SAT SAT 21:30 Between the Ears b00xmv11 (Listen) SAT The Cost of Coal SAT SAT The media's fascination with mining disasters is nothing SAT new. In 1936 in Moose River, Canada, a mine entrance SAT collapsed when a tree fell over the shaft. It was assumed SAT the men were dead. Five days later a faint tapping was SAT heard. Canadian radio sent a journalist, J. Frank Willis, to SAT start a live hourly broadcast from the head of the SAT mineshaft, which was carried on 650 radio stations across SAT North America. This was three quarters of a century ago and SAT a turning point in radio history. SAT SAT In 2010, there were times when it was hard to remember that SAT the situation at the San Jose copper mine in Chile, where 33 SAT men were awaiting rescue, was reality, rather than reality SAT TV. The media circus that descended on the Atacama Desert - SAT setting up camp at the top of the mine - created an SAT atmosphere, at times, almost of a game show. Yet the mine SAT disaster in New Zealand that followed shortly afterwards, SAT with its tragic outcome, disappeared swiftly from the front SAT pages and TV headlines of the world. The thought of such SAT confinement underground is almost unthinkable, unless a SAT splinter of light can pierce its darkness - bringing home to SAT the audience the possibility of salvation. SAT SAT The fear and exploitation of fear of being trapped SAT underground - from real life to the stories of Edgar Allan SAT Poe - is reflected here, using sounds, media archive, the SAT words of the mining poet and blogger Mark Nowak SAT (http://coalmountain.wordpress.com), coal miner Willie SAT McGranaghan, and Newfoundland sound man Chris Brookes. The SAT very natural fear nascent in all of us of being buried SAT alive, and the contradictions in the low-status dangerous SAT work of the miner, and the treasure it produces, are SAT powerful themes which create the most compelling horror SAT fiction and news stories alike. SAT SAT Producer Sara Jane Hall. SAT SAT 22:00 Pre-Hear b01hz7wl (Listen) SAT Richard Ayres - Noncerto SAT SAT British composer Richard Ayres is known for his SAT idiosyncratic takes on some of the more hallowed conventions SAT of the orchestral repertory. His series of so-called SAT 'Noncertos' cast the soloist in unusual or unfamiliar (or SAT uncomfortable) scenarios in which the conventional SAT relationship between the individual and the crowd is SAT subverted to tragi-comic effect. In 'No.36' a 'Noncerto' for SAT horn and orchestra, the soloist is an outsider, trying to SAT integrate with the ensemble, whether by calling across SAT mountain peaks (and being its own echo), standing outside SAT the gates of Heaven or narrating a series of silent-film SAT vignettes in a quasi Buster Keaton role. This solo horn SAT here, despite its tumescent Straussian associations, is an SAT uncertain hero ('Noncerto' is a pun on Concerto and the SAT Italian for 'uncertain'). SUN SUN The Medieval Cathedral church of St Michael was destroyed SUN during a bombing raid by the Luftwaffe during the night of SUN November 14th 1940. It was the first time that a city had SUN been deliberately targeted and totally destroyed in this way SUN and it brought a new word into the English language - from SUN then on, any city that was completely flattened by a bombing SUN raid would be "Coventrated". This event was to change the SUN course of World War 2. SUN SUN From the moment The Rev Arthur Wales stood amongst the SUN rubble in 1940 and formed three giant 14th Century iron SUN nails into a cross, Coventry Cathedral became an SUN international symbol of reconciliation. SUN SUN Right from the beginning there was controversy. Plans were SUN made straight away to rebuild the cathedral, but the SUN appointed architect - Giles Gilbert Scott - resigned over SUN criticism of his design, and it was thrown open to SUN competition. Many thought Basil Spence's winning design was SUN too modern, irrelevant and an expensive white elephant. SUN There was a raging battle with the local council about SUN obtaining a license to build which went on for years before SUN plans could go ahead. SUN SUN The new cathedral was designed to encompass its worldwide SUN message of peace and consecrated 50 years ago on 25th May SUN 1962. Like the city itself rising phoenix-like from the SUN ashes, it represented new hope, pulling together the SUN foremost British architects, artists, sculptors, craftsmen, SUN musicians and performers of the day, effectively creating a SUN cultural snapshot of 60s Britain. These included the SUN architect Basil Spence, John Hutton, Jacob Epstein, Graham SUN Sutherland, John