, SUN however, for a brief spell as a schoolmaster before coming SUN to Britain, his working life was in broadcasting, SUN including a spell as Head of Drama for the BBC's Arabic SUN Service. He published four novels and a collection of SUN short stories. His novella The Wedding of Zein was made SUN into a drama in Libya, and a Cannes Festival prize-winning SUN film by the Kuwaiti filmmaker Khalid Siddiq in the late SUN 1970s. SUN For more than 10 years, Salih wrote a weekly column for SUN the London-based Arabic language newspaper, al Majalla, SUN in which he explored various literary themes. He later SUN became director general of the Ministry of Information in SUN Doha, Qatar. He spent the last 10 years of his working SUN career with UNESCO in Paris, where he held various posts SUN and was finally UNESCO's representative in the Gulf SUN States. SUN SUN 21:30 Sunday Feature b00ps11l (Listen) SUN At Cupids Cove: The First English Settlement in Canada SUN SUN 2010 sees an important transatlantic anniversary - the SUN 400th anniversary of the first English settlement in the SUN north of North America, at Cupers - or Cupids - Cove, SUN Conception Bay, in Newfoundland. Sean Street visits the SUN site and with William Gilbert, the chief archaeologist, SUN reveals the life of the settlers, their relations with the SUN indigenous people and the lands they left behind. SUN SUN We hear how a 'plantation' was established by the London SUN and Bristol Company of Merchant Venturers in 1610 and the SUN first governor was a Bristol merchant named John Guy. The SUN settlement they founded was the first post-Norse European SUN settlement in Newfoundland, the first English settlement SUN in what is now Canada and one of the first European SUN settlements anywhere in North America - 10 years earlier SUN than the arrival of the Mayflower in Massachusetts. SUN SUN William Gilbert takes Sean to the remains of the colony SUN which were discovered in 1995 and have been excavated SUN every summer since. Four early 17th century buildings have SUN been revealed, including the dwelling house and storehouse SUN erected by Guy's party in the autumn of 1610. They examine SUN some of the 126,000 artefacts which have been uncovered, SUN giving a remarkably full picture of the life, business and SUN death in Cupids Cove. Some details are surprising: the SUN settlement's fortified wall faces the sea - and Sean SUN learns that the fear was of attack by European pirates SUN rather than by native people. SUN SUN As interesting and significant as the artefacts are the SUN documents: several letters and reports, dating from 1610, SUN survive, as does John Guy's journal. Indeed, the site was SUN discovered because the correspondence provided clues to SUN its whereabouts. Reading these Sean learns that sixty-two SUN people spent the winter of 1612-1613 at Cupids Bay, and SUN that there were eight deaths. One man confessed to a SUN murder in Rochester and Guy wrote that he 'died of SUN thought'. There was also one birth that winter - a boy SUN born to Nicholas Guy and his wife on 27 March, 1613 - he SUN was the first English child born in what is now Canada. SUN SUN Sean hears how the artefacts, too, tell personal stories: SUN There are two silver threads that, because of the SUN sumptuary laws, almost certainly come from the jacket of SUN John Guy himself. Guy specifically mentions some amber SUN beads that he brought with him - and one of these has been SUN found. These were very rare, so it is most probably his. SUN There are references to the establishment of a fur trade SUN with the Beothuk people who lived 18 miles away, and a SUN request in the winter of 1619/1620 from Thomas Rowley that SUN 'hatchets, looking glasses, beads, a drum and shoemakers' SUN thread' be sent to Cupers Cove as 'truck for savages'. SUN Hundreds of glass trade beads have been found, and William SUN Gilbert takes Sean Street to the island where the first SUN contact was made. SUN SUN Sean Street visits Cupids Cove and tells the little-known SUN story of the earliest English settlement in Canada. He SUN finds that, four hundred years later, people are still SUN there - and talks to a woman whose potato patch has become SUN an archaeological site of great importance. SUN SUN 22:15 Words and Music b00l0vkj (Listen) SUN The Best Days of Our Lives SUN SUN Going to school is a right of passage we have all shared, SUN but the likelihood is that no two people share the same SUN experience. Many authors have written on this subject, and SUN this week’s Words and Music dips a toe into the ocean of SUN literature available. Paul Copley is a familiar face to TV SUN and a well loved voice on radio. Originally a trained SUN teacher, he starred in the long running 1990s Radio 4 SUN comedy series about a school “King Street Junior”. He and SUN the popular TV actress Sarah Lancashire, who recently SUN starred in the BBC drama “All the Small Things”, provide SUN the readings. SUN SUN Laurie Lee’s description of his first day at school in his SUN seminal tale of growing up - “Cider with Rosie” - is one SUN of the most famous passages