SAT SAT 13:00 The Early Music Show b01hq1gr (Listen) SAT The Stylus Fantasticus SAT SAT Lucie Skeaping presents a focus on the "stylus fantasticus" SAT genre of programmatic music which flourished in Bohemia SAT during the 17th Century. It was the style favoured by the SAT Bishop of Olomouc-Kromeriz, in what's now the Czech SAT Republic. An enormously sociable fellow - and also a Prince SAT - he spent his summers entertaining friends and relations in SAT the fabulous Kromeriz Castle where he laid on for them SAT lavish feasts, plays, ballets and concerts. SAT The root of the music was the ground-breaking toccatas by SAT the Venetian organist & composer Claudio Merulo, and through SAT him, other keyboard composers such as Girolamo Frescobaldi SAT and Johann Jakob Froberger who took the style further. The SAT stylus fantasticus or "fantasy style" developed under the SAT Prince Bishop's patronage and was perfect for the SAT light-hearted summer entertainments at the Kromeriz Castle SAT parties. The most famous practitioner of the "stylus SAT fantsaticus" was Heinrich Biber, whose colourful "Battalia" SAT invokes a military encampment by means of trumpet and drum SAT motifs - full of imagination and wit. We hear eight drunken SAT musketeers singing their native songs, officers engaging in SAT elegant fencing, horses and cavalry, a battle complete with SAT trumpet flourishes and shots, and finally the lament of the SAT wounded musketeers. THU THU 20:10 Twenty Minutes b01hrjrn (Listen) THU The Meaning of Maturity THU THU 'The Ripening' is Josef Suk's masterpiece. So it has THU overshadowed the work that inspired it - and from which Suk THU took his title. 'The Ripening', sometimes translated as THU 'Maturity', is a poem by Antonin Sova. He was a shy THU librarian who suffered from a spinal disease. But he was a THU signatory to the major modernist literary manifesto - the THU 'Ceská moderna' - in 1895, and became a leading Czech THU Impressionist and Symbolist poet in the early part of the THU 20th century. THU THU This was a time when what would soon become Czechoslovakia THU was in intellectual, cultural, linguistic and political THU ferment. Suk's composition was premiered by Václav Talich in THU 1918 while the country still awaited the Treaty of THU Versailles which would, after centuries of oppression, free THU it from the Austro-Hungarian Empire. THU THU Sova was deeply affected by the death of his mother, and Suk THU had also suffered personal losses - his wife (Dvorak's THU daughter) - as well as his parents had died. So the maturity THU of the title might be both the country's and Sova and Suk's THU own ripening - Suk was in his forties when he composed the THU piece. Paul Allen sets the context with the aid of Czech THU music specialist Geoff Chew, and, examines a poem barely THU known in English - illustrated by a new translation of it. THU THU Paul notes, too (in Olympic year), that Suk won a silver THU medal for composition at the Los Angeles Olympics 14 years THU later. THU THU Producer Julian May.
