Robin Holloway talks about the appeal SAT for contemporary composers of Schumann's music, plus a SAT report on classical club nights. SAT SAT Jonathan Nott SAT SAT English conductor Jonathan Nott has made his career so far SAT on the Continent, working in German opera houses in SAT Wiesbaden and Frankfurt, as Principal Conductor of Pierre SAT Boulez’s Ensemble Intercontemporain, and, since 2000, Music SAT Director of the Bamberg Symphony Orchestra. Born in Solihull SAT he is now about to make his debut with the City of SAT Birmingham Symphony Orchestra. SAT SAT Jonathan talks to Tom Service about what makes German SAT orchestral culture special, about the award-winning Mahler SAT cycle he’s building up in concert and on disc, and how he SAT connects music from Boulez to Beethoven. SAT SAT Janacek Operas SAT SAT A new book by American musicologist Derek Katz seeks to SAT challenge the myths surrounding the operas of Leos Janacek. SAT The composer’s reputation is often reduced to a few brief SAT headlines – his Czech nationalism, his obsession with the SAT speech melodies of his native language, and his love for the SAT youthful Kamila Stösslova. In ‘Janacek: Beyond the Borders’, SAT Katz questions the prevailing views and claims that the SAT operas are indebted to various operatic traditions outside SAT of the Czech-speaking realm. SAT SAT Tom talks to the author and is also joined by tenor Ian SAT Bostridge and director David Alden to discuss the SAT significance of these ideas to their practical SAT interpretations and performances of the music. SAT SAT Why Schumann…? SAT SAT Radio 3’s Schumann 200 season is exploring a number of SAT facets of the composer’s life in this his anniversary year. SAT But why is he so essential to so many contemporary SAT composers? Wolfgang Rihm, György Kurtag, Aribert Reimann, SAT Jörg Widmann, and Heinz Holliger are just a selection for SAT whom he is a continual source of ideas. SAT SAT Robin Holloway describes Schumann as ‘the composers’s SAT composer’ and has himself written a number of Schumann SAT inspired pieces. Here he reflects on his own relationship SAT with the composer and asks Why Schumann…? SAT SAT Classical Club Nights SAT SAT A new musical scene has been developing in recent years as a SAT host of classical club nights have sought to take SAT contemporary classical music out of the convention-bound SAT concert hall, and present it in new contexts to new audiences. SAT SAT Tom went along to Nonclassical in East London to see and SAT hear for himself and to meet the night’s founder Gabriel SAT Prokofiev. And harpist Catrin Finch, fresh from a SAT performance at the Limelight club on Oxford St, and Matt SAT Fretton who launched one of the first nights ‘This isn’t for SAT you’ join Tom to discuss the thinking behind these nights SAT and how successful they really are. SAT SAT 13:00 The Early Music Show b00sq42f (Listen) SAT Ghostwriter: The Story of Henri Desmarest SAT SAT Henry Desmarest was obviously a talented musican and SAT composer, first boy page and then musician in Louis XIV's SAT court, he began ghost-writing Grands Motets for one of the SAT chapel directors Nicholas Goupillet when he was in his early SAT twenties. After a decade, this scandal was uncovered, but it SAT was not the last of Desmarest's woes! A few years later, he SAT fell in love with one of his pupils, who also happened to be SAT the daughter of a wealthy and powerful man who managed to SAT get the composer sentenced to death, forcing Desmarest to SAT spend the rest of his days in exile. But SAT despite - or perhaps because of - the fact that it was a SAT largely one-sided affair on his part, he poured his passion SAT into the music he wrote in the last decade of his life and SAT created a series of undoubted masterpieces, including the SAT first of his four late operas, Katya Kabanova. It tells the SAT tragic story of a woman trapped in a loveless marriage, SAT stifled by provincial society -and the mother-in-law from SAT hell. Katya has her brief moment of extra-marital passion SAT which inexorably leads to her suicide. SAT SAT The pared-down intensity of Janacek's opera with its short, SAT terse, scenes was echoed in director David Alden's acclaimed SAT production, with American soprano Patricia Racette, making SAT her English National Opera debut in the title role. SUN SUN 13:00 The BBC's Big Concert b00sq48v (Listen) SUN Live from London SUN SUN BBC Symphony Orchestra at Maida Vale Studios, London SUN SUN Three key aspects of the BBC Symphony Orchestra's work are SUN reflected in this programme. First, Dvorak's thrilling SUN Scherzo Capriccioso represents the orchestra's commitment to SUN the core Czech repertoire, which it has been performing, SUN broadcasting and recording in authoritative readings under SUN its Chief Conductor, Jiri Belohlavek, over the past four SUN years. SUN SUN Mozart's tuneful Exsultate Jubilate features