SUN SUN Ravel's two concertos for piano were written almost SUN simultaneously in the late 1920s and were among the last SUN orchestral works that Ravel composed. They are remarkable in SUN many ways not least for the contrast that one provides with SUN the other. The Concerto for the Left-Hand was commissioned SUN for the pianist Paul Wittgenstein brother of the famous SUN philosopher who had lost his right arm in the First World SUN War. Ravel created a virtuosic single movement work which SUN emerges from the sombre depths of the orchestral to grow SUN into a powerful statement of triumph over adversity. Stephen SUN Johnson unpicks the piece examining some of Ravel's SUN imaginative writing for the left-hand. SUN SUN The G major Piano Concerto was written for the French SUN pianist Marguerite Long and is characterised with some of SUN the fashionable sounds of the day. The three movement SUN concerto is heavily influenced by the sounds of jazz and as SUN Stephen Johnson argues the sound of the Parisian music hall. SUN Stephen also examines the influence of Mozart on the SUN concerto especially in the beautiful and emotionally charged SUN slow movement. SUN SUN The programme includes complete performances of both works SUN and there will be an opportunity to see a visualisation of SUN the programme on the Discovering Music website. SUN SUN 22:15 Words and Music b00rs4zx (Listen) SUN The Doors of Perception SUN SUN The unifying idea behind this edition of Words and Music is SUN that reality is variable and personal. The texts read by Jim SUN Broadbent and Miranda Richardson cover the best part of 2000 SUN years from the Bible's Book of Revelation to last year's SUN "Late" by Christopher Reid. SUN SUN It's striking that despite the various ways of coming to SUN that reality (religion a refined sensibility illness SUN mind-altering drugs) these visions share many similarities. SUN The weird animal hell-on-earth of Revelation is echoed in SUN Thomas De Quincey's opium nightmares; Baudelaire's bedroom SUN (while he's on a high at least) is as perfect and SUN intoxicating as the heavenly paradise described by the SUN fourth-Century St Ephrem. Coleridge's trippy "Kubla Khan" SUN features another Oriental paradise with hints of something SUN disturbing but distant; Alice's mushroom has very peculiar SUN effects. The experience of Julian of Norwich alternating SUN between ecstasy and pain and the fevered ravings of Sylvia SUN Plath are strangely similar; Blake sees the infinite in the SUN small and apparently insignificant and after a long marriage SUN Christopher Reid still feels the presence of his dead wife. SUN Funnily enough it's Aldous Huxley with his rather too well SUN organised mescalin experiment who stays earthbound. The SUN music ranges from Bach to Zappa by way of (among others) SUN Mahler Ravel Debussy Messiaen Crumb and Cage. SUN SUN Mahler at his most free time-stand-still and eastern SUN provides the background for the first three texts beginning SUN with excerpts from Blake’s “Auguries of Innocence” and “The SUN Marriage of Heaven and Hell”. In just a handful of lines SUN Blake demonstrates the mind’s limitless scope if only “the SUN doors of perception were cleansed”. SUN SUN So the journey through a variety of perceptions is begun. SUN First stop an intoxicating Paradise (one of several we will SUN encounter) courtesy of St Ephrem the Syrian. Staying in the SUN orient Ravel’s “Asie” leads us to one of our three opium SUN addicts Samuel Taylor Coleridge and his drugs poem “Kubla SUN Khan” – his is a paradise with sinister (if distant) echoes. SUN And this oriental fantasy with its “sunny pleasure dome with SUN caves of ice” is evoked by Grainger’s chiming arrangement of SUN Debussy’s “Pagodes”. Beside Coleridge’s vivid fantasy Aldous SUN Huxley’s trouser-gazing during his mescalin experiment SUN appears a mite prosaic. SUN SUN A sharp shock from George Crumb’s “Black Angels” plunges us SUN headlong into The Book of Revelation. The locusts’ buzzing SUN becomes the “sound of chariots of many horses running to SUN battle” with one of Frank Zappa’s psychedelic bass lines. SUN Next a frenetic nightmare chase by Bartok into the SUN drug-induced dreams of that most famous of SUN nineteenth-century addicts Thomas De Quincey. A family man SUN De Quincey is woken by his adoring children and a Bach aria SUN that seems to combine both innocence and sadness. SUN SUN A hookah-smoking caterpillar a mushroom and a little girl. SUN Like so much she imbibes in Lewis Carroll’s book Alice finds SUN that eating the mushroom has peculiar results; Grace Slick’s SUN “White Rabbit” lists both those and others. With the SUN unlikely paring of Messiaen at his most dreamily spiritual SUN and addict No. 3 Charles Baudelaire our trip has really SUN taken off. But with a knock on the door reality soon hits SUN home and his hateful life resumes with all the bleakness of SUN a Shostakovich Quartet. SUN SUN Julian of Norwich alternates between ecstasy and unbearable SUN pain to the tune of John Sheppard’s “Media in vita morte SUN sum” and Shubert’s Quintet introduces and ends Sylvia SUN Plath’s fevered ravings. To close Christopher Reid’s SUN movingly understated “Late” and time to reflect with Cage’s SUN static and dreamy “In a Landscape”. The book which fulfils a promise Pullman TUE made to the Archbishop to write about Jesus and his place in TUE Christian worship is a re-telling of the Bible story. TUE Pullman uses it to examine the way in which the Christian TUE Church formulated its beliefs and established a canon of TUE scripture and at the same time explores his long-standing TUE fascination with the figure of Christ himself. TUE TUE Philip Dodd meets Pullman at his home in Oxfordshire and in TUE Night Waves we hear the outcome: a conversation that should TUE range from religion and literature to contemporary politics TUE and civic duty.
