SAT SAT Rule breakers in Classical Music SAT SAT How do composers challenge received ideas in classical SAT music? SAT SAT Tom Service hosts a debate with some of the leading SAT musicians of today: the composer Kevin Volans, the composer SAT and hurdy-gurdy performer Stevie Wishart, the Bach scholar SAT and director of the Dunedin Consort, John Butt, and the SAT musicologist Nicholas Baragwanath. They discuss composers as SAT rule-breakers, past and present. SAT SAT Some of the best-loved classical music today would have been SAT shocking and innovative to the first audiences. Are these SAT works memorable precisely because they challenged SAT conventions of the time? In exploring the historical SAT rule-breakers, and recognising that perceptions change over SAT time, should that inform critical and public opinion of new SAT work today? SAT SAT Tom and guests debate whether composers need to have a SAT thorough knowledge of the historical rules in order to break SAT them, how much composers consciously seek to develop new SAT ideas and go beyond the established rules, and consider SAT whether rule-breaking is allied to innovation in the arts. SAT SAT 21:30 Between the Ears b06nr54x (Listen) SAT Alice at Crackpot Hall SAT SAT Newcastle writer David Almond investigates the story of a SAT wild child who was said to roam the Yorkshire Dales near SAT Crackpot Hall in the 1930s - and makes a surprising SAT discovery. SAT SAT Crackpot Hall is an ancient, ruined farmhouse near the SAT village of Keld, which lies on the crossroads of the Pennine SAT Way and the Coast to Coast Path in Swaledale. In its time, SAT it has been a hunting lodge, an office for the local SAT lead-mining industry and a family farm. SAT SAT The acclaimed children's writer David Almond has long been SAT intrigued by Crackpot Hall, and for decades has travelled SAT west from his home near Newcastle to visit it. Recently, his SAT curiosity was rekindled when he read about Alice, a SAT four-year old child who was said to have been discovered SAT roaming wild near Crackpot in the 1930s. SAT SAT Led by the fabled laughter of Alice, David set out to find SAT the wild child again and hear her story. Prepared to engage SAT his imagination as a writer if facts alone failed, David was SAT amazed by what Crackpot could still reveal. SAT Spoiler Alert: Alice was 4 years old when Ella Pontefract SAT and Marie Hartley, the author and illustrator of a 1930s SAT guide-book to Swaledale declared they had found her - "with SAT a mocking, chuckling laugh" as she roamed alone with her dog SAT and cats near Crackpot. Like many others, David believed SAT Alice to be a figment of the two women's imagination, so he SAT set out to make a programme about how places create stories. SAT He found Alice, now 88, living in a village near Carlisle, SAT and as full of laughter as ever. SAT SAT With music arranged by the Leeds-based composer Emily Levy. SAT SAT Producer: Beaty Rubens. SUN SUN 12:00 Private Passions b06nr9p5 (Listen) SUN Free Thinking: Sugata Mitra SUN SUN As part of Radio 3's Free Thinking weekend, Michael Berkeley SUN talks to Sugata Mitra, who has started a revolution in SUN education. He believes schools as we know them are obsolete; SUN that exams shut down the brain; that children learn best SUN when left alone, with computers, and that the best teachers SUN are not education professionals, but grannies, who simply SUN say 'Wow! That's amazing! How did you do that?' SUN Sugata Mitra is the Professor of Educational Technology at SUN Newcastle University. In 2013 he was awarded the million SUN dollar TED Prize to help build a School in the Cloud, a SUN creative online space where children from all over the world SUN can gather to answer 'big questions'. Though Sugata Mitra SUN now lives in Gateshead, he was brought up in Delhi, and his SUN work with children in the slums there was the inspiration SUN for the Oscar-winning film Slumdog Millionaire. SUN In Private Passions, he tells Michael Berkeley about the SUN ground-breaking experiment in Delhi which has become famous SUN as the 'hole in the wall' - he fixed a computer into the SUN wall of a slum, and watched what happened. Within months, SUN children who had never seen a computer before were browsing, SUN painting, and