former New SUN Generation Artist Ailish Tynan as soloist. The Orchestra is SUN committed to fostering young talent and over the past decade SUN has helped Radio 3 New Generation Artists gain vital SUN experience, launching them on starry international careers. SUN SUN Foerster's Fourth Symphony, his orchestral masterpiece, SUN reflects the Orchestra's exploration of the more unusual SUN corners of the Czech repertoire. It gained its subtitle SUN "Easter" after the composer wrote that he started composing SUN it on Good Friday 1904 'deeply moved by the spirit of Holy SUN Week'. This colourful 20th century work - whilst popular in SUN its homeland - is rarely heard outside the Czech Republic SUN and demonstrates the Orchestra's dedication to introducing SUN new and neglected music to its audiences. SUN SUN Dvorak: Scherzo capriccioso (Op.66) SUN Mozart: Exsultate, jubilate - motet for soprano and SUN orchestra (K.165) SUN Foerster: Symphony no. 4 (Op.54) in C minor "Easter" (London SUN Premiere) SUN Ailish Tynan, soprano SUN Jiri Belohlavek, conductor SUN SUN In the short interval, there will be a chance to find out SUN more about the Orchestra's fostering of talent - young and SUN not so young. The Total Immersion days this season explored SUN the music of three living composers: George Crumb, Hans SUN Werner Henze and Wolfgang Rihm. The Orchestra's Learning SUN Projects involved students of performance and composition SUN from the Guildhall School of Music and Drama and - coming SUN together for a special George Crumb event - amateur SUN musicians aged six to eighty from a range of different SUN institutions and backgrounds. SUN SUN 14:30 The BBC's Big Concert b00sq4dd (Listen) SUN Live from Glasgow SUN SUN BBC Scottish Symphony Orchestra at City Halls, Glasgow SUN SUN The BBC Scottish Symphony Orchestra plays a 75th Birthday SUN programme close to its heart. The music of Sibelius has been SUN important to the Orchestra ever since the composer sent a SUN telegram to its founding conductor, Ian Whyte, saying that SUN the broadcast of his Second Symphony was the first time he SUN had heard it properly. Korngold's romantic Violin Concerto SUN is played by one of the Orchestra's favourite visiting SUN soloists, Ilya Gringolts, and there is a UK premiere from SUN local composer Sally Beamish. Her piece is dedicated to Sir SUN Peter Maxwell Davies in his 75th year - a composer who has SUN had a long association with the Orchestra, particularly at SUN the festival he founded in Orkney. It also represents the SUN Orchestra's ongoing commitment to championing new music. The SUN programme finishes with music by Bartok, who loved Glasgow SUN and the Scottish folk music traditions which mirror his use SUN of Hungarian Folk Music. His music has been championed by SUN the Orchestra, particularly during the last ten years under SUN the tenure of its previous chief conductor. This celebratory SUN concert is conducted by Scottish-born Garry Walker. SUN SUN Sibelius: Finlandia (Op.26) SUN Korngold: Violin Concerto (Op.35) in D major SUN Sally Beamish: A Cage of Doves (UK Premiere) SUN Bartok: The Miraculous Mandarin Suite (Sz.73) SUN SUN Ilya Gringolts (violin) SUN Garry Walker (conductor) SUN SUN During the concert, there is a chance to hear about some of SUN the Orchestra's wide-ranging outreach work in the SUN communities of Scotland, including Sistema Scotland based in SUN Stirling, which is using music to build a strong society. SUN Plus a report from the "come and sing" Mozart Requiem for SUN the people of Glasgow and the wider area which took place SUN yesterday as part of the Orchestra's "Listen Here" Weekend SUN of open doors. And a number of key individuals explain what SUN the orchestra has meant, and still means to them as it SUN reaches its 75th Birthday year. Composers Sir Peter Maxwell SUN Davis and Sally Beamish will also join the Orchestra live in SUN City Halls Glasgow to talk about the UK premiere of Sally's SUN piece. SUN SUN A concert from the BBC National Orchestra of Wales' new home SUN at the Wales Millennium Centre in Cardiff Bay. French music SUN has featured strongly in Principal Conductor Thierry SUN Fischer's programming with the Orchestra over the past four SUN years, and it's at the heart of this programme too. SUN Unbridled imagination and a passion for Shakespeare fired SUN Berlioz to write his dramatic overture, written in a burst SUN of energy in just three weeks. Shakespeare is also the SUN subject of Massenet's suite - three short symphonic poems on SUN the subjects of Ariel, Desdemona and Macbeth. And Ravel's La SUN Valse, written for Diaghilev, conjures up a vivid and SUN violent picture of pre-First World War Viennese ballrooms. SUN SUN Naturally, Welsh music is central to the activities of the SUN Orchestra and Chorus, and Adrian Partington conducts a SUN jubilant Psalm of praise by William Mathias. Contemporary SUN music is also