about this subject. The 4 year SUN old Lol misinterpreting the word “present” (meaning the SUN current time) with the word meaning gift, will bring a SUN smile of recognition to any parent. SUN SUN Roger McGough’s poem on the same subject refers to the SUN playground games which, at first, he doesn’t understand, SUN so it felt appropriate to bring in a well known playground SUN song – “The Big Ship Sails on the Alley Alley O”. SUN SUN Like McGough, I grew up initially in Liverpool, where the SUN school children are renowned for their inventiveness in SUN the playground. In my memory, “The Big Ship” has to be SUN sung with a strong Scouse accent, and accompanies an old SUN Victorian game known as “Thread the Needle” in which the SUN children join hands in a long line and weave in and out of SUN each other to create a complex puzzle, usually ending in SUN collapse and giggles. SUN SUN Apprehensive innocence is soon replaced by well rehearsed SUN deception by the time “Little Anne McKay” complains of SUN every ailment possible which will prevent her from going SUN to school, and then the stage is set for the wonderful SUN Joyce Grenfell. Her monologue on teaching a class of small SUN children is a favourite, and we never do discover what SUN appalling thing George was doing! SUN SUN The happy tone of Grace Williams’s “Fantasia on Welsh SUN nursery tunes” is then juxtaposed with Tippett’s bleak, SUN wartime portrayal of persecution - “A Child of Our Time”, SUN introducing some darker views of the school experience. SUN Charles Causley’s apparently humourous poem “Timothy SUN Winters” suddenly clouds over half way through when one SUN realises how this child is almost as neglected as the SUN unfortunate inhabitants of Dotheboys Hall in Nicholas SUN Nickleby. SUN SUN Marching with Sibelius’s Finnish primary school children, SUN we find ourselves at the front of the classroom. Carol Ann SUN Duffy’s “Head of English” is rather self absorbed, but in SUN D.H. Lawrence’s dreamy poem “The Best of School”, one SUN witnesses a teacher who is beginning to realise just how SUN much pleasure is to be had by shaping the lives and SUN interests of young people. This is a powerful position to SUN be in, of course, and it is abused, subtly but terribly by SUN Miss Jean Brodie in Muriel Spark’s darkly funny novel. SUN SUN There are echoes of Joyce Grenfell, this time as a gauche SUN police woman, in Malcolm Arnold’s comic film score to the SUN “St Trinian’s” films, contrasted with the appealing SUN simplicity of Frank Loesser’s “Inch Worm” in which SUN children recite their time tables and Danny Kaye reminds SUN us what a superb voice he had when he played the part of SUN Hans Christian Andersen. SUN SUN Following on from Gilbert and Sullivan’s “Three Little SUN Maids from School”, Tom Lehrer’s hilarious list of the SUN elements in the periodic table is based on a Sullivan SUN patter song from “The Pirates of Penzance.” SUN SUN Puberty hits with hilarious results in Sue Townsend’s “The SUN Diary of Adrian Mole aged 13¾”, and in Carol Ann Duffy’s SUN breathless and very real portrayal of a much loved teacher SUN – “In Mrs Tilscher’s Class”. MON MON 12:00 Composer of the Week b00ps141 (Listen) MON Jan Dismas Zelenka (1679-1745), Episode 1 MON MON Donald Macleod begins his week-long exploration of one of MON Baroque music's forgotten heroes. With a name like MON Zelenka, he may sound like a man created only to make MON possible the complete A-Z list of classical composers, but MON this musician's talents added up to so much more. One of MON Zelenka's great contemporaries, Telemann, was so impressed MON by his abilities that he was complicit in a plot to steal MON copies of his work. And none other than J.S.Bach spent MON much of his time in Leipzig trying to curry favour with MON Zelenka's employers in the hope of securing an MON appointment. Yet, until the 1960s, Zelenka was little more MON than a name, even to the most knowledgeable scholars. MON MON Born in Bohemia, Zelenka's career at the nearby court of MON Dresden should have been a non-starter. He was brought up MON a Catholic, trained by Jesuits, at precisely the time MON Saxony was turning Lutheran. With a passion for church MON music, his musical career seemed to face a dead end. Then MON an extraordinary political moment changed his fortunes: MON the decision by the Dresden royal court to create its own MON Catholic enclave. The Elector Augustus the Strong, MON so-called because he could break horse-shoes with his bare MON hands, now needed composers to write for the royal MON liturgy, and Zelenka was the perfect man for the job. MON MON As the series unfolds, Donald Macleod traces Zelenka's MON career at this opulent court, famed for its art MON collections, lavish festivals, and extravagant religious MON ceremonies. It sees Zelenka quickly forge a reputation for MON the most solemn religious celebrations, but also fighting MON for recognition at court as a succession of other MON musicians is promoted above his head. It's ultimately a MON tale tinged with sadness, as Zelenka resigns himself to MON seeing out