downloading electronic keyboards and drums to SUN make music. Teachers, he discovered, were obsolete. This was SUN a particular personal challenge, as he was a teacher himself SUN at the time! MON MON Chabrier must surely be one of the most likeable fellows to MON have graced this earth. It seems no-one had a bad word to MON say about him. His wide circle of friends included all the MON leading musicians, writers, poets and painters of the day. MON Chabrier owned a remarkable collection of impressionist MON paintings including several by Manet, who produced the best MON known portrait of the composer. MON MON Emmanuel Chabrier's life slots into a fascinating point in MON French musical history. When he was born in 1841, Berlioz MON was already thirty-eight and famous, Saint-Saëns was six, MON while the rising stars of the future, Massenet and Fauré, MON were not yet born. Despite Wagner's dominance, and indeed MON Chabrier's own reverence for the German composer, Chabrier's MON music retains a staunchly Gallic individuality, with critics MON subsequently paying tribute to him as a "direct forerunner MON of the modern school." The reason for this may well relate, MON at least in part, to his studies. Chabrier was largely MON self-taught, and although he was better educated than most MON musical amateurs, he never followed the accepted route into MON the Paris Conservatoire or a similar institute. He trained MON first in law, only taking up full time composition in his MON thirties. MON MON In the first of the series, Donald Macleod traces Chabrier's MON roots from a childhood spent in provincial Auvergne to the MON salons of Paris, where his engaging personality charmed all MON the leading artists of the day, eventually leading to MON success with a sparkling confection for stage, l'Étoile. Every day at 10am Philip TUE shares a selection of his favourite classical music by TUE composers ranging from Mozart to Sondheim, and tells some of TUE the stories behind his creations, including a visit to TUE Elizabeth Taylor's hotel room, designing a hat for Danielle TUE de Niese's trip to Ascot and working on the Harry Potter TUE films. TUE TUE 12:00 Composer of the Week b04vdswg (Listen) TUE Emmanuel Chabrier (1841-1894), The Civil Servant TUE TUE Emmanuel Chabrier's 'road to Damascus' encounter with Wagner TUE inspires him to write a grand opera, Gwendoline. TUE TUE Chabrier must surely be one of the most likeable fellows to TUE have graced this earth. It seems no-one had a bad word to TUE say about him. His wide circle of friends included all the TUE leading musicians, writers, poets and painters of the day. TUE Chabrier owned a remarkable collection of impressionist TUE paintings including several by Manet, who produced the best TUE known portrait of the composer. TUE TUE Emmanuel Chabrier's life slots into a fascinating point in TUE French musical history. When he was born in 1841, Berlioz TUE was already thirty-eight and famous, Saint-Saëns was six, TUE while the rising stars of the future, Massenet and Fauré, TUE were not yet born. Despite Wagner's dominance, and indeed TUE Chabrier's own reverence for the German composer, Chabrier's TUE music retains a staunchly Gallic individuality, with critics TUE subsequently paying tribute to him as a "direct forerunner TUE of the modern school." The reason for this may well relate, TUE at least in part, to his studies. Chabrier was largely TUE self-taught, and although he was better educated than most TUE musical amateurs, he never followed the accepted route into TUE the Paris Conservatoire or a similar institute. He trained TUE first in law, only taking up full time composition in his TUE thirties. TUE TUE Today Donald Macleod follows Chabrier to Germany, where TUE hearing Wagner's Tristan und Isolde creates a profound TUE impression. He finally decides to abandon his career as a TUE civil servant in favour of becoming a full-time composer. TUE For the next six years Chabrier toils over creating his own TUE grand opera, Gwendoline. THU THU 12:00 Composer of the Week b04vdswn (Listen) THU Emmanuel Chabrier (1841-1894), A Bouillabaisse THU THU The demise of Chabrier's brilliant comic opera, Le roi THU malgré lui, on the Paris stage sees the composer's THU reputation spread in Germany. THU