important in the Orchestra's life, and for the SUN opening of this new hall, Composer in Association Simon Holt SUN has created a short work in honour of St. Vitus, patron SUN saint of actors, comedians and dancers - among others. SUN SUN Berlioz: King Lear Overture (Op.4) SUN Simon Holt: St. Vitus in the kettle SUN Massenet: Suite No.3 "Scenes dramatiques"* SUN Mathias: Psalm 150 "Laudate Dominum" for chorus and SUN orchestra (Op.44/1)* SUN Ravel: La Valse SUN BBC National Orchestra and Chorus of Wales; SUN Thierry Fischer, conductor SUN Adrian Partington, conductor* SUN SUN During the concert Sarah Walker talks to Thierry Fischer as SUN he looks forward to the BBC Proms and his artistic vision SUN for the Orchestra's new season. And SUN animateur Andy Pidcock, who is a workshop leader with the SUN Education and Community Department of the Orchestra, SUN describes an upcoming project taking the Orchestra to work SUN with special needs children throughout Wales. SUN SUN 18:30 The BBC's Big Concert b00sq4lb (Listen) SUN Live from Plymouth SUN SUN BBC Concert Orchestra at Plymouth Pavilions. SUN SUN As the UK's most versatile orchestra, the BBC Concert SUN Orchestra has long been at the heart of British music, SUN promoting the quality and craftsmanship of composers who SUN form an indispensible part of British culture and character. SUN SUN Conducted by MGM Prom star John Wilson, the programme's SUN theme is Best of British and takes its inspiration from the SUN West Country, with Malcolm Arnold's Four Cornish Dances and SUN music from Dorset composer Peter Hope. Not forgetting SUN Plymouth's long history as a naval city, there's also Lady SUN Barbara from Robert Farnon's Captain Horatio Hornblower SUN Suite, and the concert ends with Vaughan Williams' Sea Songs. SUN SUN The Orchestra is joined by star of stage and screen, the SUN larger-than-life Brian Blessed, to narrate Paul Patterson's SUN musical retelling of Roald Dahl's magnificent Three Little SUN Pigs, during which audiences will have a unique opportunity SUN to join in live on BBC Radio 3, as together they'll huff, SUN and puff, and blow the house down! SUN SUN And finally, soprano Charlotte Page recalls the heady days SUN of light music with a selection from Ivor Novello and Noel SUN Coward. In March this year the Orchestra went on a tour of SUN the East of England playing to over seven thousand young SUN people, and a further three hundred had the opportunity to SUN be on stage with the Orchestra and have coaching from BBC SUN musicians. The project is running again tomorrow in the SUN Plymouth Pavilions, with around four thousand students from SUN Devon and Cornwall. SUN SUN 20:00 The BBC's Big Concert b00sq4ld (Listen) SUN BBC Singers - Live from London SUN SUN BBC Singers at St Paul's Knightsbridge. SUN SUN The BBC Singers have the largest and broadest repertoire of SUN any professional choral group, and their programme at St SUN Paul's shows their versatility, spanning four hundred years SUN of the choral repertoire, beginning with William Byrd's Mass SUN - one of the sacred masterpieces of the Tudor period, SUN conducted by Chief Conductor David Hill. Then Principal SUN Guest Conductor Bob Chilcott conducts three works composed SUN by the Singers' Associate Composers over the last six years, SUN plus a piece of his own - which requires audience SUN participation! And to conclude the concert, David Hill SUN directs three choral classics which were commissioned for SUN and premiered by the BBC Singers in the 1940s. Tippett's The SUN Weeping Babe and Britten's Shepherd's Carol are amongst the SUN group's earliest commissions - composed for a programme SUN called A Poet's Christmas which was broadcast in 1944. And SUN Poulenc's monumental wartime cantata for unaccompanied SUN voices, composed as a hymn to freedom in occupied France SUN during the summer of 1943 was given its first performance a SUN few months later by the BBC Singers in the Concert Hall of SUN Broadcasting House. It is one of the most thrilling and SUN powerful works in the entire choral repertoire. SUN SUN Byrd: Mass for five voices SUN Gabriel Jackson: To Music* SUN Judith Bingham: Water Lilies* SUN Edward Cowie: Lyre-Bird Motet* SUN Bob Chilcott - I am the song (with audience participation)* SUN Britten: A Shepherd's Carol SUN Tippett: The Weeping Babe SUN Poulenc: Figure Humaine SUN David Hill, conductor; SUN Bob Chilcott, conductor* SUN SUN In the two intervals in the concert, there is a montage of SUN reminiscences from the Singers' activities over nearly 90 SUN years of their history, and a bird's-eye-view of the group's SUN present-day outreach and learning initiatives - which SUN include projects with children, young professional SUN conductors and composers, and the amateur choral community at large. SUN SUN 21:30 The BBC's Big Concert b00sq4lg (Listen) SUN Live from Belfast SUN SUN Ulster Orchestra at Ulster