his tenure as a relatively low-ranking court MON musician. But thanks to recent research explored for the MON first time in the programmes we also get some insight into MON the high esteem he was held in by his fellow musicians, MON and only now being recognised by music lovers some two and MON a half centuries later. MON MON In this first episode Donald Macleod uncovers the sketchy MON details of Zelenka's early life as his career begins to MON take off at the Dresden court, famed both for its MON staggering cultural riches and deep religious schisms. In this live Performance on THU 3, the BBC Singers and David Hill explore some of the THU sacred repertoire which makes use of these musical THU resources - including two splendidly exuberant settings of THU the mass by French composers, Arvo Part's setting of a THU plainsong hymn, and the first performance of a new piece THU by BBC Singers' new Associate Composer, Gabriel Jackson. THU In addition, solo works for two organs by two 20th-century THU masters of the instrument, and motets for double choir. THU THU 19:50 Twenty Minutes b00ps449 (Listen) THU Tales from the Loft THU THU It's not enough simply to be a great musician- to be a THU successful organist you have to have the physical stamina THU to climb narrow stairwells and cope with heights and you THU have to have an understanding of the technical complexity THU of the instrument you're about to play. The organ, whether THU in a concert hall or cathedral, is a sophisticated and THU intricately designed piece of musical equipment, with THU stops, keyboards, pedals and often miles of pipework. It THU all adds up to creating an instrument with as much of a THU personality as the people who play it. THU THU Tales from the Loft combines the thoughts of players and THU those who build instruments to evoke a picture of the many THU facets of the organ. Among those taking part are the THU international artist Dame Gillian Weir and the organ THU builder Kenneth Tickell, who we hear putting the finishing THU touches to a new organ at Lincoln's Inn Chapel in London. THU THU 21:15 Night Waves b00ps3v6 (Listen) THU The Enlightenment THU THU Rana Mitter and guests debate the question: Is the THU Enlightenment still relevant today? THU THU In recent years, a short period in eighteenth century THU European history has been noisily dragged out of the THU library and become contemporary and controversial. To its THU supporters the Enlightenment is the cornerstone of the THU modern world - a time when European thinkers like THU Voltaire, Rousseau, Hume and Adam Smith defined the core THU principles of modern Western life: the triumph of reason, THU the rise of human rights, the creation of the free market, THU and the roots of modern democracy. But to its critics, the THU Enlightenment has now become a twisted dogma - intolerant THU of the religious, anti-Islamic and hostile to those THU (non-Europeans) who don't share its values. THU THU Night Waves marks the end of six weeks of R3 Essays about THU the original Enlightenment thinkers with a debate that is THU essential to understanding today's arguments about Europe, THU its Muslim population and the place of faith in our global THU society. THU THU Rana Mitter is joined by a round table of historians, THU theologians and politicians to ask if we need more THU Enlightenment - or if it needs to be returned to the THU European library stacks once again. THU THU 22:00 Composer of the Week b00ps3ny (Listen) THU [Repeat of broadcast at 12:00 today.] THU THU 23:00 The Essay b00ps3v8 (Listen) THU Enlightenment Voices, Diderot, Part 4 THU THU Dr Caroline Warman explores Denis Diderot's passionate THU interest in women, both personally and as the victims of THU intolerance and injustice. THU THU The love letters of Denis Diderot to his mistress Sophie THU Volland are amongst the most passionate and touching of THU all Enlightenment writing. According to Dr Caroline THU Warman, an expert in the French Enlightenment at Jesus THU College, Oxford, they sizzle the pages they are written THU on. In this evening's Essay, Caroline Warman explores THU Diderot's passionate interest in women, both from a THU personal point of view and as victims of injustice and THU intolerance. She introduces his erotic novella, Indiscreet THU Jewels, and his semi-pornographic novel, The Nun, while THU unpacking Diderot's serious and stimulating exploration of THU the abuse of power and the human appetite for pleasure. FRI FRI Denis Diderot's publications range from his monumental FRI Encyclopedie to his erotic novella, Indiscreet Jewels, but FRI perhaps his most extraordinary work is D'Alembert's Dream. FRI It starts with Diderot's fellow encyclopedist, D'Alembert, FRI challenging him to explain human life without making any FRI reference to God or the soul or anything that isn't purely FRI physical. Caroline Warman and Kate Tunstall, both Diderot FRI experts at the University of Oxford, take on the Dream in FRI a dialogue of their own and playfully challenge the FRI listener to grapple with this quintessentially FRI Enlightenment subject themselves.