THU Chabrier must surely be one of the most likeable fellows to THU have graced this earth. It seems no-one had a bad word to THU say about him. His wide circle of friends included all the THU leading musicians, writers, poets and painters of the day. THU Chabrier owned a remarkable collection of impressionist THU paintings including several by Manet, who produced the best THU known portrait of the composer. THU THU Emmanuel Chabrier's life slots into a fascinating point in THU French musical history. When he was born in 1841, Berlioz THU was already thirty-eight and famous, Saint-Saëns was six, THU while the rising stars of the future, Massenet and Fauré, THU were not yet born. Despite Wagner's dominance, and indeed THU Chabrier's own reverence for the German composer, Chabrier's THU music retains a staunchly Gallic individuality, with critics THU subsequently paying tribute to him as a "direct forerunner THU of the modern school." The reason for this may well relate, THU at least in part, to his studies. Chabrier was largely THU self-taught, and although he was better educated than most THU musical amateurs, he never followed the accepted route into THU the Paris Conservatoire or a similar institute. He trained THU first in law, only taking up full time composition in his THU thirties. THU THU Today Donald Macleod looks at Chabrier's final comic opera, THU a work in which the riches and innovation of the music THU managed to overcome the deficiencies of a confusing plot and THU weak libretto. Known for his passionate, even FRI aggressive rehearsal style, Solti went on to have a dazzling FRI life on the classical stage, earned a starry reputation in FRI the opera house and left behind a wealth of recordings, FRI including an iconic interpretation of Wagner's Ring Cycle. FRI FRI Beethoven FRI Symphony No.2 in D FRI Chicago Symphony Orchestra FRI Sir Georg Solti (conductor). FRI FRI 12:00 Composer of the Week: Emmanuel Chabrier (1841-1894) FRI b04vdswl (Listen) FRI The composer's final years were beset with illness and FRI depression but this period saw the creation of several major FRI works, including Chabrier's final opera, Briséïs - a work FRI that he intended should be the last word in modernism. When FRI Chabrier is invited to tea by the widow of his great musical FRI hero, Richard Wagner, his manners and his music are not well FRI recieved! FRI FRI Chabrier must surely be one of the most likeable fellows to FRI have graced this earth. It seems no-one had a bad word to FRI say about him. His wide circle of friends included all the FRI leading musicians, writers, poets and painters of the day. FRI Chabrier owned a remarkable collection of impressionist FRI paintings including several by Manet, who produced the best FRI known portrait of the composer. FRI FRI Emmanuel Chabrier's life slots into a fascinating point in FRI French musical history. When he was born in 1841, Berlioz FRI was already thirty-eight and famous, Saint-Saëns was six, FRI while the rising stars of the future, Massenet and Fauré, FRI were not yet born. Despite Wagner's dominance, and indeed FRI Chabrier's own reverence for the German composer, Chabrier's FRI music retains a staunchly Gallic individuality, with critics FRI subsequently paying tribute to him as a "direct forerunner FRI of the modern school." The reason for this may well relate, FRI at least in part, to his studies. Chabrier was largely FRI self-taught, and although he was better educated than most FRI musical amateurs, he never followed the accepted route into FRI the Paris Conservatoire or a similar institute. He trained FRI first in law, only taking up full time composition in his FRI thirties. But what kind of cultural identity was FRI adopted with the kilt? How far was it pervaded by a FRI fatalistic sense of the Celt who 'went forth to the war but FRI - always fell', or by the memory of the Highland Clearances? FRI FRI Peter Mackay of the University of St Andrews explores poetry FRI and first-hand accounts from the war to find out. FRI FRI The New Generation Thinkers are the winners of an annual FRI scheme run by the BBC and the Arts and Humanities Research FRI Council to find academics at the start of their careers who FRI can turn their research into fascinating broadcasts.
