SAT SAT 18:50 Opera on 3 b05vgxvp (Listen) SAT Szymanowski's Krol Roger SAT SAT Szymanowski's rarely performed masterpiece, Król Roger (King SAT Roger), live from the Royal Opera House in Covent Garden SAT with Mariusz Kwiecien in the title role, conducted by SAT Antonio Pappano in a new production by Kasper Holten. SAT SAT Szymanowski's great opera, which had its premiere in 1926, SAT grew out of his passion for Mediterranean culture as an SAT amalgam of different peoples and religions. It also treats SAT some of the themes that first appeared in his lost SAT homoerotic novel Efebos. Set in 12th-century Sicily, the SAT opera traces the journey to enlightenment of the Christian SAT King Roger II through his encounter with a mysterious pagan SAT Shepherd. While Roger's court call for the Shepherd to be SAT put to death, Roger's queen Roxana urges her husband to SAT accept the Shepherd's creed. Roger gradually realizes that SAT he can only maintain his integrity by neither merely SAT upholding the law of the church, or by yielding to the wild SAT freedom (symbolised in abandoned dances) of the Shepherd and SAT his followers. In his final ecstatic soliloquy, Roger SAT attains self-realization. SAT SAT Presented by Andrew McGregor with guest, Nicholas SAT Baragwanath and including interviews with the conductor, SAT director and principal singers. Sung in Polish. SAT SAT Synopsis SAT ACT I SAT SAT The Archbishop leads the celebration of Mass in the SAT cathedral. He and the Deaconess demand that King Roger SAT punish a new self-proclaimed prophet. Roger’s advisor Edrisi SAT confirms to the King that the man, who calls himself the SAT Shepherd, is preaching a new, strange faith. Queen Roxana SAT urges King Roger to summon the Shepherd to explain himself. SAT SAT The Shepherd arrives and seductively describes his god. SAT Roxana is drawn to the Shepherd’s preachings of freedom, SAT pleasure and love and urges Roger to listen, but everyone SAT else calls for his execution for blasphemy. Roger is SAT confused, but after changing his mind several times, he lets SAT the Shepherd go free and asks him to return to for a private SAT meeting that night. SAT ACT II SAT SAT As King Roger waits for the Shepherd, he confides to Edrisi SAT his anxiety and confusion. Edrisi suggests that Roger should SAT enjoy Roxana’s embraces, which he has not sought for a long SAT time. Roxana, longing for this, urges Roger to listen to the SAT Shepherd’s philosophy of pleasure. The Shepherd arrives and SAT describes his faith, urging everyone to let go of all SAT inhibitions and only seek pleasure. He lets loose an SAT orgiastic dance, and an ecstatic crowd gathers. King Roger SAT tries to stop the Shepherd, but in vain. Roxana is drawn SAT into the ecstasy of the crowd and leaves with the Shepherd SAT and his followers. Roger knows he has to follow. SAT ACT III SAT SAT It is now King Roger who is on trial, as the Shepherd has SAT taken over power. Roger wanders among ruins searching for SAT Roxana; Edrisi repeatedly asks him to call out for her. SAT Roxana appears and urges King Roger to surrender to the SAT Shepherd. The Shepherd appears, now revealing his true face SAT as the god of pure pleasure, and demanding that everyone SAT abandon all caution to follow him blindly. His followers SAT ignite an immense sacrificial bonfire. But Roger resists the SAT Shepherd. As dawn breaks, Roger feels hopeful to build a new SAT life rather than submit to the Shepherd. FRI FRI 22:45 The Essay b05vh8th (Listen) FRI The Meaning of Trees, The Meaning of Trees, Birch FRI FRI The immediate meaning of Birch to British ears is FRI punishment. Frequently in archaeological finds of Neolithic FRI and later peoples, Birch is present as weapons, canoes, FRI spears, bowls, rope, carts, furniture and most importantly FRI its bark and root funguses as antiseptics and wound FRI dressings. She is known as the 'watchful tree' for the FRI lenticels on her oily, almost indestructible bark have been FRI interpreted as eyes' - overlooking everything happening in FRI the forest. But Birch really is a sentinel, when spring FRI comes, the birch is one of the first trees to come into FRI leaf. The silver birch is a symbol of beauty, much prized in FRI literature, poetry and photography. Birch sap can be drunk FRI neat, or used to brew wine, beer or vinegar. Birch wine is FRI said to prevent gall/kidney stones, a remedy for rheumatic FRI diseases, a cleansing mouthwash, and an acne remedy. FRI FRI A third series of these popular tree essays is again written FRI and presented by experienced essayist, Fiona Stafford, FRI Professor of Literature at Somerville College Oxford, FRI explores the symbolism, importance, topicality and surprises FRI of five more trees common in the UK. Across the series of FRI essays, our ambiguous relationship with trees is explored. FRI The three series have prompted an illustrated book of the FRI essays planned for 2015. FRI FRI Producer - Turan Ali FRI A Bona Broadcasting production for BBC Radio 3. FRI FRI 23:00 World on 3 b05vh9kz (Listen) FRI Mary Ann Kennedy - Mor Karbasi in Session FRI FRI Mary Ann Kennedy with new music from across the globe, plus FRI the Jerusalem-born singer Mor Karbasi in a live studio FRI session. FRI FRI Since she broke into the World Music scene in 2008, Mor, FRI based now in Seville, has mesmerised audiences with her FRI blend of Ladino songs, music from the exiled Jews of Spain, FRI and Latin American as well as European folk songs. Mor FRI produces her own material, which she's been composing from FRI an early age, but also relies on traditional songs across FRI continents, performing in Ladino, Hebrew, Arabic and Spanish FRI providing a fascinating bridge between ancient cultures and FRI traditions. I just want to thank this blog for informing me about a long awaited performance. Since last year, many of us fans of pianist Nobuyuki Tsujii have looked forward to hearing the airing of his debut performance of Rachmaninov's Piano Concerto No. 3 in Manchester on October 31 2014. It is finally happening on "Afternoon on 3" on May 19, but I would not have known that if not for this blog. So I and many others thank you for bringing us this happy news!