Piper and Elizabeth Frink, to name but a SUN few. SUN SUN In spite of the difficulties, the feverish excitement when SUN the new cathedral opened was felt throughout Coventry and SUN the Midlands. The message of peace and reconciliation chimed SUN in with the mood of the 60s and there were long queues of SUN long-haired, mini-skirted visitors winding through the SUN surrounding cobbled streets, desperate to witness for SUN themselves such an overtly modern creation. SUN SUN A three-week festival took place to celebrate the SUN consecration which included drama, sport, pageantry, poetry SUN and exhibitions. Coventry became a cauldron of culture not SUN seen in the UK since the Festival of Britain. SUN SUN The most famous musical legacy from the cathedral's SUN consecration is Britten's War Requiem, now a recognised SUN modern masterpiece, but other well known composers also SUN wrote commemorative works including Arthur Bliss, Herbert SUN Howells, William Walton and Duke Ellington. Michael SUN Tippett's "King Priam" was premiered the night before the SUN War Requiem. SUN SUN In modern times the Cathedral has built a reputation for SUN being at the forefront of international reconciliation SUN through its links with other war-damaged cities and its SUN spiritual message of peace, with a particularly strong link SUN to Dresden in Germany. SUN SUN Giles Fraser is a former canon of St Paul's - another SUN cathedral that burned down and was rebuilt two centuries SUN ago. He is expertly placed, therefore, to discover the story SUN of Coventry Cathedral and find out how relevant such a SUN building and ministry is in today's troubled world. SUN Contributors include the opera conductor and former Coventry SUN Cathedral chorister Paul Daniel, former Cathedral organist SUN Robert Weddle, glass maker Patrick Reyntiens, Louise SUN Campbell - Reader in History of Art at Warwick University, SUN the musicologist Michael Foster who has just published a SUN book about the War Requiem, Anthony Blee - son-in-law and SUN colleague of Sir Basil Spence, members of the current SUN Cathedral clergy and members of the Frauenkirche in Dresden. With a studio session SUN by Roberto Pla and World Routes Academy protégé José SUN Hernando. SUN SUN A master timbale player, UK-based Roberto Pla has given a SUN new voice to the rhythmic sounds of his native Colombia. SUN Together with his 14-piece Latin ensemble he continues to SUN stretch the boundaries of Colombian music by infusing it SUN with his own mix of salsa, cumbia and Afro-Cuban jazz. SUN SUN Launched in 2010, the BBC Radio 3 World Routes Academy aims SUN to support and inspire young UK-based world music artists by SUN bringing them together with an internationally renowned SUN artist in the same field belonging to the same tradition. SUN This year the scheme explores the Colombian accordion folk SUN tradition called vallenato through the eyes of self-taught, SUN UK based accordionist José Hernando Arias Noguera. SUN SUN Growing up in a Colombian household, José fell in love with SUN vallenato, the popular folk style from the Caribbean coast SUN of Colombia which he learned through watching internet clips SUN and video cassettes his father brought back from Colombia. SUN José plays in a number of Latin music bands in London and SUN dreams of becoming an ambassador for Vallenato music in SUN Europe. The Colombian community constitutes the UK's second SUN largest Latin American community, and on a global scale it SUN ranks as the world's fourth largest overseas Colombian SUN immigrant population. Cannily making the TUE maximum profit possible from his hit songs by being TUE composer, lyricist and publisher in-one, by the early 1920s TUE he was already very wealthy and took possibly the biggest TUE risk of his career, building his own theatre on Broadway, TUE The Music Box. He began to socialise with the likes of TUE Dorothy Parker, Harpo Marx and HG Wells by joining the Round TUE Table Society, and in 1924 met a young woman who was to TUE become his wife, the rebellious heiress Ellin Mackay. From TUE one of the wealthiest families in America, Berlin dedicated TUE his song 'Always' to her. Although her family disapproved of TUE their union and was seen as a traitor to her class, Berlin TUE became embroiled in the Mackay family's misfortune when his TUE father-in-law incurred the biggest losses of any individual TUE during the Wall Street Crash of 1929. After a period of TUE silence after his marriage, he responded to the changed TUE social realities of the times with two satirical musicals in TUE the early 1930s, Face the Music and As Thousands Cheer.
