After SAT then the opera was occasionally performed in Italy but in a SAT censored version, and the opera's twentieth century revival SAT was in 1958. The opera is SAT now considered one of Donizetti's most powerful and SAT compelling, culminating in a dramatic final scene. It's one of the most SAT remarkable pieces of prose poetry ever written; a mixture of SAT autobiography and enigmatic dream sequence in which Rimbaud SAT looks back in despair over his life as a poet. It combines SAT lucid self-appraisal with demented vision and moves with SAT extraordinary agility between hyper-realism and SAT hallucinatory surrealism; in its synthesis of sounds, SAT colours, odours and intensely visual images it one of the SAT highest achievements of symbolist writing. The twenty-five SAT pages of 'A Season in Hell', here cut to a third of its SAT length, are both a staggering testimony to and a tortured SAT recantation of Rimbaud's poetic credo, the 'disordering of SAT all the senses'. Narrated by Carl Prekopp. SAT Composer Elizabeth Purnell has created a soundscape for the SAT work which includes composed music, field recordings and SAT processed sound in a raw response to the words. She set the SAT poems specifically for Robert Wyatt whose voice in its high, SAT delicate register suggests a beyond-the-grave alter-ego to SAT the young Rimbaud. This version is a fierce abridgement of SAT the original, but offers a startling insight into its power SAT and beauty. It contains some language that might now give SAT offence. So SUN what makes something last? Does it have to be long, large, SUN loud and luminous or is there room for something small and SUN subtle, even discreet? It seems like only yesterday that we SUN coveted tiny transistors and tiny phones. Now I suppose some SUN of us like tiny cars but otherwise the macro seems to hold SUN sway over the micro. To redress the balance, this week’s SUN Words and Music is a tribute to the miniature…small moments SUN when sublime contrivance stops the flow of hours, minutes SUN and seconds to allow us a moment of contemplation and delight. SUN SUN One man’s miniature is another’s epic, so Summer Nights on SUN the River is a miniature for Delius but would be an epic for SUN Webern whose Cello Sonata lasts less than half as long. The SUN elasticity of the notion is borne out by the inclusion of SUN pieces by Stravinsky, Sidney Bechet and Gyorgy Kurtag SUN amongst others as well as in short, short stories such as SUN Slawomir Mrozek’s comical I want to be a Horse or The Fish SUN by Lydia Davis. The programme, as you might expect, includes SUN a few haiku but there are surprises too, such as the entry SUN from W.N.P. Barbellion’s Journal of a Disappointed Man – a SUN brilliant shard of writing about the way we can be ambushed SUN by happiness. SUN SUN If brevity is indeed the soul of wit, then the actors John SUN Rowe and Lia Williams were made to be her jesters. MON MON 12:00 Composer of the Week b00fhpbz (Listen) MON Michael Haydn, Episode 1 MON MON He was respected by Mozart, revered by Schubert, and MON regarded during his lifetime as the leading contemporary MON composer of church music. Who was he? The answer is Michael MON - yes, Michael - Haydn. Johann Michael Haydn, to give him MON his full name, has come down to posterity as little more MON than a footnote in the biography of his celebrated older MON brother, Joseph. After all, Joseph Haydn was 'father' of the MON symphony and the string quartet - and Michael wasn't. MON MON Michael Haydn may be less historically significant than MON Joseph, but he's nonetheless an important composer in his MON own right, and his achievement has been overshadowed in a MON way that it might perhaps not have been had he borne a MON different family name. FRI FRI 12:00 Composer of the Week b00fj443 (Listen) FRI Michael Haydn, Episode 5 FRI FRI Michael Haydn composed 20 symphonies during the 1780s, but FRI his Symphony in A major, written in 1789, was to be his FRI last. Perhaps he decided he had nothing further to FRI contribute to a genre which already included Mozart's FRI 'Jupiter', composed the previous year. Or perhaps he was FRI simply kept too busy writing church music. FRI Towards the end of 1800, Haydn's cosy and somewhat FRI uneventful life was rudely interrupted by history - FRI Napoleon's forces occupied Salzburg, and his apartment was FRI looted. He was robbed of two silver watches and a month's FRI wages, and the following year he travelled to Vienna in FRI search of new income. One result was a commission from FRI Empress Maria Theresa. Another was the offer of the position FRI of Kapellmeister at Eisenstadt, taking over the reins from FRI his brother Joseph - to his subsequent regret, he turned it FRI down. FRI The story of Michael Haydn closes with another Maria Theresa FRI commission - the Missa sub Titulo Sti. Leopoldi, written for FRI the Feast of the Holy Innocents on 28 December 1805 and FRI appropriately featuring boys voices. It's a charming work FRI and a fitting conclusion to half a century of extraordinary FRI musical productivity. Following a spot at New York's Knitting Factory in FRI 2001, Curreri received several tour invitations from Kelly FRI Joe Phelps. Over the next four years, the two would play FRI over 100 concerts together. Two albums followed and Curreri's fifth FRI album, The Velvet Rut, was released in the UK on Tin Angel FRI Records in June 2007. Curreri played all the accompanying FRI instruments himself. FRI In July 2008, Curreri suffered a major throat injury, which FRI caused him to cancel the majority of his remaining concerts FRI for the year. Reports from Charlottesville are that he can FRI be seen riding his vintage Honda CB750 motorcycle through FRI the countryside.
