SAT SAT Credits SAT Performer: BBC Symphony Orchestra SAT SAT 22:00 Between the Ears b046cpvb (Listen) SAT Dear Mr Eliot: When Groucho Met Tom SAT SAT Lenny Henry stars in a musical fantasy written by Jakko M SAT Jakszyk and Lenny Henry, woven round the real-life 1964 SAT dinner encounter between the greatest poet in the English SAT language of the twentieth century, TS Eliot and the SAT legendary star of A Night at the Opera, Duck Soup and Horse SAT Feathers, Groucho Marx. SAT SAT Almost exactly fifty years after the meeting in early June SAT 1964, Radio 3's adventurous feature series Between the Ears SAT brings the moment to life with the aid of Groucho Marx and SAT TS Eliot's exchange of letters. They'd been pen-pals since SAT 1961, had swapped signed photographs - Eliot particular that SAT Groucho send him a cigar-toting portrait - and compared SAT lifestories. Eliot hung his Groucho picture between his SAT portraits of WB Yeats and French poet Paul Valery - a place SAT of great honour, according to Craig Raine, celebrated poet SAT himself and biographer of Eliot, who also appears in the SAT programme. SAT SAT With Lenny Henry taking the role of Groucho, Jakko Jakszyk SAT has woven a delicate vocal and instrumental score around the SAT letters, while he and Lenny together speculate about the SAT nature of the men's seemlingly unlikely passion for each SAT other's work. SAT SAT After a number of failed arrangements, in June 1964, a car SAT arrives at the Savoy to collect Groucho and his wife to take SAT them the short distance to Eliot's home for the much-awaited SAT dinner. Yet such is the nature of celebrity that when SAT Groucho quoted lines from Eliot's The Wasteland back to him, SAT he was uninterested, and Groucho, in turn, was unable to SAT recall the scene from Duck Soup that Eliot particularly SAT loved. They parted, disappointed and a little dejected. Yet, SAT nine months later, on learning of the poet's death, Marx SAT wrote: "he was a nice man, the best epitaph any man can SAT have...". SUN SUN 'Actors by their nature are curious, fickle, insecure SUN people: flirts. They should not live together.' SUN SUN Kika's own career began in the 1960s; she made her name in a SUN series of television films, directed by Ken Loach, Dennis SUN Potter, and then, for the cinema, by Francois Truffaut. Now SUN in her early seventies, Kika Markham is still on television, SUN playing the mother of Mr Selfridge in the successful ITV SUN period drama. SUN SUN Since the big bust up with contemporary art at the beginning SUN of the 20th century, with the so-called "evil" force of SUN Modernism that Pope Pius X believed "led to the annihilation SUN of all religion", the Christian church has been a cautious SUN commissioner of contemporary art. But a voice from within, SUN that of Monsignor Gianfranco Ravasi, President of the SUN Pontifical Council for Culture, is set to end the stand-off. SUN SUN Fiona travels to Rome to meet the Cardinal and hear about SUN his passion to reinstate "the marriage between art and SUN faith". SUN SUN Ravasi has said, "There is an insoluble problem in the SUN coexistence of art and religion and faith, but there's no SUN need for the Catholic Church to retreat and lose contact SUN with the contemporary art world by remaining stuck in the SUN "reliable" neo-Gothic, neo-Romantic, neo-Classical styles SUN that are perfectly coherent with religion...It's time to SUN grow our relationship with the creative artists and creative SUN energy of the artist... " SUN SUN In London, the church of St Martin-in-the-Fields has been SUN reaching out to contemporary artists for a decade, while SUN Canon Mark Oakley at St Paul's Cathedral is equally SUN committed and is delighted that St Paul's is the first SUN setting for a permanent video work by the American artist SUN Bill Viola. SUN SUN We'll hear from artists including Cornelia Parker and SUN Dorothy Cross, who discuss the allure of Christian stories SUN and iconography in their own work, but they also reflect on SUN the contradiction of contemporary art and the Church, given SUN that art sets out to ask questions, while the Church exists SUN to console, to answer questions.
