For Gardiner Berlioz is perhaps the greatest of MON French composers and he speaks with a lifetime's experience MON of studying and performing this remarkable music. MON Today's programme focuses on a single work the Messe MON solennelle which Berlioz composed at the tender age of 21. MON Long thought lost - the composer incinerated the parts after MON only two performances - the score turned up in 1992 in an MON oak chest in an Antwerp organ loft where it had lain MON unnoticed for over a century the accidental discovery of a MON retired music teacher called Frans Moors who had been MON hunting for a copy of Mozart's Coronation Mass. Yet 'the art of MON dying' has been a defining notion throughout history. Mary MON Beard Professor of Classics at Cambridge explains how the MON Romans and Greeks approached death and asks whether scenes MON of showmanship famous last words and stoical endings really MON can help us when we come to face our own inevitable demise. MON MON In these five frank and powerful essays writers and thinkers MON ponder the art of dying and confront taboos around death. MON They will look at what makes a 'good death' today - is it MON merely having lived a good life or is there something MON intrinsically important in dying well? And now that our MON deaths tend to occur in the sterile surroundings of a MON hospital ward rather than at home surrounded by those we MON love will reflect on how this distancing from death and loss MON of control over our demise has changed our relationship with MON dying. For Gardiner Berlioz is perhaps the greatest of TUE French composers and he speaks with a lifetime's experience TUE of studying and performing this remarkable music. TUE Today's programme explores two of Berlioz's symphonies - TUE Harold in Italy and Romeo and Juliet. But are they really TUE symphonies? TUE Harold includes a part for solo viola which suggests a TUE concerto; but it's more like a 'song without words' evoking TUE the spirit of Byron's Childe Harold than a true concerto TUE role. That's certainly what Paganini thought - he TUE commissioned Berlioz to write it in the first place then TUE lost interest when he realised that it wasn't going to allow TUE him sufficient scope to show off. And Romeo with its voices TUE its chorus and its plot is as much a concert opera as it is TUE a symphony closely following the action of the Shakespeare TUE play that had knocked the composer's socks off when he saw TUE it in September 1827. TUE Like a pioneering horticulturalist Berlioz created new TUE musical hybrids to suit his present purpose; no wonder that TUE some of his contemporaries were confused. But in the process TUE he created some of the most thrilling dramatic and beautiful TUE music of the 19th century. For Gardiner Berlioz is perhaps the greatest of WED French composers and he speaks with a lifetime's experience WED of studying and performing this remarkable music. WED Today's programme explores Berlioz the song writer - and WED discovers that Berlioz the song writer is really just WED another aspect of Berlioz the dramatist. All of Berlioz's WED music is essentially dramatic. Often incidents in his own WED life are seen through the filter of literature - Shakespeare WED Goethe Virgil - then converted into music whether symphonic WED vocal or operatic. WED Irlande a collection of nine songs to poems by the Irish WED writer Thomas Moore is a case in point. At the time he was WED still reeling from the double impact of Shakespeare and WED Harriet Smithson - the Shakespearean heroine and future Mrs WED Berlioz. He happened to pick up a copy of Moore's poems with WED their atmosphere of heroism and patriotism all steeped in WED the soft glow of Celtic romance and it proved to be perfect WED material for him besotted with his passion for the beautiful WED Irish actress. THU THU 12:00 Composer of the Week b00g3y0r (Listen) THU Hector Berlioz (1803-1869), Episode 4 THU THU Donald Macleod explores the music of Hector Berlioz in THU conversation with Sir John Eliot Gardiner in this Composer THU of the Week 'special' recorded at the celebrated conductor's THU Dorset farm. For Gardiner Berlioz is perhaps the greatest of THU French composers and he speaks with a lifetime's experience THU of studying and performing this remarkable music. THU Today's programme explores the poetic vein of death and THU melancholy running through Berlioz's output - on the face of THU it a somewhat gloomy line of enquiry but in fact one that THU brings together an astonishing variety of reflections on THU mortality. THU On Berlioz's third attempt to win the coveted Prix de Rome THU in 1829 he was thought to be a shoo-in. In fact he blew it. THU Rather than submitting a 'safe' conventional piece designed THU to impress the academic judges he produced a highly original THU work that was held by the judiciary to 'betray dangerous THU tendencies'. That work was The Death of Cleopatra and the THU prize was not awarded. THU Barely a decade later Berlioz was considered sufficiently THU part of the French musical establishment to be commissioned THU to write music for a grand ceremony to mark the 10th THU anniversary of the July Revolution. In response he composed THU what he called his Grande Symphonie Funèbre et Triomphale THU scored for a huge military band of 200 players. In the event THU despite careful rehearsal the day before and the huge sound THU made by so many musicians the noise of the crowds was such THU that hardly a note of the music was heard. THU The programme ends with Tristia - 'Sad Things' a title THU borrowed from Ovid. It's a triptych of reflective pieces THU including the well-known Death of Ophelia and the less THU well-known Funeral March for the Final Scene of Hamlet. THU Listeners of a nervous disposition should be alerted to the THU volley of musket fire at the climax of the piece - a musical THU counterpart to Fortinbras's speech: 'Go bid the soldiers' THU shoot!'. But THU this isn't the last huzzah: they're planning a takeover. So THU begins Posh a fictional portrayal and political attack on an THU elite dining society with uncanny similarities to Oxford THU University's Bullingdon Club. Identified in Night Waves' New THU Voices series earlier this year Laura Wade's play is being THU put on at the Royal Court of whose young writers programme THU the playwright is a graduate.
