The tale of how Henry's bedraggled SUN low-born archers, the 'happy few', overcame the French SUN nobility and their huge army, has been spun down the ages SUN ever since. SUN SUN Novelist Adam Thorpe was born and lives in France, but his SUN work, in books such as 'Ulverton', and 'On Silbury Hill', is SUN rooted in England. Exactly 600 years after that fateful St SUN Crispin's Day, Thorpe visits Azincourt, with Anne Curry, the SUN leading authority on the battle, to find out what really SUN happened. Christophe Gilliot, the director of the Museum SUN there, gives a surprising assessment of Henry. SUN SUN The actor Robert Hardy, an authority on the longbow, SUN explains the crucial impact of this weapon. Gregory Doran, SUN director of the Royal Shakespeare Company and its current SUN production of Shakespeare's Henry V, reveals how the British SUN attitude to the battle is conditioned by the play, and how SUN it is bent to the concerns of the day: Laurence Olivier's SUN film morale boosting during the Second World War; Kenneth SUN Branagh's, after the Falklands War, striking a different SUN tone. SUN SUN The battle is crucial to British identity, so Thorpe finds SUN out how it is regarded in France with historians Stephen SUN Cooper and Bertrand Schnerb, who trace the literary SUN responses to it. David Owen Norris shows how composers have SUN responded, almost always incorporating the Agincourt Carol, SUN written at the time, into their music - even today. SUN SUN Thorpe follows, too, the connection between French SUN men-at-arms charging into the arrow storm and the English at SUN the Battle of the Somme, during which his great-uncle was SUN killed, marching, through the same mud, into machine-gun SUN fire. MON MON When the sculptor Anne-Marie Nielsen created a monument to MON her husband, the Danish composer Carl Nielsen, she said she MON had wanted to capture "the forward movement, the sense of MON life, the fact that nothing stands still" in his work. From MON his early years in the woods and fields of Fyn (Funen), to MON his studies and triumph as a composer in Copenhagen, and MON years of restless travel and touring beyond, Donald Macleod MON traces the evolution of a composer determined to forge his MON own path. MON MON Towards the end of his life Carl Nielsen wrote his MON autobiography 'My childhood', which looked back at his early MON years on Fyn. The book focuses on the idyllic aspects of MON rural life, despite the fact that these were the years MON immediately following the 1864 war, when Denmark lost MON two-fifths of its land area and one third of its population. MON But the prevailing national mood led to a determination to MON "win on the inside" what had been lost on the outside. MON Reforms were put into effect and young talent fostered. MON Nielsen's musical ability took him first to Odense and then MON to Copenhagen, though as a child roaming the woods and MON fields of Fyn, he may not have been aware of how Denmark was MON changing. He achieved Hollywood fame in the TUE 1980s when he acted in the Star Wars franchise, was the Bond TUE villain to Roger Moore's 007 in For Your Eyes Only and TUE starred in Indiana Jones and the Last Crusade with Harrison TUE Ford. TUE TUE 10.30am TUE Rob places Music in Time. The spotlight is on the Baroque TUE with a movement from Bach's mighty Mass in B minor. The TUE recycling of material was a common practice for Baroque TUE composers - Bach's choral masterpiece is effectively a kind TUE of 'greatest hits', compiled in the late 1740s from a number TUE of earlier compositions, going back as far as a cantata from TUE 1712. TUE TUE 11am TUE Rob's Artist of the Week is the master violinist Frank Peter TUE Zimmermann. A thoroughly modern virtuoso - brilliant, TUE intelligent and thoughtful in works such as Szymanowski's TUE Violin Concerto No.1 and Britten's Concerto in D minor - TUE Zimmermann is also responsive to the pathos of Mozart's TUE Sonata in E minor, the autumnal strains of Brahms's Horn TUE Trio and the Gallic elegance of Saint-Saëns's Third TUE Concerto. From TUE his early years in the woods and fields of Fyn, to his life TUE in Copenhagen, and years of restless travel and touring TUE beyond, Donald Macleod traces the evolution of a composer TUE determined to forge his own path. TUE TUE When Nielsen arrived in Copenhagen as a student in 1884, the TUE atmosphere in the city was sturdily optimistic. Donald TUE Macleod traces the course of Nielsen's relationship with the TUE Danish capital, Copenhagen, where he was at first thrilled TUE by the opportunities and the new musical horizons it opened TUE up to him. But over time, as conductor of the Royal Theatre TUE Orchestra, and as a composer pushing against the German TUE domination of music, he would experience a series of bitter TUE disappointments, eventually finding the city stifling, and TUE longing to escape. Julian started out THU as a classically trained stage actor who performed with the THU Royal Shakespeare Company. He achieved Hollywood fame in the THU 1980s when he acted in the Star Wars franchise, was the Bond THU villain to Roger Moore's 007 in For Your Eyes Only and THU starred in Indiana Jones and the Last Crusade with Harrison THU Ford. His credits range from guest appearances in Doctor Who THU to providing the voice of the giant spider Aragog in Harry THU Potter and the Chamber of Secrets. THU THU 10.30am THU Rob places Music in Time as he investigates how the THU arch-Romantic Liszt pared down his extravagant style in his THU last tone poem, From the Cradle to the Grave, anticipating THU the austerity of fellow-Hungarian Bartók. THU THU 11am THU Rob's Artist of the Week is the master violinist Frank Peter THU Zimmermann. A thoroughly modern virtuoso - brilliant, THU intelligent and thoughtful in works such as Szymanowski's THU Violin Concerto No.1 and Britten's Concerto in D minor - THU Zimmermann is also responsive to the pathos of Mozart's THU Sonata in E minor, the autumnal strains of Brahms's Horn THU Trio and the Gallic elegance of Saint-Saëns's Third THU Concerto. THU THU 12:00 Composer of the Week b06kbptj (Listen) THU Carl Nielsen (1865-1931), New Patron, New Car THU THU Donald Macleod looks at the post-war period in Nielsen's THU life, when he found in Sweden a respect and appreciation of THU his music that he had never had in Copenhagen. THU THU When the sculptor Anne-Marie Nielsen created a monument to THU her husband, the Danish composer Carl Nielsen, she said she THU had wanted to capture "the forward movement, the sense of THU life, the fact that nothing stands still" in his work. From THU his early years in the woods and fields of Fyn during the THU aftermath of the catastrophic 1864 war, to his studies and THU triumph as a composer in Copenhagen, and years of restless THU travel and touring beyond, Donald Macleod traces the THU evolution of a composer determined to forge his own path. THU THU In the early 1920s Nielsen's patron was the industrialist CJ THU Michaelsen, who, as well as supporting him as he worked on a THU symphony, bought him a Renault motor car. The generous gift THU meant that the composer was soon tearing around the THU countryside he loved, although his skill behind the wheel THU left a lot to be desired. He also found backing in Sweden, THU where he established an exceptional rapport with the THU Gothenburg Symphony Orchestra, and he would spend most of THU his time away from Denmark. He was reconciled with his wife THU Anne-Marie in 1922, on the very day he finished the THU manuscript of his masterpiece, the Fifth Symphony.
