SUN SUN Time, immortality and pre-cognitive dreaming, complete with SUN diagrams and an exhortation for readers to keep a dream SUN diary, proved inspirational for artists and public alike. SUN Writers & poets as diverse as Priestley, Rumer Godden, SUN Auden, John Buchan, H.G. Wells, Flann O'Brien and Jorge Luis SUN Borges all found their imaginations sparked by Dunne's SUN theories. Soon audiences flocked to a succession of SUN Priestley plays with Time at their ticking heart. She was an accomplished MON pianist, a valued teacher at the Paris Conservatoire and in MON the latter part of her life, she devoted the majority of her MON time to the preparation of a groundbreaking anthology of MON keyboard music dating from the 16th to the 19th century. MON MON She was born in 1804, a year before Fanny Hensel, Felix MON Mendelssohn's older sister. However the fifty plus published MON works that make up her legacy, immediately set her apart. She was an accomplished TUE pianist, a valued teacher at the Paris Conservatoire and in TUE the latter part of her life, she devoted the majority of her TUE time to the preparation of a groundbreaking anthology of TUE keyboard music dating from the 16th to the 19th century. TUE TUE She was born in 1804, a year before Fanny Hensel, Felix TUE Mendelssohn's older sister. However the fifty plus published TUE works that make up her legacy, immediately set her apart. TUE While the majority of her contemporaries had a tendency to TUE focus on smaller forms, songs, choral works and salon pieces TUE for the piano, Farrenc's creative interests involved writing TUE music for much larger combinations of instruments, including TUE quintets, a sextet, a nonet , orchestral overtures and three TUE symphonies. TUE TUE That's not to say she never contributed to vocal music. TUE Research into Farrenc's extant legacy has established a TUE small collection of her largely unpublished vocal works does TUE exist. For the first time, especially for Composer of the TUE Week, soprano Ruby Hughes, a former Radio 3 New Generation TUE Artist and pianist Anna Tilbrook have recorded four of TUE Farrenc's songs. Overcoming many obstacles, she TUE manages to get her first symphony performed and there's a TUE chance to hear one of only two choral settings made by TUE Farrenc, recorded specially for Composer of the Week. In TUE this second series, she explores our ambiguous relationship TUE with trees. TUE TUE The hawthorn is such a common sight in the British TUE countryside that people hardly notice its presence - and yet TUE this hardy tree, when cut and laid, is in many ways TUE responsible for our very idea of the British countryside TUE because of its usefulness for hedging. When much of Britain TUE was enclosed in the eighteenth century, the new fields were TUE marked by hawthorn tree hedges, shaping the landscape into TUE the familiar patchwork of fields. In spring, the hawthorn TUE bursts into beautiful 'May' blossom, almost as if the hedge TUE has been covered in creamy custard - a phenomenon which has TUE inspired a massive range of painters and paintings. One of TUE the most famous thorn trees is at Glastonbury, and according TUE to local legend the original grew when Joseph of Arimathea TUE arrived in Britain, after the crucifixion, and his wooden TUE staff was turned by a miracle into a living thorn that TUE blossoms on Christmas day. Hawthorn contains chemicals which TUE are sedative, diuretic and anti-spasmodic - so it is an TUE excellent natural regulator of arterial blood pressure, and TUE is also proffered by herbalists as a treatment for heart TUE diseases and as a heart stimulant. Despite this, hawthorn TUE throughout history has been seen as unlucky, with tales of TUE woe being brought upon those who brought the blossoms into TUE the house or displayed them. Add all this to it being TUE frequently misrepresented as the crucifixion crown of thorns TUE and one can see why this tree is such a divisive force. There are in the region of 7,500 cultivars of WED the Apple, and the apple seems to go back to the very WED beginnings of the human race - it's there in the story of WED Adam and Eve, as well as being important in Ancient Greek WED and Old Norse mythology. But the apple-tree that features in WED so many Renaissance paintings of the Garden of Eden is WED actually a descendant of the wild apple - or crab apple WED which is the only truly British apple. THU THU Louise Farrenc may not be a household name in the THU twenty-first century, but in her own lifetime she enjoyed a THU career of international standing. Her music was played THU across Europe; she was twice recognised by the French THU Institute for her outstanding contribution to chamber music; THU she was an accomplished pianist who received favourable THU reviews for her public performances, for thirty years she THU was a valued teacher at the Paris Conservatoire and in the THU latter part of her life, she devoted the majority of her THU time to the preparation of a groundbreaking anthology of THU keyboard music dating from the 16th to the 19th century. THU THU She was born in 1804, a year before Fanny Hensel, Felix THU Mendelssohn's