Hall, Belfast. SUN SUN The Ulster Orchestra, founded in 1966, is Northern Ireland's SUN only full time orchestra. It promotes its own international SUN season and twenty BBC concerts each year in the Ulster Hall. SUN These range from exploring lesser known classical works, to SUN premiering new works by local composers, from educational SUN concerts to community concerts, and from providing debut SUN opportunities for young musicians to staging the biggest SUN classical music party of the year: Proms in the Park. SUN SUN Tonight's concert features a new work - a Radio 3 commission SUN for guitar and orchestra entitled Roots. Written by the SUN young Irish composer Ciaran Farrell, it combines classical, SUN folk and pop elements in an orchestral concerto context, and SUN highlights the versatility of the orchestra. This contrasts SUN with the fine lines of Prokofiev's Classical Symphony and SUN the sense of place inherent in Copland's Appalachian Spring, SUN and the concert ends in true Ulster fashion with one of the SUN loveliest of Irish airs. SUN SUN Prokofiev: Symphony No.1 (Op.25) in D major "Classical" SUN Ciaran Farrell: Roots for Guitar and Orchestra (Radio 3 SUN Commission and World Premiere) SUN Copland: Appalachian Spring SUN Joan Trimble: The Boyne Water SUN Craig Ogden, guitar; SUN David Porcelijn, conductor. He wrote a MON wealth of innovative music for the church, court, opera MON house, concert hall and private home. Telemann was an astute MON business man too, in tune with the changing tastes of his MON time. He made music more widely available by putting on MON regular series of public concerts and publishing collections MON of his own works for anyone willing and able to buy. MON MON Telemann broke new ground with the dramatic nature of his MON church cantatas in a move to make them more palatable to the MON congregation. MON MON In the first programme, Donald Macleod features some of this MON early music, including a church cantata set to a text by the MON foremost cantata poet of the time, a concerto for four MON violins and an orchestral suite which draws on the popular MON figures of the commedia dell'arte. FRI FRI 19:00 Performance on 3 b00sq5tx (Listen) FRI Schumann, Mozart, Brahms, Part 1 FRI FRI Live from St Paul's Knightsbridge in London, Martin Handley FRI presents a concert culminating with Brahms's A German FRI Requiem. Composed after the death of his mother, this is one FRI of Brahms's greatest works and, with its themes of FRI consolation and comfort, a piece often described as a FRI Requiem for the living, rather than the dead. Here it's FRI performed in Brahms's arrangement for piano duet, which FRI brings an intimacy to this magisterial piece. FRI FRI 19:40 Twenty Minutes b00sq5tz (Listen) FRI Denglisch No More? FRI FRI Award-winning German broadcasters Thomas Franke and Gesine FRI Dornbluth explore the seemingly unstoppable rising tide of FRI English language being used today in German, and recent - FRI not entirely successful - attempts to mount a resistance. FRI FRI When Deutsche Bahn, the German railway operator, announced FRI in February that no longer would their stations have "Kiss FRI and Ride Zones" or offer a "Call-a-Bike" service, it became FRI a minor international news item. Because, for generations FRI now, contemporary German has become littered with forms of FRI English words. And they're not just those ubiquitous FRI neologisms such as "Handy" for mobile phone and "Beamer" for FRI projector. Says Thomas "in daily German you find a "dating FRI agentur", where "singles" are looking for partners, um ein FRI "Date" zu haben. If they are successful they maybe have a FRI "candlelightdinner" and later they hopefully practise "safer FRI sex". In the morning they go to the "Back shop" around the FRI corner to buy bread." And, he adds, when he recently called FRI someone at the topically Germanising Deutsche Bahn, his FRI secretary regretted that he was "in einem Meeting". So much FRI for new German brooms. FRI Might the Internet, despite its wonderful power as a FRI repository of information and creativity, be slowly FRI degrading or enhancing our mental abilities? Are our brains FRI ready for it? FRI FRI Producer Matt Thompson. FRI FRI 23:15 World on 3 b00sq5v7 (Listen) FRI Tony McManus FRI FRI Mary Ann Kennedy with music from across the globe, plus a FRI session with Scots - Canadian guitarist Tony McManus. FRI FRI Tony McManus has been acclaimed as 'the finest guitarist FRI Scotland has ever produced' and 'the Jeff Beck of the FRI acoustic guitar'. He is currently on a rare visit to the UK FRI from his home in Canada, but it was before his move that he FRI made his reputation in Scotland, playing in the lively FRI session scene in Glasgow and Edinburgh. He has cultivated FRI his own 'Celtic' style of guitar playing, which reflects all FRI the phrasing and ornaments of traditional Scots pipe or FRI fiddle music. FRI