older sister. While the majority of her THU contemporaries had a tendency to focus on smaller forms, THU songs, choral works and salon pieces for the piano, THU Farrenc's creative interests involved writing music for much THU larger combinations of instruments, including quintets, a THU sextet, a nonet , orchestral overtures and three symphonies. THU THU That's not to say she never contributed to vocal music. THU Research into Farrenc's extant legacy has established a THU small collection of her largely unpublished vocal works does THU exist. For the first time, especially for Composer of the THU Week, soprano Ruby Hughes, a former Radio 3 New Generation THU Artist and pianist Anna Tilbrook have recorded four of THU Farrenc's songs. The BBC Singers, under conductor David Hill THU have recorded the only two choral settings known to exist. THU There's an opportunity to hear these vocal rarities spread THU across the week. THU THU In the fourth instalment of this week of programmes THU featuring the life and music of Louise Farrenc, Donald THU Macleod considers the significance of her position as a THU professor of piano at the prestigious Paris Conservatoire THU where she encountered Henri Herz, a prolific composer of THU salon music. As we hear today, in a ballad recorded THU specially for Composer of the Week, Farrenc could also turn THU her hand to the domestic market. Another chance to THU hear a conversation recorded earlier this year before Peggy THU Seeger joins the line up of guests performing at Sage THU Gateshead over Radio 3's Free Thinking Festival this THU weekend. THU THU Peggy Seeger's voice and career are emblematic of a life THU lived against the establishment grain. Born in New York in THU 1935 she first made her name as one of the leaders of the THU British Folk Revival, and with her partner Ewan MacColl, she THU helped to create one of the most innovative radio series of THU the last fifty years, the Radio Ballads, which blended THU original music, sound effects, and first-person interviews. THU In the 1950s she had her US passport withdrawn following a THU visit to China and chose to stay in Europe. It wasn't wholly THU unexpected. She had long aligned herself with the radical THU left and was an outspoken champion of feminism - one of her THU most famous songs being "I'm Gonna Be an Engineer". When THU official US attitudes softened after the fall of the Soviet THU Union in 1994 she returned to live in the States, but THU recently moved back to the United Kingdom and is still THU recording and releasing albums, including her latest CD THU Everything Changes. THU THU Poplar's not much good as wood these days - it's mainly used THU for matches, but it was used for shields and all sorts for THU centuries. However, it is the most modern and high tech of THU all trees, being the first tree to have had its complete DNA THU sequenced, revealing many surprises and secrets. There are THU many literary references which is surprising if, as many do, THU one thinks of the poplar as a tall column like tree, but THU there are lots of varieties, including those feared in THU former days because of being the tree from which the Cross THU was made, and the spreading branches of the abundant THU American poplar made it the tree of choice for lynch mobs THU throughout the southern States, as referred to in Strange THU Fruit, Billie Holiday's song describing the scene after a THU lynching. THU THU This second series written and presented by experienced THU essayist, Fiona Stafford, Professor of Literature at THU Somerville College Oxford, explores the symbolism, THU importance, topicality and surprises of five more trees THU common in the UK. Sung by Elizabeth Watts, FRI it forms the finale of this concert which combines Mozart FRI favourites with twentieth-century classics. FRI FRI 22:00 The Free Thinking Lecture b06nbghv (Listen) FRI This year's Free Thinking Lecture is given by the American FRI poet Claudia Rankine. Her book 'Citizen: An American Lyric' FRI is a New York Times best seller and has become an instant FRI classic. At one of the most volatile moments in American FRI race history, her meditations on the language used to FRI describe tennis star Serena Williams and on events such as FRI the Ferguson riots and the shooting of the teenager Trayvon FRI Martin in Florida provide the vehicle for an incisive FRI interrogation of justice and injustice, exposing the myth of FRI a 'post-racial' 21st century. FRI FRI A professor of English at the University of Southern FRI California and a Chancellor of the Academy of American FRI Poets, Claudia Rankine grew up first in Kingston Jamaica and FRI then New York City and has also lived in England. 'Citizen' FRI has been called 'the book of a generation' and one which FRI 'throws a Molotov cocktail' at the idea that the struggle FRI against racial injustice has been won. FRI FRI The winner of this year's Forward Prize for Poetry, the PEN FRI Open Book Award and the National Book Critics Circle Award FRI comes to Sage Gateshead to talk to Free Thinking presenter FRI Matthew Sweet about the power of language and what it means FRI to be black in the new millennium.
